About the Artist
Kamal studied classical guitar at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Dusseldorf, Germany. He continued to expand his musical horizons and learned to paly the bass guitar, performing with a variety of jazz and rock bands.

Searching for his own unquie musical style, Kamal explored the world of synthesizers and sequencers in 1984, This technology provided him, with a new experience creating complex musical arrangements that defy categorization. A quarter-century on, Weather Report's music has dated in a way that Miles Davis's best fusion efforts (including last year's newly unearthed Live at the Fillmore East) haven't. That's especially true of the albums the band made beginning with Mysterious Traveller (1974), at which point the group began looking more to technological advances to further their sound, rather drawing from than the creative brain trust of keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Shorter largely fades into the background here, as Zawinul tests out his battery of Arps and Moogs and Echoplex-equipped electric piano against a busy battery of percussionists. Still, there's a lot of good music on the album, which has been reissued as was--without any added material. "Blackthorn Rose" is a piano (and melodica) and soprano sax duet of lovesome beauty, while the phase-shifting "Nubian Sundance" generates excitement through its orchestrated effects, complex rhythmic scheme, and simulated crowd explosions. New to the ever-evolving Weather Report is bassist Alphonso Johnson, who lends a funkier and more musical touch than his sacked (and highly overrated) predecessor, Miroslav Vitous. --Lloyd Sachs

Lives up to expectations on all fronts.......2006-03-11

When this album was released in 1974, Weather Report finally received critical acclaim for really nailing it. The first three albums were praised for their experimentation but never considered masterpieces; the unifying concept was never strong enough and thus the music was a little schizophrenic. But with this album, even Downbeat acknowledged that Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul had something and knew what to do with it. They had long been hailed as two of jazz's greatest geniuses, and finally they had found a mode of expression which allowed their genius to come out. Thus the critics' expectations were fulfilled.

I came to Weather Report through classic jazz via Wayne Shorter, but the first album I bought was "Heavy Weather," which came as quite a shock at first because it was so unlike traditional jazz, at least on the surface. I actually didn't like it, but then I picked it up again after a year and really listened. Thus I was able to appreciate its brilliant use of color and the integration of so many different styles of music into a whole. I decided then to start at the beginning of Weather Report's discography and work my way back up to "Heavy Weather," since it is quite far into the sequence. The first two albums, the self titled debut and "I Sing The Body Electric" were quite different than the classic Weather Report sound, but I found them to be extremely interesting experiments that my inner post-bop snob was able to appreciate. But I was disappointed in "Sweetnighter," the third album, which integrated more rock and funk elements and was supposed to be the album to define the Weather Report classic sound. "Sweetnighter" was a transitional album, due in large part to the old band not being able to cope with the new approach, especially acoustic bassist Miroslav Vitous. This led to his dismissal from the band in favor of electric bassist Alphonso Johnson, who really fit the new direction well. This album, the one to follow "Sweetnighter," is truly the first to define the Weather Report sound that would become famous. Thus, for me, this is the point in the lineage where the band stops being a "Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul" album and begins to be a "Weather Report" album. It was everything I expected in terms of the sound and yet still held surprises and it sounds fresh every time I listen to it. Thus my expectations were also met after worrying through the first three albums.

Many people come to earlier Weather Report in search of something that sounds like "Heavy Weather" or at least in that vein. They are often disappointed by the rough, experimental early albums, but this one is the first fully realized album. So for those who have come in through the most famous album in the discography, "Heavy Weather," this is the best place to go when looking at the earlier music, as the albums before this may be something of a turnoff (though I enjoy them).

As for the music, the aforementioned unifying concept or theme is probably stronger here than on any other Weather Report album. The album cover, a shooting star, is the first indicator of the cosmic sounds contained within. "Nubian Sundance" is an energetic yet enigmatic tune whose synthesizers make it sound like it's from another planet, yet it's grounded enough to be accessible. "Cucumber Slumber" and the title track are funky, though not as overtly as, say, Herbie Hancock. Instead, they achieve their funk through quirky rhythmic figures and sonic textures, and thus are very creative and interesting in addition to being funky. "Scarlet Woman" and "Jungle Book" are more atmospheric, with sound effects used in provocative ways supplementing simple but strong melodies. The highlight of this album for me, though, is "Blackthorn Rose," a duet between Shorter on soprano saxophone and Zawinul on synthesizers but mainly acoustic piano. In all ways, melodically, harmonically, and rhythmically, this piece is just so beautiful in unexpected and untried ways. The only detraction for me is the use of synthesizer colors interjected among the more sparse piano punctuations. They are interesting, but to hear them through the filter of today's "ambient" music makes the sounds a little dated, even if they weren't when this was recorded. Not Weather Report's fault. The only complaints I have about the program come from "American Tango," a quirky but fairly uninteresting sketch by Miroslav Vitous, who appears as a holdover on this one tune. Also, the drumming here is weaker than on other albums; the two drummers seem along for the ride instead of in the rhythmic driver's seat.

All in all, this album is fairly accessible and wouldn't be overtly offensive to any listener. Fans of classic Weather Report really come on board here and so if you liked "Black Market" and "Heavy Weather," this is the album that started that sound and is every bit as good as those two. This is not, however, a great bridge from rock to jazz, as it is more atmospheric and less funky.

2nd best.......2006-01-24

I liked this album back in the day, and I still like it now. Although it points the way toward the Zawinul-dominated band Weather Report would become, at least Zawinul still had interesting ideas at this point. Mysterious Traveler is their break away from their Miles Davis-influenced sound, and it would eventually yield mixed results. Here, though, it all sounds pretty fresh. Sure, there are lots of synthesizers and electronics, and if that bothers you, stay away. I tend to like it. Their previous album, Sweetnighter, was their best, but I like this one almost as much.

THE BEST WEATHER REPORT ALBUM.......2006-01-05

BACK IN THE 70'S I USED TO LISTEN TO WEATHER REPORT A LOT, THEY WERE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS. I SAW THEM PERFORM QUITE A FEW TIMES IN CONCERT. THIS IS THE ALBUM THAT TURNED ME ON TO THEM. AND IT'S STILL MY FAVORITE ONE. EVERY SONG IS A MUSICAL MASTERPIECE. AND THE ADDITION OF ALPHONSO JOHNSON ON BASS MAKES THEM EVEN BETTER. THE FIRST TIME I SAW HIM PLAY THE "STICK BASS" I WAS BLOWN AWAY. AND AIRTO MOREIRA IS ALSO GREAT. I USED TO LISTEN TO A LOT OF HIS SOLO STUFF ALSO (WITH HIS WIFE FLORA PURIM). WAYNE SHORTER DOES SOME GREAT SOLO STUFF AND JOE ZAWINUL IS FANTASTIC AS USUAL (AT THIS POINT HE WAS REALLY EXPERIMENTING WITH A LOT OF DEFFERENT KEYBOARD SOUNDS). IF I COULD ONLY HAVE ONE WEATHER REPORT ALBUM THIS WOULD BE THE ONE. I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS AND IT'S STILL ONE OF THE BEST.

Mysterious Traveller.......2005-08-16

I think it is weird how Weather Report dropped the unstructured all most free-jazz sound after I Sing the Body Electric to a cleaner world-funk jazz feel. Mysterious Traveller is a remarkable following the Sweetnighter. We open with the propelling rhythms of the two drummers and Alphonso Johnson on bass with a crowd cheering on Nubian Sundance. The song has some an African like feel with the back-up vocals and actually featuring some good scat vocals by Zawinul. I can't say much for American Tango it comforting but kind of annoying the synth really gets to my head. But Cucumber Slumber makes up for it, with a groovin bass line and mellow percussion and the usual sax solo from Shortner. Mysterious Traveller opens with a synth drone and some off piano by Shortner the sound is spookish but the song does pick up with crawlish keyboards and a little sax in it. Blackthorn Rose is a sax piano duet and a beautiful one at that but the piano comping by Zawinul can get difficult to follow. Scarlet Women has got a urgent rift with a lot of keyboard buildup in it but the song doesn't sound that full like the pervious ones. The soft Jungle Book features Zawinul playing almost every insterment like guitar,organ,vocals,percussion usual piano and he makes the song sound very professional. You might want to listen to that song again because it is different and good. A must have album for anyone.

A Visual Journey.......2005-06-30

Other reviewers have called this Weather Report's first (or second) effort to merge some fusion sensibilities into their music. I rather see it as their last, greatest effort before tipping too far into the pop/jazz/fusion idiom with the likes of Heavy Weather and Black Market. With Traveler, WR managed to add some funk/fusion sensibilities without losing their delightful quirkiness (especially when it comes to the great Wayne Shorter's unique improvised lines). With later tunes like the ubiquitous "Birdland," their jazz roots were almost (Mr.) gone, but Traveler is not only full of brilliant musical ideas (whether you call it jazz, funk, fusion or whatever), it plays as a cohesive burst of creativity even decades later, despite some dated-sounding synth sounds.

The most obvious characteristic of this recording however, and what most other reviewers fail to note, is how VISUAL this music is. Each track conjures up distinct visual images, attesting to the mystical and cerebral qualities of these seven compositions.

Nubian Sundance is a celebration. Visions of a well-populated, open-air, African plain, peppered with occasional dark visions and building to a triumphant climax.

American Tango is more of a mood than a specific vision. It begins with an air of uncertainty which is abruptly broken by a burst of joy. This is followed by, again, edges of darkness, and concludes with a hint of the happiness shouted earlier.

Cucumber Slumber - Despite brilliant bass work, this track would nowadays read as your basic bland funk groove were it not salvaged by Shorter's inimitable lines.

Mysterious Traveler is an eerie journey through darkened hallways with occasional forays past ominously-clouded skies and through anonymous crowds of hooded strangers.

Blackthorn Rose - There is a strange and unique beauty hiding in this terse musical dialog between Zawinul's piano and Shorter's sax. Unless you are already a fan of Zawinul, WR, and especially Wayne Shorter, you will find the sparseness of this track (okay, and this collection in general) to be an acquired taste. My advice? Acquire it. You won't be sorry.

Scarlet Woman - The most visual of this group of very graphic sound-images, and the eeriest of a collection tinged with strangeness, this track places you firmly into a dark alley with long shadows, a faint howling breeze, and a shadowy figure occasionally darting by menacingly.

Jungle Book takes you back to where your journey began, somewhere on the African continent, but this time, with only a few young boys leaping over bushes joyously, showing off for you on a bright Saharan afternoon. The dreamlike eeriness that pervades the entire album is still here, but the sense of joy that occasionally surfaces is also obvious through the end of the track.

No doubt other listeners see different images. The point is, the depth of this recording stimulates the intellect as well as the soul. If you are a fan of WR's later funk work, take note. As with any music that is deeper than your basic catchy melody, this music may take many listenings to appreciate. It's worth it.

In the booklet that comes with the uncomfortably titled FORECAST TOMORROW box-set, MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER is highlighted as the jewel in Weather Report's recorded history.

That's debatable, but it was certainly the band's first concept album, in which the artwork and atmosphere of the music all seemed to point in the same spacey/ethnic direction.

This SACD also demonstrates how well recorded it was. Unlike the SACD of HEAVY WEATHER, which is only in stereo, MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER is in glorious 5.1. There seems to have been something about the 1973-74 era which persuaded record companies that they needed to mix many of their more serious recordings in quadrophonic. That system failed to take off, but it left CBS in particular with a legacy of albums by the likes of the Isley Brothers and Waether Report which could be transformed into 5.1 sound without too much difficulty.

The sleeve notes to this album are informative, and helpful for anyone who was wondering which bassist played on which track. (Vitous only appeared on 'American Tango', by the way.)

This is the third time I've bought this album (once on LP, then on CD, then on remastered CD, and finally on SACD). It's hard to imagine that Sony will find another technological excuse for re-releasing this. So this SACD stands as definitively the best sonic presentation of one of Weather Report's greatest albums. (All from SWEETNIGHTER to HEAVY WEATHER are excellent.)

A reissue of a 1970's Quad mix.......2004-02-11

Another reviewer on this page praises the 5.1 SACD mixes of "Weather Report-Mysterious Traveller" & "Herbie Hancock-Headhunters",but as someone who was a quadrophonic-equiped teenager during the 1970's,I should explain that while both SACD's mixes are good,they are merely slight enhancements of the 1970's 4-channel Quadrophonic mixes.(I once owned the Herbie Hancock album on Quadrophonic 8-track cartridge and the Weather Report album on "SQ" Quadrophonic L.P.).Some low frequency content is syphoned off and routed to the subwoofer channel(a lot on the Herbie Hancock disc;a little on the Weather Report disc).Also,on the Herbie Hancock disc,some low-level summed front left/front right content is routed to the center channel,while the center channel is silent on the Weather Report disc.I wonder whether it was budgetary considerations that caused Sony Music to opt against a true 5.1 channel remix from the 2 inch/16-track session tapes.As for the music,both album are landmark jazz-rock fusion classics...but then again you already know that.

CAPTIVATING.......2003-12-12

This CD is a classic of "early fusion" (as opposed to "Jazz Lite"). Founders Zawinul (keys) and Shorter (horns) try new electronic and acoustic sounds, always w the trademark multi-percussionists, and electric bass for the first time. Veering into newer, almost free-form areas, the SACD 5.1 surround mix is outstanding.
This disc is demo-material for the relatively new hi-resolution SACD medium - along the lines of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters, another great experimental fusion album that utilizes SACD 5.1 to its maximum effect. Both discs surround you with the band members, w Zawinul and Shorter always anchored in the front soundstage on the Weather Report disc. Some surround discs may sound unnatural, or "forced", to purists, but the nature of the music here lends itself well to "experimental" soundstaging. The mix is crisp, without a hint of hiss or any other unwelcome, extraneous audio corruption...never betraying the 30 year old recording - it sounds as though it could have been done (very well) yesterday.
Highly recommended. Truly captivating music, sound, and mix.

More funky disco beats, but where's the jazz???.......2003-12-15

Wow this one makes thoer other cd's in comparsion actually seem more like jazz, this is thier worst set yet!!! Yucky, this isn't for those who like jazz, if you are heavily into disco or munk, than you will love this, however there are not enough jazz solos here to comphensate for all the discocrap! Sorry, I can appreciate Miles Davis B*tches Brew and even Herbie Hancock's Headhunters(to a degree), but this is more disco then jazz! Don't believe every 5 star review you read, or you'll get taken like me. This is NOT jazz, at least tot 200%, there's maybe 15% jazz here, and what there is of it, is very nice, but htere isn't enough here.

What made Weather Report really special was that the quality of their composing was in a class of its own. Jazz musicians (as a general category) tend to play predominantly hot licks when improvising (which can be a good thing). However, jazz mucians have the tendency to incorporate that very same technique into their compositions which, in my opinion, is not the best way to go about it. It's the blending of sophisticated harmonies with outstanding (but not neccesarily highly technical) playing that makes really makes a musical "piece" worthwhile. There isn't a weak composition on this album and the playing is right up there with it.

Beyond those strengths there is so much else to recommend. I can't recall such a variety of cultures/styles being utilized as this one does. There are two pieces on the CD (Nubian Sundance and Mysterious Traveler) that have two drummers with an auxillary percussionist playing at the same time-its incredible how well they integrate together. Blackthorn Rose is simply the finest instrumental solo with piano accompanyment ever done. There are even interesting sound effects at the beginning and end of most pieces that set the theme really well. I could go on with the excellence in the playing but you know that's there already.

True, some of the sounds on this album sound a little dated now (completely transcended in Tale Spinnin', their next album-the first they did out in LA) and the last two pieces have very little jazz improvisation (Wayne's playing was always a little under utilized in the band). But the CD's strengths are so stupendous it tips the scales to a five-star rating. There are other Weather Report CD's that have better features in other areas but get this one first if you want compositional excellence above all else.

Mysterious Traveller-World, Funky, Beautiful, Spacey, Druggy.......2001-04-29

"Mysterious Traveller" is WR's masterpiece. An extrordinary album from beginning to end, which has everything on it that made WR tower above the other fusion bands. Interestingly enough, I don't recommend you buy this as your intro to WR's music. Anywho, Zawinul has now like 500 lbs of synths, none of which are as cheesy and downright FUNNY as they are on say.."Mr Gone."(btw-stay away from the post "night passage" albums unless you're an aspiring supermarket music musician.)Shorter is taking a lesser, but in my opinion more meaningful role by just adding to the tracks themselves to benefit them-as opposed to benefiting the listener's view of his prowess. I've loss track of all the drummers and percussionists, but I do know Vitous wrote the intro and played on "American Tango", and the rest is (brilliantly)played by Alphonso Johnson. This is one of greatest electric jazz albums. Don't miss out on this just because it doesnt have "Birdland" on it.
-Nubian Sundance-This piece is just plain awesome. I'ts 10 minutes of melodies from all corners of the earth brilliantly laced together by Zawinul. This one features a whole group of people singing in some language that isn't English.
-American Tango-This is a pretty catchy one, although the synth might make you cringe. I love Shorter's soprano cascading on this track.
-Cucumber Slumber-This is the JAM. I'd like to hear Chick Corea get funky like this. IT WOULDNT HAPPEN.(i love the guy anyway). So groovalicious, this one has unforgettable bass, a strange little melody and an ending that will make you say-:dude...that rocks."
-Mysterious Traveller-When I hear this very cool track i think of the awesome cover art(which is the same upside down...almost). Shorter wrote it, and has a beautiful conversation with himself by overdubbing. Zawinul's piano banging, and sound effects probably made Rick Wright happy.
-Blackthorn Rose-Music simply doesn't get more intimate or beautiful than this. A duet between Zawinul's piano, melodica and Shorter's soprano sax. Shorter is just unbelievable, and Zawinul keeps things interesting.
-Scarlet Woman-A very strange track, even for WR. Still very cool.
-Jungle Book-Zawinul plays every instrument known to man on this one. Very peaceful, and complex. How Zawinul knows how to play music like this is still a mystery to the world.
All in all the finest statement of WR, and a kaliescope(spelin is fun) of shades and colors that will never disapoint the open-minded.

The last great Weather Report album.......2001-04-07

Mysterious Traveller, from 1974, continues in the steps of Sweetnighter, focusing on extended groove-driven improvisation with plenty of that wonderfully layered percussion. It was pretty clear on the previous album that the jazzy rhythm section of Miroslav Vitous and Eric Gravatt wasn't quite up to these kinds of rhythms, so here they're replaced by Alphonso Johnson (bass) and Ishmael Wilburn (drums). The jewels of this album is the double-punch of Zawinul's "Cucumber Slumber" and Shorter's "Mysterious Traveller", which like "Boogie Woogie Waltz" on the previous album combine super-catchy melodies with some serious grooving. (Alphonso Johnson is amazing on these tunes.) But this album isn't just about funky jamming -- there's a beautiful piano-soprano duet ("Blackthorn Rose"), an unclassifiable piece ("Scarlet Woman"), some proto-world-beat ("Nubian Sundance"), and a brilliant Zawinul orchetration ("Jungle Book"). On the last two tunes, by the way, Shorter is almost completely absent -- Zawinul's expanding array of synthesizers is becoming the dominant sound of the group. This is the most stylistically diverse of the Weather Report albums and the last truly great one.

Zawinul's most rhythmic and most cosmic?.......2000-11-23

This was the first album where Weather Report got the packaging for the crossover rock fans absolutely right. Spacey cover art, spacey synth sounds, plenty of pounding rhythms. (The rhythms are the most innovative I've heard on any Weather Report album.)

This is also the album where keyboardsman Zawinul's domination over saxophonist Shorter begins to show. On the long opening track, the excellent 'Nubian Sundance', Zawinul contributes layer after layer of electronic keyboard. Almost contemptuously he gives Shorter room for a tiny, run-of-the-mill solo, but the sax does nothing to propel the basic song along. On 'Jungle Book', another pretty tune, Shorter has no part to play whatsoever.

But then there is the gorgeous duet, 'Blackthorn Rose', and it's clear that there is still much empathy and rapport between the two men.

There are two other concert favourites on the album: the title track and 'Scarlet Woman', which Pastorius re-interpreted outstandingly for the '8:30' live LP.

Sometimes this is my favourite Report album. (But frankly all the albums from 'Sweetnighter' to 'Heavy Weather' are excellent.)

I just cannot help but wonder how this would sound if re-mastered. So far, Sony have only released re-mastered versions of a couple of the Report's CDs. It would be a major contribution to the history of jazz-rock if those nice Sony people could be persuaded to process a few more.

Very Pleasant Music for Everyday.......2007-01-15

This CD is different from Kamal's other CD in that it is a bit more lively. It's something that can be played over and over without getting sick of it. I'm a strong believer in how music influences us. This CD influences my family in a very positive direction. I'm continually looking for music that will enhance my life and the ones around me. This CD is able to accomplish this.

I wanted to like it..........2004-01-11

I really wanted to like this, as Derrick May is one of modern music's true greats, and his tracks released under Rhythim is Rhythim are magnificent. But this album struck me as cold (and not in a good way) and meandering. It didn't grab the attention, which is something that Derrick May's music normally does - it slams you against a wall and says "you're going to listen to me". Maybe it was the other half of the partnership, but this is not even close to May's Detroit releases.

Stunning collection of System 7/May collaborations.......2002-08-16

This delightful CD is a must for any fan of System 7 and Derrick May's music. It contains a new System 7 song (E-Merge) and the un-released 'Icon' by Derrick May, solo.

The rest of the songs featured here are either originals or re-worked versions of classic System 7/Derrick May tracks.

Opener 'Altitude' is one of the first tracks ever done by Hillage/Giraudy/May. It's beautiful swirling atmospherics point to an even more fruitful future of collaborations. The 'Groovy Intent' mix of 'Mysterious Traveller' is a superb track. Starting off as a pounding techno track, it slowly evolves in a complex, yet very groove orientated track.

But for the real standout tracks on this album, you have to look at Derrick May's previously unreleased 'Icon'. It's a superb Detroit Techno soundscape, more centred on the soulful rather than the dance element. 'Prototype 1' (Electron Mix) is a stunning track. It's everything we've come to admire about System 7 and their music. I think it shows what their best at, beautiful atmospheric techno and ambient songs, rather than their drum'n'bass centred period circa the 'Golden Section' album. The song itself works itself into a collage of sounds, all held together with May's superb keyboard style and Hillage and Giraudy's groove.
