The roster of musicians on this CD reads like a who's who of modern percussion: Tito Puente, Airto Moreira, Babatunde Olatunji, and Mickey Hart are all here, along with some other excellent artists. While Mondo Beat is percussion-oriented, there's plenty of variety here: composer James Asher creatively mixes synth and acoustic instruments on "Ijeilu"; Tito Puente turns in "Ti Bon Mo,"an improvisation over a rhythmic base; the Musicians of the Nile's "Zahrafat Al Sa'ld" is a foot-tapping set of rhythms played with sensitivity and energy; Babatunde Olatunji's "Orere" is a passionate group performance of percussion and chorus. While not as comprehensive as such collections as The Big Bang: In the Beginning Was the Drum, there's something on Mondo Beat to appeal to everyone. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-21

This is a great cd to play during your backyard voodoo ceremonies. All you need is a ghetto blaster, this cd, and a live chicken... get your copy NOW!
I just listened to it, but I couldn't summon any zombies. I think it's because I used a FROZEN chicken from the supermarket that was totally bereft of blood. I'll know better NEXT time. You must buy this disc if you want to raise any dead folks or just get their toes tappin'.. my only complaint is that the cd didn't have any tracks by Shoeless Pashley (the King of the Bongo Drums) but hey, we can't have EVERYTHING, now can we?

3 out of 5 stars Not too shabby.......2003-01-11

I found this comp to be a good mix of creative rhythm from around the world. I enjoyed the combination of South Indian sounds mixed with African instruments in certain tracks, my personal favorite being The Tree of Rhythm. Some good tabla and a very pleasant, upbeat mix in general.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good mix.......2002-11-17

This album features masters of percussion from around the world, but it is rather uneven in quality. The opening cut "Ceremony of Passage" by Greg Elis/Vas is exciting, with rhythms reminiscent of Santana and Rusted Root. But the rest of the album does not hold up to this excellent opening cut. The mix of instruments, from tabla, dohl, sitar, Aftrican drums, bells, wood flute and synthesizer, is interesting, but the total effect of all the selections is not harmonious together on one CD.

There are a few good jazz selections, "Wheel of Time" by Mickey Hart and Planet Drum in particular, but the rest of the album just doesn't hang together. Unless you are an afficionado of the artists on this album, I'd probably not recommend it.

What's included:
Ceremony of Passage-- Greg Ellis/Vas
Secret Channgel-- Tabla Beat Science from "Tabla Matrix"
Downtown-- Gabrielle Roth and the Mirros from "Zone Unknown"
Iridian-- Dhol Foundation from "Big Drums Small World"

Wheel of Time-- Mickey Hart & Planet Drum from "Supralingua"
Batuka do Indio--Airto Moreira (never released before)
The Tree of Rhythm--Taufiq
Kenny Clarke Charlie Eatts Jim Keltner Project
Journey to JungleMoon Brent Lewis
Kuromo -- Kisuru Adepoju and Afrika Heartbeat
Duden (Spooky Remix) Natacha Atlas
