jekyll or hyde? metal or electronics?.......2001-05-04
'Odyssey of the Mind' maybe was the logical evolution of a band which had begun in the early 80's with a techno-industrial music with similarities with 'DAF' or later Nitzerr Ebb and which from 1991 would develop a kind of metal-industrial; with every album they added more guitars but also they worked the electronic parts better. An example of this is 'The Final Option', which is for me an example of good blending of metal and electronics and their best album ever. 'Odyssey of the Mind' does have some songs which are similar to those of their previous album: 'Metalmorphosis', 'Isolation'... but the album relies more on a metal basis which I let the fans of this type of music rate it; Engler's voice is usually much too typical (does he want to rival Pantera?) and his pose is much too stereotypically heavy-metal. Most of the songs follow a very recognizable pattern: they begin very electronic and then the metal guitars enter the game and the song ends almost forgetting its electronic elements, which are usually put in a second place dominated by the guitars. There're good songs though: 'Last Flood', 'Isolation', 'Scent' or 'Metalmorphosis'; the others are much too metal for me. The real jewel in the record is 'Alive', a very beautiful ballad and one of the best DK's songs ever. Their following album would even envigourate the metal elements leaving the electronics much aside. But new album 'Dekaydence', which features singer Engler in his new side-project sounds more like an evolution from 'The Final Option' as if the two following more-metal albums would have never existed.
Clinical, precise and brilliant.......2000-01-27
The industrial pioneers released one of the albums of the year with this. Minor MTV hit Isolation isn't even the best song, as Eggshell and Metamorphosis will attest. The old industrial/thrash chesnut was taken a step further with 'the german James Hetfield' Jurgen Engler firmly at the helm, planting richly distorted riffs down over pumping industrial drum tracks. Very good, and recommended to people who like heavy music with clarity and intelligence
perfect blend metal-machine music........1999-09-15
krupps-one of the forefathers of industrial music does it once again to push the forefront of technology against the traditional grain of industrial music. I was impressed by Die Krupps varied vocal styles. Each track was distintive and well mixed. This album was my first CD from this band. Oddly enough I had never heard this band before I bought it and I wasn't let down. This was a great disc and I think it is a must have for industrial fans.

Music in the Right Era of Manipulated Sound.......2006-05-11
Roger Reynolds states 'I believe in as wide a range of musical involvements as is feasible given the reality of life.' Hearing his works requires a lot of preparation on the part of the audience: walking into the pieces cold might otherwise cause such mental confusion, trying to make the whole seem worth its parts, that it is easy to become aurally lost. His musical compositions or amalgams often include text and electronic elements (some critics praise him as an innovator in the use of multi-channel spatial explorations). Born in 1934 in Detroit, MI he is an important American composer whose roots seem to be found in the works of Ives, Varese, and Cage
The problem with Reynolds' works, finely composed though they be, is that they often include texts that really must be comfortably well known to the listener in order to hear the music. And he is in need of editing his longer works to remain within the concentration pattern of even the most sophisticated classical music lover. Point of reference is the first CD of this 2 CD set, an entire CD is devoted to 'Odyssey, an opera in the mind, for soloists, ensemble & computer processed sound' in which the complex texts are both sung and spoken in real time as well as with prerecorded excerpts. The work is performed by the always superb InterContemporain Ensemble with soloists Marie Kobayashi and Philip Larson conducted by David Robertson.
At a recent LA Philharmonic concert Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted the World Premiere of 'Illusion', a work commissioned by the orchestra and one meant to explore all of the sound possibilities of this acoustic wonder of a Hall. The piece begins with sounds on speakers in the foyer and steps of the hall and when the audience is seated prerecorded tapes of speakers bounce around the hall giving the text about Agamemnon, Iphigenia and Cassandra and the Greek history of Troy. Then the small ensemble on stage included Agamemnon with three voices (speaker, baritone and cellist!), along with female speaker and clarinet as Iphigenia, and soprano and piccolo as Cassandra! It is an hour-long quasi-opera and mixes acoustical manipulations of spoken word and computer sounds with the whole piece. Complex, mind-boggling, and in desperate need of editing!
The remaining pieces on this recording fit comfortably onto the second CD and are brief and well conceived: 'Summer Island, for oboe & computer generated sound', 'Archipelago, for 32 instruments & computer generated sound', 'Autumn Island for marimba', and 'Fantasy for pianist', each with David Robertson conducting the soloists and the InterContemporain Ensemble.
Stating that Roger Reynolds' music requires work on the part of the audience is in no way a negative statement. Too often we enter a concert or play a recording to be entertained. Reynolds demands we be participants and would that that were the case for all classical music listening, there would be no threat of the extinction of CDs! Food for the soul and the ear is food for the mind. Grady Harp, May 06
the leading edge, too far out ahead for most to see.......2002-01-21
This is invaluable documentation of the electro-acoustic works of Roger Reynolds. The product of time spent at IRCAM, Pierre Boulez' Paris institute, some of the pieces bear a strong resemblance to "Repons," the highest-profile Boulez composition using the state-of-the-art IRCAM technology. This is even less surprising since they were recorded by Boulez' Ensemble Intercontemporain! "Archipelago" was composed in 1982-3, for 32 instruments and 8 tracks of computer generated sound. On hearing a performance, John Cage said to Reynolds "[t]his should keep you busy for the rest of your life," because of its rich complexity. "Summer Island" and "Autumn Island" are spin-offs of "Archipelago," featuring oboe and marimba respectively. "Summer Island" is stunningly beautiful, the easiest piece on the disc to appreciate on first hearing.
"Odyssey, an opera in the mind" (1989-93) is a difficult work, to say the least. I will be listening to it alongside Nono's "Prometeo" for years, I'm sure, plumbing its depths. Featuring text from a poem by Samuel Beckett, Reynolds, believe it or not, uses equations from chaos theory to organize the computer-manupulated vocals, using the lyrical pitch structures of the voices as the basis for sound reorganization. Some pieces, such as Reynolds' string quartets ("Coconino," recorded by the Arditti Quartet), I find engaging and compelling despite my patent failure to completely understand the compositions' structures. With "Odyssey" I am not as compelled, and hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I remain convinced that Roger Reynolds is one of our most under-recognized contemporary composers. I only wish that all those who think Glass or Gorecki is the epitome of the current composer could hear Reynolds' work!

Album Description
This is the digitally re-mastered version (2004) of Kerry Livgren's Original Soundtrack to the Computer Animation Epic "Odyssey into the Mind's Eye"
Album Description
1996 album by Kansas' original guitarist & the soundtrack tothe video of the same name that Sony released & shipped gold. For this fourth volume in the series, Kerry was asked to lay down tracks of what's best described as new age jazz rock. Very Pink Floydish, yet progressive & atmospheric, andat times very rockin'. 14 cuts total. A Numavox release.
Customer Reviews:
Worst of the bunch.......2004-07-10
I've been a fan of the minds eye videos since the beginning, but this one is a huge dissapointment. There's nothing on here that is very impressive, the music is bad and the DVD production is horrible. The minds eye series used to be cutting edge computer graphics, but this one seem to be amature computer graphics produced by amatures.
Odyssey into Tripe.......2004-06-14
The only two reasons you would consider viewing this are because you're a fan of the Mind's Eye series or interested in CGI in general. Take note: it doesn't live up to either standard. Don't purchase it, even used -- in fact, don't even rent it, or borrow it from a friend that may have been duped into owning it. If you are forced, or yet choose, to watch this, mute the television and play a deep ambient soundtrack instead. The only quote from the back cover which can be trusted is "Strap yourself in..." You'll have to if you intend on watching through the end.
Both the musical score and the CGI are themselves inept -- taken together, even worse.
The "camera" motion, when not stuttering behind moving objects, is too clinical, you can almost feel the programmer's commands... "turn POV left, stop. Pan up, stop. Zoom, stop." The content suffers the same fate of poor production. For instance, the first vignette, 'Oceanic Celebration,' is simply a montage of marine settings. They've taken this collection and given it a title and not much else -- sort of like the dolphin screensaver theme you can buy from an office supply store. Some of the other segments at least have a little story, and 'Out of Step' has a little lesson, but even then you're subject to the amateur editing -- quick and redundant cuts between scenes and camera angles.
The quality of the CGI itself is underwhelming, not bad, but not good either. But let's say you're willing to watch this anyways. You will still have to deal with the soundtrack. The cover quotes "Powered by a soaring original score from KERRY LIVGREN, founder and former guitarist of legendary rock group Kansas." Right there you know you're holding a winner. I suppose some of the tracks aren't horrible, but taken in context with the content, this is just a marketing concept gone awry. The rock score not only clashes with the whole idea of CGI, but it doesn't even match the animation in each piece. (Correction: there is a single minute of synchronicity, with the festive hammer in 'Out of Step' -- but its little theme is so jarring from the rest of the piece that you shake your head anyways.) That's bad enough, and then you get to the vocal tracks with 'One Dark World' and 'Aspen Moon' -- these are perhaps the only redeeming value of this odyssey, which at its worst moments will at least finally make you laugh.
Outstanding !!! I recomend this. 5 Stars.......2004-03-11
Graphics were great!! There were (I believe) 11 tracks, and each track was different in theme, which added spice to the DVD. The entire musical theme was done in a rock musical format, with several tracks (2 or 3) actually had singing in it by Kerry Livgren (who was a member of the group: Kansas). I felt that the music went extremely well with the graphics!! It was very upbeat, not radical or harsh in any way, and there was very little singing in it - just music that helps sweep you away with the beautiful graphics. If you dont like Rock, you may not like this DVD, but I still recomend giving it a try. Some tracks featured spacey worlds, one had dinosaurs, spaceships, underwater scene with a dolphin being chased by a sea monster, tropical islands, robots, and just far out computer animation! Highly recomended - I'd say that this is the best Computer Graphics DVD I've purchased (out of 6 so far).
Best of the bunch.......2002-09-13
I have most all of the CG animations. Beyond and Gate are good as well but this one has the most moving graphics with the best sounds. Very, very cool. If you like this kind of thing at all, Into The Minds Eye is a definite MUST HAVE !!!!
surprisingly great!.......2002-03-15
This album is one of the best things KERRY LIVGRIN has done, with or without KANSAS. Most of it is instrumental. The surpris-
ing thing, or one of the surprising things, is LIVGRIN's guitar
playing, which has never sounded better, especially his lead
guitar playing. This is the most hard rock oriented album that
I've heard him do. Another surprising thing is how good these
songs are. My favorite songs include the album's opening cut
"OCEANIC CELEBRATION"; a very heavy progressive rocker with
a very catchy guitar riff and some outstanding drumming and
CREDENCE LENT and UTOPIAN DREAM. What's nice is that it doesn't
sound a bit like his work with KANSAS and it sure beats anything
they've done since he left. A very enjoyable progressive hard rock album!
