This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.
Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.
Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03
This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29
Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"
Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.
I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.
My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.
Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.
Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14
I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.
"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."
The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.
Highly recommended.

It was said that if Judy Garland had lived the role would have been hers - if you could gotten her on the set every day. But there was no doubt that she would have been the perfect age for the part and that her voice even while she was struggling in the late 60's would have been anything but better than Lucy's. If only....
Bad Casting/Poor recording.......2006-11-03
The soundtrack to jerry Herman's Mame with Lucille Ball, Bea Arthur and Robert Preston is a recording for hard core Mame Fans only, and even they have to bite down hard to make it pallatable. Primarily due to the exceedingly poor soundtrack quality, this soundtrack is one of the poorest recordings I have ever heard! Lucille Ball is totally miscast as Mame, although she try's very hard. Beatrice Arthur is wonderful as on the B'way cast album w/ Angela Landsburry. Robert Preston is the one presence I actually had to have the disc for. I may copy them to another disc, so I don't have to put up with the rest of this dreadful recording, so full of noise you're looking for the noise reduction button!!!Not for the timid!

Lucille Ball, gave it her best shot and I think she Sang, and Danced wonderful. Id rather hear Lucy !!! than that LOUD british singer Angela Lansbury, she seemend to screaming most of her songs in her OBC !! Disappointing,but worth a listen.......2006-01-11
The main reason for buying this CD is to hear Jerry Herman's lovely score.It's always worth listening to,but this version is
like the movie itself-a major disappointment.There are a few
good things on the disc-the title track,Robert Preston,Beatrice
Arthur,and Jane Connell.But the rest of the cast simply can't
sing,and Fred Werner's musical direction is mediocre at best.
And the worst thing of all is Lucille Ball.Sure,she tries hard,but
let's face it-as "I Love Lucy" proved,she simply was not a musical comedy performer(and I'm a Lucy fan!)There is no doubt
that Angela Lansbury should have played Mame,but just as they
did with "My Fair Lady" and Julie Andrews,Warner Brothers didn't
consider her a big enough name for the box office.Overall,this is an acceptable soundtrack,but if you want the best "Mame"
album,get the Broadway cast recording instead.
Three stars for third-rate.......2005-12-25
This 1974 disaster all but ended Auntie Mame's career -- and Lucille Ball's. Though to get a full scope of the bad you must see the movie if you dare this soundtrack gives broad hints. If Lucy was photographed through gauze some of her vocals (like the notorious solo duet leading off "If He Walked Into My Life") sound as though she was recorded through it. Compounding the travesty the arranger Ralph Burns turned the grande dame of Beekman Place into a singing tart, with keeyute shticks that suggest less a musical triumph than a musical sitcom. Not everyone suffers and dies; Robert Preston is the apex of mellow crooning the film's one new tune, "Loving You", which starts off hauntingly then swoons to Lucy's gauze; and there is no stopping the trouper in Bea Arthur. But casting Lucy was a mistake, a mistake compounded by a tone-deaf production. My Mame is still Angela Lansbury's, and Goddard Lieberson's.
P. S. The Warner Music folks must have laughed when they turned this album into a limited-edition price gouge. There is no difference between the current CD and the LP; the timings on Rhino Handmade's site are identical to the dust jacket's. Whoever said "A fool and his money are easily parted" was thinking record collectors.

Not all happy synth tunes.......2007-01-03
This 2nd Talk Talk CD has a reputation of being shimmery 80s synth-pop, but while the genius single It's My Life, certainly could be described this way, the majority of the album is slow, moody tracks that aren't anyone's idea of party music. Even singles like Such A Shame and Dum Dum Girl are a bit on the dreary side.
Good songs, but it lacks cohesion and doesn't work as a complete listening experience. The tracks just don't gel with each other.
4.5 stars really!.......2006-10-15
Talk Talk are one of those strange anomalies in the recording industry; their music and progressive albums just got better and more in tune with who they really were as musicians. While Talk Talk's debut album "Party's Over" was very much the plastic form of so many of the New Romantic bands of the early 80's, there were slight hints of something else. "It's My Life" has many of the same sensibilites of that plastic 80's sound, but you can completely hear elements of their next album "The Colour of Spring". This became the trend for Talk Talk; to show future glimpses of where they were really heading in each album. I'm not sure I could name all that many bands that did this. Although this album only gets 4.5 stars (and not many bands can even lay claim to that) it's their next three albums "The Colour of Spring", "Spirit of Eden", and "Laughing Stock" that not only get 5 stars each, they are also some of the most absolutely unique music you'll ever hear. It's a real listening experience to start at the beginning (with "Party's Over") and work your way through all 5 albums. Wonderful stuff.
Such a Shame? Hardly........2001-02-24
No band I know transformed themselves as completely as Talk Talk. Many, such as Genesis, changed themselves from from progressive to commercial as the financial demands of alimony and palimony mounted up. But very few, save Talk Talk, went in the opposite direction, from commercial pop to seriously serious rock.
This album charts the beginning of that transformation. Curiously, it's currently only available on import, like the rest of the band's original albums except for LAUGHING STOCK, which is definitely their most obscure but possibly their masterpiece.
With such outstanding tracks as 'Such a Shame' and 'Renee', it was a crossover album that would appeal both to progressive fans who sought the next Roxy Music and to the New Romantic movement (where Talk Talk was originally positioned by their label).
It is extraordinary that Talk Talk started in precisely the same segment as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, but here's the evidence. If you like this, then you should be wonderfully overwhelmed by the two albums that followed it, COLOUR OF SPRING and SPIRIT OF EDEN.

An album's greatness has a lot to do with what space you are in when you first hear it. This disc takes me back to 1984 when my life couldn't go wrong. But, I have to say that even if life had sucked back then, this would have pulled me out. I can't say enough about how great it is. I know that all of you philosophical self appointed music critics out there go for this band's last two albums but the feel good electro pop of their first three are truly a lot of fun. Isn't that what music should be anyway? My advice would be to wait until you're having the best day ever and then buy this to celebrate with.
Great -- But what is he saying?.......2000-08-23
Talk Talk is one of my favorite bands of the 1980s, and this album makes my "Top Five" from that decade, along with Simple Minds' "New Gold Dream" and "Sparkle in the Rain"; Chris Isaak's self-titled LP, and Prefab Sprouts' "Two Wheels Good." I was hooked from the very start with "It's My Life," mesmerized by the lush production, energy and emotion of the songs. Of course, there is Mark Hollis' melancholy and introspective voice to pull you in further. Ironically, I still can't make out many of the words he sings. Liner notes would have been a help. However, if you accept his voice as just another instrument, as I did, not much is lost. It is beautiful music nevertheless. Where this band went after this recording is a disappointment. They seemed peaked for greatness, then they took a left turn in their style and lost me and many others, I'm sure. I always wondered if drugs or contracts had anything to do with it, or just lack of interest. What ever the reason, it's too bad. "Colour of Spring" was only marginally coherent and sold dismally. If you're looking for the best from this band and a solid '80s europop classic, "It's My Life" is it.

It's my life by Talk Talk is much better than the Gwynn version. I loved the video with the animals, but I do not think the song really has anything do with what you see on the video. Actually, how many songs do you actually see that the video and the song have anything in common?
Great album by a very good band.......2006-05-20
"It's my life" was a great song. Even though the refurbished Gwen Stefani version is basically the exact same song with a different singer, it is still lame. Mark Hollis has a voice that is haunting, honest, hopeless, gritty and comforting at the same time. It is too bad that he does not make himself heard nowadays. This album has 3-4 fantastic songs and the rest are pretty good as well.

not much to add to everything said, yes, it is synthy, but no doubting (pun unintended) the maturity of the songs, Renee is for anyone who has experienced unrequieted love, and Tommorow Started, the way Hollis's voice hangs onto the stretched bass note beofre the trumpet solo, it symbolises everything wonderful about Talk Talk. Get a copy of Its MY life, add Lexicon of Love by ABC and New Gold Dream by Simple Minds and take back the airwaves from the Stefanis of this world.....
One Of A Kind Voice, One Of A kind Group.......2005-05-26
Talk Talk singer Mark Hollis has the most expressively emotional voice to have emerged from the "New Wave" (or whatever pigeonhole you need..) singers. Just hearing the sorrow, the pleading in "Renee" is enough to send you off if you like emotional singers - and I do. This is a fantastic album, atmospheric and yet claustrophobic. Talk Talk were one of the rare groups that really didn't set out to be BS rock stars, and one might say they accomplished that. It is a shame that Mark's voice was destined not to be what the music programmers wanted, so you got Simon Le Bon (and tinny-voiced Gwen Steponme) instead. Hope you're happy about that - I'm not.
And I didn't add the line about "voting buttons" either. Buy this CD.
The Original Has A MESSAGE.......2004-11-30
The original Talk Talk "It's My Life" was not a smarmy love song. For those who have seen the original video, you can see it's a protest song against animals in captivity and animal cruelty. This does not come across in the re-recorded version by "whoever". The song only makes sense against the backdrop of vision of animals in the wild and then those kept in captivity. The most poignant part of the video is where the character's mouth starts to appear with bars across it, silencing him.

In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

Classic, but not the definitive..........2004-05-20
While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.
Essential.......1999-02-24
The term "essential" gets thrown about too much. And heck, the claim that certain words get thrown about too much gets thrown about too much. But here is a collection that really *is* essential to understanding the nature of a whole shift not just in classical music, but in popular music and indeed in popular culture. So many of Reich's ideas and concepts have become so deeply embedded in current classical music, film scoring (any number of examples, but think about Tangerine Dream's score for "Risky Business" and Hans Zimmer's score for "Thin Red Line," for starters), electronic music and even the visual arts.
This box set gives the listener all of Reich's major works. I can't even attempt to describe them individually, but every one of these 10 CDs is compelling. For the totally uninitiated, take out "Music for 18 Musicians" (presented here in a crystalline new recording) to get an idea of what the core of this guy is all about. From there, you might want to listen to "Different Trains," "Electric Counterpoint" and "Six Marimbas" to get an idea of the pointillistic pulse minimalism that Reich contributed to the world. The earlier material is the more challenging, exploring the subtleties of rythym, phase relationships between sounds and shifting timings. Among these, the new recording of "Four Organs" is just outstanding.
Reich's works, along with the early works of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, form the foundation of an enormous edifice that has grown of music that attempts to return to its essential and hypnotic roots. With this box set, one of those pylons becomes clear.

I use this CD during healing rituals. The only thing better would be if Marcey was there to create the music, herself.
Excellent, wonderful music........2007-03-12
This cassette has been in my collection for years. While I cannot claim the healing benefits others can, I am able to state that when things are rough it helps me relax and sleep better. Meditation while listening is greatly enhanced, and so is massage therapy.
It is one of the few tapes I own that will be immediately replaced with the CD version when it no longer plays.
No pain meds needed.......2005-06-20
When I was scheduled for gum surgery, I asked the doctor for permission to play my tape of Inward Harmony during the surgery. The doctor gave me a lot of warnings about all the pain I would experience after the novocaine wore off, and had me buy a bottle of OTC pain reliever so I would be ready.
I never had to take a single pill.
Now it's some years later and I'm experiencing some arthritis pain. It's time for me to get an Inward Harmony CD.
Meditative and relaxing.......2003-06-16
I was presented with a cassette tape of "Inward Harmony", as a gift, back in 1988. (no frills back then, this tape was in a plain purple cover that had been autographed by the artist)
After fifteen years, I still love the music. (of course the tape didn't quite last as long) The music has such a soothing, calming effect, perfect for meditation or just kicking back to release the tension from the day. Inward Harmony is so unobtrusive that it makes for perfect background music for yoga routines. It allows you to focus on self.
Peaceful and Meditative.......2003-01-18
Marcey Hamm is well-known in new age circles for her CDs built around themes. The theme here is physical and spiritual integration. Relative to her other albums, his is a more acoustic project, featuring the human voice as instrument. This is contemplative peaceful music, especially good for meditation or relaxation.
