Few artists last long in the rarefied terrain occupied by singer Lisa Gerrard over the last quarter-century. She shares a passion with composers like Arvo Pärt in the unrelenting pursuit of the divine. In fact, Gerrard evokes Pärt a few times on The Silver Tree, her first non-collaborative solo release since The Mirror Pool in 1995. The Silver Tree is an album of ancient echoes, ghostly refrains, and hymns to the heavens. On "Abwoon," she intones the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic, orchestrating her own voice in choral harmonies that unfold beneath her like winds on waves. But "Spaceweaver" sends chills through the soul as Gerrard unlocks this peculiar nasal, back-of-the-throat snarl that she only adopts on such tracks, with a menacing blues groove that recalls "Meltdown" from her score to The Insider. You can hear much of Gerrard's soundtrack work mirrored here: "The Sea Whisperer" picks up at the spirit-affirming end of "Now We Are Free" from Gladiator. And I suspect that the 10-minute opus "Towards the Tower" might be her rejected overture for the film Constantine. With Ligeti-like voices, suspended glissando strings, and ominous percussion shifts, it certainly would work in the cinematic context of a supernatural thriller. The album has been available for half a year in Australia (worldwide via digital download), so as a bonus, the American release tacks on a bonus track, "Entry." Its thudding electronic drum loop and sketchy vocal makes for a disruptive exit. But until you get there, The Silver Tree is an embracing experience. Whether singing Aramaic, English, or that language of her imagination, Lisa Gerrard makes the most heavenly music heard on earth--and maybe beyond. --John Diliberto
Album Description
The title of the album is "The Silver Tree", not Silver Tree.

Dark ambient.......2007-08-02
Ok listening, not good sleeping music because of too many tempo changes. Lisa's voice is sounding good on this album, but somewhat different than her previous work. Not bad, just different.

I think I heard it in a movie once .......2007-06-14
I think I heard it in a movie once that maybe the books we read choose us. This is the recollection I had when picking up the documentary 'The Devil and Daniel Johnston' from the local video store (no movies to select from that day) and perhaps it applies to video as well - I really didn't know what to expect. 'The Devil...' was my introduction to this unbelievably eloquent lyricist. The first 14 tracks were done in studio some time around 85 and was Daniels first professionally recorded album - these 14 tracks coupled with the next 15 that he recorded himself - listening to them made me feel like I had discovered a treasure chest of priceless feelings. In todays image and commercially driven music scene it's really difficult to think of anything that could compare with the creativity I heard on this album (CD).
It would be wrong to categorize my picks as "hot spots" because every thing on here is GREAT but I will share the ones that come to mind right now:
1 through 29.
"There is a star and a heaven" for Daniel Johnston.
Er, to clarify the other review...........2007-01-25
I got into Daniel Johnston through the documentary, "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" after it was recommended to me by a friend. If you haven't heard him before, I suggest you do the same, as it puts a lot of things into context, and it's a good way to here a lot of his music, easy and cheap. As the movie progressed, I found myself seeing a lot of Beck and Brighteyes in Johnston, which is to say there's a lot of Johnston in Beck and Brighteyes, since he came out a solid 10 years prior to either of them. His music is definitely not for everyone, as it's not at all polished. It IS, however, brutally honest and poetic. Definitely worth a listen if you like your lyrics to have a bit of substance.

He is erratic, moody, adolescent, and unsettling, just as he is strikingly brilliant, and all depictions entwine on this collection that plucks from Daniel Johnston's most memorable work throughout a quarter-century of bare-bones recording. While his helium-pitched voice can often border on acquired taste territory, Johnston, who suffers from bipolar disorder, writes both gripping melodies and cutting, cunning lyrics--often about failed love, life's ambiguity and his passion for the Beatles and comic book heroes. Any Johnston follower might choose 21 different selections to represent such a catalog, but this package--culled mostly from his '80s songbook--is both symbolic and inclusive, including a pair of chord organ grinders that are among his most familiar: the childlike "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and the wistful "Speeding Motorcycle." Johnston's raw vulnerability shines most on "Never Before Never Again," on which he howls about a former girlfriend, and the fragmented and demented "Funeral Home," where he contemplates his last car ride (to the tune of Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch"). Welcome to My World is ideal for any newcomers to Johnston's music, provided they are willing to peel away his torment and contemplate his true genius. --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
Perfect entry for the genius of Daniel.......2006-09-22
Almost every song from this compiliation is present as soundtrack to The Devil and Daniel Johnston. If you want to enter in thsi strange but beautiful world, a schizo Dylan that someday took LSD from the devilish [....] Surfers, this is the one to get. Then, if you become a fan (it happens, eheh), you should try his masterpiece - Songs of Pain 80-83.
Perfect Companion for "The Devil and Daniel Johnston".......2006-05-16
It should first be noted that the music of Daniel Johnston is not for everyone -- you will either love him or hate him, most will feel the latter. His voice sounds like a 14 year old who got into the parents' liquor cabinet, but like Bob Dylan, it's the perfect vehicle for his material. I recommend the excellent documentary currently playing in art movie theaters to learn about this unique singer songwriter's incredible life --you couldn't make up a story as sadly surreal. His music is best appreciated if you understand his history and are familiar with his artwork (his pen and ink cartoon-like drawings go for thousands of dollars). His songs, like his artwork, are replete with symbols and references to his internal mythology, a conglomeration of cartoons, comic books and fire and brimstone religion.
Welcome to My World is sort of a greatest hits of his early work, mostly recorded on cheap tape machines and often given away to people on the street. Daniel bares his soul -- listening to his music is like awkwardly being trapped with a stranger you run into, obviously a little off center, who rattles on providing too much information about his innermost feelings. But no other artist I have heard captures the angst of adolescence quite as well as Daniel, and his sense of melody, his ability to convey complex feelings with the simplest language, is brilliant. Strange, moving, disturbing stuff, an emotional car wreck that you just can't look away from. If you like the off beat and stark emotional honesty in your music, check him out.

It's been 14 years since Michael Brook did a proper solo album, Cobalt Blue, but that doesn't mean the guitarist has been absent from music. He's produced and performed on pop recordings by Julia Fordham and Jorane and made numerous albums for the Real World label, including signature releases by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Djivan Gasparyan, and Hukwe Zawose. He's also composed and performed on film scores and was part of Hans Zimmer's soundtrack posse, contributing notably to Black Hawk Down, among others. He throws all of that into his new album, RockPaperScissors, which could've been called RockPaperScissors and Whatever, as Brook slices up a career's worth of influences and drops them in one load--albeit an elegant one. Lebanese violinist Claude Chalhoub turns in a mournful duet with Brook on "Tangerine," singer Paul Buchanan shows up on the title track, and a Bulgarian choir turns up incongruously on a dreamy, '60s style guitar instrumental, "LightStar." There are King Crimson-like guitar grooves on "3 Doges," and on "Darker Room," a spoken-word sample of Richard Burton performing Dylan Thomas's "Under Milk Wood," quoting the "Starless and bible-black" line that Crimson connoisseurs will note as the title to a one of their albums. Given Brooks's extensive work as a film composer and session artist, it makes sense that much of the disc has a cinematic quality, with many tracks featuring a full orchestra. Excepting Lisa Germano's haunting turn on "Want", the other two vocal tunes drag. Rather than honing a sound, as he did with Cobalt Blue, RockPaperScissors brims with too many ideas, as if Brook thought it might be another 14 years till his next album and he had to get it all out now. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Bold, Beautiful, Haunting.......2006-10-26
So compelling is this CD that on the rare occasions when the house empties, the first thing I do is turn on RockPaperScissors. It requires closer attention; one listening and you are entranced-at least I was. Then it resonates within you. Oh, Tangerine is so sweet and haunting. The Bulgarian Orchestra, Bulgarian Classical Choir, the Cosmic Voices- wow, it adds such a large dramatic sensation. I Loved Richard Burton doing Dylan Thomas in Dark Room. Bold, Beautiful, Haunting.
Wow........2006-08-09
I heard Mr. Brook on Weekend Edition, thought he sounded like a great guy and I wanted to support him and his new album he spoke so eloquently about. RPS, as I call it now, came a couple days ago, and this might be a bit cheesy, but I believe this album to be magical. Somewhat a musician myself I am amazed at the seamlessness and gorgeousness of transitions every time I listen to any piece on this record. Brook very masterfully goes from electric guitar to an orchestra to a Bulgarian choir and it's so great that 1. I wish I had written it and 2. why doesn't everyone put a Bulgarian choir on their album!? It's just really beautiful. I can't even pick my favorite piece because honestly my answer changes every time I listen to it.
Supposedly this new album is a slight departure from previous works, if other online reviews are to be believed, and if it is, it is a departure to beauty and lushiness and exquisite detail that is so very worth listening to.
sublime razors' edge.......2006-08-01
I am a longtime and loyal fan of Michael Brook. I believe him to be a brilliantly innovative and creative musical force. I was extremely excited when I heard he was coming out with a long overdue solo release.
'Cobalt Blue' is still one of my all-time favorites and his collaborations with Nusret Fateh Ali Khan and Djivan Gasparyan are equally powerful and compelling offerings. All masterpieces.
Brook has such a unique way of structuring his compositions, and when coupled with his experimental sonic approach it's just breathtaking. So many unpredictable and engrossing sounds, but not in a self-important way. It is very mindful of the vast expressive sea in which he swims in.
Upon repeated listenings within the past few days, I have to say that that "RockPaperScissors" is very captivating and engaging. Though I also enjoyed it upon first listen, I somewhat agree with the other review below that it didn't fully sink in upon first listen. I'm glad it didn't. I usually find that the greatest work - music that penetrates deeply and lasts over time - usually has to possess this enigmatic quality. Michael Brook has captured it in spades.
I also read the critical review and see that person's point; the album at first is a bit wide in its scope. Yes, it is representative of Brooks' entire oeuvre, but in the best of ways. Even Brook describes it as a 'travelogue'. In the end, it absolutely adds up to much more than the sum of its parts, and thus, it is great art.
However, I don't believe that the particular reviewer who wrote that review allowed himself the pleasure of repeatedly listening to this sublime recording. There are many layers here, both sonically and vibrationally (if you know what I mean), which cannot possibly be absorbed in one or two surface listens. It is also important to be in the 'right' environment and headspace to openly receive this type of reverent music.
Having heard "RockPaperScissors" now seven or eight times I fully 'get it'. It truly is a masterpiece. In some ways better than other previous albums, but only time will tell.
Though I love the entire collection of songs, highlights for me are: "Strange Procession" is classic Brook, with abrupt changes in tempo and haunting guitar notes. "Doges" is a polished and primal ethno-trance sure to pull you into the jungle muse. The title track, "Rock Paper Scissors" even works for me; Buchanans' voice works perfectly with Brooks' sonic weave . "Light Star" perfectly builds into crescendos with the assistance of a surprising contrasted Bulgarian chorus. Again it totally works, very well I may add. "Silverized" is my favorite; it's just gorgeous and terribly beautiful. It reminds me a bit of Eno & Lanois' "Deep Blue Day" from "Apollo" soundtracks, which may simulataneously be the most inspiring and deeply sad song ever recorded.
I only hope we don't have to wait another 14 years for Brook to come out with another solo recording. He is far too gifted and amazing to just allow those he works with to take centerstage. Shine on Michael Brook! Thanks for all of your creative energy, it is very appreciated.
P.S. For those who may be interested, check out an interview NPR had with him on Sundays 'Weekend Edition' (July 30, 2006). Nice insight and very humbling indeed.
Really really beautiful.......2006-07-28
The first time I listened to this new album I quite liked it but wasn't blown away. A fellow Brook fan told me to give it one more listen and as I did I was fascinated by a billion details that I'd missed on the first time around. I was amazed and yes, blown away. It's a gorgeous piece of work ---- Tangerine in particular. It's all stunning, really.

It's a testament to the unstoppable drive and resonant artistry of Matt Nathanson that this new live album came to be. After releasing five albums independently from 1993 to 2002 he signed to a major label for 2003's Beneath These Fireworks. Not happy with the alliance, he extricated himself from his contract after a couple years and recorded this set live in front of fans. The venue in the title is the long-running club outside of Philadelphia and the entire house is in his hands. They delight at his anecdotes and comedic asides, sing along when prompted, and, in general, fall under the spell of one man and his acoustic guitar. Having built his fan base from extensive touring, a live performance on disc is an apt and welcome addition to his discography, both pleasing those already familiar with Nathanson, and providing a fine starting point for those just finding out. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
I'm addicted.......2007-03-13
Matt Nathanson is SUCH a good time, and the banter in between songs makes you love him that much more. He is SO funny! I have to listen to this CD entirely too much - I'm a lil' hooked on him.
Absolutely Amazing.......2007-01-16
This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Matt is absolutely amazing, i listen to this album every night while i go to sleep and it never gets boring. Matt actually graduated from my high school in '93 and i knew him when he went here before he was big. He is an awesome guy and an amazing musician. I recommend this album to EVERYONE. Not only are his songs amazing but his intros are absolutely helarious.
fantastic cd.......2006-11-04
I bought this cd because I saw him perform live at a Toad the Wet Sprocket show and was very impressed. The cd is quite similar to the live set he played but better. All the songs on the cd are great and his banter between songs is equally enjoyable. This cd goes in my top ten.
Do Not Buy This Album.......2006-10-07
Seriously, I generally can listen to most music and prefer Jamband, Acoustic, to even straight Rock and Roll, all the way to Country (Old Country that is).
Here are the facts...don't let the reviews mislead you. Every single song sounds exactly the same, not to mention his voice sucks, which he will admit if you actually buy this and read the liner notes. Also his guitar skills suck as well. The sound on the album is also horrible.
I'll admit, the only good thing about this CD is some of the conversation or interaction with the audience. My only suggestion is that he quit making music, and do standup comedy. He would probably make more money and fans.
Do not even let people fool you with reviews that say he sounds like Jack Johnson, and some other groove type music. It is not music to relax to nor chill. In fact, every song will annoy you.
If you are like me, you sometimes take the chance on certain artist. Sometimes you hit a homerun and sometimes you strike out. Let me spare your batting average some insult. Just as validation of some of my other musical taste:
Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Moe, Jack Johnson, Wide Spread Panic, Left Over Salmon, Jupiter Coyote, Moonshine Still, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray, Clapton, Jiggle the Handle, String Cheese, etc....if this is your taste, then pick another bottle!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

raw, unabashed songwriting .......2007-02-24
This album captures a summer of musicality in the life of a young, unabashed songwriter. After watching "The Devil in Daniel Johnston" I was compelled to pick up some of his music. His work is extremely raw and revealing. There is a level of intimacy seldom conveyed in recorded music. It is not something that you would or could listen to constantly but it is powerful while you do. My emotional response when listening has ranged from outright joy to subtle embarrassment. Again, you will inevitably be taken aback by the vulnerability in the music, especially on tracks like "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances" where an upbeat Daniel encourages "everyone" to join in although he is most likely alone in his sister's garage pounding out the tune on a toy organ. Not for everyone but very important to some.

A Fine Gathering.......2006-10-28
The first time I heard "Little Stranger," I was moved to tears. Peter songs communicate emotions beautifully. This record is a gem from start to finish, with captivating lyrics and melodies. It's a fine example of Peter's gifts as a solo artist.
Good....but.......2006-10-17
I agree with the previous commenter as far as this is NOT Eastmountainhigh.
The comment/review on eastmountainhigh is right on: "Kat Maslich's is a classic folk voice, warm and resonant, and Peter Adams' counter melodies are always beautiful. "
Peter's music and voice are wonderful, but it needs Kat to play against. Alone his voice is too predictable and verging on monotonous.

It's not Eastmountainsouth, and that's too bad.......2006-10-17
The general rule (with notable exceptions) is that solo albums from members of a great band are never as good as the band's unified magic. Think the Beatles. Think the Eagles. Think 10,000 Maniacs.
Peter Bradley Adams without Kat Maslich Bode is too gloomy, dark, and monotonous. The magic is gone, Pete. He can write beautiful music, but Kat Bode's voice made the songs soar, while the two together made complex harmonies that are glaringly missing from this album. Eastmountainsouth was a phenomenal group, a brilliant album, and if Peter B. Adams knows what's good for him, he'll get on a plane out of L.A. go back to Virginia, and get Bode to record these songs over with him. Not one track on this album can hold a candle to "Show Me the River," and anyone who's listened to that track (chime in here, folks) will agree. When ya comin' home, Pete Adams?
Quiet Timeless Genius.......2006-09-26
I played Eastmountainsouth until I knew it like I knew the Beatles -- OK, I'm an old guy. But in the old days, we'd listen to a few records deeply. Now we tend to listen to a million of them superficially. But Eastmountainsouth was something I just couldn't get enough of. I listened until I knew it note by note. I was sad when I heard they'd broken up and that Peter Bradley Adams was going solo - but I shouldn't have been. Right from the first listen to "Gather Up," there was that same haunted, timeless quality. This music creeps up on you; it washes over you; it's familiar from the first listen. Like the famous potato chip, I betcha can't eat one -- listen once, and you'll play it again, thinking it's good. Then you'll play it a third time, and you'll really like it. Then, at play Four, it'll be one of your favorite albums ever. Play Five -- well, write your own review.
A strong debut album from an incredible talent.......2006-09-25
My first listen to Peter was in 2004 when he was part of the duo known as Eastmountainsouth. A friend and I caught their show at a local venue and I was immediately blown away by his vocal and instrumental talents. I was happy to see that he released a solo album this year. Since purchasing the album, it has been in constant rotation in my cd changer. Each song on the album is solid, but there are stand-outs: "One Foot Down", "Chant", "Little Stranger" and "Gather Up". My favorite on the album, however, is "Upside Down". It's one of those songs that hits you in the heart. Peter has the rare ability to translate moments in his life into words and music that touches your soul. You feel the emotions not as a voyeur, but as though you've experienced those same moments and situations yourself. And in many cases, you probably have. "Gather Up" is a strong debut album from an incredible talent.

Most documentaries suffer from generic soundtracks or the most rudimentary of scores, often cut by the director's friend. But then most of them don't have Michael Brook as composer. The guitarist is best known for his world fusion work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and other Real World artists and his own ambient fusion releases like RockPaperScissors and Hybrid. It's the latter side that's tapped for Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, his dire documentation of Earth's warming and the government's inability to tackle the problem. Those themes dominate the film, but Gore's treatise is surrounded by personal reflections and autobiographical side trips. It's in these segments that most of Brook's music is used. He manages to be pastoral, reflecting Gore's Tennessee farm roots; and atmospheric, underscoring Gore's emotional personal journey. Plaintive guitars ("Katrina"), processed guitar washes ("Main Title--River View"), touches of ambient Americana ("How Could I Spend My Time?"), and even a bit of U2's quietly anthemic pulse ("Science") emerge. Some of the best tracks, like "Best Unsaid" and "Carte Noir," weren't even used in the film. This score works as individual songs, but even better as an album-length dip into a melodic, rustic ambience, a drift down an American river, where shadows lie around the bend and dark shoals are just beneath the surface. --John Diliberto

News Has To Spread!.......2007-08-03
This soundtrack is so incredibly beautiful, word hopefully will spread about it as time goes on. The movie is such a marquee event, that many people do not know about this amazing piece of work. Please, do yourself a favor, get a copy of this thing. I come home often after a busy day and this cd just sets a wonderful mood. Thanks Michael Brook.
Among the best soundtracks in 2006.......2006-11-25
After four years without a musical recording, Michel Brook came back in 2006 with no less than the musical backdrop to the fantastic documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". In the same vein as Mark Isham's latest work ("Crash"), the Toronto-born musical genius provides the perfect companion to this dramatic movie that presents us with a crude reality that we feel compelled to do something about.
Non-invasive in any way and mildly ethnic in certain respects, Brook's guitar/keyboard-based ambient music constitutes a fundamental part of the medium that Gore uses to present his powerful message. After the movie, the images he leaves you with resonate in your mind when you listen to the notes of Brook's work: a truly magical combination.

HIGH WIRE LIVE.......2007-01-11
WILLIE PORTER AT HIS BEST, IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE. A SUPERB GUITAR PLAYER AND SINGER.
Sneakin' Up on Everybody.......2006-01-18
I had gone to the theater to hear Eric Johnson. But first, there was some guy on stage named Willy Porter. "Never heard of him," I thought. And then I heard him perform "Breathe."
Now I own Mr. Porter's complete catalog. And, in a couple of weeks, I'll be privileged to hear him again.
A year ago Willy snuck up on me. Now he's sneakin' up on everybody.
Superb.......2005-07-30
This is simply a superb CD. Willy has it all, great voice, great talent on the guitar, great sound and mastery of the technology to achive great sound. Great tune writing. Great feeling. I saw him play last fall on the joint tour he did with Martin Barre. The two of them joined forces to support each others solo album efforts- AND they were supported by Doanne Perry, Andy Giddings and Johnathan Nooyce of Jethro Tull. I saw the show in a cosy comfortable small venue here in Madison Wi. I was floored. The musicianship and chemistry that eminated from that stage was huge. This CD only has one cut that has any other players "You Stay Here" in which Martin Barre compliments Willy with own huge talent. I love this Cd so much I have played it for all my friends and every one of them loved it regardless of their musical tastes. It trancends it all. Just superb. Now all I wish for is for a live CD to be released of the 2004 Willy Porter / Martin Barre tour. That would be a great follow up to this most excellent CD. Just buy it.
Porter live, in top notch form! .......2005-03-18
Recorded in England and America between December 2001 and June 2003, every track on "High Wire Live" is an intimate selection between man, guitar, and audience. Willy Porter carries on a tradition that reminds one of the late Dave "Snaker" Ray in a contemporary rock format. His rhythm guitar uses accelerating minor chords and string-slapping punctuation while he sings the observant melodies. Influences of Indian ragas can be heard selectively in his rhythm work, carrying on E-string drones between chorus breaks. Guitarist Martin Barre of Jethro Tull fame guests in as the only other musician on the record, providing an interesting counterpoint response on both acoustic and electric guitars. Porter is finally gaining some much-deserved respect as a solo musician, carrying his audiences with his unique blend of classical, jazz and rock influences. A Brand New Fan Who Is Blown Away By Willy!.......2005-01-22
Well, I just saw Willy Porter open for Eric Johnson last night in Anaheim. I saw a guy get up onstage with an acoustic guitar, and since I didn't want to lose my spot near the stage, I figured I'd stay and watch. I don't usually watch the opening act. All I can say is THANK GOD I STAYED!! Willy Porter blew us all away with some of the most Phenominal Musicianship anyone there had ever seen. It's like the guy is Genetically Programmed to do what he does. Music just comes pouring out of the guy. And, he just may be the greatest acoustic guitar player you have ever seen. On top of that, he's very funny and a nice guy, too. I have no idea how I would catagorize his music, except to say that it is of Extremely High Caliber, and Extremely Inventive. I've run out of words, and I only just heard of Willy Porter yesterday. I haven't bought the CDs yet, but I'm going to when I finish writing this. I suggest you do the same, because Willy Porter is Phenominal.
