Audion
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This reissue of pioneering electronic artist Synergy, one of many coming from PolyGram Chronicles, is an interesting and entertaining mix. Audion opens with "Orbit Five," layering melodic runs and chords over percussion for a very progressive-rock result. "Terminal Hotel," a slow, heavily rhythmic piece with an atmospheric opening, is full of the cinematic drama that Synergy is famous for. There are several orchestral-sounding pieces as well, making one wonder what would happen if, for instance, the London Symphony took on the anthemic "After the Earthquake," the classically structured "Falcons and Eagles," or "Flight of the Looking Glass," which mixes classical and pop sensibilities. Knowing that Audion was originally recorded before the age of digital synthesis makes the results all the more impressive. --Genevieve Williams

Album Description
While Matthew Dear explores the poppier realms of electronic music under his birth name, his newest project, AUDION, takes a much harsher approach to techno with the release of SUCKFISH, bringing untamed synths and raucous beats into a devastating mélange. In the same vein as Alter Ego and Ellen Allien (his fall tourmate), and with a hint of funk ala Timbaland, SUCKFISH opens a new chapter for Detroit and takes the rest of the world with it. The CD version contains the international hits "Kisses," "The Pong," and "Just F--king," which were played and charted heavily by DJs such as Sven Vath, Michael Mayer, Trevor Jackson, and Hell. Whether assaulting your headphones or devastating the dancefloor, SUCKFISH forges an indelible new path for heavy machine music.

Wonderful Stuff!.......2006-06-21
A few years ago, I purchased "Leave Luck to Heaven" by Matthew Dear on the basis of a Rolling Stone review. It took a while to get used to Dear's very unorthodox music but I gradually learned to love the CD and I followed up by ordering "Backstroke," his follow-up CD. I enjoyed it too, but not quite as much as "Heaven." Recently, I wondered if this unusual and creative fellow had any new discs out. I put his name into the Amazon.com search, and I found Audion and the "Suckfish" CD. Matthew Dear in disguise, I guess. Anyway, it was certainly worth a listen and I purchased the disc.
Audion takes a while to get used to, and not everyone is going to like it. A friend, in fact, wonders how I could possibly listen to this type of unmitigated noise. She regards it as a musical jackhammer, with an emphasis on the hammer. Well, that's OK. I like it and like it a lot, but I had to learn to like it. Matthew Dear's earlier efforts had a light, playful, frolicking character. The Audion disc is heavier, darker, more intrusive and much more complex. The sonic range on this disc is quite remarkable. The lower sounds test my stereo system and the upper range tests my ears. Both come out fairly well, but I'd sure love to listen to this thing on a real good high-end stereo system at high volume. It would be awesome! One gripe I have is that Dear uses a lot of distortion, including voice distortions, and I prefer the cleaner, crisper sounds. OK, I can live with it. One blessing, is a general lack of vocals, quite unlike the other Matthew Dear discs.
The Audion CD has a Matthew Dear signature sound and method of composition. The music is quite different than that of Dear's earlier discs, but it is Mathew Dear music, without question. The first three tracks ("Vegetables," "Your Place of Mine," "T*tty F*ck") can only be described as brain numbing. Well, that's OK. It's like going to the dentist. One has to be "numbed up" before the serious work begins. And then follows such delights as "T. B." (featuring ultra-high sounds), "Wield," "Taut," "Rubber" and "Just F*ucking" (Where does Dear come up with such titles?). To me, the highlight of the album is "The Pong," a delightfully playful mélange of notes and rhythms. Wonderful stuff!
So what might I recommend? Well, this CD is not for the faint of heart. If you like complex electronica music, as I do, then you might find this CD a delight. But, don't give up easily. Give it a few listens and let it gradually settle in. It's worth the effort.
Deeezamn!.......2006-02-10
Loud and dirty with some damn good rhythm. Thats all you need to know. A vital record in the crates of all techno/house djs.
Matthew Dear takes us to the grimiest corner of the minimal house room........2006-02-08
Audion is Matthew Dear gone terribly awry. Instead of thoughtful intelligent nuanced house, Dear gives us Suckfish, the nastiest, grimiest techno one can imagine. The techno is viscerally sexual and violently primal, like a person's id expressed through dance music. There's no pretense or fence siting at all about what you should do when listening to Audion: dance or get the hell off the floor. You will either love this LP or hate it. The sounds of this record are simple and polarized in the extreme, but in ways that few artists dare to explore. The bass and beats are harder, faster, and lower than most artists would try for while the clicks, bleeps, and synths are all so high pitched they reach ranges that only effect dogs. All this might appear to sound negative, but somehow Dear in his Audion mask has found a way to make it work. It's like when people started saying "bad" to mean that something was really "good". The sounds of Suckfish are perversions and inversions on the norms of minimal techno without being so alien that they no longer signify or typify the genre. In that sense, "Suckfish" is extremely bad.
It just doesn't get much better.......2006-02-04
this cd is excellent. matthew dear has been released quality techno for a few years now, but as it stands, this is his best work for me. from start to finish the unique audion sound sucks you in and its easy to get addicted. opening track vegetables starts off nicely and goes into "your place or mine" from the pong ep, and also featured on ivan smagghe's fabric mix cd. highlights on this cd for me were "T.B." and "kisses" although the whole cd is great. if you have heard matthew dears other productions, dont expect this to be the same, but expect it to be just as good 8)
the future of detroit techno, indeed.........2005-10-07
matthew dear's audion guise gives us nasty, massive techno that scorches a path through the wires..i heard 'the pong' at a club last year and was hooked immediately..i promise youve never heard anything quite like this.
definitely recommended for fans of alter ego, t raumschmiere and the like, and worth it for 'kisses' and 'the pong' alone.

Very Good Minimal. A unique mix.......2006-12-14
I am a fan of unique stuff. Anything that crosses boundaries and is different, and good, is what I enjoy most. A lot of the feelings and sounds in many of the tracks on here are quite unique. This is why I gave it such a high rating. However, I must say that when I got it, I never really ended up listening to it as much as other really great mixes. It kind of got boring rather quickly. Its not a very exciting mix, lets put it like that. A low 4.
Agreed.......2006-07-22
At first I was very turned off my the mix, simply because it is so very dark and plodding. But there are so many intricacies that can be heard throughout, proof that Dear pays very close attention to mixing smoothly. Some moments are spacey, others damn irritating, but overall a very unique experience. Argy's "Rhino in a glass shop" has a schlocky beat, and is very deep and funky. Not quite up there, but a damn good effort.
A brooding, futuristic techno experience........2006-06-20
From the opening, distorted, cult like vocals you know you are in for a dark trip through techno and minimal. With the exception of a few lighter tech house sounds, like when Dear slips in a very short (2:30) segment of the catchy melody of Ame's Raj, this remains a full mix of gritty and somewhat spooky techno. I wouldn't call this spacey, just futuristic, as it is brings to mind the gritty, industrial look of the very appropriate CD cover.
The mix is just about as perfect as it can get, with virtually no hint of track transitions. With mostly percussion and barely any melodies, these stripped down, primal tracks just bleed into each other with surgical precision. Believe me when I say, there isn't a bad track on here, and you can let it play from start to finish whether it's the first time hearing it, or the 10th. One of my favorite mixes of the year, any genre.

Reveiw on both Audion samplers.......2004-04-16
I understand that there are several other albums also called "The Best of Both Worlds." The previous reviewer can't be talking about one of THOSE, is he??? I'm thinking that there was a mistake. The lable mentioned above is "Rykodisc." The image shows the one from the Audion Recording Company. Which album is this space meant for?
Anyway, as for "The Best of Both Worlds: The Second Audion Sampler" -as well as "First Edition: The Audion Sampler" - I would recommend them to any fan of electronic music. Here are some of the artists I found available on amazon.com: Barry Cleveland, Don Slepian, Anthony Phillips, Emerald Web and Synergy (I understand that his albums are being reissued on another lable, as of this writing).
As I review each tune featured on both samplers, I might as well let you know that I don't own all albums featured in them. Some albums are currently in print under a different lable. These tunes are in no particular order. Maybe I'll start with my least favorite.
THE WORLD AFTER APRIL: In my opinion, the worst part of "First Edition." A 6-minute excerpt from a 23 minute piece by Synergy, which I think is the worst part of "Computer Experiments." I'm also a fan of experimental advant-garde electronic music, but I find the whole 23 minute piece kinda hard to listen to after a while. Half the length would've been better. The "Artificial Intelligence" tracks I would rather hear. At least the excerpt in "First Edition" is long enough.
REFLECTIONS: This is a pleasant way to start "First Edition." Don Slepian's album "Reflections" is rather pleasant to listen to, as a whole. "Introspection" is currently in print which has "Reflections" and "Joy," two of the best tracks from the album.
ABRASAX: Barry Cleveland's mesmerizing work. The other's in his album "Mythos" are also mesmerizing. My least favorite may be "Sophia," but I do listen to it for the heck of it. "Aeon," "Abrasax," and "Mythos" can also be found in "Memory & Imagination." Although I don't own that one (at least, not yet), I have a feeling that the album could've included "Fire Mist" since I think it's a neat piece that lasts under 2 minutes.
NOVA: From Neil Nappe's only album "July." Hard to get these days. Played on MIDI guitar with no keyboards and some kind of drumming device. The whole album is pretty good. "Nova" stands out from the other tracks. It's like being in a planetarium. I've read that Neil Nappe might go back to recording someday.
CONNECTIONS TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD: By Roger Powell (formely of some group called UTOPIA). Fun to listen to. That's all I can say.
CATSPAW: By Emerald Web. I can't say much, but it's not bad.
RUSHCUTTERS: By Garry Hughes. One of the best tracks on "First Edition."
The tunes just mentioned were from "First Edition." Here are the ones from the second sampler (again in no particular order).
GLASSHOUSE 3: In my opinion, better than "Catspaw" (also by Emerald Web). I notice that amzon.com has only 1 Emerald Web album currently in print, which does not have either one of the tunes from the audion samplers. I'm not sure about getting it, but one reviewer said it's good.
VOLUNTARY DREAMING: Another mesmerizing work by Barry Cleveland. Also on "Memory & Imagination."
SONIC PERFUME: My favorite piece by Don Slepian. Currently on "Sea of Bliss." If "Sea of Bliss" would be easier to get, I might get it.
A WOMAN'S SONG: Have you heard "The Bulgarian Shepherdess Song" from "The Music of Cosmos?" This is the same tune, but done in a neat instrumental way with synthesizers. I have not gotten "Beauty In The Beast" by Wendy Carlos (most famous for "Switched-On Bach"), but I might get that, sooner or later.
ESSENCE: It's like meditating. By Laraaji, the same guy who did "Day of Radiance (Ambient 3)."
THROUGH THE BLACK HOLE and PLUTO GARDEN: I'm getting "Private Parts and Pieces VII" which includes those 2 tunes by Anthony Phillips (former Genesis member). I wonder how good his other stuff would be when I listen to them.
SUNBOUND: From Kevin Braheny's album "Galaxies." I suspect that the album was originally going to be released by Audion. Well, the Audion Recording Company went out of business. Eventually, "Galaxies" is released on the Hearts of Space label. Pretty good album, too. The same tune would be entitled "Going Home" instead of "Sunbound."
ZANZIBAR: I think as good as "Rushcutters" (also by Garry Hughes).
METROPOLITAN THEME: This is more tonal than "The World After April" (of course). Just one of the best tracks from "Metropilitan Suite," one of the best Synergy albums. My favorites on that album are "Into the Abyss," and "Restone."
MOONWIND: By Wavestar. Not bad. That's all I can say.
And to mention the remaining favorites from the artists I could not find at amazon.com:
Jim Bartz: "Colour Stills," So' Ho: "Golden Point," Daniel Grey: "Arc," and Russel Brower: "Ascension"
The CDs may be out of print, but it's possible to get them used - especially the second sampler. Just be aware about the other "Best of Both Worlds" albums, as mentioned above.
world music.......2001-12-10
The best songs here are those which are not trying to crossover. Special mention to Mikey Dread. Not up to his 'Dread at the Controls' album but still...and then, just when you are feeling slightly let down, the voice of angels, Dzintars a womens choir with angel voices...

A Soundtrack in Search of a Movie.......2006-08-07
This is a really fine CD of music that has passed the test of repeated listenings days after picking it up on a whim. The music featured on this disc harks back to the 1980's and must have been quite innovative at the time...clearly Synergy is the granddad of Juno Reactor and similar ambient electronica music groups (and is a distant relative of groups roughly contemporary like Tangerine Dream). All instrumentals here, folks, and heavy on the synthesizer; much of the album sounds like the soundtrack for an '80's science fiction movie that never was, and reminds me (nostalgically, yes) of the soundtracks for "Tron" or "2010" especially. A couple of the tracks veer dangerously close to the cheesy and sentimental for my tastes, but overall this is a CD of excellent music in this genre.
Great electronic music: too bad it's out of print (again!).......2004-05-15
I had the fortune to buy my copy of Synergy's 'Audion' off of the hands of the artist himself (Larry Fast), a few years ago at a gig where he teamed up with Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta and another guitarist (almost the exact dream band that accompanied Peter Gabriel in his early eighties albums/tours) in Phoenix. The album is pure electronic joy: reminds me a lot of Tangerine Dream and early Vangelis, which is to say it's a great piece of electronic music. Never a dull track and never overdoing for the sake of musical virtuosity. It is quite unfortunate that once again this album, originally released in 1981, is out of print. If you ever can get a hold of a used copy, do so!
Closer to rock..........2000-04-02
Perhaps under the influence of Peter Gabriel (for whom he played keyboards), Larry Fast toned down his grand orchestral sweeps and focused on more succinct rock arrangements for this CD. The results were generally good, especially on the almost-heavy-metal "Revolt on L-5" and the more laid-back "Terminal Hotel." The most prominent sound on both of these tracks is the insistent electric percussion, which sounds like a rock drum set more than anything else. The grand approach is still evident on a few songs, especially "Electric Blue" (which goes on a bit long) and "Flight of the Looking Glass," which sounds like an outtake from one of Fast's earlier CD's (not that that is a slur). After this, the exoticism of "Shibolet" is another refreshing change. My favorite track, however, is the opener "Orbit Five," a wonderfully brief study that is like a haiku or a clever epigram.
The prehistory of Analog and Digital Synthesis.......2000-03-29
Larry Fast has always been an inspiration to all of us who work in the world of composition and synthesis. This album really stretches the limits of the imagination and yet it bridges the gap of classical and avante-garde techniques. Synergy has always been a vehicle for innovation and techniques in recording and synthesis. My favorite is "After The Earthquake" where he paints a facade of determination and unrelenting pride; the piece is fit for a seminar for success. Even with all the technology at hand (at that time) he never fails to realize that the melody and in whole, the composition is still the driving force behind an excellent piece.
Synergy's Magnum Opus.......2000-03-11
Synergy's best album, and one of the truly best electronic instrumental synth albums ever made. All of Larry Fast's (Synergy) works are worthy, and they were certainly original, but this CD has the makings of a true masterpiece. There are elements of so many styles of music here, but all done in an aesthetic, harmonic way. Unlike so many electronic artists and albums of today, Audion contains not only listenable, plesant music, but challenging compositions. If you buy only one Synergy CD, make it this one.
