Their second album and first for Interscope is almost wholly brilliant. Like Mogwai, Sigur Ros and a dozen others, TVOTR excels at making slowly-evolving tunes with vaguely anthemic choruses and lots of loud-soft dynamics. Unlike virtually any of those other bands, TV on the Radio mix a genuine and actual songwriting ability with their knack for finding sounds that appear to be "new." This record is crisper-sounding and incorporates more dance-based elements, but it's essentially a pop album. While the lack of the free web-released "Dry Drunk Emperor, a tribute to President Bush, is initially a bummer, the album percolates with enough pre-apocalyptic tension to satisfy anyone. In a Prince-pitched falsetto, the group sings "I was a lover/ Before this war," While throughout, the combination of melody and invention is always pitch-perfect (well, except on "Province" and "Let the Devil In," those songs sort of suck.) People of Earth: please make this band into total superstars and buy several copies of their album: one for the car, another for the office, etc. What we really need in our popular music is more weirdness, and more truth. --Mike McGonigal

More like a 4.5!!.......2007-08-04

These guys get a price for arrangements and versatility. Enjoyable album that I consider a notch above Gnarls Barkley "St. Elsewhere" (which is also quite creative) which certainly should earn them a 4.5 stars for their creative talents. Good songs, entertaining and offer a "bang for the buck". These guys are a lot of fun to listen to and I enjoyed most of their lyrics and feel they are quite a decent addition to my music collection which seems to be growing by the day. I have my bank account to attest for that. It is becoming increasingly difficult to refrain from purchasing more and more music so whenever possible I like music that is HOT, simple as that. I always read reviews from other buyers before I even think about making a purchase (don't like the feeling of getting burned with a weak selection) and of course I go to Metacritic, AMG, etc and when I find something that on the average is considered by many a superior work that is when I zero in and probably buy it. I only listen and buy Rock, Alternative, anything but jazz (on the words of the great Frank Zappa: "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny") latin rock for sure (it is hard to believe how good some of this bands are:ex:Cafe Tacuba) salsa, world music, whatever kind of sound moves the soul, elicits a response from the emotional center for music is the great "mover and shaker" in my otherwise comfortable and predictable existance. TV on the Radio "Return to Cookie Mountain" is a welcome addition, pretty decent tunes and I seek for no more than that. Just want the best of what is out there in the Free World. 4.5 stars for a solid well worthy CD. Did I forget to thank all the good people who voice their valuable opinions? Thank you, thank you. Come to think of it I am going to light up and listen "Return to Cookie Mountain" again, but this time since it will be at home at loud volume. Go Go Go!!!!

Play it loud!.......2007-07-11

Start at the first track, with its unstoppable beat, WILD horn hook, and impassioned vocals. If you make it through that without 1) blowing your speakers, 2) hitting the repeat button, or 3) running in the opposite direction, the rest of the album will reward you. It takes a few listens to unfold, but once you "get it" you won't want to stop hearing it.

I have to completely agree with what "Unlistenable" (callahan) had to say about this record. I have given it a try on long road trips, blasting on my home stereo, with headphones, etc. I don't get it. I WANTED to "get it". Even after "not getting it", I tried again.
I had read/heard so much about this album, that I figured it would be a pleasure/treasure.
Basically, it sucks!. No cohesion whatsoever-none.
"Wolf Like Me" is the ONLY stand out track, likley because it actually has some form of melody/riff. It is a very, very good song to add to any compilation you may be making for your summer mix. Do yourself a favor, buy THAT track on ITunes and skip the rest! The ONE STAR RATING IS FOR THAT TRACK ALONE!
P.S. I disagree with that other reviewer's comment likening this to OK Computer as being overrated too. THAT disc has plenty of great musical moments going on!

Different but good..........2007-05-26

I gave this album a couple of listens and was glad I did. It's original but I am not someone who gives bad music a pass just because it is different - it has to be good too. I am a little surprised that "Wolf Like Me" was the first single since that song seems sort of flat and boring to me, but "I Was a Lover", "Hours" and "Let the Devil In"(which was one of the only songs the Amazon reviewer hated) were all very good. And I can't believe everyone isn't raving about "A Method" which to me is an incredible tune(was someone channeling Brian Wilson?) that's worth the price of the album all by itself.

I listened to this Cd long before I had children, and now my daughter (age 2) listens to it every night as she is going to sleep. This is probably the 4th or 5th copy I have bought as presents for new babies. I can't say it enough. This is the best lullaby/relaxation CD I have ever heard.

The Best Soundtrack Ever. Period........2006-11-25

The entire "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy is absolutely amazing and all are groundbreaking achievements in filmmaking but in my opinion they wouldn't be as good without the amazing master work of composer Howard Shore. 'The Return of the King', in particular, has the most expressive, emotional and dramatic music of the three films which perfectly complements the emotion and drama of the movie. The music alone is a work of genius. From the orchestral music to Annie Lennox's "Into the West", this soundtrack is truly astonishing.

Modern Day Symphony for Middle Earth.......2006-11-02

One session of listening to Howard Shore's breathtaking score for LOTR--RETURN OF THE KING and you instantly appreciate why he was repeatedly nominated for an Oscar.

Sweeping orchestral pieces transport you to the epic battles fought, while softer instrumentals summon the characters' pains suffered and quiet triumphs obtained.

If you own the other 2 CDs in the series, this is a no brainer. If you don't, ironically, starting here gives you a taste of all 3 as Shore weaves together a final tapestry of the trilogy in an expert fashion!

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. And the battle scenes in "Return of the King" are incredible visuals, blending live action and computer-generated imagery so seamlessly and densely that it boggles the mind. But what would they be with only screams and snorts and scuffles to give them voice? It's Shore's frenetic, string-laden, brass-filled, drum-spurred fury that truly gives them life, waxing, waning and cueing the audience as to when the greatest menace is about to threaten the war-weary heroes. The musical themes from the first two movies continue to be developed here, wending their way in and out of expanded interpretations whose dense complexity rivals that of Tolkien's story, not to mention Peter Jackson's filmmaking itself. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for authentic music from bygone ages, try the real thing! There are many fine groups out there. Here's just a sampling: Anonymous 4 (pure-voiced sacred chant by four women), The Baltimore Consort (jaunty popular music from the Renaissance), David Munrow's Early Music Consort of London (simply perfection), Christian Mendoze's Musica Antiqua (lively, percussive Renaissance dance music), The Toronto Consort (great variety), Ensemble Unicorn (worlds of fun!), Wolgemut (brash buzzies and bagpipes with attitude), and the magical early/folk fusion of Cantiga and Burlap Lute. Have some fun with them and live your own fantasy!

Bored of the Rings..........2006-09-13

First off, I'm fifteen.

I'd like to caution anyone considering buying this soundtrack. My sister has all three (Fellowship, Two Towers, Return), and I have to say that by what I know, this is not that great of a soundtrack. It's just overrated. To understand my point, listen to the music sample for song #16. At first, you may think "AWESOOMMME! This is so coooool!". But listen to it again, and you should find out that it's actually annoying. If you want to hear the "AAAAAAHHH"'s done right, listen to John Williams' Star Wars III, numbers 3 and 4. Now THAT is good music. Unlike ROTK (Return of the King), it's not just some mindless noise. I'm going to make a list of excellent soundtracks that you should consider waaaay over this one:

For a quiet, moving soundtrack, Get "A Beautiful Mind".

For action\adventure-type music, get one, several, or all the soundtracks below instead of LOTR:

~Jaws (don't think that you've "heard it all" from the movie already, because you haven't)

~Star Wars III

~Jurassic Park I

For War music, "The Patriot" is a very well done soundtrack. Based on reviews, "Band of Brothers" and "Saving Private Ryan" seem spectacular as well.

As far as horror music, "Signs" looks pretty good, as does "The Ring". But if you really want a horror soundtrack, Williams' "Close encounters of the Third Kind" is probably the best of horror. Check the reviews for this one.

There you have it, folks. Before you buy this overrated soundtrack, at least look into these that I've listed, based on your interests (Horror, Action, etc.)

If only Jackson had gotten Williams to make these soundtracks...things could have been so much better...

If you like classical movie soundtracks...you NEED this!.......2006-09-08

My brother and his wife to be walked down the aisle to selections from this soundtrack. With my being a lover of classical music especially that from movie scores...I was instantly hooked. Movie scores have always mystified me even in my own life...made me kind of look back differenly at the world moving around me. I cried at my brother's wedding when his bride to be came out to this music and cried even harder when I sat in the comfort of my office, and then my bedroom while listening to Annie Lennox pour passion and soul into the song "into the west". So beautifully written, anyone can find some meaning that touches their life in some personal way...through this beautiful song.

Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.

Great short version!.......2006-12-06

If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.

A long time favorite.......2006-08-26

This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.

The Best Recording of this Show Available.......2006-04-21

I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:

1)It has the original London cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.

I bought this CD as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had misplaced the one that we had and needed a new one. This is one of our favorite cd's. Such beautiful music.

Outstanding Jazz-Pop from a Gifted Young Singer.......2007-07-04

Amazon.com has put Sara Gazarek's "Yours" in my face for about a year and counting. When a multinational corporation does that to me, I tend to say "no" on principle. Not a good reason for ignoring Sara Gazarek, though, so I plunked down some cash on this and gave it a listen.

Maybe I should quit being so obstinate. This is an excellent recording. There is a group of fine young singers (I'm thinking of Jacqui Naylor, Erin Bode, Judith Owen and, to a lesser extent, Jackie Allen) who are jazz singers crossing into pop, and have released some good-to-great recordings in the past few years. This is toward the top of that milieu, and Sara Gazarek definitely deserves mention in the same breath with those others.

The first thing that hits me about this c.d. is how clean it sounds. Certainly Joel Moss and Chris Hobson, the sound engineers, deserve kudos for that; but I'm also talking about Sara Gazarek's voice. Her diction, phrasing, intonation and consistency of volume throughout the ranges of her voice are first-rate. And soundwise, her voice reminds me a lot of Karrin Allyson (and that's a very good thing!).

My favorites on this c.d. are: her gorgeous duet with pianist Josh Nelson on Billy Joel's "And So It Goes"; the addition of some even more gorgeous string bass bowing by Erik Kortes with Nelson on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"; and the closing track with strings, a heartfelt tribute to a mentor, Ludvig Girdland, entitled "Original 4."

As beautiful as those are, though, that is not to slight anything else on this c.d. (including and especially "Carey", a nod to the patron sainte of this group of singers, Joni Mitchell). The whole disc will get your alpha waves in order and put you into a state of bliss. It's worth a listen. No, it's worth a bunch of listens. RC

Sara Gazarek has done it again..........2007-06-10

Having seen her live at the Vic in Santa Monica on 2/22/07, The McCallum Theater in Palm Desert on 3/17/2007, and at the Catalina Jazz Club (aka Catalina Bar & Grill) in Hollywood on 4/23/07 with her previewing "most" of the songs on this album....it is just a pleasure to now have them in hand.

First off this album is in general a very mellow, mostly relective song list...with some very brightly lit exceptions ("Carey" by Joni Mitchell among others). Sara demonstrates a willing and highly competent ability to have musical expeditions beyond the safety of her very, upbeat, hopeful, easy going songs.. Her fans will appreciate all those "beyond-the-perimeter" efforts here.

The Billy Joel song "And So It Goes" trumps everything on this album IMHO ...and it translates from her live performances of this song to CD quite well...but it is obvious to see her do this piece in person that she is taken by the song almost like she was in a meditative trance....this song digs deep and you cannot avoid the cuts ....and the sequel on this album to this is probably the very aggressively sung piece written by Leonard Cohen, "Halleluah". It was surprising hearing her add this to her song list and her rendition of this with the wider acoustic capabilities of the McCallum left you stunned....it is an expansive composition..full of irony and Sara performed this flawlessly...maybe she will try Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat" as was done by Jennifer Warnes and available on Amazon ..in a new ablum which I hope Sara is starting to do RIGHT NOW! The bass play of Erik Kertes is worth the price of admission on "Halleluah". This studio created version is perfect...

You have to add again that her accompanying group is simply the best ..wow......They are a stand alone trio in their own rights...Josh Nelson (keyboards), Erik Kertes on bass, and Matt Slocum, percussion....all understated and perfectly matched to Sara Gazarek's moods and talents...and timing....so if you get a chance to go to her concerts..you are in for a night!!..and Sara is very, very generous in terms of the length of her performance play list...so do not miss her in person...her voice in person is no different than on her albums...

And yes there was a 2nd album after "Yours" and I would consider this "Return to You" Sara Gazarek's 3rd album. She really should promote and pop out a zillion of that "2nd album" as well ...think they might be available from her on her site...."Sara Gazarek Live at the Jazz Bakery"...this was not "incidental music" by any strectch of the imagination and MUST be included as a major part of her work so far..has to be...end of argument.

Buy "Return to You" ...buy "Yours" if you don't already have it...

and of course "Live at the Jazz Bakery" if you can figure out a way to do it.....

See Gazarek in person each and every time you can.see her web site....it has all the dates......

Meanwhile we will wait impatiently for her next CD....for now we will just wear these three CD's out until they are no longer silver but clear!!!

Sara is going to be THE premier jazz vocalist for then next few decades. Here in "Return to You" she has broken some of the ground rules and went to areas where you would not have anticipated.....and we have gladly followed her....slick, sophisticated, smooth, upbeat IS her bedrock style but she is capable of soaring elsewhere....this album provides ample proof of her artistic capabilities and range!!!!

Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

For people who don't know, dj Jazzy Jeff is a respectalbe dj
in his own right. Plus he's the man at the control board of
Jill Scott. A lot of these new rapper coming out now days, to
me, don't have any skills. Dj Jazzy Jeff has m.c.s like Method Man,
Rymefest, and Big Daddy Kane just to name a few.

Which is what a lot of these rappers and producers need because right now Jazzy Jeff is showin cats how its done. This a solid album with a nice blend of new unsigned artist and artist who are vets in the game. Grae, J-Live, Pos, and Raheem D. don't disappoint in their features. Which boost things up as far as my grade. Meth could've had a better track, but Kardnall came through with a hot joint. Chynablac had the worst feature on the album with bad singing and off key lyrics. JAZZ DON'T EVER WAIST A HOT BEAT LIKE THAT AGAIN!!! However, solid album by the most underated DJ in the U.S. Buy this if you want Real Hip Hop.

Take this from someone who tags, and hopes to one day DJ/Produce for some great MC's:

-BE WARNED: This is pure Hip-Hop. One of those albums that makes commercial & radio-hiphop lovers frown and condescendingly say," WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?"

-The lyricists on this outing define Jazzy's impeccable taste for HipHop as musical/emotional expression. It's just good music.
Expect nothing but 'Raw & Beautiful' from this one (and definitely listen to the above samples).

-How's the production? This can be answered with some word association:
Pete Rock, DJ Muggs, DJ Premier, J Dilla, Madlib, Buck Shot, 9th Wonder, Magnif, ?uestlove - starting to get the picture?
If not, take a listen to their work too (if you haven't already - hahaha).

Don't file this under CRUNK, SWISHA, CLUB, POP, UNDERGROUND, ART-HOP, TRIP-HOP (or whatever else the many "expert-opinion" music mags are buzzin'these days).

Keep reppin' the "four-elements" (DJing, MCing, Tagging & Breaking).

Hip-Hop Is Back.......2007-06-27

Sometimes, I wonder if Hip-Hop is dead. Then a CD like this comes along. Great CD by the greatet DJ of all time.

Hip-Hop has transformed into so many things that it's amazing that originals like Dj Jazzy Jeff are even still in the game. True enough, he was one half of the infamous rap duo that also featured The Fresh Prince (now Will Smith). But Jeff Townes has been doing production work the entire time, eventually forming A Touch of Jazz production company and then releasing his own material. His latest project The Return of the Magnificent is a follow-up to his original 2002 BBE offering The Magnificent and features a slew of new emcees, old Hip-Hop heads, and equally talented soul singers. Twone Dabz gives the metaphor-heavy "Hip-Hop" as well as "Go See The Doctor 2K7" where he gives a near comical account of getting 'burned' by a woman. Kel Spencer does a good job with "The Definition" while Eshon Burgundy and Black Ice ride over the smoothed-out cut "Run That Back." Chinah Blac serenades over "Touch Me With Your Handz," a track that masterfully reworks the beat for the Floetry hit "Say Yes." J Live does an okay job with "Practice" even though it sounds a bit amateurish in its delivery. Blacksmith Records' own Jean Grae takes another stab at establishing her name in the Hip-Hop arena with "Supa Jean." Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall pops up out of nowhere for the album standout "She Was So Flyy." Underrated R&B singer Raheem Devaughn says it all with the aptly-titled jam "My Soul Ain't For Sale." The Hip-Hop pioneers break out full throttle on the album as well. Posdnuos of De La Soul fame represents for the old school on "Let Me Hear U Clap," Method Man gives his lyrical assault for the groove "Hold It Down," Big Daddy Kane shows off his rawness on "The Garden," and CL Smooth showcases his signature flow for "All I Know." And newcomers like Dave Ghetto ("Come On"), Peedi Peedi of State Property fame ("Brand New Funk 2K7") and Rhymefest ("Jeff N Fess") all show and prove on the respective tracks too. The Return of the Magnificent is prime real estate for anybody looking for a well-rounded mix of old and new Hip-Hop, a sprinkling of good R&B, and a touch of Jazz.

Return's title and various lyrics acknowledge Wu-Tang's self-built mythology, but Ol' Dirty Bastard's solo debut, like the man himself, runs on its own idiosyncratic power. ODB is one those people who is the life of the party, the only one with personality out of the group. Even though he is not the best MC out of the Wutang Clan he is not the worst(hello Ugod anybody). Standout Tracks: SHIMMY SHIMMY YA, BROOKLYN ZOO, HIPPA TO DA HOPPA, RAWHIDE, DAMAGE, THE STOMP, SNAKES, PROTECT YA NECKII THE ZOO, CUTTIN HEADZ and HARLEM WORLD. I'll admit that I still laugh my a** off when I hear Drunk Game(Sweet Sugar Pie). Filler: Brooklyn ZooII(Tiger Crane)(Ghostface verse was fire but the rest of the song is...... and Dirty Dancin(sounds like it was poorly mixed). Bottom Line: This Is ODB's best effort and unfortunately the best album he ever made(check every album after this one if you have doubt). Rza and company werent slacking on the production and Ol' Dirty and the guest appearances were exceptional on this album. REST IN PEACE RUSSELL JONES AKA ODB AKA DIRT MCGIRT AKA you know the rest!

Like common perceptions of ODB, I thought he was a clown. After listening to this whole album, I think ODB is a modern day Screamin' Jay Hawkins. When ODB rhymes welfare with.....welfare, not only is it hilarious, but incredibly heady as well, considering the shame associated with that word and the powerful and ironic way he rhymes it twice in a couplet. Forget all the serious hip hop heads. What's genius about ODB is that he's oblivious to pretension. He's pure.

I remember when this came out when I was a teenager. My friend had it playin in his tape deck, I didn't know what to think. "What the hell is this?" There's no father to his style, total freedom of self expression! Brilliant, I had to have it. Swiped his copy and never gave it back! Played it more than any other tape I ever owned. Played the damn thing till it wouldn't play no more and was forced to find a buddy with a copy on disc to steal off of! Haha..

My personal fav of the Wu catalog, hell it's one of my favorite albums of all time! Nothing sounds like it. One of the most original and misunderstood artists, this album still sounds just as crazy and intense as the day it first came out. My favorite tracks are Don't You Know and Goin Down, "Soooome..wheeere oover the raainboww!" Come on, are you kiddin me? The beats were grimmey and erie, mixing perfect with ODB's drunken attitude and style. The contributions from Wu members help ground the album with their straightforward rhymes while at the same time complimenting Dirt McGirt's unique vocal approach. This album stand in a class all it's own. No-one will ever be able to duplicate what this MC brought to the table, let alone know where to even start!

This album is an example of a artist doin his own thing and goin for it.
If you want to hear the same old thing, another boring, sharp dressin, mediocre MC, spitting the same old monotone raps that we've been hearing for the last countless years than turn on the TV and save your money. "This is something old,,, and dirty....... and duurrtayyy!

Rest in Peace O.D.B.

Solid Wu Tang Solo by a very dope yet very wierd mc...ODB.......2006-09-06

I'm not a huge fan of ODB but I love Wu Tang So I eventually gave this album a try. First let me start off by saying there were only 2 or 3 tracks I was feeling, I donno it was pretty hard to get adjusted too for some reason. The sound was wierd especially just hearing O.D.B without any back most of the time. But Time went on and some day I just finally started getting into this album, so to make it sure unlike most wu albums it may take awhile for some maybe few to get into. I was many people who at once though the rzarecta wasted some very precious beats on O.D.B(Like I was saying b4 i really wasnt diggin most of the album but as time went by i really started to appreciate it and started getting adjusted more to O.D.B crazy yet very profound lyrics). Its not the best wu solo out there but it still deffenitley is a must have. O.D.B rips the mic in some pretty dope songs and RZA backs it up with his usual crazy style of Kun Fu crazy wu tang banger beats.

ODB solo debut is niiiice -- R.I.P........2006-05-01

The 2nd member of the Wu to drop a solo did it with fashioon. Everyone loved the Single Shimmy Shimmy Ya and the odd and crazy drunk style was off the charts. With 16 songs you get a good deal of ODB but guests are heavy, on about half of the songs and all of the Wu is the album other then Inspectah Deck and U-God and some Wu-related cats as well. Production is the classic Wu age sound and mostly handled by the RZA (13 of the 17 songs). With ODB, True Master and 4th Disciple all doing a little as well. Of the 16 songs there is 2 or 3 I skip over, I can only take so much off his drunk rambling some times. A few are almost classic material or classic and the rest are good with maybe 3 that are ok. For real Wu fans and fans of the ODB you have to have this, it's definitely his best solo album.

I bought this CD to play at work for background music and it's great for that. The only thing missing is the usually obligatory 20th Century Fox theme before the main Star Wars theme. Other than that, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus do a very fine job with Maestro Williams' music, indeed.

Wonderful!!!.......2007-05-14

I bought this for my husband but fell in love with it myself. I had never heard of it but now consider Edvard Grieg my favorite composer. It is magnificent.

Relaxes your mind........2005-12-30

The peer gynt suite is very delicate and it relaxes me. Whenever I hear the first movement of Peer Gynt, I feel as if I am walking along the forest at dawn with sunshine passing through the tall trees. It calms me and I usually close my eyes to imagine Grieg's creative masterpiece. What also interests me the fourth movement. It starts with slow and quiet and then slowly the music accelerates with power. Like the title, "Mountain King," says itself, you can feel the grandness of the music toward the end.

The piano concerto in a minor is my favorite. This music seem to convey the full spectrum from quiet and delicate or gracious feel of music to more powerful and magnificent all proportionally adequately. It is very enjoyable. Whenever I listen to this music, I feel as if I am resting in the high mountainn looking at the full panorama. Anyway, that's just my imagination I feel from his music and of course, yours can be very different from mine.

As for the CD quality, I hear no distraction sound and it is recorded well, I think. The little cover booklet can be informative about Grieg. Also nice price from Amazon.

Relaxing music from a great composer.......2005-08-02

I absolutely loved the string music on Track 3. I remembered it from an old PC RPG called Quest for Glory IV. I was disappointed to find out that Track 4 was only a minute and a half long, because I grew up loving that song from the various places I heard it (Fantasia and a kid Detective PC game from the late 80's).
Overall, though, Grieg's greatest hits is a must-have for collectors of classical music. Grieg is revered as Norway's greatest composer of all time and he certainly has a knack for creating imagery of bustling fjords and majestic mountainsides with interlaced river ravines.

Better than just an introduction.......2004-04-28

This CD goes beyond just introducing Grieg. It is a truly beautiful and for me, invaluable collection of this excellent composer. Grieg had an inimitable gift for exploring emotion, often sadness and nostalgia. However, he also had a large touch of the virtuoso, as demonstrated by the famous Piano Concerto. True, the last 2 movements are not included here; however, the first is still stunning. The Peer Gynt Suites are wonderfully played, and Ase's Death and Heartwounds are especially noteworthy - the lush orchestral sounds of these gorgeous pieces unfold exquisitely. Homage March is a nice change of pace, upbeat and with a memorable theme, and Leonard Bernstein moves at a devilish pace in March of the Trolls. This CD will not disappoint you - buy it today!

For an intro to Greig, this is great. The "hall of the mountain king" is done very well.
