Log onto an India.Arie lyrics page and you won't come away expecting an easy-breezy listen--here's an artist, remember, who made a name for herself by declaring her disdain for silicone and Cristal on her 2001 debut. What's consistently a revelation for new recruits to the Arie camp, then, is how good the music makes you feel. No matter how heavy the subject matter (and it still gets heavy--God surfaces in the first verse of "Intro," the prayerful opening song), she delivers it in such a way that it ends up feeling like homespun wisdom--accessible, cloudless, and heartening. Testimony, no minor R&B/soul achievement, is full of such earth-mother moments: "The Heart of the Matter," a cover of the Don Henley song, is what a hug might sound like if it were music; "There's Hope" reminds tunefully that you don't have to pay to smile ("You better thank God for that"); "Private Party" points up the benefits of getting naked before a mirror and liking what you see (impossible as that sounds, it'll seem less so after listening); and "I Am Not My Hair," a sexy thumper featuring Akon, celebrates not the hair, not the skin, but "the soul that lives within." Musically, "Testament" is a testament to the benefits of branching out; in addition to gospel and hip-hop, you'll also find country and pure pop forays here. All of it works, and works wondrously. Great Album.......2007-07-20

I can't lie, I am more of a hip-hop head than a R&B guy, but I can't front this is a great album. I heard a song from this album playing in someone else's car one day when I was coming from work and had to get it just to see how it was and I love it. This is great chill music. India.Arie is a great artist and deserves alot more acclaim than she already gets from the poetry, jazz club, type of crowd that she normally receives it from. Great overall album.

India's lyrics really speak from her soul without any sugar coating or whining. On top of that she is rhythmically and melodically talented. She keeps it real and I love her for that. Very inspirational! I recommend this album to anyone who loves r & b and has been craving some r & b with inspirational, moving lyrics that you can identify with.

India Arie's Acoustic Soul is just as advertised: grooving soul music with an acoustic bent. Arie herself plays guitar, supplemented by strings (instead of synthesizers) and drums (instead of drum machines). The first single, "Video," is a calm, confident ode to self-love, comparing the dreadlocked, petite Arie to the average girl in a video. Arie is indeed anything but average: her debut marks the auspicious return of the black female singer-songwriter, in the vein of Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Tracy Chapman, and Dionne Farris. If you like their music, with thoughtful lyrics and layers of instrumentation, you'll love this album. "Video" is fabulous, but other high points include "Ready for Love," a lament that smolders before slowly building to a crescendo, with tinkling piano, guitar, and cello swelling beneath the vocal. "Strength, Courage, and Wisdom" is an optimistic anthem that'll have you clapping your hands and swaying from side to side, and the best track on the album, "Simple," is a straightforward love song with a pulsating beat. Our generation's Nina Simone........2007-07-12

I'm a big fan of Nina Simone's but didn't really make an effort to seek out Arie's music until I heard a clip of "I am ready for love". I was instantly sold and knew that I had to have the cd and boy, does she deliver! It's soulful, intelligent, and just plain groovy. This is a musical artist who will always deliver whether or not the results are 'pop' catchy. Enjoy!

...you can tell that she is a good artist in the making from this cd, and unlike some, she proves it.. in her albums after this one.
Sorry, this cd has some good songs.. but it is not her best.
If You like India check out Raul Mildon's State Of Mind...He is very good also with the same positive lyrics...I gess If you know India you know of Donnie, if not check him out also....album, The Colored Section.

India.Arie"showed-out"creatively on this landmark album!!No one besides Lamya and Siloam Pool delivers this kind of consistant quality THROUGHOUT an album!!As a matter of fact:If Lamya,Siloam and India ever went on tour together,they could charge $200 a head,and I would be the FIRST person in line,to drop the cash!!Actually,I'd be willing to pay $400,just so I could stretch out across TWO seats,and really enjoy these three talent-laden ladies!!! Back to "Acoustic"though...The tribute to Stevie was the thing that REALLY separated India from the"pack"in my eyes..Talk about RESPECT(for your forebearers) and CLASS(a rarity in these times)!!! The CD KD has been destined to make since he found Maharaji! Great audio quality, terrific liner notes and SIX versions of the Chelisa plus "Where'd You Get That Ring?". And a great pronunciation guide that I've been wanting for years. Jai krishna Das!

Music to Make Your Heart Happy.......2007-06-21

There's something special about the Hanuman Chalisa. Maybe the way it seems to flow, unbroken reminding us that every part of life is joined to every other; maybe the sweet sound of ancient words. It never grows old. Even so, I wondered whether I needed *six* more versions, plus a repeat of the previously recorded "Ring Song."

I needn't have worried. This CD has leapt to the top of my commuting favorites, and I expect it will stay there permanently. The arrangements are sweet and varied and full of energy.

Sri Ram Chalisa is sung call as call and (sri Ram jai Ram) response - a boon to those of us who like to sing along but haven't mastered all the words .

Hallelujah Chalisa has a beautiful traditional flowing (when does he breathe?) arrangement.

Good Ole Chalisa is KD's traditional Chalisa tune, sung in a heart-warming choral style.

Nina Chalisa is a lilting, faintly medieval, all-female chorus.

Mountain Chalisa is another sweet, more traditional arrangement.

Bernie's Chalisa - my favorite - is a slightly slower, sweet, uplifting choral arrangement with phrasing that seems to make it easier to memorize the words (I'm six lines in ).

The Ring Song is a great new arrangement of the charming story of Hanuman finding the kidnapped Mother Sita, given a slightly less "rock and role" treatment than the one recorded on "Pilgrim Heart," but still lots of fun.

The second CD has two spoken versions of the Chalisa for those of us who aspire eventually to learn the words - one a slow complete recitation, the other - even slower -has each line repeated twice. My only small complaints are (a) I would have liked a slow version set to music, which makes memorization easier and (b) Driving would be safer if each line (or pair of lines) had been recorded as a separate track. That would have saved a lot of trouble searching through the disc while practicing.

Music, inspiration, an (optional) "workshop" in chant, and bliss all packaged into one CD. Krishna Das has truly offered us a masterpiece of grace.

Amazing!.......2007-05-24

This CD is truly amazing! No one can sing the Hanuman Chalesa like Krishna Das. Every variation of this song is beautiful and the additional CD of pronunciation is incredibly helpful for those of us who would like to learn how to sing along with Krishna Das' incredible voice. Every time I play this CD during one of my yoga classes, I have students asking for the name of the CD at the end of class. This CD moves me to my soul every time I listen to it. Even my five-year old tells me that listening to his CD "makes his heart happy". This is a must-have CD!

This is an amazing CD. A must for every WOMAN!!! She is a fabulous song writer and artist. The words to her songs are very inspiring and I think very young woman should listen to them and take them to heart and follow what she says. Remember "There's Hope"!!!

For me her best cd is Voyage To Inda, plus this cd is more for women but, you don't have to relate to appreciate... when the music is good its good... so I had to give this one 5 stars for songs like, Good Mourning and Wings Of Forgiveness. Also I bought this cd in the uk and got a great bonus track, the cherry on top of a good cd.

From the second I heard her debut single, "Video," in 2001, I knew that I would be a fan for life. I didn't completely love either of her first CDs. Her debut was nice, but a few songs were iffy for me. Her second album felt a little rushed and seemed like a handful of great tracks tossed in with a bunch of filler material. And I could never stand her interludes, sorry to say. By no means did I not enjoy the CDs. I would probably give both four stars, but the point is... I had never been able to listen to one of her albums straight through, even though I love her. Until now, that is.

This album was so unexpected. It was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year for me. The whole thing is amazing. I listen to it straight through all the time, interludes and all! Her voice has improved so much; it has gained a new purity and it is now smooth as butter. It glides over the tracks. The production is flawless. She has added a lot of other influences in the mix, including country and gospel. Her re-make of "Heart of the Matter" made me love the song, a small miracle in itself. I listen to "Wings of Forgiveness" every morning, as well as "I Choose" and "Better People."

In short, this album is absolutely amazing. It is one of my favorites of all time! Each song is excellent, has a catchy melody, and delivers a great message. I demand that you buy this album. I cannot wait until Volume 2, Life & Politics. She has supposedly begun recording and it's supposed to come out later this year.

Another wonderful set of cd's from Krishna Das. The chanting is beautiful, the music sublime...It doesn't get any better than this. Another beautiful CD from a Master. My fiance and I have gotten addicted to Krishna Das & listen to his CD's every morning. You can't explain perfection.....you just listen and enjoy.

moving into peace.......2007-01-19

I own a yoga studio and teach several times a week. Krishna Das' music is always a favorite, but this CD in particular is perfect for a lively, upbeat yoga practice. My students connect with the beat, helping them move smoothly through the poses, connecting with their breath. As the chants become slower, more meditative, the practice also begins to slow. It is a wonderful transition for any yoga class. I highly recommend it!

The CD contains most devoted Hindu vedic mantras with very immersive and soul filling Indian classical music.
The vedic mantras in CD traces back to more than 5000 years Vedas, there is lot of valuable information over internet.

Classy Indian Chants.......2007-07-24

This is an excellent reproduction of some of the religious chants in the Indian classical music tradition. The recitation and diction is clear and quite precise. A great introduction to religious chants for a novice taking interest in Indian classical music.

Authentic Hindu Chants.......2007-06-14

This is the perfect CD for the beginner who wants to learn Hindu chanting. The words to each song are included in the jacket. The words are easy to understand for the most part given the complexity of the language. And most importantly, the music is hauntingly beautiful. I knew this was a winner when I saw Harrison as producer.

George and Ravi combine worship and melody for a one-of-akind experience.......2007-05-04

Ravi Shankar and George Harrison are two of this world's greatest composers and musicians, so it makes sense that a unified effort would be incredible. It is, but not just because of these two men... To backtrack a little, my Mom and Dad first bought this CD when I was about five; it had George Harrison's name under the word producer and (I think) they were beginning to be interested in the Hindu faith. In those days, and for many years, I had no idea what the words they were saying meant. I was simply captivated by the repeated, strange phrases and the beautiful music they were set to. The music is still one of my favorite parts of the CD and without it, the CD would barley be half of what it is, but now being much older I have had the opportunity to delve into the booklet inside the CD case. These words, whether traditional or written by Ravi Shankar are a beauty in and of themselves. Each one prays for spiritual enlightenment, better knowledge of a diety or knowledge and wisdom in general. The recurring theme of peace and safty/tranquility among all things is also welcome. An example of this earnest praying is "O,Lord lead me from the unreal to the real. Lead me from the darkness to the light [from ignorance to knowledge]. Lead me from death to immortality. May there be peace, peace and perfect peace" ( from track 4, Asato Maa.) Also to be carefully headed are those chants which dwell proper human action, such as "You have but the right to perform action; you have no hold on the results thereof. May you not seek the rewards of action and may you never engage in wrong action.[This is not an excuse for inaction!" ( track 9, Geetaa.) There are other varied but always interesting chants here: instructions by a guru or teacher for his students (track 3, Vedic Chanting One), chants praising certain gods, and most fascinating of all, chants wishing for peace and tranquility. These such as Mangalam (track 11) and Sarve Shaam (track 16 and a huge favorite), combined with beautiful instrumental interludes (those who have seen 'Concert for George' may be reminded of Arpan), and the exquisite instrumentation and production by George Harrison (rest in Son of Hari!) come together to make a sublime and deep, enlightening musical experience. This truly a gorgeous album, incredible to listen to (though to get it just for the beatiful instruments, or the name of the producer for that matter, would be to miss the point.) If I tried to list favorites I'd probably end up listing the whole album. Here are a few highlights: Vandanaa Trayee, the opening track and a beautiful combination of introductory music, three sepearte prayers and interludes, tracks 3 and 14, the two vedic chants, Mangalam, a prayor for peace, and the similar Sarve Shaam, Asato Maa, tracks 5, 7, and 8 (7/8 CAN get repetative after a while,12 and 13 ( atmospheric intstrumental trackss), Geetaa, and a Ravi Shankar original Prabhujee. This, track 15 of 16, is a wondefully melodic, well-produced and warming, beautiful prayer for divine enlightenment and is worth a good listen. Track 2 has an interesting concept to it as well. All in all, this album is a wonderful buy for those interested in Hindu chants, beatuiful music or just spritual enlightenment. Well produced, beautiful instruments, deep, depth-filled chants- what more can the open minded listen want!? 5/5. Om shaantih, Shaantih, Shaantih [Amen; May there be peace, peace and perfect peace.]

Very peaceful and relaxing music. I got it because I am a George Harrison fan and have seen both George and Ravi Shankar in concert. I also wanted to experience more indian religous music.

There are prodigies and there is progeny. Anoushka Shankar is both. As the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, she's got bloodlines and a teacher who is one of the greatest to ever play sitar. While Anoushka has pretty good classical chops (not the best, but pretty good), Rise shows her versatility and growth as a composer, arranger, and producer. The nine-song album features her sitar along with a variety of traditional Indian and modern Western instruments. She orders the ragas logically, starting with morning and working toward the final one at the end of the night, each one capturing the mood of its particular time of day. For example, mellow opener "Prayer in Passing" would be the initial waking moments, while the mood soon gets more upbeat on "Red Sun" before the midday heat sets in for the middle tracks and brings down the tempo. Traditionalists will call it pop, but there is nothing light or disposable about Rise. --Tad Hendrickson

I loved the blend of Indian and western music. Anoushka is an amazing sitar master and certainly brings the inherited talent of her father plus her own interpertaion to this music. Great CD with ragas done on a slightly more western style.

For the fans of this type of music, she is an absolutely delight. For the neophytes like me, this is a great introduction to the culture and music of India. Her ability to play this intricate instrument is incredible, she makes it sound so easy. A couple of songs are her father's but with a new twist and emotion. It is certainly a great CD.

She is a genius and she's assembled world musicians that when combined, stretch out to a very modern sound (so not like her Dad what-so-ever.) Way lovely, mix of world music-flamenco-scat-jazz. I play it a long time, put it away and come back to it. I saw her live in Grant park in Chicago in August and watched little children all over the lawn spontaneously stand up and start to dance. I'll never forget it.

India Arie seems comfortable in her own body. She told us as much on both "Video" and "Brown Skin" from her stunning debut album, Acoustic Soul, which celebrated the diversity of feminine beauty, self-acceptance, and spirituality. She addresses similar themes on her second outing, although much of her original soul-scouring fire is gone. While she still preaches self-empowerment, many of her lyrics veer toward the trite, and that's not where we expected to go on this Voyage to India. In fact, there are very few self-revelatory moments like the ones on Soul. Arie seems bent on journeying to the center of womankind's mind, rather than unearthing more of her own autobiography, casting herself as adviser to the disempowered. But that is not where Arie shines. When she strips her voice down to its unvarnished essence--leaving all the imperfections in the mix--she is a lithe, ethereal presence. She's capable of raising chills, as when she sings of a man who foretells his death on "Good Man." Or on "Complicated Man," where she lets her voice run ragged, brimming with raw emotion while describing her imperfect love. Look, as a lover of music I began to give up on music because of the same old topics being sang over and over, how may times can you say I miss you or don't leave me or sex me!!!. India Arie helps to save music for me, she has alot of new topics like 2. little things 3. talk to her 4. Slow down, to name a few. Every song, I mean every song is good !!!!
Please note.. I am not the best reviewer in the world and what I say may or may not help you but, I know good music...so if you like India, check out Raul Midon's State Of Mind...he also sings about positive thing and love...I gess if you know of India you know of Donnie's The Colored Section...if not check him out also.

This question is asked at times..who is your fovorate singer and I never had an answer because I did not fell any artist earned my vote, as they come out with one or two albums, the first one is good then they go down hill (or more importantly, she has her own style of song writing)... but with India, she gets better...making her a real artist.......you see for example when India Arie wins say a Grammy and she says.. I would like to thank God..he says....Your Welcome, with some of these so called artist say.. I would like to thank God..he says...What You Thanking Me For, I did not help you with that s..t..(oops forgive myslef)...you came up with.

This album really surpriced me coming from a secular artist. I admire the soul connectin that is clearly felt in her music. I liked this CD so much that I gave it to a teenage female friend of mine. It's a coming of age CD with wisdom written all over it and I know she'll appreciate it. Its the(older) women teaching the younger women. I appreciate her wisdom and boldness to speak it!

Now that Bollywood (Bombay-plus-Hollywood--an affectionate nickname for India's terrifyingly productive film industry) has finally gone mainstream in the West (Bride and Prejudice, Monsoon Wedding), many American listeners are curious to know more about the genre's extremely busy soundtrack singers. Club-goers are already primed by Bhangra nights, but for the uninitiated, the high-pitched female voices, loosey-goosey chorales, and wild-and-wooly instrumentals may take some getting used to. However, anyone willing to make the effort will be quickly rewarded. This compilation is a great place to start as it is well-produced and fairly typical of the genre at its best. Among the male singers, Kishore Kumar is well accounted for. Of the big female names, Lata Mangeshkar is represented but her even-more-famous sister, Asha Bhosle, is not. But Chitra, who sounds like an Indian Dolly Parton, almost makes up for her absence. Anyone who wants to know still more about this most flagrantly hedonistic of musical styles is directed to the exhaustively annotated Rough Guide To Bollywood and Manteca's delightful I Love Bollywood. --Christina Roden

I fell in love with Bhangra, so I ventured over to Bollywood for a similar flavor. Bollywood has a much different feel than does Bhangra. The beats and musical arrangement are more similar to Western culture than are Bhangra, so I was pleased with the presentation, but found that I am much more of a Bhangra fan. I enjoy travelling musically away from Western sounds. Bollywood lacks the hard dohl beat of Bhangra, but does hang on to the cultural echos of India. I do enjoy my Bollywood album, but I still favor my Bhangra favorites. If you haven't tried Bhangra and you do enjoy Bollywood, try Bhangra's Punjab collection. You won't be disappointed.

I am a fan of Indian music, and this cd offered fun singalong songs. They are very catchy and pretty. All the songs are my personal favorites. This music is not the same, to me, as the music of Ravi Shankar and other more traditional Indian artists. These songs have more of a western structure, with the 4/4 beats and the verse/chorus pattern. I recommend this cd to anybody looking for the 'typical', romanticized Indian sound that they might have heard here in the West.

Everyone knows the best thing about Bollywood is the music. This is a fun collection across time of some popular songs. I like most of the older songs the best, but there are a couple of exceptions. This is a really broad selections that soungs best with the volume turned up. Feel free to sing along (um...its probably for the best that I don't speak hindi anyway).

Slavic Soul Party bills itself as the "No. 1 brass band for Balkan-soul-gypsy-funk." While the competition may be a bit thin in this niche genre, there is no argument about the validity of the tag. The band, made up of members of varying backgrounds from the U.S. and Japan, introduces the brash-but-intricate horn lines of the Balkans and adds some New Orleans grit and groove to the stew. On the Brooklyn-based group's third album, one can't help but marvel at the ensemble playing of knotty horn lines on tunes by leader Matt Moran (the percolating "Ruchenista!" stands out) or Slavic traditionals like the sadly romantic "Djelem Djelem," which features guest vocalist Eva Salina Primack. Those ready to party need look no further than the uproarious "Vrainje" or the title track. I never tire of it. Sure it's different, but that's one of the main reasons it's so great. Like most gypsy music, it's dark but peppy, sometimes frantic even. Mad fun. Highly recommended.

When I first heard about this on NPR, I immediately got a big grin. This is a fun, funky collection of tunes. I'm also a big fan of The Art of Noise, so take that into account. This isn't full of sound effects, just cool tunes with a fun beat.
