Immaculately prolific and blatantly ambitious, My Morning Jacket celebrate eight years as a recording band with what many refer to as a death knell: the double live album. Yet it takes but a single listen to declare that the brass neck and bravado pays off for this Kentucky band of longhairs, which released the 21-song epic as a companion piece to their concert DVD. Songwriter and singer Jim James's howling falsetto ricochets through MMJ's backlog of songs, which have been reenergized for the stage by the band's airtight live-show mettle. Dusting off remnants of the first two records like "I Think I'm Going to Hell" and the stunning "The Way That He Sings," then lining them up with the more contemporary "Gideon" and "What a Wonderful Man," MMJ never take their foot off the gas. In fact, rather than getting bogged down in concert-album fashion, Okonokos plays spanking new, almost re-studio recorded. And that means it works both ways: as the next volume in a series for those familiar with My Morning Jacket, or as a compendium primer for a band that never lets up and is always willing to circumvent the rules. --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
Great DVD/CD.......2007-08-05
I rented this on Netflix, hearing that it was good. I gotta tell ya, this is great stuff. Grant it, I've had eight beers and God knows what else but thats what this music is about. Let yourself go and love it. Parts of this remind me of Sigur Ros almost, which is incredible in my book. Ethereal. Heavenly. Inspired. 5 stars.
Excellent live recording.......2007-06-28
Best live MMJ recording I've heard. Double disk of songs spanning their last several albums and a few rare tracks. Excellent playing and clean soundboard recording. Fans won't be disappointed.
One of the worst albums I've ever heard.......2007-03-22
I'll preface my comments by saying I've never heard anything they've recorded before. Based on some positive reviews, I gave it a listen. What a mistake. It was boring from start to finish. I'm at a total loss to understand what the appeal of their "music" is. There's nothing memorable about any of it (well that's not exactly true - I did hear the "Hawaii Five-O" theme recurring through one track ["Off The Record"]). I yawned several times while suffering TWO discs of this; I waited in vain for SOMETHING to like about this, but it was all for naught. I haven't been this bored by a live set since I caught Elbow several years ago in person.
a live holy grail of a recording........2007-02-19
i am not keeping a cool head on this, i know. perhaps i need smelling salts. but after only two listens to this recording i am ready to declare it one of the greatest live rock and roll albums in my universe. i am 45, pushing 46 fast; no overly impressionable starry-eyed youngster. hard to hold back the superlatives on this, though. this great band displays a wide array of moods and emotions here, with passionate singing and outstanding songcraft, but it is the guitar playing that really puts this thing over the top. nuanced guitarwork, achingly lyrical guitarwork, and blistering guitar fireworks abound throughout the two discs that make up this masterpiece. if you have any of this groups fine studio recordings, this is as good as anything you could expect live, and you should acquire a copy as soon as possible. if you have never heard this band at all, this is a perfect place to experience their sound for the first time. i can't wait to see the dvd of this concert. classic stuff.

okay.......2007-01-05
I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.
A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17
Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.
Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.
Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22
Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!
Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02
I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.
Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.
Highly recommended.
First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20
I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

Two years and a pair of band members have passed since My Morning Jacket's last album, and the respite seems to have reinvented the Louisville, Ky., band and its leader Jim James. Shelved are the boogie-soaked country and hard-stomping metal of the first three records--assuring that all links to Lynyrd Skynyrd are hereby obsolete--and the sleek maturation of James's wailing, echoing falsetto may have even nullified the Neil Young comparisons. Using the guitar as a complement more than as a weapon, songwriter James has simplified the sound where keyboards take the lead and choruses play like a '70s AM radio. While songs like "Anytime" and "What a Wonderful Man" channel the old MMJ sound, they do so with less chaos and more spontaneity. That's the trend for the record's best: "Wordless Chorus" and its infectious "aaaah" refrain, the Hawaii Five-O-riffed ska of "Off the Record" and a Stranglers-minded carnival waltz, "Into the Woods." Serving as a pop-music paradigm that change is good, Z is ambitious, groundbreaking and downright impeccable. --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
I'm just not feeling it.......2007-08-03
Directed to this band after tasting some eclectic mixes of new folk, rock and jazz influences that also include some punk and post metal. With Z I like the songwriting but the singer just doesn't cut it, often droning on and then OUT and sounding sometimes like he is out of breath.
Does this guy smoke or something? A nice radiance within some songs but at times this is nothing more than a jam band that tries so hard to separate themselves from the other of their kind that they end up sounding like a cousin anyway.
Long Live Rock (Rock Ain't Dead!).......2007-06-30
My Morning Jacket provides proof positive that Rock and Roll is still alive and kicking. Not only are these songs catchy, but a few also add the wonderful rockin' jams that sets My Morning Jacket apart from other, lesser "hard rock" bands.
My favorites are What A Wonderful Man, Off the Record, and others whose names escape me. In fact, it's such a strong effort throughout that it's not necessary to pick out a few as "the best." It's the opposite of that horribly upsetting feeling of buying an album, only to find that one hit you love, followed by 9 fillers of crap.
What I do notice on this album is a sort of homage to The Who. In fact, when I first heard Off the Record, I honestly thought that this was something new by said band. It even sounds like I'd guess Roger (Daltrey) would sound by now. And then there's that sorta Hawaii Five-O sample thrown in; why, I don't know, but it somehow works.
Buy this album. It's great. It's really just that simple. I used to be a Deadhead way back when, and I think this is one of the only bands that I feel can jam like The Dead (no, I don't think they sound alike, too). The only others that i feel can accomplish this feat are/were Blues Traveler, a smidgin of Phish, and maybe Built to Spill.
Again, I'm just so happy to be able to say, "Hey, rock's stil alive. And it DOESN'T suck!" Buy and enjoy.
My Morning Jacket Sucks . . . Not.......2007-05-14
The 2005, year-in-review indie lists touted one of two albums as the best of the year. 2004's hands down
winner was The Arcade Fire's Funeral, and the indie folks are still talking about them, even after a less
than pleasing follow-up. For 2005, My Morning Jacket's Z, and I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by Bright Eyes
were at the top of many lists for trendy music sifters and reviewers. I first listened to the latter, and
was somewhat dissappointed at my first taste of the indie movement. I then listened to Funeral by Arcade Fire
to see what last years winner was like. Very impressive. So I decided to give My Morning Jacket a try.
Placed it on hold at the library, and listened to it once, and didn't think much about it. I kind of lost
track of the indie music scene till my friend Sir Erik the Independent ackwardly approached me at a party
and we had the most uncomfortable 15-minute conversation the world had seen in 3 decades. But he asked me
about indie music, I made up something smart to say about Bright Eyes, and he kind of smirked (he does this
a lot, especially when he's in his I'm-right-and-no-one-else-is-smart-enough-to-realize-it mood) and mentioned
about half a dozen bands that I'd never heard of. The Mountian Goats are actually a band, I've now realized,
thanks to Erik. And check this out, it's good songwriting, according to Erik.
So Erik, being the indie music snob that he is, told me to check out It Still Moves by My Morning Jacket
after I said that I was currently digging Z by My Morning Jacket. How come it's always the old and obscure
for this indie music Indiana Joneses that blow an obscure and intelligent load everytime they hear something
that they're quite sure no one else has truly "discovered" only to move on to near-oblivion roots music once
someone figures out and ultimately corrupts the pure and sweet musical masterpiece they once held so dear? Just
asking.
Erik the Independent and Much Better When It's Older Mike both really think that It Still Moves is the greatest
MMJ jacket album, and prefer just to ignore the indie-approval of Z just two years earlier. The songs on Z are
diverse and Jim James voice is quite relaxing and shapeless. Once you've finished Z, you realize that, as much
as 4 minute musical tags at the end of their songs aren't required, and that MMJ's vocal arrangements have a
much more interesting payoff than their straight instrumentation with guitar jams and horns. Not to knock their
previous album at all, but to say they have matured their arranging. The last track has a 2 minute tag on the
end, reminiscent of It Still Moves, but Z is definitely a nice footprint on their musical journey. The opening
Wordless Chorus is a song full of drowsy hooks and the classic silo-voices of previous MMJ works. Jericho is
a faster paced number that builds on James' ability to hit the high notes strong. Into The Woods is a carnival-
esque number, with some odd imagery, but with a very nice melody to even it out. Dodante puts a nice smooth finish
on the album, and really makes you sad that there are only 10 tracks on this CD.
The overall star rating on Amazon for this album, at the time of writing, is low due to the short-lived copy-
right protection software, which has since gone the way of the buffalo. This CD is going for a great deal less
on the used Amazon sellers tabs. Spending 5 dollars on this album is a great investment.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT LET THE 1 STAR REVIEWS TURN YOU AWAY!!!!.......2007-04-06
The average rating here, as has been noted before, is pulled down by issues related to DRM/copyright problems with the disc -- not the music. Just repeating this fact again for those who put too much faith in others' reviews. Fortunately, most reviewers see the excellence at work on this album. Trust me, you gotta have this one. And you need to explore the back catalog and, of course, their live stuff. My new favorite band...

Larry the Cable Guy Morning Constitutions.......2007-08-05
My grandsons and I really like this CD, but we like all of his DVD'S and CD'S. He just keeps getting better. I like him because he is just down to earth and can make a story out of anything.
A Lesser Effort.......2007-06-12
I have long enjoyed "Larry's" lowbrow humor and, indeed, this collection is really no lower than previous efforts, but it was not as enjoyable. As with all of his work, there is a tendency towards bathroom humor and cracks aimed against the rural poor. Some of the cracks hit home but they do not do so this time around with as much fun. The collection is not mean spirited except, perhaps, against himself but it is not all that much fun either.
I will still by new material released by Larry but I hope future efforts are better.
great larry.......2007-06-06
Marriage must be making a difference to Larry the Cable Guy. The humour is still very clever and very funny and remarkably fresh. But it's not as blue as previous CDs. That makes it easier to play in a variety of situations which should increase Larry's fans.
For someone who acts so dumb Larry's humour is exceptionally clever. A good actor as well as a good comedian.
Now you have a goal: 5 stars.......2007-05-13
In so many ways Larry the Cable Guy's popularity stems from saying things we wish we had thought of. From observations on babies to relatives and everyday life, his perspective is hilarious. He is not politically correct so prepare to be offended, no matter how conservative you are. His perspective is not uncommon either (Sure, everybody hates rednecks until their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere)because I live in a rural area and we know he is the real thing.
Very Disappointing.......2007-05-12
Was eagerly anticipating something along the lines of his previous CDs, especially the "Right to Bare Arms"--bright, original, lough-out-loud funny--but this effort was very disappointing. Sounded as though it was was hastily put together. Very few laughs. Lackluster. My recommendation is NOT to buy.

Album Description
Thee essential MMJ record. A voice that's both honey & charcoal, deep Southern gothic canvases with gracious acoustic and electric guitars, painterly strokes of harpsichord, harmonica, lap steel, drums swimming in the deepest, darkest, widest pools of reverb, dirigible harmonies that will have you weeping, incensed atmosphere so thick, it's absolutely biblical. '...there's an undercurrent of fatalist resignation that rolls over you like the late-afternoon summer sun' - CMJ. 'At Dawn could be the perfect soundtrack to a summer road trip, or just something you wrap around yourself on the way to work each morning. 14 tracks. Darla. 2001.
Customer Reviews:
Awful - a review from outside Kentucky.......2007-05-02
I listened to "At Dawn" after having listened to "Z," which is their latest release. Like "Z," their songs ramble a bit and they go into long, drawn-out solos - a "jam band" if you will. However this album is much more crude and there is way too much reverb. Call me "urbanized," but the production values are poor and there is a lack of hooks throughout the entire length of album. The album is so long that the CD stops playing near the end on my computer's CD player - "Strangulation!" gets strangulated, and I don't even hear the bonus track. "Honest Man" is the only standout on the album, a blues-driven rocker that is unlike any other song MMJ has done. The rest, well - I'm glad it's in the past.
Great, just great.......2006-07-11
I am now listening to this cd for the first time, and i have to say I love it!!! The music is mesmerizing, almost putting me into musical nirvana. I recommend it highly, as highly as I have ever recommended any cd!!!
Greatest album, maybe not even from this planet........2006-07-07
If you read my title, it sounds like I may be strange or just looking to be goofy, but after I saw My Morning jacket this year at Bonnaroo, I'm not totally convinced that Jim James and the rest of the crew is entirely human. The sound of Jim James and the dynamic sound of the band in full is beyond anything that should ever be possible from a mear mortal human being. The album, AT DAWN, has been one of my favorite five albums of all time for well over a year now, but it's an album that may possibly grow on a person for years, or maybe lifetimes, or maybe even reincarnated lives, etc. It hits the soul in ways I didn't think possible. I really don't think (aside from MMJ themselves) that any album will ever be made again that reaches this deeply into the human spiritual core. This album leaves me trembling and feeling reborn after every listen. I was late getting into My Morning Jacket, and now I can't stop thinking about them and it's almost odd how integrated their music is with my life. Appropriately enough, they have possibly the most fitting song in the history of life to describe how I feel about Jim James and the way the music makes me feel. To take an exact quote from the song "The Way That He Sings":
"Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
It's just the way that he sings,
not the words that he says, or the band.
Im in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand."
Those lines are the most appropriate lines I have ever heard. Because it's the way I feel every time I hear every part of that song, and of the album. Of course, I do love the lyrics and the band, etc, but there is something in the way that he sings that blows my mind to bits. Every song on this album is so beautiful and hypnotic that it could arguably stand out on any other album in music history. Please give this album many chances, and realize that it may take several listens before you even can get to the next level of the greatness of this album. I heard it almost four or five times, casually, before it started to hit me, and then one day, I immediately named it one of my favorite five albums; now it's my number one without any doubts. Only this band could top the effort of At Dawn. I really can't say any more about this album other than that it is just simply the most beautiful thing I have ever encountered in my life. This album is special, and the band is as much. I've only seen them twice, but please see them after you get familiar with at least a couple of their albums, and I promise you will come back home and play their albums more religiously than a priest reads a verse before mass.
The perfect transition to "It Still Moves".......2006-06-27
My Morning Jacket has rapidly evolved over its 4 albums, and the evolution is fascinating to follow. Its 1999 debut album "Tennessee Fire" was a journey into Americana, almost entirely based on dreamy, accoustic songs.
The band's second album "At Dawn" (14 tracks, 74 min.), issued in 2001, eloaborates on the themes explored in "Tennessee Fire" in many songs such as the title track, "Lowdown" and others. But the band expands its sound greatly, introducing the electric guitar on the brooding "Honest Man", an all-out rocker on "Strangulation" and even a slight reggae sound on "Phone Went West", forshadowing the "Off the Record" song on last year's "Z" album. In retrospect, this album is the perfectly logical middle link between "Tennessee Fire" and its next album "It Still Moves", and a great album at that, albeit somewhat overlong at 74 min. Nevertheless, it's a must for any MMJ fan and it certainly won't disappoint the casual fan or any fan of great music.
My Morning Jacket continues to ascend the ranks in the music biz. It builds its reputation not just with great album after gret album, but with amazing live shows. When I saw the band most recently, at Bonnaroo earlier this month, it put on an epic, monstrous really, 3 hour set that started at midnight. It brought the house down with its tireless energy and great song selection (both originals and covers). MMJ will be heard of for many years to come, no question.
Love MMJ.......2006-04-21
Well, I love My Morning Jacket. From the first time I discovered them, about four months ago on iTunes, I have been hooked. I mean it's just something about the sound and the lead singers voice- it's magical. I'm a big Neil Young and Bob Dylan fan and this takes me to a updated version of that form. They are touring with Pearl Jam, so if you haven't heard of them many people will soon. I don't think the new material from the album Z is all that good, but At Dawn is excellent. Some favorite tracks are Hopefully, The Way That He Sings, Bermuda Highway and At Dawn. Do yourself a HUGE favor if you like slower rock songs with a psycadelic (spelling?) feel then you will love this band.

A veteran of long years on the Boston club scene and a stint as sideman to former J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf, guitarist Johnny A. originally self-released this masterful, tasteful solo record to much local acclaim, and then guitar ace Steve Vai added the musician to the roster of his label. Proving that the term "guitar god" has too often been misapplied in the post-Van Halen era of diddly-squeak school of soloing, Johnny A. draws on a more classic pantheon of American fret deity for inspiration, including Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, James Burton, Nokie Edwards, and Wes Montgomery. And like the late Danny Gatton (whom the musician's fiery solos recall), Johnny's years as a sideman have taught him the importance of space and dynamics. The smoky, moody title track sets the tone. While his choice of covers (the Beatles' "Yes It Is," Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman," and the Ventures' signature "Walk, Don't Run") underscore his restraint, the guitarist proves his overdrive can burn with the best of them on "Two Wheel Horse," "In the Wind," and the rockabilly kicker "Up in the Attic." --Jerry McCulley

Buy This CD.......2006-11-10
If you love to dance, if you love guitar, if you love witnessing (in this case audibly) a master craftsman practicing his craft then you need to own this music.
Johnny A, by his own admission, has had a long and tortuous love affair with his guitar; and like any long-term affair where each partner begins to assume characteristics and traits of the other, Johnny A has melded himself with his guitar to the extent that it has become an extension of his body, his soul, his mind. He has become one with his music. This man can flat out play guitar.
I can't listen to this CD without dancing...I have to move, it's that evocative. And it is sooooooo smooth and sweet, like ear candy or soul candy. Definitely my favorite CD, still, after a year and a half. If you love good guitar and if you love to move and be moved, this CD is just what you need.
"holy Chet Atkins Batman!".......2006-07-05
I do not know if people that do not play the guitar understand the value and meaning of tone; but most guitar players lack that one rare ability to achieve the perfect meld of guitar and melody through the right set up WITH originality and verve. Johnny A has been around for along time performing other artists songs, but wow!, he should not have spent so many years as a sideman. This CD will grab you from the first cut with haunting chord progression with that unique custom hollow body sound. You will be hooked right then and there. This CD will take you on a ride of classics,rock-a-billy,swing, blues and downright DIRTY rock and roll, Texas style. This is a must, buy it, give it, and you will never tire of it. If you do not love this CD, then give your stereo away and buy some books....You guitar players, listen and learn how the tone of your guitar and the phrasing you use can be magical..
Although He's a Relative Unknown, Johnny A's Album Has A Stellar Quality About It.......2006-01-08
Sometimes it's fun to be a fan of an obscure artist, but in this case there is absolutely no joy in it. Both of Johnny A's albums should be far more popular than they are.
I like to say that there are really only two kinds of music---Good music and BAD music. Johnny A's music is so damn good, it's truly a crime that more people don't know about it. Just listen to some of the horible dreck that gets played 24-7 on our American airwaves. No wonder we're in such sad shape!
Johnny A's music appeals to a wide variety of people. I've given at least ten of his albums to friends and every one of them has thanked me profusely.
Too many people are missing out on a delicious, sweetly smokin' guitar instrumental album that can be listened to repeatedly without a hint of boredom.
My good friend Kirk from Malibu turned me onto J.A. about two years ago---he truly gave me a gift that I will treasure for the rest of my life. It's really THAT good!
Fresh Sound Cool Vibe.......2005-08-16
Johnny A. has a cool style. Whatever song he plays he makes it his own. This gives his CD a very cool unified vibe with an edge which is uniquely Johnny A. Goofy photo in the CD liner, though.
Keep an eye on this man!.......2005-07-27
Johnny A is truly a rising star. I saw him live "by accident" and was very happy that I was introduced to his music. He is still relatively unknown, unfortunately. He seems to be quite popular in Boston, where he is originally from, but even here in NJ, I haven't heard his music played on the radio yet. He deserves more than this. There is way too much crappy music around that's polluting our radios which almost makes it a crime not to give this guy the sort of fame he deserves for his work. The fact that you have over 40 reviews of his CD and most of them give 5 stars certainly says something for how solid, original, creative, and high-quality his music is. Truly a work of art. He stands right up there with many guitar greats like SRV, BB King, Albert King, Eric Clapton, and others. However, in contrast to these guys, Johnny's CDs are all instrumentals, and the fact that he is able to capture the sort of attention and admiration that he does with guitar instumental work is both noteworthy and testament to his talent and creativity as both a songwriter and a guitar player. His style is extremely diverse, and I was amazed at how many different tones of sounds he was able to extract from one custom-made Johnny A signature Gibson guitar. I mean, wow. After listening to this CD and his other new CD, try to see him live, and you will not be sorry. Johnny is simply a gem, and I really hope his career flourishes to the sort of fame and wide recognition he deserves.

Not so great!.......2007-05-12
I really wanted this cd because I love the song "Golden," and I thought at the rest of the album must be at least passable. So it was surprising to hear how bad the rest of the songs are, mostly due to the gimmicky "echo chamber" sound to all of them. "Golden" is so different from the rest that it seems like it was done by another band altogether. A big disappointment! Sorry, but that's my opinion. . .
How a rock and roll record should be!!!.......2007-04-04
this is a rock and roll album that is a classic. i really can't say much more. the disc plays long, over 70 minutes. i love every song, and i play this cd very often, almost once a day...still.
this is a must have, and a no-brainer!!
can't get enough of this band........2007-02-11
reverb drenched guitar, a big sound worthy of neil young's crazy horse band, i can't get enough of these guys. if you haven't heard them, you need to. as fast as you can. a rock band with melodies and riffs and a haunting sound, this is a great album.
Worth every second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-12
This album is the type album where you like it or not. Personally I think this album is better than Z. But anyway, here's the spoop:
Mahgeetah- 4 and a quarter stars- This song isn't the best opener, but it passes.
Dancefloors- 4 and a quarter stars- This one is similar to Mahgeetah but different in many ways. (Think about it, it makes since.)
Golden- 5 stars- This song is probably one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Ya gotta love it.
Masterplan- 4 and 3 quarter stars- Close, but not as good. Don't get me wrong. You'll wanna here it.
One Big Holiday- 4 anda half stars- This song is a good rocker. And it has the best name.
I will sing you song- 4 and a half stars- This is the long one, about 9 minutes. But it's worth every second.
Easy Morning Rebel- 4 stars- It's a good one. The short beat at the begining of the song with the horns is great mon!
Run Thru- 4 stars- Great guitar and stuffffffffssssssssss!!!??..
Rollin Back- 3 and a half stars- Bit of a disappointment here. Sorry My Morning Jacket.
Just One Thing- 5 stars- Now that's better. Short but Awesome!
Steam Engine- 5 stars- Even better than just one thing! YYAAAYYY!!!!!!
One in the Same- 5 stars- Worse than steam engine but better than just one thing. It's a beautiful song.
That's what I think. And if ya don't agree, too bad cuz i'm keepin my opinions. Peace out, MMJ!!!????....
Tight but loose.......2006-07-16
Not everyone will like this album...but then again, how many albums have universal appeal? If you like meandering bluesy twang guitar jams, you'll probably like this. If you like concise, aggressive rock songs, you probably won't like this. There, now you can stop reading and decide whether you want to buy this or not.
Okay, it's not that simple, but it's close. It's easy to like tracks like "Golden" and "Mahgeetah" because they're pretty dang catchy and are a bit more focused than most of the other songs (actually, the end of "Mahgeetah" is a pretty awesome jam session). Most of the other songs won't quite jump out at you, but have a unique appeal that I haven't really heard in any other rock bands - the songs may carry on too long and not really go anywhere, but who cares? It's fun to listen to them just jam on as if they were sitting on a porch on a warm summer evening, which is where some of the "live show" comparisons come into play. Speaking of which, I saw them at Coachella this year and they were positively amazing. I was with two people who had never heard of MMJ and they were absolutely blown away, their set was truly electric.
A perfect way to introduce yourself to this CD is to listen to it on a long drive. The relaxed arrangements just seem to make the time pass effortlessly and reduce a lot of the stress of sitting in your car for an extended period of time. Then again, I'm listening to it right now while getting ready to go for a night on the town. With a slightly shorter running time this album could have been a true classic, but as is it will have to settle for being a great album.

Carrington's got an ugly, agitated view of the world. That's the exact reason why some people like the comic and others don't. In the CD's opening minutes the comedian proudly indulges in some nasty ethnic caricature, but before long he settles into the raunchy redneck sex routines he's best known for. At times, Carrington's all-consuming horniness sounds more like a nagging Pavlovian itch than adult sexual yearning. The central figure in Rodney's world continues to be the male member and references to his favorite organ abound on Morning Wood. About half of the disc is taken up with the comic performing dirty ditties. The title track works the same turf as "Letter to My Penis," a song from Carrington's 1998 album, Hangin' with Rodney. This guy definitely has an obsession and he wants to share it with the world. --Fred Cisterna

There is no end to Rodney's talent and comedic abilities. Though not quite as strong as his first 2 CDs, Morning Wood is sure to entertain. Full of all new material, this CD is great for any fan of Rodney of someone who's looking to see what he is about. Also, check out his TV show, "Rodney."

By 1970, after his infamous motorcycle accident and a mess of an album called Self-Portrait, Dylan had lost his remarkable consistency, but not his talent. New Morning, a collection of songs that lacks the urgency of the singer's '60s material or the country cohesiveness of Nashville Skyline, is nonetheless rewarding in a laid-back way. Dylan, still affecting his low Johnny Cash imitation, sings strongly on the piano-heavy "Winterlude." "If Not For You and "Time Passes Slowly," which never became signature songs by any means, are two of his most underrated performances. Cocktail jazz piano and Martha Stewart's background scat-singing on "If Dogs Run Free" add to the album's experimental spirit. --Steve Knopper
Album Description
Out of print in the U.S.! 1970 return to form for Mr. Zimmerman after the disasterous Self Portrait. Features Bob backed by a stellar band including David Bromberg, Al Kooper and others. 12 tracks. Sony.
Customer Reviews:
I'm a bit perplexed.......2007-05-11
I see this has been re-released as, presumably, a British import. Unfortunately, all the reviews listed here are older and do not pertain to this particular release, so we don't know if it's been remastered and upgraded. The 1989 release that's been available all these years is pretty pathetic. It's got no teeth and sounds boxy. I've still got my old LP and had to resort to transferring that to CD to get a decent sounding version.
About the music itself: I reserve a 5 star rating for true masterpieces, and let me tell you, this is close. It's sorely overlooked in Dylan's catalog, probably because it had the misfortune to follow Self Portrait, which everyone proclaims to be a total abomination. I don't view SP that harshly, in fact, I think it's an interesting album. It certainly isn't what one expects from Dylan, and certainly not what was expected in 1970, but it's really not that much different from Nashville Skyline, except that it has a lot of cover versions (some of them really "interesting") and it doesn't follow the psuedo-country theme of NS.
New Morning was seen then as an attempt by Dylan to redeem himself after the debacle of SP, and that's probably pretty accurate. There's no doubt in my mind that it's his strongest work between John Wesley Harding and Blood On The Tracks. Dylan sounds assured, plays some really good piano, and covers a lot of ground, both musically and lyrically. Plus, he's got a great band; Al Kooper adds a lot of musicality to the proceedings, and he plays on every cut. The songs are short and to the point, and the lyrics may not match the creative poetry of his prime earlier period or the narrative depth of Blood On The Tracks, but they are penetrating and challenging. The high points are many. If Dogs Run Free has always been a favorite, with its jazz/beat poet feel, New Morning cooks with an optimistic spendor, and If Not For You is just a classic on the order of Lay Lady Lay. These are my personal favorites, but the whole album plays really well and ends really strong.
Maybe I should have given it 5 stars. If anyone reading this has purchased the import, please give us a review and let us know if there is a significant sonic upgrade!
And does anyone know why the rest of the catalog hasn't been remastered in the States? I'm assuming that when SACD didn't really catch hold, it messed up the project. SACD or no, the rest of Dylan's catalog deserves the upgrade. Those versions are pushing 20 old, and we all know how far digital remastering has come in all those years. I'm still waiting for the Beatles remasters, and those are now MORE than 20 years old.
Under the radar.......2007-01-01
This is a very different Dylan disc that for some, like myself, thought to be one his most innovative and better departures. The incorporation of piano and organ played by sixties sideman-stalwart Al Cooper and good old country boy Charlie Daniels on electric bass, the background gospel singers and cool jazz scat singing of Maeretha Stewart create a sound that was not your typical Dylan expectation than nor now. I recently bought a copy of this disc on sale to replace my LP, it takes you back to the day when it came out originally but more than that it demonstrates the diversity and depth of Dylan's work. There are a few country introspective songs that are so quaint that they almost come across as corny like "Sign on the Window" but the brilliance strips away any superficial outer layers to reveal simplicity that works. On the other hand "Winterlude" is just a little to quaint for my tastes. The song that has the most originality and hence my favorite is first and foremost the quirky "If Dogs Run Free" that begins with some piano runs and bluesy jazz guitar with Dylan's voice lowered an octave or two, not as sinewy but deeper and stronger coupled with the scat of Maeretha Stwart to create a song for the ages. A close second is "Father of Night" that features really cool background voices but unfortunatly is much too short coming in at only 1:29. "Three Angels" is sublime and at a whole different level; this is the type of song that is the essence of Dylan music. Other good songs include "Went To See The Gypsy and " If Not for You" that finds Dylan in more typical voice and accompanyment. This is one of those dics that can be played over and over again and you never seem to get tired of it but rather just continue singing along with Mr.Zimmerman. Add this to your Dylan collection it is pretty darn good.
a christian dylan.......2006-08-28
well,as the story goes, bob dylan was all fubar'd and got into a motorcycle accident.when he was being hurled through the air,the last thing he saw was a neon sign that read "jesus saves".he decided to throw together this album dedicated, mostly,to the christian god.theres 2 songs i play a lot on this one......."if not for you"-a cool love song where he rhymes words multiple times at an alarming rate.its so cool.the other is "winterlude",a sort of old timey, reminiscant, secret love song.the rest of the album is not bad those are just the 2 i always end up playing.it was the first bob dylan album that got less than 4 stars from me.
Good Dylan..........2006-08-07
This album came out on the heels of the tripe Self Portrait, so many critics lauded this one, because anything was better than Self Portrait. As time marched on, we revisit New Morning. It's a good album, not a great one. The title track and Day of the Locust are very good songs. The one masterpiece is Three Angels. It's a wonderful song, one of Dylan's best. So this is a nice album. Dylan went into exile for the next 3 years after this, releasing just a few singles...
SELF PORTRAIT Should Have Been This Good.......2006-07-15
I just purchased NEW MORNING and I quite like it. Although I have always been aware of him, of course, as a man in his fifies I am just now discovering the Bard of Minnesota's works in depth. Perhaps, had I been a huge fan in 1970, I would have as readily dismissed NEW MORNING as much I recently dismissed SELF PORTRAIT. Somehow, though, this album shines for me. To many people younger than I, if a artist jumps from one musical style to another on the same release, they deem such behavior "inconsistent." Back in the day (and I believe other greybeards will agree with me here) however, that was known as "eclectic" and simply illustrated that you (and your fellow musicians) knew the sources from whence American music sprang.
Here I feel Mr. Dylan shows his roots. If one reads his autobiography, I feel that music such as to be found on NEW MORNING will be more clearly understood.

Debut 1999 album from this band that hails from Louisville, Kentucky. My Morning Jacket are a five-piece alt-country rock outfit who practice in a grain silo on a 1,000 acre farm. 'This may be the most lonesome record I've heard this year, with the reverb making it sound like it was recorded in the dead of night at the back of a concrete drainage culvert, kudzu growing on the amps, major sevenths littering the ground like cigarette butts. These kids can harmonize, too, a talent that most alt-country bands are sadly lacking' - Pitchfork. 16 tracks. Darla.

Listen, Listen, Listen, Listen, Listen, until you feel it........2006-11-11
I was somewhat late into the world of My Morning Jacket unfortunately, and Tennessee Fire was the last album that I listened to from them. I started to fall in love with their other albums first and thought of Tennessee Fire as a decent first album, or a "good start," and when "Z" came out I loved that album as well. I finally started listening to Tennessee Fire a bit more while the other albums were gaining even more of my affection. It kept building, and building, and building, eventually "At Dawn" became the greatest thing I had ever heard, and "It Still Moves" and "Z" started to reveal their layers to me as well, and all this time, poor little "Tennessee Fire" sat there, lonely and cold, waiting for me to sit down with it and get to know it as deeply as their other albums, begging to me to give it the same shake I had given all of their other albums, trying to convince me it was more than just an okay first effort, but instead a beginning to the chain of the greatest and most soulfull music ever to be laid upon the once def ears of this world.
Finally, I felt sympathy, and after brief listens here and there, withouth my full attention, I lay there on my couch, with nothing but silence, and put on this album, with no distractions. Wait, wait, it's clicking, yes, yes, third track in and I'm starting to realize the power of "They Ran" finally, and "The Bear" strikes me even more than before. Every song now, clicking, sinking in; I'm getting it, "Nashville to Kentucky" means more to me now, I can feel the meaning, yes, "Evelyn Is Not Real" is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, on and on, I start to understand that the production ISN'T WEAK, it's calculated and intense and relevant to the style Jim James had invisioned for this haunting album. HIS VOCALS ARE EVERYWHERE, I'm not even high or tripping, and I feel like I'm freaking out by the intensity of the album; this album is arguably as powerful as anything they have done. By the latter parts of the album, there is no let-down at all. Possibly, the two or three most affecting songs are at the end; "By My Car, "Butch Cassidy," and "I Think I'm Going to Hell," and also the end track, which is instrumental, all are part of a cumulation that leaves you feeling emotional in so many levels, asking yourself how that was possible to capture on any type of recording device.
I listen to this album, among others from MMJ, and wonder to myself at times if it's even real; is anyone else hearing what I'm hearing? I want to SCREAM ALOUD to people, repeatedly, "CAN YOU HEAR THE SOUL THAT I HEAR?" If so, we should all be out on the streets screaming, howling, crying, hugging each other, revealing our newly found souls to the world, freeing our souls from the cage they have dwelled in, rejoicing in a celebratory victory dance while their music plays from the skies from a sound system echoing and drifting from galaxies far, far away.
3.5 stars..... The humble beginnings of My Morning Jacket.......2005-12-08
Louisville's My Morning Jacket have released what is, in my opinion, the best and most adventurous album of 2005, "Z". It is hard to believe how much MMJ has matured in just a span of 6 years.
"Tennessee Fire" (16 tracks, 57 min.) is the 1999 debut album of My Morning Jacket, and quite a trip, frankly. It brings mostly a very intimate, low-key sound, which works well if the mood strikes you right. Many of the tracks don't even feature drums, and are just bare and not very melodic. Sometimes it works (such as on "Nashville to Kentucky"), sometimes it doesn't. This is pretty much a "hit-and-miss" affair. Much has been made about the "low-fi" sound of the album, but that doesn't bother me nearly as much as the lenghth of the album. Cut about 3 or 4 of the weakest tracks from here, and we have a 4 star album. The last 'bonus' track is an interesting instrumental, just beautiful.
I have seen MMJ in concert a number of times in the last 2 years, and they have out-grown their humble beginnings, no question, in fact I would put MMJ as one of the top live bands out there these days. "Tennessee Fire" is a fine album in its own right, but MMJ has gone on to much better things ("It Still Moves Me" and "Z").
...in defense of the sound quality and everything that is sacred.......2005-07-02
Many reviews of this album rightfully confirm the unmistakable beauty of the songs themselves but come down pretty hard on the production value. I can understand the need to make such impossibly heartbreaking, devastating music more palatable and polished (and thus easier to appreciate), but I sensed that a few of these were coming at the album with a spreading, contagious contempt for what has become passé low-fi indie sound, which first of all does a great disservice to the legend behind "The Tennessee Fire"--namely, that Jim James and his crew recorded this entirely inside a grain silo. Secondly, bashing the production value seems to deny the art its medium, like looking at an ice sculpture and saying, "Well, what a stupid thing to make a sculpture out of." Lastly, what makes this "The Tennessee Fire" is the Kentucky grain silo sound studio, the garage band reverb, wailing, whiskey-soaked vocals, and all the echoes and scuffles and distracting dropped instruments that are all but an orchestra of lonely, desperate high school nights spent out in the middle of nowhere, playing cranked-up instruments on bad sound equipment. If you're going to take this into some lavish sound studio and erase what essentially makes this album so intimate, you might as well keep clicking until you reach the Billboard Top 20. You might just find that sterilized, studio uniformity you've been looking for. But if you want 15 incredible songs that all sound like perfect first takes with the ghosts of the four-track gods lurking in the cassette hiss, then you might want to think about lowering your quality standards a little bit, because this is a bad production at it's very best.
Beauuuutiful.......2005-04-30
What else can I say, this is one of my favorite albums of all time. Jim James can just flat out sing. And although I love all of MMJ's work, this one is the best. The Bear, Nashville to Kentucky and Old Sept Blues especially have special places in my soul. These songs and the whole album have been introduced to tons of my friends who all love it almost as much as I do. I am telling everyone to buy this CD you will not be dissappointed.
rough around the edges/soft and warm in the center.......2004-08-16
My morning jacket's first album's best quality are the songs. The recording is strange. Why strange? I can't figure out why this band would appear so lazy in the production of this brilliant work. Is there some kind of artistic quality of a subdued voice on one track and a loud and crystal one on another? No, it couldn't have been intentional. But still, the lack of production doesn't take much away from the songs. It could have been the album of the year if the production was better. The first three songs flow together as if it were produced by Steve Lilywhite. 'Heartbreakin Man' combines a killer surf guitar riff with a country verse - an odd combo but they pull it off seamlessly. 'They ran' is a lonely drunken daze - but its slow cadence and minimal instrumentation allows James talents as a singer to radiate. 'The bear' must have been recorded with the studio in one room and james singing in the hallway. This still doesn't take away from your enjoyment of the song. Nashville to Kentucky is another slow bluesy song. It takes patience to appreciate it but it has numerous qualities. 'Old September Blues' is one of the shining moments on this standout album. It's another kind of whiney song that reminds me of Thom Yorke of Radiohead for some reason. 'If all else fails' is probably my favorite on this album. It's an acoustic waltz with a banjo thrown in. The production on this one is quite good. They use nice reverb on harmonizing vocals at the chorus that adds to the aesthetic. 'Its about twilight' is a harder rocking electric acoustic combo that shows the immaturity of the band at the time. 'Evelyn is not real' is more on par with the rest. It's a solid country-pop song. 'War begun' is another nice slower acoustic song that could have been alot better if well you know...The rest of the album kind of drags along with highlights here and there. It could have definitely been shorter (over 70 minutes). Overall, this album's qualities clearly outweigh the production problems. And, in some cases, the band made great choices with the production and the results are very satisfying. I would recommend 'the tennesse fire' to almost anyone. However, those who bought 'it still moves' first should expect a much slower album. But, the great thing about this album is the songs - most, not all, are just as good as those found on 'it still moves.' Haven't heard of 'it still moves'? Buy it and feel pure pleasure reverberate through you.
