From Amazon.co.uk Review
Cherry Ghost--a.k.a vocalist/frontman Simon Aldred plus band--formed in Bolton in 2005, having taken their name from a favourite Wilco song. Following charismatic singles like "Mathematics," and the melancholic "People Help People," Cherry Ghost are now ready to unleash Thirst for Romance--an album Aldred has described as "Willie Nelson meets Walt Disney". What this curious description amounts to is an accomplished collection of warm, accessible songs that veer between alt country and indie rock, providing suitable frames for Aldred's sandpapery vocals and obscure lyricism. Cherry Ghost's influences seem fairly overt: you can hear wafts of Lambchop, Oasis, Badly Drawn Boy--and Willie Nelson--amongst the varied structures. The inaugural title track sets things off at a brisk canter, paving the way for a set that's diverse without breaking too much ground. The merry "4AM" is an obvious gem, as is the anthem-in-waiting "Mountain Bird"; these simple, affecting songs are contrasted by more ambitious material like "Roses", the string-laden "False Alarm" and the Beatles-style blues-rocker "Here Come the Romans." While Aldred isn't quite the poet he believes himself to be, he does produce some captivating lyrical images, and his band perform impeccably throughout. Not a hugely innovative album, but an engaging debut nonetheless. --Paul Sullivan

beauty, simplicity, and utility.......2001-09-12
Of this CD's twenty-eight tracks, eighteen are arrangements by Kevin Siegfried; the remaining ten are straightforward, unadorned performances of Shaker hymns, sung either by the choir in unison, or by a solo voice, as they would have been sung in Shaker services. Occasionally the choir stomps and claps, also as the Shakers would have done. The unison songs and Kevin's settings blend seamlessly together, since Kevin's music is very sensitive to the spirit of the original tunes. His harmonies have an open, rough-hewn quality to them, like early American furniture, sturdy and useful. The music carefully mirrors and supports the text, occasionally employing mixed meter to follow the natural cadences of speech. The settings are largely homophonic, like Lutheran chorales, rendering the text easily comprehensible. Kevin avoids unnecessary embellishments and repetitions, and each piece is a small, well-proportioned gem, averaging about two minutes in length. In the liner notes, Kevin writes of his desire to preserve the Shaker ideals of "beauty, simplicity, and utility" in his settings, and he has succeeded brilliantly; the music is unassuming, serene, and peaceful.
Words and Music Marry in Siegfried's Arrangements.......2001-06-27
This recording of Shaker Hymns arranged by composer Kevin Siegfried and sung by the very fine Tudor Choir of Seattle is magnificent for several reasons chief of which is the careful blending of text and music in the arrangements. The "gentle words" of these hymns come alive through Siegfried's thoughtful soundscapes, providing the right context for the message of these poignant and life affirming hymns. This is no small task and although the Tudor Choir sings beautifully throughout, it is the arranging that has really caught my ear on this cd; you'd be hard pressed to find a recording of choral works with a better marriage of text and music. Well worth your money, time, and ears.

Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.
Customer Reviews:
Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20
Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.
Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

Five stars well deserved.......2006-06-05
I met Randy Stonehill once, even though I don't remember it -- it's blurred, like my meeting of Russ Lee and Joy Williams (who my Uncle Dan was manager of for a short time) and Bob Carlisle, who I remember having a hilarious sense of humor. His songs remind me of when I was really little, and now it's like a comforting sound from my toddler years, to hear lyrics and music that I've come to remember as a symbol of a good time.
Hand of God -- Wonderful. Hands down wonderful.
Fire -- Mysterious, slow in a good way, and haunting. Also hands down wonderful.
Sleeping -- Slow but pretty good anyway.
Father of Lights -- Energetic and loud but missing something...still, a good song.
Angel's Wings -- A heartbreaking-in-a-good-way song that gives a good idea of Heaven.
Baby Hates Clowns -- Just hilarious.
Every Heartbeat is a Prayer -- One of the best songs on the album. Right from the heart.
Lonely House -- Quiet, slow, and sad. About an unhappy marriage.
Little Rose -- A touching and heartbreaking song with great lyrics and music. About a girl in Haiti who has joy and hope and unconditional love even through the misery and hopelessness of her poverty-stricken life.
Everything You Know (Is Incorrect) -- a decent song with pretty good lyrics.
Keeper of the Bear -- Absolutely hilarious and brilliantly conceived. It's obvious the guy's a total kid at heart.
I'm not thirsty after listening to this!.......2006-05-06
I don't normally listen to "Christian" music but I love Randy! He is a great songwriter, singer and artist. I first got into some of his earlier stuff like Turning 30, Rachel D., and Christmas at Denny's and then I wanted more. It's just a shame that you have to pay so much for each album. Enjoy.
WooHoo!!!.......2005-12-15
This rocks! It's one big noise feast. I even like the introduction with the black metal!!! Rock on!!! Randy Stonehill goes all out crazy on this one!!! Rock On!!!!
Randy's lyrics direct from God's word........2004-12-28
Shining down from the Father of lights is one song everyone must hear. Not just for the words which honor the LORD but for the music. Also the first track song regarding seeing God's hand is excellent. Don't let another day go by without listening to this song or buying this CD.

Thirst Quencher just makes you want more.......2001-04-16
This is the first of Ho'okena's albums. Ho'okena means thirst quenching in Hawaiian. Definitely award winning performances. If you like the Brothers Cazimero, but think they are a little slow, or like the sounds of their own voices a bit too much, try Ho'okena. I find it always picks me up to listen to it. The liner has wonderful translations. Napo'ona Mahina is my favorite. It tells of the sadness of watching the moonset into the sea off Ka'ena on 'Ohau's north shore. And the Kaimuki Hula is a classic.
If you like this album, go for Na Kai 'Ewalu, Ho'okamaha'o, Ho'okena 5 and then, for Christmas, their Home for the Holidays.

Fabulous American Church Music.......2001-10-25
Amy Beach had a fine touch with sacred music, as heard here. 'Jesus, My Savior' is a beautiful piano/voice duet that should be in every church soloist's repertory. Her 'Service in A' rates serious consideration as one of the finest American oratorio-sized works from the 20th century, eclipsed only by Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms' and Lauridsen's 'Lux Aeterna'.
Mr. Strimple's anthems 'Two from Isaiah' and 'Let This Mind Be In You' are exquisite examples of this art. Brilliantly voiced and solidly musical, they stand with some of the finer English anthems of the early 20th century in texture and concept.

best live band I have ever seen.......2006-08-01
Citizen Fish on the tour for this album is one of the best live bands I have ever seen. They were tighter than a drum and conjured monster waves of energy I can still recall over 10 years later. They just BURNED up the club like it was the last night of their lives.
The band's albums are decent too, though I sold off all their early ones. MM and Thirst being CF's best IMO. If they tour near you just GO.
ex-subhumans best.......2003-01-09
This is THE standout album from the best ska/punk band around these days. As always, the lyrics are hyper-intelligent, socially conscious rants that provoke real thought but never become preachy. Dick has never sounded better and the music reaches new levels of precision for this veteran band. Honestly, I've worn out my disk player with this album. It's easily one of the best ska/punk efforts ever released. Just buy it!
I love this album.......2000-03-18
It's ska and it's British. What else to say? It's fast paced and lively, and I like it a lot.
