There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.

Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

Underestimated in Europe. His concert on 21 May 2007 in Amsterdam was superb!

5 out of 5 stars Oh my Gosh, Josh!.......2007-07-03

I love Josh Groban's music! It is romantic, mellow and beautiful :)
This CD has two songs on it that are very unusual. I believe both are from Cirque de Soleil, and draw you into the music--warning-- While driving, do not close your eyes!

Album Description

The soundtrack of the show KÀ is the most ambitious musical project produced by Cirque du Soleil to date. While remaining firmly rooted in Cirque du Soleil musical tradition, the recording features a symphony orchestra and a 40-member choir, as such creating a unique musical universe both epic and lyrical.

The powerful percussion and distinctive sound invites comparisons with classic movie soundtracks creating "a rich soundtrack that lives up to the overarching eye-candy on display", says Variety. To create this sound, KÀ was recorded at the renowned Paramount Studios in Los Angeles and in Montreal, where Cirque du Soleil is based. Hollywood veteran Simon Leclerc, the conductor for Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise and the play Les Misérables, conducted the orchestra in Los Angeles.

Composer René Dupéré has been part of Cirque du Soleil since the very beginning. KÀ is the first work Dupéré has composed for Cirque du Soleil since 1994's Alegría, the best-selling Cirque du Soleil recording to date. "We pulled out all the stops in the making of this album, and the result is, I believe, a record of the highest quality," says Dupéré. The album KÀ is worthy of the show that Time magazine called "bigger than Vegas."

Both the stage production and the soundtrack called for highly innovative use of musical technology. Says Martin Lord-Ferguson, co-producer of the recording: "Technological innovation, artistic audacity and technical prowess are all features of KÀ that the soundtrack had to reflect."

5 out of 5 stars Sounds A Bit Like M E H D I.......2007-07-28

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N I G MA or even Loreena Mckinnetts Previous works. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Dralion , but still very unique. This is music to the soul.

Only by listening to the CD, I'm already captivated.
Can't wait for the chance to go Vegas to attend the show....!!

5 out of 5 stars Ka- Fabulous!!.......2007-05-07

Cirque du Soleil's Ka is a beautiful acrobatic show. I so much loved this show, that I wanted the music. And the score doesnot let one down. From it's wonderful rhythmic songs to it's bombastic tones. I thoroughly give it my highest recomendation.

4 out of 5 stars Strong and refresh music.......2007-04-12

I own several Cirque Du Soleil's CDs, this comes to my 2nd favorite. My all time favor of Cirque Du Soleil is Varekai because of its story line, the composition of the music, needless to say, the Fire Within on Bravo TV.
KA is good as well, but I just don't like that last few pieces, specifically, my ears just don't do well with that female singer's voice. Nothing against her personally, just don't feel right to hear her voice.
The choir is great, music is great, if you can listen with good sound system, you should be able to feel the battle field.
It has the 5-star potential if they have different female singer.

5 out of 5 stars Made me a true Cirque fan.......2007-04-01

My husband and I have always enjoyed watching Cirque du soleil on TV, but when we saw KA while on our honeymoon in Las Vegas, we were hooked and saw another show before we left that week. We purchased this album after we found ourselves humming it as we walked down the strip. Now we listen to it whenever we want to remember our honeymoon! Brilliant music that still gives me chills.

5 out of 5 stars If you love beautiful voices..........2007-04-30

and passionate singing, you won't be disappointed. While Corelli certainly had his flaws, they are minor in the larger picture of this unique, magnificent force of nature. Then get this set for your friend who thinks Andrea Bocelli is a great tenor.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know Corelli's art, this is the right CD.......2007-03-10

Franco Corelli had one of the powerful tenor voices of the twentieth century. Think Mario del Monaco with more beauty and grace; think Richard Tucker with a smoother voice. He had annoying touches in his singing, such as those "catches" here and there. But, with Tucker, he is, in my estimation, one of the two most powerful and attention riveting tenors in the past century. Other tenors were more artistic, provided better characterization (think Domingo, Gigli, Pavarotti, Gedda, Caruso, and some others).

But Corelli was a wonder of nature! Some samples: "Ah si, ben mio. . .Di quella pira." If there were an aria made for Corelli, this would be it. His big, rich, powerful voice fits this cut nicely. Not much subtlety here. In "Di quella pira," he hits the high notes in a stentorian manner. There are those mannerisms, but they are so easily forgiven, taking into account that rich, lustrous voice.

"Celeste Aida" is another representative cut. This is a powerful version. Also, note how he goes from forte to piano at the end of this aria. A powerful effect indeed.

Then, there are the twin arias from "Tosca." In "Recondita armonia," his rich voice is well manifest. He exhibits a smooth line in his singing. This is a powerful version of this well known aria. "E lucevan le stele" displays again that rich voice. At one point, he goes from forte to piano in a mesmerizing manner (Who'd have thought it?). His final "la vita" grabs one's attention.

Finally, "Nessun dorma." Well, smoothly, and powerfully sung. The final "vincero" is powerfully rendered, leaving goose bumps on the spine.

This is the very best of Franco Corelli. Those who want to get a sense of the vocal prowess of one of the most powerful tenors of the 20th century should attend to this double CD set.

5 out of 5 stars excellent gift.......2007-02-09

I gave it to my father and he says Its an amazing cd.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Tenor of This Century!.......2007-02-03

Franco Corelli is the greatest tenor of this century. Although there are many fine tenors including Carlo Bergonzi - no tenor comes close to singing with the pure heart and animal magnetism of Franco Corelli. Surprisingly, he was also quite comfortable with bel canto, listen to the incredible "A te o'cara". I've heard "Nessun Dorma" sung by many excellent tenors and hands down, none can touch the sublime beauty of Corelli's version. This 2cd set of his greatest arias is a wonderful gift for any opera fan. "Recondita Armonia" is my personal favorite. His thrilling vocal beauty and intensity of performance is truly unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Ah... Franco :}.......2007-01-10

Such a pleasing voice. I can't believe the clarity and perfection. He was well before my time and others have become more 'popular' since then, but for some reason his voice seems better than the more current singers. I do not know much about opera so I will have to rely only on my own ears. I happily recommend this double album. I like to have it playing on the 5 CD changer with other opera cds, mixing through them...it is a perfect saturday morning accompaniment. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply unreal.......2007-05-16

I find it utterly, amazingly, unthinkable that ANYone can come up with ONE 'negative' thing to say about this collection by the inimitable Ms Streisand. This CD..this music --- just transports me....elevates me...changes my mood and outlook......it is an ethereal listening experience..almost religiously hypnotic in its beauty, eloquence, and simplistic beauty. Some of the songs bring a lump to my throat. It's a joy and a privilege to hear this Artist render her vocal and emotional interpretation of these classic aural wonders.........a true gift to the ears. Bravo. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars/ Lisa Guerci in CT

4 out of 5 stars a brave journey.......2007-05-14

to record this set of songs was a huge risk for barbra streisand to take. but what other singer would put themselves on the line like this and record a whole album of classical material except barbra streisand?

dusty springfield had a song or two that borrowed melodies from the classical music genre, and aretha franklin famously growled her way through 'nessun dorma' at the grammys back in 1999. but this is very different and bold.
and no one, not even those with the vocals chops and training like linda ronstadt wouldn't take this one on for size.

it is easy to hear that streisand has put all her stylistic trademarks on hold and performed her recital with integrity. and at times, a different streisand emerges and it's quite nice. it's only a phrase here and a note there but it's interesting to hear.

be warned--she still sounds like barbra streisand. and there's one song i personally wish she hadn't sang (the canteloube), only because there's another song in that canon that might have served her even better called 'la dellaisado'.

2 out of 5 stars A for effort, C for execution.......2006-08-23

One does have to applaud Barbra for the effort, for showing that she really does care about music, not just her own. Everyone knows about her forays into pop, rock and even disco. Alas, while her voice is lovely, it seems more like an album of lullabies than classical lieder. She actually did a more authentic classical performance of a Schubert song on her TV special "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments." Alas, this serious effort never comes close to showing the range of her voice that she played with in that 2 1/2 minute song. A missed opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars BARBRA,BARBRA,BARBRA!.......2006-03-04

This CD shows why Streisand is who she is; the ultimate DIVA! This lady can sing anything and on this wonderful collection she proves it. Barbra recored the album way back in 1973, and because the record label was afraid of low sales due to the classical nature of the material, didn't release it until 1976. What a treat for fans of Barbra and fans of classical music. Barbra showcases hew vocal strengths in the 10 tracks singing in different languages. I first heard this CD at a dinner party 15 years ago and pretty much forgot about it until I saw a few for sale on Ebay. I remembered loving it and immediately bought it through Amazon. I highly recommend this CD for all those people who simply love music. It will put you in a very relaxed mood, almost as if your home is filled with candles. Since I bought it I've listened to it at least 20 times or more and will continue playing it in my home. Don't worry if you can't understand what Barbra is saying if you don't comprehend the laguage of the song; you'll know it's still Barbra doing what she does the best. A few final notes ; Barbra Streisand was nominated for a Grammy for the album. And Streisand has personally stated that this was the hardest album vocally she has ever worked on in her career. In short a beautiful CD for any home.

5 out of 5 stars A promise fulfilled.......2006-02-02

In 1963, when Streisand released her first album, there was no doubt she was a unique and talented singer. Some ten years later, after becoming a great success, she proved with "Classical Barbra" what a nurtured and developed talent is capable of. She didn't sit on her laurels and continue to churn out Broadway warhorses in an attempt to play it safe. Instead, like a true artist, she challenged her abilities. Her reward, and ours as well, is this absolutely gorgeous CD. Her voice, at a level of near perfection, glides effortlessly across each tender note of these well picked gems. If anyone ever doubted man's reason for existence, please, do yourself a favor and buy this CD. You will be inspired for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Musique de la Grece Antique: Sherri's Opinion.......2007-04-11

This music is almost like hearing ghosts. In a way the listener does hear ghosts, for the music has been saved from oblivion, and experts do not know everything about it. As much as possible, traditional instruments have been reconstructed based on pictures found on documents like vases and paintings. Sometimes you hear only a little fragment of something, about a minute. It's intriguing to think about who may have sung/played this music. The notes explain some of the technical details; musicologists will find that interesting. Because I know little about music, I wish for better notes about other things. For example, I would like more information in English about provenance, titles, and lyrics--as far as they are known. I wanted to know the words I heard sung. Other than the shortage of helpful notes, this is very interesting music.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty can survive destructive time.......2006-04-27

The first remark concerns the instruments of this music, instruments that have been reconstituted on the model of the ancient ones. We will consider them as germanely faithful, and they create sounds, a sound environment or ambience that is particularly original. The second remark is that this music is based on the pythagorian five-note scale that corresponds to the first five degrees of our modern major scale. Then a second group of these five degrees and intervals are added to the first five in a second identical group constituting a ten-note scale that will be the basis of all western music up to the Renaissance, and thus the basis of all Christian sacred music of the Middle Ages, a music known as gregorian. So, in this surprising sound ambience we also recognize some elements we have already heard and enjoyed in our heritage. Just take track # 3, ? Premier hymne delphique ? Apollon ?. Some of the chords are so close to gregorian music, and yet the instruments are so different, that we may think we are at the crossroads between some extraterrestrial music and gregorian chanting. In fact we are here at the very source of gregorian music that was to borrow everything from ancient Greek music. And then put this track # 3 in parallel with track # 16, ? Hymne chr?tienne (sic) d'Oxyrhynchus ? and you will hear the direct filiation. Track # 8 will provide you with the model of the traditional musics we find in the mountainous areas of the Mediterranean, Sicilia, Sardinia, Corsicca and Provence, among others, the music of shepherds and fishermen when coming back to land, a music that will become religious and christian later on and that still exists, mainly in the form of a polyphony. But the worst part - and also the best in a way - is that we only have fragments, tidbits, and that it is the concrete realization of the tremendous waste history has willed us and yet also the concrete evidence that history is never able to destroy something completely and that we have the means to reconstruct what has been destroyed with a specific procedure of genetic musical archaeology. To conclude we must take into account this recording is from 1978, i.e. a long time ago. To get a more complete vision we have to look for more recent recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting........2003-12-29

I was expecting something a little more vigorous. But it is still fun. In a sober way.

4 out of 5 stars A collector's item for any music lover.......2003-12-26

Pretty much everything that I can think of to say about this CD has already been said here.

I agree that it is a bit weird. I don't listen to it very often either.

But having said that my tastes in music are not so much driven by intellect, so it doesn't bother me that liner notes might not be as complete as they could be.

I bought this CD in Japan back in the mid-1980's when compact discs were still an upcoming trend and LP's dominated. It's believable but still somehow amazing that I paid the equivalent of more than thirty U.S. bucks for what is now practically a steal.

I also am wondering why the quality of this old disc is deterioriating. Yes! There are scratchy sounds abounding where studied silence was once 'heard.' Consequently, I listen even less than I would otherwise. (I had considered putting it on an MD with the soundtrack to 'Gladiator' and then listening to both on the 'shuffle' mode.)

5 out of 5 stars Unique Find.......2002-09-11

I loved this cd. It has a professional feel to the music. It evokes images from the period that are distinct, useful, and complimentary to examination of the time. There seems to have been a real effort at authentication of the sounds of the era without over stepping the claims of its ultimate veracity. I was delighted and surprised at its very existence.

My only complaint would be that I was left wanting more. Knowledge of the exact origins and history of each piece would be useful.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty, Passion and Madness.......2007-03-22

This CD is a bacchanalia. It is ecstatic and blissful and alien and sad and insane. There are so many worlds contained in this music that it's hard to describe. I have to say I've loved this CD for more than a decade and it has been a source of constant agony and joy and ecstasy. It doesn't age. It is a classic. There are so many nuances in it, so much fantasy, madness, passion and creativity that it is truly one of a kind. Each song produces a peculiar state of mind. I don't know how else to describe this experience. I'd say my favorite experiences are Mirki, Vai Vedrai, Querer (awesome!) and Valsapena. Please buy it and take the time to listen ... REALLY listen to it and experience it.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Journey To A World Of Joy And Wonder.......2005-07-09

Alegria means happiness in Spanish, and that't exactly what this CD delivers, a good dose of happiness and a nice escape route from the pre-packaged wasteland of FM radio in the 21st Century. Having bought the CD several years ago, I could hardly wait to compare the listening experience to the live performance that I saw earlier today, and I must admit, the CD was an excellent primer for the show.

The most likable characteristic was the way the vocals in the live show matched the vocals on the CD.

Listening to Alegria makes you feel as if you've entered a fantasy land full of benign and carefree elves, goblins, and other wondrous mischievous misfit creatures whose only job is to take you to the edge of enjoyment and to let you define what your own limits are. And while the visual effects of the live show are mesmerizing, they would be useless without this powerful sound track, which is worth listening to on its own merits.

The songs are all built on melancholy keys, with the arrangements designed to tug at your emotions and create a feeling of Bohemia and old Europe. And despite the expectations of anyone who has ever seen a Cirque show, they deliver just the right dosage of fantasy and escapism with enough versatility to favor a nice drive, a quiet evening at home, or background music for a good book or even working on a project.

My favorite song on the CD is Vai Vedrai, which is a trademark Cirque song, with the haunting vocal adding to the sentimental gipsy lament that it seems to be broadcasting.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good alternative listen, wants to share music with the entire family, or is interested in the Cirque du Soleil phenomenon. Also recommended is a visit to any live performance by this troop, as well as any other of their CD, or DVD/VHS products. They truly deliver the goods.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2005-06-09

I saw "Alegria" when it came to my area, and the show took my breath away. I have seen both "O" and "Dralion," and heard samplings of other Cirque shows, but "Alegria" has perhaps the most upbeat songs on it. Favorites include the title track, 'Vai Vedrai,' and 'Querer.'

Definitely worth your money, and it provides very ecclectic listening/mood music.

3 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!.......2005-01-11

Despite the interesting and colorful jacket, the music is very disappointing. Most of the music sounds the same. This would not be a CD that I would recommend to others.

Delirium is Cirque du Soleil's idea of a greatest-hits package. Accompanying a show that's more music-driven than usual, the album is based on past Cirque songs--but unlike in Le Best Of, they're updated with new lyrics by Robbie Dillon and retooled by producer Francis Collard. The first song, "Cold Flame," is pretty typical, sounding both modern and traditional, a mix embodied by Elie Haroun's often Sting-like vocals. The most interesting tracks are the one that best embody Cirque's East-meets-West, everything-old-is-new-again ethos: "Too High," with its propulsive dance beat and Middle Eastern accents; "A Walk on Water" with its French-language rap; "La Nova Alegría," layering Brazilian-flavored guitars and a regular, pounding thump. Overall the more thoughtful songs, which often threaten to devolve into sap ("Let Me Fall"), don't work as well as the danciest ones ("One Love" is a real corker that sounds like it'd be a classic in European discothèques). Biggest missed opportunity: Britain's Nitin Sawhney contributes only a brief spoken interlude to "Lifeline." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

The music of Cirque du Soleil as you have never heard it. Uplifting Pop/Rock melodies mixed with exciting electronica sounds.

The album DELIRIUM delves into Cirque du Soleil's music catalogue to present a selection of pieces by René Dupéré (KÀ, Alegria), Benoit Jutras (O, La Nouba) and Violaine Corradi (Varekai). The originals have been transformed by producer Francis Collard into new works that combine percussion with electronics and world music. The result is a striking pop sound, blending percussive rhythms with reincarnated Cirque du Soleil tunes and melodies. The words are primarily in English; Robbie Dillon, who contributed texts to the show ZUMANITY, wrote the new English lyrics. The voices in this eclectic mix include Brazilian Italo-Cuban Dessy Di Lauro and French-Canadian artist Jacynthe.

About the Show: DELIRIUM is a music show currently touring arenas across North America, a spectacle of unprecedented proportions that pushes the limits of arena performance. It recounts an urban fable, recreating a larger-than-life universe where music, dance and theatre blend with gigantic projections on vast surfaces. Larger than life!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-07-23

I love Cirque, and when I saw Delirium I thought that it was an innovative concept. This CD has songs from other shows, but many now sung in English. This contains some of the best songs from all of the production shows.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Cirque du Soleil CD.......2007-07-04

I loved the show and this CD is typical to the rest of the CD's of theirs in comparison to the show. A good compilation that doesn't match the flow of the show. I still enjoy the music very much and am very glad that I bought it. I can't wait for the next show to come to town!

1 out of 5 stars My goodness, has someone at Cirque gone mad?!.......2007-06-16

I've seen four Cirque shows, own several of their CDs, have even been invited to one of their cast parties. I love this organization and typically love their music.

I'll not mince words: I haven't seen the Delirium show, but this music is an abomination. It reminds me of the stereotypical uncle-trying-to-be-hip, who manages only to cause others to cringe while horribly embarrassing himself in the process.

Where's the beauty? Where's the sense of wonder, the passion? Who on earth thought this'd be a good idea?!

When I first heard songs from this CD, I felt as if some music of the greats had been hastily recreated into muzak or mobile ringtones or whatever. There was a vague hint of the melodies of great Cirque songs, but no soul. No soul whatsoever.

Cirque folks, you should be ashamed to put out... stuff... like this. :(

5 out of 5 stars Good Memories.......2007-01-23

This CD brought back great memories of the show we saw in Dallas in February 2006...it is also excellent driving music on long road trips to keep my husband focused--the beat is very intense on all tracks. Even though I do not particularly enjoy euro-techno otherwise, the arrangements on this CD are very enjoyable and I love the lyrics to a lot of the songs. While others might not like the new arrangement of Alegria, I for one thought the updated version was great--just for different purposes perhaps?

4 out of 5 stars Good, but no great.......2007-01-19

The Delirium cd of the Cirque du Soleil series has in many parts a very good time putting together the components that many fans are crazy for. Some of it is iffy, it is not traditional but it is cute and overall it was not a bad buy. It is great background music and shouldn't really be taken for anything more serious than that.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2005-08-30

I recommend this to any art-song lover, and really, anybody at all. Gens does an excellent performance of a great collection of beautiful French songs. Her voice is enjoyable all the way, she has great expression, and a convincing mastery of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected glimpse of happiness........2001-07-21

Stendhal wrote that "the sight of anything extremely beautiful, in nature or in art, brings back the memory of what one loves, with the speed of lightning. That is, ... all that is beautiful and sublime in the world takes part in the beauty of what one loves, and this unexpected glimpse of happiness immediately fills the eyes with tears. This is how love of the beautiful and love give each other life." This is what Ms. Gens will do to you when you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting recital of French Melodies.......2000-07-07

This is a most enjoyable release, all the more so because Veronique Gens, who is generally considered a baroque specialist on the lyric stage, may well be a torch-bearer of the elusive art of the French song in the coming decades. The voice of Gens, which is solid and well-integrated with an alluring dash of vibrancy embedded therein, is eminently suited to the repertoire represented in this new Virgin Classics release. Her secure technique (just a hint of strain in one or two high notes) also renders it possible for her to fine down her voice in the ending of phrases to a charming effect. Being a native French speaker certainly helps, too. Although hers is perhaps not the most strongly-etched of readings, she is able to inflect the text intelligently, and her subtle but heart-felt stresses on particular words not only serve to illuminate the poetic prose, but also meld beautifully with the notes that she sing.

The CD opens with songs by Faure, and while Gens may not possess the charm and naturalness of utterance of Maggie Teyte, whose recordings of Faure's songs are, in the opinion of this reviewer, unsurpassable, she can conjure up the right kind of feeling for every song as no one can. Her tempo for the popular "Apres un reve" is a trifle too laid back. Yet, she conveys to perfection the dream-like quality of the song, as well as the sense of confusion and regret at awakening. Her singing of "Le papillon et la fleur" is delightfully vivid, and her evocation of the feeling of sadness being kept in restraint in "Les berceaux" makes the performance both intimate and touching.

The Debussy group is no less impressive. Despite the innovative idiom in which most of these songs are composed, Gens is able bring them off effortlessly and stylishly. She is in total command whether in the serenity of "Beau soir", the romanticism of "Nuit d'etoiles", the rustic charm of "Fleur des bles", or the harrowing grimness of "Noel des enfants qui n'ont plus de maison", the last one composed when Debussy was being haunted by the atrocities of the Great War. In "Fetes galantes I", although the vocal and piano parts are often independent of each other, Gens's remarkable interpretation succeeds in unifying the two strands into a picturesque and colourful whole. The "3 Chansons de Bilitis", which are composed very much in the style of PELLEAS ET MELISANDE, also find an ideal interpreter in Gens where, blessed with a keen sense of rhythm, she succeeds in propelling the texts forward with musical grace and dramatic import. She would surely make a wonderful Melisande.

The Poulenc is equally fine. The young soprano is able to do full justice to the diverse moods in "Banalites", which, according to Olivier Opdebeeck, who penned the CD notes, is composed in a "part-melancholy, part-joyful tone with a barb of irony which the composer identified in the poet". The "2 Melodies de Guillaume Apollinaire" are sharply contrasted, one (Montparnasse) languid and brooding and the other (Hyde Park) gusty and piquant. Gens's singing of "Les chemins de l'amour", a cross between a Viennese waltz and a cabaret song, is loveliness itself and provides a delicious end to an enchanting recital.

The major reservation that this reviewer has involves the accompaniment of Roger Vignoles. While he is able to provide secure support for the singer, his playing is uncharacterful and even bland. Besides, the piano tone seems to be rather thin at times. Nonetheless, this should not detract one from the sensuous beauty of Gens's performance. This reviewer hopes that Virgin Classics would be encouraged by the success of this release so that they can present this most promising singer in further volumes of French songs by, say, Chausson, Ravel and Duparc.

5 out of 5 stars Nuit d'toiles - Melodies Francaises/ Gens, Vignoles.......2000-06-13

Not being a professional, but loving the genre of French melodies I'll avoid technical commentary; I have become a collector of these in recent years and find this one extremely satifying and appreciate the variety this CD presents.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Vocal Performance.......2000-05-01

This ranks as one of the very best recordings of French 'melodies' that I have yet heard. Unlike most other singers, Gens gives the words drama and meaning. Too many singers perform these works in a detached 'artistic' manner that often makes them all sound almost alike. I say this not to belittle Gens' voice (which is superb), but to indicate that this disk will take you beyond the 'standard' interpretations of these works. I had a chance to compare one of the melodies with another recent recording by Schafer, another singer whom I respect Both were being featured in a local record store. It was hard to realize they were actually singing the same piece. I recently saw Gens perform much of the same program at a recital in NYC. This was the best recital I had heard in a very long time (I go to many). The disk is almost as good. It suffers a bit from a very unnatural recorded sound: the microphone is much too close to the singer and the piano is much too forward. Also the accompaniest in NYC was clearly better. Nevertheless, it would be hard to find a better recorded performance. The more I listen to the disk, the less I notice these drawbacks. The choice of repetoire is also well done. I particularly liked the Debussy 'Trois chansons de Bilitis.' She ends with 'Les chemins de l'amour' which Poulenc wrote for Jean Anouilh's play 'Leaocadia'. This has become very popular outside the normal recital circuit. If you get only one disk of French melodies, this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Admittedly biased.......2006-04-20

I am, I admit, utterly biased. I worked for the show several years ago, my husband is one of the musicians (when you hear the sax on this CD, that's him) and I have a deep and abiding love and respect for the show, the music and above and beyond all else, the artists who make the experience of show and music what it is: Magical.
One of the suggestions I would make for any Cirque show is don't expect to understand it, just enjoy the energy swirling around - enjoy the music (and don't expect to understand the language, real language is rarely used - call it langue du Cirque - language of the Cirque - if you will - please also understand that most CD's only have a certain amount of time/space available - everything just couldn't fit - you can imagine I'm sure how difficult it was to choose the music to put on - but knowing the work of Benoit Jutras and the caliber of the musicians on the show then and now, these are some of the most professional, beautiful people - I'm not speaking of physical beauty, I'm speaking of artistic beauty - there is soul in this music, there is a sense of what the show is when you listen. Above all, there is everything from longing to celebration in this music. Cirque du Soleil is about losing yourself in a world of magic and artistry - why overanalyze it? Just enjoy the magic, enjoy the ride, enjoy the Cirque...

5 out of 5 stars The music brought it all back.......2005-10-26

I've seen O twice. There's so much going on that you can't get it all the first time. The music brought each part back. If you've not seen one of these shows, DO IT. They're expensive, but when you get in, it makes sense. Can't wait to see Corteo when it comes this way!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-09-26

True, there were some good memories from the show, but overall this CD didn't stack up to other greats (like Quidam).

Since O is such a visually-based show, I needed to be there again. Plus, I think my favourite 30 minutes of music from the 90 minute show didn't make the 60 minute CD. There was one song from the barge sketch in particular that just knocked my socks off, and I was hoping to find it on the CD, but didn't. Hence my disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack to a Sublime show........2004-09-06

If you have not seen a cirque du soleil show, treat yourself to one. The ticket price may be unreasonable, but when you see the production and feats of dexterity, strength and skill you'll understand where your money is going. The soundtrack to the show "O" (phonetic for "eau" or water, which is the main theme for this performance) is a diligent sampling of the music you will hear at Bellagio in Las Vegas. I warn the buyers of this CD that the show runs approximately 90 minutes, and the CD is only 60 or so. Therefore if you were expecting extended mixes to match your "O" experience 100%, you will be disappointed. The overall music selection is okay as a stand alone. I'd use it for background music while doing something else. If you've seen the show, this will definetely spark some vivid memories. My personal favorite is about 5 minutes into the 5th track, Remous. (the barge sketch)

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful piece of work by Cirque.....again!.......2004-01-09

What takes a Cirque show to another level is the meshing of amazing music into nearly every act. The music brings back the feeling of that night. If you saw the show, and loved it as I did, then the CD is a must have. I would recommend it even for people who have not seen the marvelous show known as "O". This very well be my second favorite Cirque soundtrack, behind Alegria(and Francesca Gagnon) of course;-)

After I saw the show at the Bellagio and left without this CD, I regretted it very much. These songs bring back the feeling of that magical night. The haunting and lamenting voice in Nostalgie brings back the show as if I were there again. Other favorites are Jeux d'Eau, Mer Noire, Tzelma......and of course "O".
