5 out of 5 stars Howard Hewitt's new CD, "If Only".......2007-06-29

I am a huge fan of Howard Hewitt's from back in the Shalimar days as well, but more specifically, when he ventured out on his own. This is one singer that understands his emotional, feminine side, and can relate to women in a profound way with the words to his songs.

My fave song on his new CD, If Only, is "To Please U". We all remember back in the day when true love songs actually were meaningful - well, this is Howard Hewitt at his best. What saddens me is that I haven't heard this CD (or even Rick James' new CD, released around the same time), on local radio stations. It is sad that the balladeers of the 70's and 80's aren't recaptured in today's music. We need the spiritual message and spreading Love! This is why I will always be a fan of "Old School Music". That is where it was at!

There are several other songs that I just love on his new CD, "Is this True Love?" and "Can U feel me?". If you are a true Howard Hewitt fan, you will pick up this CD now! He is also on Rick James' new CD, Deeper Still, "Do you Wanna Play?". Amazon had a deal a few weeks ago on both CD's. Because of the samples and reviews, I went and bought both CD's. Love them! If you are a true fan and love that soulful sound unique to Howard Hewitt, pick up his new CD today, "If Only".

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Hearfelt and beautiful........2007-06-29

Ex Shalamar vocalist, Howard Hewett will please his legion of fans with this Soul set that fuses Howard's relaxed vocal style with Smooth Soul. Several cuts grab the headlines including the stunningly beautiful "Can U Feel Me" and the title song.
Ballads like "Is This True Love" ooze emotion where Howard is joined by Gerald Albright on sax.
And if you love ballads check out the searing slowie "Don't U Wonder 2". Old school style numbers like "I Wanna Know" maintain a mid-tempo groove.
Hewett has never sounded better.
Give this record a spin, it is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Shades Of Shalamar.......2007-06-11

Howard Hewitt has always been one of my favorite r & b singers. Since the days of Shalamar, he has had staying power when most of the singers that were around during the same time period have vanished. He has an incredibly, beautiful voice. This album just reminds his true fans how truly gifted he is. If you don't have this album, I hope you get it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2007-06-06

First, the poster named Sunshine hit the nail on the head in describing this masterpiece. This has to be one of the most comprehensive CDs that I've listened to in a long time. Howard hit a homerun, scored a touchdown, and won a championship with this album. I purchased it the day after it came out and have been listening to it everyday since. I also have it in my MP3/4 player.

It is so hard to narrow down my favorites, but I will go with "If Only", "To Please U", "Can U Feel Me", "Is This True Love", "I Wanna Know", "How Do I Love You". The whole CD is beautiful. I also love how he gives glory and how he, in a mature way, sings about love, because love is where it's at. He also did a nice rendition with Gerald Albright on "Imagine". I just cannot stop gushing over this CD. It is modern, but signature Howard Hewett and the vocals are still impeccable.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-05-30

Howard Hewett has a wonderful voice and style and it shows once again. But the material is very weak, almost only slowtempo tracks, quite similar to each other, and lyrics without much meaning. Why doesn't a mature man like Hewett sing realistically about mature relationships but instead of "girls", "babies" or "babes"...Will sell this CD as soon as possible.

Thanks to his much-publicized personal travails, it's easy to overlook the multiple talents that originally made Crosby a star in his days with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash. This, his first solo effort, was recorded in 1971 (following Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Deja Vu) and contains some of his most impressive vocal and songwriting work, including the haunting "Laughing," the mantra-like "Music Is Love," and the extended, impressionistic "Cowboy Movie." With guest appearances by such famous friends as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, and Jerry Garcia, it's a fascinating chapter in an always-interesting career that's all too often been overshadowed by headlines. --Scott Schinder

this is one of the classics from the early 70s

5 out of 5 stars Dave's best?.......2007-04-16

I don't know if this is Crosby's best work. It seems like it to me. I love poetry and I too am a musician. I can't think of any poetry, or music to date that takes me any further out of this world than this jewel of artistry. It's exquisite. I don't believe I was mistaken.

5 out of 5 stars Longevity.......2007-03-14

One intriguing aspect of music ( and cinema also ) is how some become old ( meaning the perception ) and some , don't. This collection , originally an LP and now , remastered as a CD, was recorded in 1971, 36 years ago!! and my son ( 27 old ) immediately like it. I'm suspect to say anything because I'm 52 and anyone could say that I am an old nostalgic guy, but its ( or his - Crosby ) atmosphere - chords, instrumental, vocal harmony(using playback to produce complexes vocal chords ),lyrics, are completely contemporary, or better, ageless.God blessing and long life for David Crosby.

5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2007-03-11

to come out of Crosby , a forgotten masterpiece that is comming back as a result of Voyage ( Essential Buried Treasures ) , an interesting listen of a very talented musician of my generation ... Love sailing anyway ...

5 out of 5 stars this Lp stomps almost all CSNY solos.......2007-02-08

I believe this LP ranks with the best N. Young and Stills solos and it should! After all, guest musicians include members of: the dead, the Jefferson airplane, , Quicksilver messenger service and other artists like J. Mitchell, N. Young etc. it may have the record for guest significant/major recording artists on one solo LP.

Simply put this LP represents many "firsts" beside DC's "first" LP. This may be the "first" LP that N. Young contributed a song that can only be found here, I know of no other LP with as many major sanfransico/haight ashbury groups on one lp. This is the only LP on which you can find these songs. I don't know why they're not included in the box set, instead they include many CSN and CSN&Y songs...probably in order to sell it, which brings up another strange thing about this LP, the critics hated it. THANK GOD almighty I didn't read the reviews or I may never have bought this LP!!!! That was back when I didn't know better. I equate music critics on par with weather men and stock brokers - professions seemingly incapable of doing their jobs accurately no matter how much help they have!!!!

Back to the music. I believe the quality in writing and playing place this LP beyond any solo CSN&Y LP and elevate it to equal any CSN and CSN&Y LP except deja vu. The only detraction I make when I place it par with these LP's is that it had no "hits" which we find abound on CSN and CSN&Y LP's.

bottom line: if you like CSN and CSN&Y you will love this!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blown away.......2007-07-21

I've always loved this album, and recently decided to add a digital copy to supplement the original LP. I went for the surround-sound version because I've enjoyed the other classic albums (Pet Sounds, Workingman's Dead) that have been remixed for 5.1. But none of them prepared me for the unbelievable experience of this one. When "Cowboy Movie" came on, I was about levitated out of my chair. I have never heard such immediacy, clarity, or power from a 5.1 mix. The sense of being in the middle of the mix is just tremendous. High praise to Stephen Barncard, both for the job he did on the original recording, and for this terrific enhancement.

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic.......2007-07-03

This is one of the finest albums of the late sixties early seventies. The remastering is beautiful, the DVD sound amazing. When the engineer had Crosby in the studio about the time that the Dead's American Beauty was being recorded, he ran the recording tapes a double speed. You can hear with a clarity unparalleled for the time.

The band includes so many of the best (look up PERRO, the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra). The songs are meditations. "What Are their Names" is one of the most powerful antiwar songs ever written. The vocals and instrumentals are flawless, mellow, strong. Crosby is to be revered, for this gem alone.

You will not regret.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, disappointing package.......2007-04-07

This is a 5 star recording, but with several caveats. I agree with Adam Janson's review- I also know there is additional music around. It's not hard to go on line and search for a bootleg called "Everybody Here Can Be In The Band." It has some earlier mixes of songs, and additional jams as well as other songs that didn't make the album. There is another live bootleg of Crosby and various Dead members called "David And The Dorks" which was a live concert from December 1970. Why wasn't any of this material used?
Also disappointing is the short picture gallery, which doesn't include all the original pictures from the original record sleeve. And, although a video is listed, there is none.
What a sad way to disappoint those of us who consider this to be one of the greatest albums ever released.
Buyer- beware. You're getting less than you deserve, especially at this high price.

5 out of 5 stars Crosby's masterpiece, with a little help from his friends.......2007-03-07

"I wonder who they are
The men who REALLY run this land?
And I wonder why they run it
With such a thoughtless hand.
What are their names
And on what streets do they live?

I'd like to RUN right over.
and give them a piece of my mind
..."

Still true, 40 years later, huh?

Crosby combines the services of parts of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Neil Young (see above), Joni Mitchell and others. Everybody sings and plays. Hippies who loved harmony. Great harmonies that float around the room like organ chords flying in Grace Cathedral. Very San Francisco Haight-Ashbury. In the late 60's these groups often gave free concerts, just set up amps in Golden Gate Park and played. There was none of the competition that would come later, music was communal! People report getting a contact-high just from listening.

Particularly wonderful I have always thought, is "Orleans", the laid-back "Mt Tamalpais High", the Title track and Neil Young's song quoted above, is just as true today as in 1969. I like all but the edgy "Cowboy Movie' but don't let that keep you from buying this masterpiece. Jerry Garcia, new to the pedal steel guitar, experimented and took risks a seasoned professional wouldn't do and they all succeed marvelously!

Crosby is at the heights of his powers before drugs and coke would ruin his life.

The new CD version is much better sounding than the murky older one, but is a tad bright in places. The LP still has the best sound.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing album, somewhat disappointing reissue.......2007-03-03

David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" is an excellent, five star album featuring a number of wonderful guests. It is superb and deserves much more recognition that it gets. You can read the other reviews here or on the page of the original album release to hear more about that. What I'm not happy about is getting only ONE bonus track with the remaster. I've heard over a complete CD of different versions and different songs out there from these sessions. Why not release a 2 CD Legacy Edition with that material? They surely have access to it. This is a disappointing move by the label and I can only assume was done so as to not impede sales of the David Crosby box set "Voyage" released at the same time (which is excellent, by the way). When will we see these extra tracks officially released?

5 out of 5 stars supreme collection of a maestro's work.......2007-04-02

This scrupulously assembled box solves the where-do-I-start question for anyone who wants some serious representation of this master's work in his or her collection. Waller's ouevre is immense, multifaceted, and essential. So a box like this that culls from his most important categories of music [one disk each of his own sung songs, instrumentals, and tin pan alley covers] is an invaluable boon to any jazz fans that want more than a single-disk 'intro' set. The selections are brilliant, the sound is dazzling, and the accompanying documentation is amazing. All in all, one of the best jazz boxes I personally have ever seen. Recommended with the highest honors.

5 out of 5 stars Hand Full of Keys.......2007-01-20

There's too little of Waller available on CD-this begins to make up the lack. As usual, his playing is what stands out in this excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Meet Fats!!!.......2007-01-19

Mr Orrin Keepnews, one of the legendary jazz producers has given us a great gift: a 3cd box set to get all music fans started on knowing and appreciating one of the great genious of early jazz: Fats Waller. Fats was a total package. He was a singer, an entretainer, an acomplished pianist, and one of the greatest composers in jazz. That he died before his 40th birthday is sad but also speaks greatly of the man who could compose songs just by opening his mouth.

The collection is divided in 3: disc one features Fats the composer, disc 2 Fats the pianist and disc 3 is Fats the entretainer (singing Tin Pan alley songs). Great care and love was put in selecting the songs and the packgaing. The booklet alone deserves a grammy. Great essays and photos. And the price is right. You dont have a reason why you should not get this box.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to Fats Waller.......2006-10-03

My wife bought this set for me after hearing about it on NPR. Though I love jazz, my album collection is only fair to middlin' (e.g., Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc.) and this is my first Fats Waller album. Though it is my first, it won't be my last - as I listened to Fats' phenomenal stride piano and Armstrong-reminiscent voice, I became an instant fan. I have had it two days and have listened to it at home, in the car on the way to work and even at work. I can't get enough.

This is a fan review. I leave it to the real jazzophiles to provide technical reviews (e.g., I can't speak to the production quality or selection of songs, given how prolific a songwriter/performer Fats was). As a new fan, however, I highly recommend this set as an introduction to Fats' music and it's hard to beat the price for a box set. The set includes an informative booklet that provides background on and plenty of pictures of Fats, His Rhythm and his times.

A few of my favorite songs from the album (so far) are "Honeysuckle Rose," "Hold My Hand," and "Honey Hush." That being said, I haven't heard a song I haven't liked.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

Album Description

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS is taking over the world, one broken heart at a time. Since the 2004 release of their Victory Records powerhouse debut album, The Silence In Black And White, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS spent every single week of 2005 in the Top 200. They have headlined sold out tours in the US and UK, headlined Warped Tour 2005, appeared in every major music publication, are in heavy rotation on MTV and Fuse, and have toured with the likes of SUM 41 and FALL OUT BOY.

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS are set to make February 28, 2006 a day that will go down in history. After spending the fall of 2005 holed up in the studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS have surfaced with a painfully beautiful album that is nothing short of the biggest rock record of 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ITS AWESOME!!!!!.......2007-07-08

ok first i am not a kid. i'm a mid teen. anyways, i really liked this album. my friends kept saying things about Hawthrone Heigths so i had to listen to them. after the first song, i couldnt stop listening to it. now the people on here keep saying "you can ingore the screaming" ok, now THE SCREAMING IS THE BEST PART. and thats why some people know it as "SCREAMO!" ok? and i only dis-liked 1 or 2 songs. The song "December" is one of the songs that i dis-like. it was to slow and didnt have good beat. but the first 3 songs are my favorite. there fast and have an awesome beat. well over all i gave this 5 stars. you really should buy it. its worth it. :D

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars because I think they have potential.......2007-03-16

Um...I think these guys are good, but they have to decide what genre they want to be. Are they trying to be emo, screamo, metal? I'm confused.

All the songs sound the same. The only ones I recognize when I have my iPod on shuffle are "Dead in the Water" and "Decembers".

The songs all have the same theme. They need to vary a little bit.

Their voices are soft. This clashes disasterously with the screaming. Either they should stop singing so softly, or stop screaming.

-That was a lot of negative stuff, but there are good things too.

Their music is good. Not too harsh, not too mellow (except for Decembers).

The reason I think their songs are all about the same thing is because they are trying to tell a story. The pictures prove that.

Their music is good to put on when you're writing a story or dark poetry (like I do). It's also good to put on when you're mad and just want to drown out the world (again, with the exception of Decembers. It's just too painfully mellow and slow. cough-they-sing-about-butterflies-cough)

...My final overview is, if you can find it cheap, buy it. I'd say under five dollars would be reasonable. You only need one version of it. I don't know why you'd buy two. But whatever. I'd wait for their next one anyways to judge them. They still have room for improvement.

2 out of 5 stars If Only You Were A (fill in the blank).......2006-11-07

Over all, not a terrible CD, if you can get past the screams. (Not good enough to release two versions of the same CD, however, even if it did have different artwork and DVDs inside.) Personally, the screaming "thing" doesn't add to the songs because it's such an OVERUSED device in several types of music nowadays, so it makes me want to skip ahead and see what's next rather than listen to the song finish. Guys in H.H., if you ever read any of these reviews, look for a different gimmick than "Emo-Screamo". If you want to wear your hearts on your sleeves, that's fine, but when you blend in with everyone else, your music will get lost in the shuffle. That's not a good thing, right?

As far as the screaming "thing" goes, a guy sounding like his [...] are being squeezed in a bench vise WHILE an unlubricated watermelon is being slowly inserted in his [...] is NOT singing, I don't care who is doing it...

2 out of 5 stars ughhh...what is this?.......2006-09-06

geez,im listening to this on itunes, and thinking about how much better other bands are then them.im completely against flooding with 'This band sucks!!!' no,i own this Cd and i listen to it...and the songs sound the same!!!i listen for the guitars and music, and the songs vocals and riffs sound like the same old ideas being repeated...seriously,like 'pens and needles' and 'this is who we are' begginings sound like they just took a guitar or two out.Listening to this,i just keep thinking 'havent i heard this song before!?' i havent heard their entire other album, but the tracks i heard were way better than half the repeats on this album!!!

if your looking for a good CD,i would not reccomend wasting your hard earned cash on this album.Just buy one of their songs and play it over and over, and you will have this album!!!

3 out of 5 stars Listening With An Open Mind.......2006-09-03

I'm sick of the extremists of the musical audience. 1's and 5's just because they're emo or they're your favorite band respectively? IF YOU HAVEN'T LISTENED TO THE FRIGGIN' ALBUM, DON'T POST. Seriously, it's not a difficult concept.

But on with the review. This album wasn't so bad. A lot of the tracks are forgettable, but that's typical of most albums you'll ever listen to. I bought this album because I loved the version of "Where Can I Stab Myself In the Ears" on the Underworld Evolution soundtrack, and I wanted to hear the original version.

While I discovered the original version wasn't all that great, I found that the album wasn't terrible. It aided in my exploration of "emo" and "screamo" music. "Screamo" I like much more than pure screamage because you can actually hear quite a bit of the words (!) rather than gibberish. This is my first Hawthorne Heights cd, so I can't compare it to their other albums. I like the use of the occasional scream with the generally smooth vocals.

Here is my breakdown,

The 5's:

"This Is Who We Are" because of pretty awesome musical opening.

"Decembers" (while this song is very ripe with emotion which emo-bashers will hate, I loved this song. It is one of those slower, mellow songs that are great for listening when you're upset and need a song that you can relate to.)

"Where Can I Stab Myself" because it sounds a little different from the other songs on the album.

The Radio Singles (which I didn't really care for):

"Saying Sorry" I did like the line "saying goodbye's the hardest part, wish we knew this from the start" because anyone can understand what the means. Whether it's the grandparent who just passed away or the love of your life who just broke up with you, you understand the difficulty in moving on. Other than that, eh. It was okay, but was never my favorite.

"Pens And Needles" I'm sorry, but I can't help to say "whatever."

Album Description

Two years after their brilliant pop-psych debut, 1967's We Are Ever So Clean, Blossom Toes unleashed this extraordinary fusion of acid rock and prog, emphasizing how far they'd come since the summer of love. Characterized by complex song structures and memorable guitar solos, and featuring a guest appearance on sitar from U.S. folkie Shawn Philips, the album has gone on to become a major cult favorite. Heavily bootlegged over the years, this is its first official reissue. Produced with the band's full involvement, it comes with seven bonus tracks, encompassing non-LP singles, demos, out-takes and live performances, as well as a full-color 12-page booklet incorporating many rare photographs and a comprehensive band history, as well as an introduction from the band's leader, Brian Godding. 5 out of 5 stars Now this is classic rock...Excellent obsure gem from 1969!.......2007-07-25

Blossom Toes was a band I discovered by accident in a used record store. I bought what turned out to be a bootleg copy of an album that has become a favorite of my since I heard the explosive opening cut, Peace Loving Man. Even the noisy pressing couldn't hide the fact that this is as good a psychedelic hard rock album as anything a major band could have accomplished, especially when compared to Led Zeppelin, Cream or any of the other heavyweights of that era. Progressive song structures, excellent twin guitar interplay, and unpredictability make this album a true classic. "Love Bomb" is possibly my favorite tune, a 7 minute tale of how greed and war affect us all- the lyrics truly are timeless. This album, reissued for the first time since an early 90's Japanese pressing, sounds wonderful due to the excellent remastering and has bonus tracks as well. A very worthwhile purchase for any rock fan looking for a classic rock album that truly delivers on all levels.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-31

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.
