Album Description

Four years since his last studio album, and following up on his highest charting radio single ever ("Personal Jesus", from Lest We Forget), Marilyn Manson returns with "Eat Me, Drink me". Art openings, soundtrack appearances, and personal circumstance have grabbed headlines for Manson in recent months, setting the stage for the release of Eat Me, Drink Me, which is unquestionably the artist's most personal statement yet. Always the provocateur, in what may be the ultimate subversion of the code of aggro-rock, the songs are immediately catchy - all jagged guitar hooks, anthemic choruses, with an overlying glam-rock sheen. Lyrically Manson has never been more riveting, seemingly having enough to draw from in his own life and from society at large to present a fresh, snarling vision.

3 out of 5 stars The Album's Musical Theme.......2007-08-06

I've been thinking this over for a while now. I won't bore you with the obvious: Manson changes his musical style every...yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. So what is the aesthetic theme behind this record?

After successive listens, it dawned on me that this album reads like Psychedelic bluesy vampiric Spaghetti Western meets Alice in Wonderland filled with large flickering neon signs (probably of crucifixes above churches) littering the landscape. I get the sense he now fancies himself as a psychedelic Glam Rock outlaw cowboy roaming the dusty, desolate badlands of Hollywood, wrangling for himself (and subsequently breaking the hearts of) some dainty and not-so-dainty missus and ma'am's and harlots and young naive teenage actresses (which he is doing).

It certainly seems the case with songs like "Putting Holes in Happiness" and "Are you the Rabbit?". Even "They Said Hell's Not Hot" sounds like, dare I say it, 80's era Bon Jovi (Slippery When Wet?). There's also a very movie atmosphere running throughout this work and it wouldn't surprise me if the recent events of his life catalogued by this album began somewhere around the time he made a cameo in the vamp flick "Rise".

Anyway, these are just my $0.02 which I hope would aid in figuring out how to approach and define this album.

2 out of 5 stars Manson must be tired.......2007-08-03

this collection seems slower and darker than usual. After listening, I wondered if Manson was depressed over the recent breakup with his wife, and it was affecting his music's mood.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2007-08-02

i love every song on here. the guitar work is amazing. its lyrically brutal and the man just knows how to write killer songs

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best, Not the Worst.......2007-08-02

I was a little disappointed by this CD. After all the hype from Manson himself proclaiming this was the great gothic vampire album and all, that's what I expected it to be. But it's not terribly gothic (most of his work isn't), and other than "If I Was Your Vampire" it isn't overly vampiric. Manson comes off sounding either bitter or commonly sleazy most of the time. In an untypical Manson move, he's said openly that "Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery" is aimed at My Chemical Romance, which helps make this feel like a personal "F*** You" album.

On "Are You the Rabbit" and "Eat Me, Drink Me," Manson breaks away somewhat from the air of griping and enters a more exploratory style; it's too bad we don't get to see him continue that exploration through the rest of the album. But even the bad songs stay in your head, especially the loose-stitched "Heart-Shaped Glasses." At least this CD proves that Manson hasn't fallen prey to stagnation; he's still very much in the process of evolving.

5 out of 5 stars Even the God of !@#$ can bleed........2007-08-01

I've been a Manson fan since way back in the Antichrist Superstar days. I really came to appreciate him when he followed up that album with Mechanical Animals. Rather than make Antichrist Superstar 2, he went in a completely different direction. Manson is essentially an artist who plays whatever he wants, and that is why I like him.

People whine that this album is "slow" as if Manson never has made slow depressing songs and was always a thrash metal band. I hear a lot of complaints from people who simply want Manson to be some anti right-wing anti religious for their sole amusement as if he is some monkey who should dance for their change.

Yeah, because rock n' roll is all about conforming to people's standards.

Manson was suicidal, got a divorce, was basically broken and bleeding. To fix his wounds he plugged an amp and a microphone into his scars and made one of the most interesting albums he's ever made. It's raw, it's experimental, it's depressing. Some people will hate this, their loss.

I was pretty disappointed with Golden Age of Grotesque (it was catchy but hollow) so my expectations were lowered. This album for me pretty much kicked my head in. It's the most emotionally haunting album since Mechanical Animals and he sounds even more vindictive and pissed off than he did with Holywood. Kudos to Tim Skold for creating such good guitar work which causes me to involuntarily air-guitar while listening to it.

Is it my favorite album of his? I would put Mechanical Animals and Holywood higher than this, they were a bit more cohesive thematically. This album isn't one where you can just pop it in any old time, but this is the album you can pop in when you are pissed off or depressed and love the hell out of it.

So in the end I am one of the Manson fans who actually gave this album a damn chance and liked it a lot. Manson has come back to school all these radio friendly manufactured-depression emo-screamo bands that whine about how "high school is oh so hard" what real down-and-dirty raw depressed experimental rock n' roll is all about.

4 out of 5 stars It's good, but! .......2007-05-12

As with all greatest hits packages theirs a lot of the radio friendly stuff and not enough of the really good stuff. Heart are a great band period. Their early stuff is simply fantastic and truly stands the test of time. The reinvented 80's heart was also very good, even if it's not quite as good as the early releases were. Their latest release, Jupiter's Child was a back to the basics what got us noticed in the first place release and it was another gem.

Ann and Nancy and supporting cast should be very proud of what they've accomplished in their careers. They have given us some true classics to look back on with fond memories and they have given us some newer releases that are every bit as good and even fresh sounding in a world of corporate crap.

I really wish Heart would go back and re-master all their releases and give us the listener a Sabbath style Black Box release and that would truly be a greatest hits package.

This collection of tunes is very good, but any true heart fan will be disappointed as it's just missing to much good stuff!!

I give it a 4 because it's Heart and because it rocks from start to finish, but I want more!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Best of Heart.......2007-01-12

This compilation from the Capitol Epic label is the best available over- view of the female operated hard rock band Heart. It has all the great songs from their early, middle and late periods. The early period features hard rock with incredible guitar performances, the middle period (after their lead guitarist was fired for drug burn-out) features fine rock arrangements and great songs. The late period has beautiful arrangements of beautiful songs beautifully sung. For someone wanting to find out what Heart is all about, this is the double CD to buy. My only beefs are the few live performances here are not their best and you only get the reprise of "Dreamboat Annie," one of their best songs.

1 out of 5 stars SONY MUSIC producing defective HEART cds.......2006-12-09

I bought the "Essential Heart" cd from Tower Rercords this weekend.
I just tried listening to it but Track #17 SKIPS and shuts down my media player.

The store (TOWER) is closing down & they refuse to even EXCHANGE IT!
They told me to contact the ones who release this album. All the info. & links on the back of the cd are no longer valid. I went to SonyMusic and even their links to this cd are defunct. I was able to find [...]which links back to SonyMusic - but when I call the two "QUALITY MANAGMENT" phone numbers they have, both are defunct and refer me back to the store I bought it from.

I am extremely angry and want my $15 back! No wonder Tower is going out of business with such bad customer service. All I'm going to be more careful before I buy a Sony/CapitolRecords cd!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but it's missing a few songs........2006-11-10

I would have given this compilation a 5-star review except that there were four great songs that were ommited: 1. "Strong, Strong Wind" 2. "Surrender to Me" 3. "Tall, Dark, Handsome Stranger" 4. "Back to Avalon". Other than that, this is a wonderful 2-CD package from an awesome group.

Amazon.com essential recording

Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." If by some chance you've not yet been introduced to Buffett's music, this album is the best way to say hello. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars If you only could have one Jimmy Buffet CD this is it!.......2007-06-11

All the best songs, a must have if you don't have any Jimmy yet. And a great addition to your existing Jimmy collection, and a great spare with all the great songs for the car CD, and what would Jimmy do? You guessed it! Go for it, you will not be disappointed because there is no bad Jimmy Buffet songs.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one that hooks you.......2007-03-24

I've been listening to Jimmy for quite a few years. A friend recommended I get this album, and after that, I had to have everything else. If you've read my reviews, you know I've been rough on Jimmy's incessant string of repetitive live albums. This is the good stuff- All the songs are pulled from Jimmy's (non-Barnaby) albums up to but not including Coconut Telegraph. It skips the album Havana Daydreamin' entirely. I agree with other reviewers that the song selection leaves out a plethora of great Buffett tunes, but you'll find them eventually. This is a sampling of the artist in his prime, and if you like it, it's safe to say you'll enjoy the larger body of his work. If you don't like it, none of his other work is going to do it for you. I always thought Jimmy would come through with a greatest hits vol.2, or at least a double cd encompassing his larger body of work. That's what "Meet Me in Margaritaville" was supposed to be, but that collection just isn't coherent and definitive as Songs You Know By Heart. After becoming a hard-core fan, I have to say that this collection is really going to be the pinnacle of his compilation albums. So, if you're interested in trying out the works of Jimmy Buffett, start here. I'll bet you won't be disappointed. This stuff is solid gold. Thank you for reading my review!(note to Jimmy- why not consider putting the title track to "havana daydreamin'" on this as a bonus track for future pressings of the cd? It's a heck of a song, and it's from the era. It would fit right in.)

5 out of 5 stars Parrotheads Unite!.......2007-01-13

Truly songs we all know by heart. Great music - hard to pick a song that doesn't go well with a Corona or Margarita, and hard to pick a song since that he's done that would push one of these off the CD. The song vividly captures the spirit of Margaritaville - we are turning into the people our parents warned us about, or so we would like to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect recipe for summer.......2006-10-07

Step one: buy this cd
Step two: buy new blender
Step three: buy lots of rum and fruit mixes
Step four: mix the rum and fruit
Step five: pour the mixture into a glass
Step six: put on the cd
Step seven: repeat steps three through six as often as needed

If you don't drink alcohol then you'll still enjoy this greatest hits collection. All the early hits are here and it's really all you need to know about the guy. But there is a lot more good stuff out there. Make sure you give it all a listen.

Their sound is the perfect combination of guitar-driven Hard Rock and ambitious Symphonic Metal. Underneath the aggressive wall of sound lies a secret beauty that can often be dark and uninviting. 13 tracks including 'Howling', 'Frozen' and 'Final Destination'.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another great album by WT.......2007-07-29

First I'd like to make one note. There are three versions of this album out. This version is probably the smartest choice. It's less than half the cost of the imports and it also includes one more song, Stand My Ground. Sure Stand My Ground has already been released on Silent Force. But you're still talking about half the cost and one added bonus song. It sounds like a no-brainer to me.

I got into Within Temptation with their album Silent Force. I immediately fell in love with their music. Their mix of orchestral music and heavy mettle riffing along with Sharon's amazing voice range landed their music as an instant staple in my collection.

This album is no less amazing. The lyrics can be related to by anyone. The variety in each song keeps the album from getting dull or redundant.

If you like Within Temptation, this album will not disappoint. If you've never heard their music before, I heavily suggest both this album and Silent Force. This album would probably be a great starting point, though, given it's price.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a US release!.......2007-07-27

Within Temptation are back with their latest arsenal of symphonic rock and metal songs bound to infest themselves in the listener's mind for days on end, and while The Heart of Everything may not benefit from strong orchestral emphasis (as seen on their previous album), it will surely retain WT's loyal fanbase, and will no doubt be their key to crack into the US market.

When I first listened to this album (half asleep on a tour bus in France, mind you), I wasn't sure what to think. There are some notable changes from the band's last album: Sharon's vocals don't quite come off as angelic as they did on "Jillian" or "Dark Wings," instead remaining in a somewhat lower key for the majority of the first few tracks - with virtually none of the high-pitched screeching that distinguished them from the rest of the symphonic metal pack. "The Howling" is a good example of this - much of the verses feature shouted vocals from Sharon that may take some getting used to, but actually suit the song quite nicely.

The next two tracks, "What Have You Done" and "Frozen" were rather disappointing for me. The first makes "Stand My Ground" look like Dark Tranquillity, and I can only assume that this was forced by the band's label. Anyone who said this song sounded like "Bring Me to Life" was right on the mark. Half the vocals are done by Life of Agony frontman Keith Caputo, and as far as I'm concerned, he's no longer welcome on a WT song again. :P That aside, there's really little here to maintain my interest, and "Frozen" is nothing to write home about either. Sharon's vocals seem strained during the chorus, similar to those of Alanis Morissette's, but not in an attractive way.

Fortunately the album picks up its pace with the appealing "Our Solemn Hour," which will surely win over a live audience. The strangest track of the album, the title track, follows, which marks the biggest departure for Sharon - entirely abandoning her falsetto roots for a deeper, grungier vocal. And this time their experimentation worked. "Hand of Sorrow" revisits the older days of WT, sounding closer to Mother Earth-era writing than anything else.

Another favorite, "The Cross," benefits from a well-rounded chorus and better-than-average lyrics, while "Final Destination," a slightly less memorable but altogether decent track should please fans. "All I Need" is the second ballad from the album (they usually come in threes), and while not their finest ballad to date, still surpasses "Frozen." "The Truth Beneath the Rose," the longest track of the album is a success - combining a beautiful symphonic intro with reflective lyrics that may or may not have been inspired by the Beauty of the Beast. Our third ballad, "Forgiven," is also a winner, stripped down to a keyboard and Sharon's beautiful vocals that will send chills down your spine.

Overall, I think this was a very good buy. It doesn't look like the band will surpass their magnum opus, 2000's Mother Earth, but that doesn't mean they'll stop putting out other great albums for their fans. While there are a couple misses, the majority of the songs here are hits and I hope any Americans with taste in music will make the wise decision to buy this CD when it's released domestically in July.

Highlights: The Howling, The Heart of Everything, Hand of Sorrow, The Cross, The Truth Beneath the Rose, Forgiven

Originally reviewed on April 30. Here's hoping more American fans will check out this great band, and hopefully dig into their back catalog as well. :)

4 out of 5 stars this sound done right.......2007-07-27

"The Heart of Everything" is Within Temptation's first attempt at conquering the U.S. While I have had it with this genre (which, I would like to add, is not "goth") in general, it is bands - and albums - like this that keep me from writing all of these Sarah Brightman metal bands off. This is, simply put, a solid piece of work and likely to find its way onto my best-of list at the end of the year. Many have said that they are disappointed that WT has streamlined their sound into a more commercial direction, but in my opinion, this direction works for them. The songs are immediately catchy (I'll even admit it: I like "What Have You Done"), without being inane. This is obviously being pushed to the Evanescence crowd, but frankly this band is better. Hopefully WT won't be too late to the table. And as much as I like "The Hear tof Everything," here is a similar album that I like even better: After Forever. Better yet, buy them both and strike a blow against wretched post-grunge.

5 out of 5 stars Album of the year!.......2007-07-26

Within Temptations's 4th album has finally been released in America (it was released in Europe since March). This album is incredible from start to finish. Songs like Frozen, Forgiven, Hand Of Sorrow, and the title track showcases Sharon's beautiful operatic voice backed by heavy guitars, strings, and choirs, which makes the songs very epic. They will be headlining their first US tour in September so make sure to check them out. If you like Evanescence or Nightwish, you'll love Within Temptation.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-07-26

This CD is astonishing, which is to be expected from an incredible band like Within Temptation. They've been huge in Europe for almost a decade, and it's about time they made it to America. The Heart of Everything exemplifies everything the band has worked toward since 1998. It is huge, epic, intense, beautiful, and spellbinding...pretty much everything you look for in a CD. The songs do not get tiresome even after dozens of listens (which I have done, believe me). And Sharon den Adel has the voice of an angel.

If you are a fan of Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, or any other music featuring a gorgeous female voice featured against music that rocks, buy this now. You may simply listen to it, awed by its beauty (like during the ballad "Forgiven"). But do not be ashamed if you find yourself rocking out to it with your speakers turned up as loud as they go (especially on "The Howling" and "The Heart of Everything"). Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Three good songs.......2007-05-17

My wife wanted this collection after seeing it on a TV commercial. There are only about three good songs on this entire collection. Amazing Love is the best followed by open the eyes of my heart and the third I cannot think of right now. I would just buy the good ones from itunes.

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars "I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08

Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!

I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.

Acoustic balladry exquisitely arranged highlights the first album from Linda Thompson in five years (and only her second in 22). With even much of the original material steeped in English traditionalism, the album recalls the best of her early work with former husband Richard, though the romantic recriminations of the title track and "Go Home" showcase a songwriter who has very much found her own voice. Her key collaborator is son Teddy, who cowrote four songs with Linda as well as the instrumental that opens and closes the album. Daughter Kamila Thompson contributes "Nice Cars," perhaps the most contemporary-sounding track, as well as harmonies on a stripped-down rendition of "Day After Tomorrow" by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. Perhaps the most striking track is "Beauty," written for Thompson by Rufus Wainwright, with chamber strings, a bluesy undercurrent, and tremulous harmony vocals by Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons). Thompson doesn't release many albums, but she has never crafted a more cohesive and consistently inspired one than this. --Don McLeese

    Album Description

Superlatives fail to justly describe the voice of Linda Thompson. Steely yet vulnerable, comforting yet haunting, Thompson's singing is never less than riveting, and has played a crucial role in some of the most powerful, influential music of the past thirty years. On Versatile Heart, only her third solo album, Thompson demonstrates that, in addition to being an incomparable interpreter, she is an equally astonishing songwriter - stitching traditional British Isles music and more contemporary influences into a sound that is expressive and direct, yet timeless. From the brass-flecked acoustic pop of the title track to the cool rockabilly of "Do Your Best for Rock 'n Roll," her writing forms the core of Versatile Heart. Other writers represented on Versatile Heart include Thompson's son Teddy, daughter Kamila, Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, and Rufus Wainwright, who contributes the devastating "Beauty," performed as a duet with Antony.

Featuring Teddy Thompson, Antony, Martin Carthy, Martha Wainwright, Kamila Thompson, Eliza Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, and more. "One of rock & roll's finest voices..."-Rolling Stone "One of the loveliest, most dramatic voices in the English language..."-No Depression

    Album Description

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08

This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.

    4 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08

Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!

    4 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2007-05-14

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

4 out of 5 stars Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

4 out of 5 stars Go Back To Silent Force.......2007-07-19

While I will admit it did disappoint me, if giving a chance this CD still rises above a lot of the other filth people are putting out these days (Evanesces to name one, even at her worse on this CD Sharon Den Adel still sings circles around Amy Lee (if you could sing in circles anyways)). The Howling was amazing a good start for the CD but then What Have You Done lays the disappointment on thick. I have noticed a lot of people don't like Frozen but personally I think it is a great song. Our Solem Hour is more reminiscent of Silent Force and all in all a good song. Heart Of Everything is also a great song and Cross is also good the rest is very medium to low quality when compared to Silent Force. Most of the time it failed to catch my attention. Still the CD grows on me so maybe one day I will love the CD but never will it surpass the greatness of Silent Force or the beauty of Mother Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Within Temptation keeps getting better.......2007-07-16

This CD is great! Each CD Within Temptation releasese gets better and better. I discovered this group with their 2nd album The Silent Force and really loved it. This CD even exceeded my expectations.

    4 out of 5 stars A solid effort.......2007-07-15

I've been a fan of Within Temptation since I heard the amazing song "Angels" from their 2004 CD "The Silent Force." "The Heart of Everything," the Dutch metal band's fourth CD, shows definite progression while going into harder territory. This will be their first CD officially released in the U.S. and it does seem that the material is tailored a little more to American tastes than their previous works. That, however, is not necessarily a bad thing.

The focus of Within Temptation has always been lead singer Sharon den Adel. A natural untrained soprano who can sound amazingly like Kate Bush minus the screeching, Sharon still brings the angelic etherealness that is her trademark but shows off her lower range as well, particularly on "The Howling," "Final Destination" and "Our Solemn Hour," all of which stomp in the best possible way. I still don't quite understand why so many people believe that the first single "What Have You Done" sounds like Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life." It's true that the song is much more "commercial" than what WT usually does (although I still believe that "Angels" could have been a monster hit in America had it been marketed right) and both songs are essentially male/female duets, but the two songs sound nothing alike. If there is an Evanescence-like moment on the CD it's the closing song "Forgiven", which REALLY sounds like "My Immortal" both musically and lyrically. It's still a beautiful song, as is "Frozen," which in spite of a horribly overwrought video also has real American single potential. "The Heart of Everything" isn't perfect--the plodding "The Truth Beneath The Rose" and "All I Need" drag things down--but it's still one of the better CDs I've heard this year. WT got their first real U.S. exposure opening for Lacuna Coil this spring, but I have a feeling we're going to start seeing a lot more of them.

    5 out of 5 stars Italian Amercans--a must buy.......2007-07-28

As an USAF Air Attaché, I played this music at many a dinner party with a surprising amount of interest and positive comments from my foreign colleagues--often asking for copies of the music.

As a child of the 60's, these songs resurrected long-lost memories of great Italian music that was at one-time almost prevalent in the entertainment industry. I am proud that our culture produced these great songs, hope you are too! I still often listen to this music at dinner while enjoying a glass of great Italian wine.

This is more cafe style but still worth listening to.
    Great dinner background music.

2 out of 5 stars This CD will put you to sleep.......2007-02-26

We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).

While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.

Could have gone to the library for this one.

Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.
