Customer Reviews:
A lovely collection! Soothing renditions of classic Irish tunes.......2006-09-30
"Celtic Treasure" is an elegant, engaging tribute to the work of someone who was, and still is, a "Celtic Treasure" himself: Turlough O'Carolan, the blind, itinerant harper from Baroque-era Ireland who's considered to be Ireland's first national composer. Narada has brought together a collection instrumental recordings from various artists who share a gentleness of spirit and wistfulness of soul, each presenting a one of O'Carolan's compositions in a fitting, original arrangement. Artists featured include Deanta, Orion, Shelley Phillips, Dordan, William Coulter and John Whelan, and the instruments used are generally Celtic harp, whistle, acoustic guitar, accordion, cello and piano. O'Carolan (whose name, did you know, is more properly spelled "Toirdhealbhach O Cearbhallain"?) left a legacy of some 200 surviving tunes that bridge the gap between folk music and art-songs, enchanting his wealthy patrons as much as listeners today. Earl Hitchner, Celtic music expert, sums up the impact of O'Carolan's legacy in his liner notes: "[O'Carolan was] someone who never set foot outside his homeland, yet produced music of transporting grace and radiance destined to touch every corner of the earth." Couldn't say it any better! For more laid back Celtic music try anything from the Maggie's Music label, and also Narada's "Celtic Treasure II," which is a bit livelier than "Celtic Treasure I." The groups Orion and Deanta (both featured on this album (in tracks #2 and #3 respectively) have excellent solo albums as well.
magnificent Celtic music!!.......2006-06-07
Though I have listened to quite a bit of Celtic music and really love bagpipes, this introduction to "The Legacy of Turlough O'Carolan" has captivated my entire being. There are melodies which have me up on my feet dancing to the tune of quiet waltzes (Si Bheag, Si Mhor by William Coulter; Captain O'Kane by Seamus McGuire) or either attempting some type of jig! My all time favorite is "Lord Inchiquin" performed by Deiseal. This is a fascinating and fun piece of music that transports me back to the 17th century to join others in a spirited dance at some outdoor festival! Marvelous!! Additionally, the biography supplied giving details of O'Carolan's life is inspiring considering what would seem like an insurmountable physical limitation - blindness! Buy a copy of this CD! Enjoy!!
Wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable.......2005-10-10
This was my first exposure to O'Carolan's music and it was a superb experience. It is hard to believe he lived in the sixteen hundreds. His music is beautiful and relevant. I would strongly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys lovely folk music. Squire Parsons/James Betagh is my absolute favorite arrangement and I could and do listen to it everyday.
True Celtic Grace.......2003-11-12
Many of the other Celtic albums that make their way to my CD player have modernized influences and characteristics. This release has been the most true to this wonderfully soothing genre. Everyone should give it a try.
Definitely something you should hear........2003-04-01
I bought this CD about 3 months ago and I listen to it everyday while at work. It is the most soothing yet exciting selection of music that you could imagine. I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Celtic music. Or just enjoy's sitting down and day dreaming of a far away magical place. I am always day dreaming of a green field with tree's blowing in the wind when I listen to the song "Captain O'Kane".

Customer Reviews:
More O'Carolan tunes from Narada, sparkling and elegant.......2006-09-30
"Celtic Treasure II" picks up where "Celtic Treasure" left off two years earlier, offering more renditions of Turlough O'Carolan's classic compositions by a variety of artists, including Kim Robertson, Pat Kilbride, Shelley Phillips, Dordan, John Whelan and Sue Richards. The overall tone of this album seems a little brighter and livelier than its mellow predecessor, but there are no driving drum beats and the polished elegance of Narada releases still prevails throughout. Except for Kim Robertson's whispery, wordless vocals, the selections are once again all instrumentals, featuring harp, whistle, flute, acoustic guitar, fiddle, piano and accordion. "Celtic Treasure II" continues Narada's engaging tribute to the work of Turlough O'Carolan, the blind, itinerant harper from 17th/18th century Ireland who was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach. Embraced by wealthy patrons but never a true virtuoso on the harp, O'Carolan was encouraged to begin composing instead of merely performing, and thus he discovered his true calling. He's considered to be Ireland's first national composer, blending folk music and Baroque-era art songs\ into a style all his own, and leaving a legacy of over 200 surviving tunes that remain as popular today as in his own time. For more Celtic music, try Narada's other Celtic releases, such as the gutsy "Brave Hearts" and the more laid back "Celtic Odyssey," and anything from the Green Linnett label. I'm sure all the artists on this compilation have fine offerings of their own as well. Ones I'm familiar with include the wonderfully innovative Celtic/New Age fusion of harper Kim Robertson, and the classical/Celtic fusion of harper Sue Richards with Ensemble Galilei.
Gorgeous.......2000-09-08
This CD is absolutely incredible. A great sequel. Celtic Treasure I was, and still is, my favorite CD. This disc is a contination of the magic that has been captured 300 years after it was written. O'Carolan is about the best composer that ever lived, it is about time that someone compiled some of his best works. I listen to this CD nearly every day. I find it very relaxing. My mind is constantly bombarded with images of rolling greens and Irish rain when listening to this CD. A truly beautiful compilation of music that flow and work very well with each other.
These tunes are truly the sounds of Ireland.......1998-10-12
I have listened to these fine tunes of Ireland and must say that I have become a fan of this band. I enjoy the sounds of Celtic Music and appreciate these fine artists. Continue to amaze me wherever you are.
