Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquility, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that should long be cherished by admirers of film music and hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The music is good but the movie is better.......2007-04-10
I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.
A grand sountrack..........2007-01-10
One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.
Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08
Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.
Awe inspiring!.......2006-10-02
What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."
It is the best of the three CDs!!!.......2006-09-10
For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

This three disc set of American orchestral masterpieces brings several works into the CD catalog for the first time. Recorded in the 60s by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Karl Krueger, these path-breaking recordings, originally done for the Society for the Preservation of the American Musical Heritage, have been lovingly re-mastered by Grammy winning Engineer/Producer Adam Abeshouse. Edward MacDowell's `Indian' Suite is the composer's most substantial orchestral composition and is accompanied by the composer's rarely heard Suite No. 1. "Vathek" is one of Horatio Parker's two symphonic poems. Parker based this composition on a work of fabulous excess and immorality, the early Gothic picaresque, "The History of the Caliph Vathek" by the eccentric millionaire intellectual, novelist and travel writer William Beckford (1759-1844). Victor Herbert's orchestral masterpiece, "Hero and Leander", was fated to remain unpublished during the composer's lifetime. It is given an opulent reading by Krueger and his British forces. Arthur Farwell's "The Gods of the Mountain" is music of great exoticism and originality. Though a suite taken from incidental! music for a play by Lord Dunsany, the work feels like a short symphony with echoes and presages of motifs from each of the movements serving to bind the work together with great unity of design. Henry Hadley's rarely heard Second Symphony of 1901 was awarded two prizes and may justly be called one of the first successful American symphonies. "Salome" was one of Hadley's favorites among his own compositions, and was written after he had seen a production of Oscar Wilde's sensational and decadent play.
These Royal Philharmonic, Karl Krueger titles are also available on Bridge: Edward MacDowell: The Complete Tone Poems; BRIDGE 9089 William Grant Still: Afro-American Symphony; Amy Beach: "Gaelic" Symphony BRIDGE 9086

Album Description
This CD presents a tribute to Thea Musgrave on the occasion of her 75th birthday. While a scholarship student of Nadia Boulanger, Scottish-born Musgrave was the winner of the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize, and has since gone on to win numerous awards and honors. Her works have been widely performed in Britain, Europe and the USA. Musgrave is active as a conductor of her own music, and has worked with most of the major British and American orchestras. The New York Virtuoso Singers, arguably America's finest `new music' chorus, are heard in this loving tribute to Musgrave. The CD opens with a major Musgrave work-the 26 minute long "For the Time Being: Advent", based on W.H. Auden's poem "For the Time Being" (pub. 1945), a work of self-questioning in time of war and at a time of loss. This work is a tour de force, not only for its huge variety of vocal textures, but also for the manner in which Musgrave sustains, over its entire length, the sombre intensity of Auden's vision. British film star Michael York is the narrator on this recording. "Black Tambourine", on six poems of Hart Crane, is performed as a continuous 18 minute span. The cycle captures the wide range of moods of the poetry, from the madrigal-like trio of `Pastoral' to the tinkling salon piano of "My Grandmother's Love Letters". The CD also includes three delightful cycles taken from the anthology "Poems on the Underground"-a series of madrigal-like works setting poems that were exhibited in the trains of the London Underground.

Customer Reviews:
Recording Quality Sub Par compared to the Dallas Wind Symphony recording.......2006-05-18
The interpretation and recording quality is "collegiate" compared to the DWS's. This is so in much the same way that the Eastman Merury recordings of the 50's and 60's aren't. They set a new standard for both. That's the best way to put it without too long a dissertation. I don't mean it in a negative way but it sounds a lot like any one of the performances of about ten or fifteen other College Wind Ensembles I can think of.
The DWS recording is the must have version if you must choose. It's a standout in recording quality and interpretation.
It's for these reasons that you can find so many of Reference's CD's on The Absolute Sound's" top CD list.
Just be careful. It has ruined many high end stereo amps and speakers by guileless owners who underestimate the dynamics that lie within!
I have both and glad I have them. I just wouldn't put the Cincinatti first over all others!
Incredible wind band music .......2005-11-02
This recording is perhaps one of the best wind band recordings I have ever heard. Gene Corporon and the Cincinatti Wind Symphony are spectacular. Their take on La Fiesta Mexicana is definitely the best recording I have ever heard of that piece.

Close to the Heart - "We Are All One".......1999-10-27
Several years ago, I purchased David Lanz's "Bridge of Dreams" CD. It soothed me so that I went out and bought the book of its piano arrangement. I have absorbed this music through both listening and performing it in solitude reflection.
There are two songs with lyrics on this album. They are "Song of the East - We are One" and "Whispered in Signs.". The lyrics of the second, "Whispered in Signs" have just, after all this time, come to me. They ring of "remembering" that which we already know, and it's all that we need ... "right now." The mode of the music itself is relative to the Traditional American Indian in its rhythms and chanting motif as it whispers to "Listen to the Sound ...."
I have purchased this album as a gift to my new friend, as it is part of the circle that I am. In sharing the peace I find in this music, I celebrate with new friends the spirit that "We Are All Related" . . . We Are All One.
If you are reading this review, then you are my friend, and in this, I give you this music to soothe you when your life is too cluttered with the world. Let it all go, and listen to the simplicity . . . the pure simplicity of the soothing phrases offered through David Lanz's voice and special gift of whispered signs.
Great music........1999-07-24
I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this; this is some of Lanz's best work. It combines the energy of Skyline Firedance with some of the more introspective and quiet qualities of his other works. And yes, there are two vocal tracks, which are kind of unfortunate. Actually, he's not a particularly bad singer; he's just not a good one, either. The lyrics distract from the music, which would have told his story better than words ever could. In any case, the alternately soft an angry She Stands on the Mountain, Still is my all-time David Lanz favorite. The bright, flowing Bridge of Dreams, the melancholy processional feel of Veil of Tears, and the mournful melody with spots of brightness in Ode to a Dark Star are examples of some of the best David Lanz music out there. The only ones I didn't like much were A Day in the Life (I like the Beatles' tune, but I believe in letting well enough alone) and And the World Falls Away. If you like the works of David Lanz and Paul Speer, this is essential.

Album Description
Songs of Grechaninov (BRIDGE 9142), with soprano Georgine Resick accompanied by pianist Warren Jones.
This disc presents thirty-three songs by the Russian born Aleksandr Grechaninov (1864-1956). The performances (sung in Russian) sample a broad range of Grechaninov's work, from children's songs (Snowflakes) to the Russian National School; and from Impressionist/Symbolist influenced works to songs based on Folk texts. Georgine Resick is a protegée of the late George London. Renowned for her Mozart and Strauss interpretations, she has sung a wide variety of leading roles with the Vienna State Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Paris Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera. Warren Jones has been the distinguished accompanist for Marilyn Horne, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Kathleen Battle, and many other leading vocalists of our time.
