Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08
Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.
Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01
Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.
True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18
If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.
lovely!.......2006-09-07
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.
WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01
What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19
I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.
FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28
The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

Not Just Another Pretty Face.......2005-12-02
Recently, I read a small spot in a magazine about Eric Himan. My first reaction was to dismiss him as another one of today's "all about appearance, no substance" artists. Then my "inner voice" said, "give the guy a chance". Always listen to your inner voice. Eric Himan is one of a new generation of singer-songwriters who have broke free of the corporate chains that bind much of today's popular music in a prison of mediocrity. He is far more substance then appearance.
To call him a new artist would be wrong. "Dark Horse" is his forth release, but is the first of his albums that has a real studio feel to it. It is also his first release to include a cover song, a beautiful rendition of Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years". The rest of Dark Horse is all original material, and what prodigious material it is.
While his earlier albums are excellent, they are stripped down productions that rely on Eric's soulful voice and vibrant guitar playing for the backbone of their sound. The production on Dark Horse is rich and lush without being over produced. There are also a greater variety of styles on this album.
The country twang of "White Horse" is great. Every time I hear this song, I picture it being played in a conservative western bar with the progressive play on sexuality in the lyrics going right over the heads of the oblivious toe tapping patrons. "Brown Fog" is a tender, heart-rending, soul-searching ballad that has the jazzy feel of a late night barroom. You can almost see the smoke in the air. Needles to say, "until the music stops, I will listen".
Edgy rocker sound with a whole lotta soul.......2005-11-21
My first impulse is to compare Eric Himan to Gavin DeGraw but that would be because I heard the latter first. Of course, this talented singer/songwriter/musician has quite a few pegs of raw talent over the young and equally handsome DeGraw. Himan has a voice that is a whole lot grittier and as he wraps his vocals around his lyrics, the listener is drawn in with hardly any resistance. His unconventional sound only makes every song he sings more fresh and more appealing. Even with Dark Horse, a more blatant attempt at mainstream than any of his previous efforts, his sound remains distinct and refreshing. Even though he is an openly gay artist, don't expect to hear blatant songs about man on man action... most of the songs could be about anyone which should add to his overall appeal. He does touch up on gay issues but ever so slightly on this album... not as obvious as he did with "My Decision", his blazing retort to Date Rape.
Opening with "Habit/Curse" is a great way to begin a journey of musical landscapes enlivened by rich and engrossing lyrics. The song is about realising that sometimes what you want and need are not the best things for you. "Have Me" is undeniably upbeat and catchy, drawing you in from the first instant to the last chord. It even features that rare instrumental break (most of the songs here do, actually). "Clyde" is a haunting piano driven tune with Himan trying a honeysuckle approach to singing which adds to the charm. "White Horse" is catchy and fun... an upbeat jem that has a folky sound to it. "Holding Back the Years" is cover that is stunningly well delivered and a perfect choice to go with Himan's stunning voice. When he sings those words, it is hard to not feel where he is comming from. "Aimlessness" is one of my favorite tracks on the album despite it being a bit short. It has a midtempo rock appeal to it and the lyrics are true. (If you don't know what you're looking for/how you ever gonna find it?) "Stranded" is a slow, R&B tinged song that talks about moving on and growing... it is a saddened song of hope. "Listen" is another piano driven ballad that is quite pretty and his smokey voice highlights this beauty. "Throw Away the Past" is close to being a modern pop rocker but it is one that outshines the competition with its true to life and personal lyrics. "In the Brown Fog" is a near accapella number backed with subtle guitar chords and it is a stripped down song of beauty complete with his deeper than others lyrics. And something to rejoice about... there is a hidden bonus track that is unnamed but hardly unmentionable. It is the rockiest song on the album and it could have easily served as the opening number as it is equally engaging as "Habit/Curse", yet it serves a deliciously crafted purpose as the ending... it leaves the listener wanting more.
Eric Himan may not be a popular musician enriched with the frothy sounds or Good Charlotte, britney Spears, or Gavin DeGraw, but he deserves to be a big time artist. His skill transends the genre of "independent" and it would be a blessing to the ever-stale state of the mainstream music world. This album is worth the price... and it is worth the time invested to listen. Go for it... give Eric Himan a try.
A "must have" for any CD collection.......2005-08-18
I like every kind of music, from pop to classical to rock to blues... and yes, even country. I can appreciate a good song, regardless of the genre. This CD, though, slides across genres, refusing to fall into a single style. The one constant is Eric's passion. It's in the lyrics, the music, and the voice. This guy is more than a singer. He is an incredible entertainer. (I have seen him twice, and will definitely see him again.)
Specifically on this CD, his songwriting is witty, clever, and personal. The opening track describes the one-up, one-down of a relationship, saying "if I'm your habit, you're my curse." And the plea to be seen as he is now, for good or bad, is eloquently played out in "Throw away the past."
Buy this CD. And don't let it out of your sight. Friends will borrow it, and you will never see it again!
GrownUpMusic.com recommended!.......2005-06-27
With a voice like Cat Stevens, inked arms a la Tommy Lee and a guitar style akin to fellow indie artist Ani DeFranco, Eric Himan is an angry young man on a mission. Perhaps "angry" is a bit strong, since he only strums like an angry young man in stark contrast to his deeply personal and vulnerable lyrics. But if you're looking for an original voice in the latest crop of 20something schlocksters, Himan is your man. He rocks. He rockabillies. But perhaps the most poignant moment on Himan's new record is his only cover: the Simply Red soul ballad "Holding Back the Years," which - in his skillful hands and simple production - breathes new life into the hauntingly beautiful classic. Himan is like the stray junk yard dog you want to adopt. He's scrappy on the outside, gentle on the inside, and ultimately irresistable.
One of my favorite singers right now.......2005-06-18
I read an article about Eric and he seemed very interesting. He had a good attitude and seemed very intelligent. I looked him up on i-tunes and ended up buying his stuff. When I heard Dark Horse was coming out I was pretty happy. I live in Los Angeles and looked everywhere for his CD. Just buy it from Amazon. I never found it in the stores. Was it worth it? Yes. Eric has a really unique voice and I mean that literally. It is just different. His songs are so true to people emotions. I love finding new artists and spreading them around to people. You can only listen to Britney so many times without needing to find some quality. His music is kind of dark in places and the genres run from blues to rock. Great stuff. I can't wait to see him in concert.

Any doubts that Finnish singer Karita Mattila--fresh from her triumph in the Met's new production of Fidelio in the 2000-2001 season--has moved from the top ranks of today's sopranos into the rarefied aura of full-fledged diva status are dispelled by this remarkable disc capturing her in full flight at a concert in Helsinki. She opens with an ecstatic "Dich teure Halle" from Tannhäuser, follows with a sinuous Dvorák "Song to the Moon" from Rusalka, moves on to satisfying Verdi and Puccini arias, then launches into three delectable arias from Strauss's Die Fledermaus, in which she perfectly portrays three characters of wildly different voice types: Orlofsky, Adele, and Rosalinde. As if that wasn't enough, Mattila then lavishes her gorgeous soprano on a group of Finnish songs, does a convincing version of a Marlene Dietrich classic, and finishes with an idiomatic "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and a bluesy "Summertime." It's hard to think of another soprano who could tackle a program this varied or sing it as well. Throughout, Mattila beautifully characterizes each piece and sounds as if she's having a great time. So are we. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
strangely disappointing in Verdi.......2006-03-14
On the whole, this is an enjoyable live recital. Mattila opens with a very plugged-in, alive delivery of the Hall of Song aria from Tannhauser. I hope she records this in the studio, if she has not already done so.
Unfortunately, though her best roles include Amelia from Simon Boccanegra, she doesn't excel in the arias from Aida and La Forza. Ritorna Vincitor fares the worst. Her pacing is schizophrenic, her pronunciation of the vowels rather odd. Instead of choosing such a "heroic" Verdi aria, she should have turned to something more lyrical. Something from Un Ballo in Maschera, perhaps?
Pace, Pace Mio Dio fares better, though marginally. Mattila makes the most out of the lyrics, drawing much from the text, even better than some revered artists from the fifties and sixties. Her urgent singing of "fatalita" will rankle the purists. I, for one, welcome something more than mindless floating and note-spinning, a la Zinka Milanov. Karita's ability to draw even more from the text than native speakers reminds me of Edita Gruberova. However, like Gruberova, such passioned delivery comes at the expense of some covered notes and laborious approach.
Things improve dramatically with the three arias from Die Fledermaus. Most enchanting is Mein Herr Marquis. Mattila proves herself to be a ravishing coquette in this delicious interpretation. She even makes an honest-to-goodness stab at the coloratura, acquitting herself quite well, given that she is a lyric soprano.
Of the Finnish songs, the first one, The Tryst, is the best. Then, near the end, we are treated to some lighter fare. Her hommage to two other blonde sirens, Dietrich and Monroe, is spot-on. Falling in Love is my favorite of the two, with Mattila showing off a very convincing lower register.
Now, I couldn't get through Summertime with the guitar accompaniment. Still, there are enough tasty morsels in this recital to whet the appetite.
Live wire.......2005-09-26
Karita Mattila has more vocal brilliance & stamina and dramatic spunk than just about any other soprano singing today and I first became aware of that when listening to this collection.
Her technique is perfect, and she has lungs of steel- not that she cannot drop the opera hat in a second and adopt a cabaret persona, as aptly demonstrated here.
That she is drop dead gorgeous, and a great actress, doesn't hurt either, but this is an audio CD and opera recital first, and she has the goods, in spades, when it comes to hardcore opera repertoire.
And what a selection it is- soaring Wagner, full blooded Verdi, fantastic Tosca, a beautiful, lyrical Song to the Moon, the three heroines from Fliedermaus- each different and absolutely spot on- plus Finnish songs and some old fashion diva selections- Marilyn Monroe's and Marlene Dietrich's songs, and for finish, Summertime. This list is as crazy as it gets, and yet somehow everything works- and how! The word sparkling is often to use to describe singing of fluffy coloratura sopranos, but that would apply- there's a sort of electrical buzz that Mattila creates: every song is exciting, utterly absorbing. This is a recording of one fully-fledged diva in a great live performance.
Contemplative performances from Karita Mattila.......2001-11-01
I love live recordings. I first became aware of this music several months ago. I listen to this CD quite a bit at home and in the car. I really relish her performances. And then there is Wagner's music!
Mattila superb in Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner!.......2000-12-03
A friend of mine sent this CD for me, and I was stunned. There are great Verdi singers in the world after all! The opera arias are all outstanding, packed with emotion, sung in resplendent tone and perfect technique (portamento, legato line, strong chest voice). My favourites on this disc are hauntingly beautiful Rusalka's aria, "Pace, pace, mio Dio" from Forza, and Elisabeth's greeting from Tannhäuser. Operetta pieces are wonderful. I don't care that much about the lighter department, but she certainly shows her versatility. Marlene Dietrich song (from Blue Angel) is more succesful than the Marilyn one.
This is a must have for every opera lover! IMO she is the most exciting opera personality in the world today. BTW - the CD program in here looks strange, my copy does not include Elsa's dream (I wish it would) or Edith Piaf song. I became a fan of her after seeing her as Manon Lescaut (I wish she would record "Sola, perduta, abbandonata" someday).
Interesting Recital.......2000-11-27
The CD is a live recording from a concert Karita Mattila gave here in Helsinki. I did not get a ticket, but listened the concert on the radio (Mattila is accompanied by Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra). She was almost tireless, singing for over three hours (no guest artists).
The programme was interesting. I would love to hear Mattila as Elisabeth, Leonora or Aida, because she sings their arias beautifully. Her lyric but strong voice suits Verdi and "lighter Wagner" very well, I think. Vissi d'arte was also very good; Tosca would be a perfect role for a diva like Mattila. She sang Musetta's waltz in the concert, but it has not found it's way on the recording. The Fledermaus arias show the artist's versatility and make it clear that Mattila likes to sing operetta.
Mattila is generally better suited to opera than lied, but in Finnish music she is excellent - my personal favorite is "Flickan kom ifrån sing älsklings möte" by Sibelius. The "lighter" music is not that successfull, and I wonder why trained opera singers are so enthusiastic in performing and recording music that obviously does not fit their voices. Mattila imitated Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn in the concert, which was quite fun, but not to my liking. In addition, Mattila's encore was "Summertime" (included in the recording), a song she obviously likes very much, but sings less successfully. I think she should stick to classical music.
In summary, I recommend this recital for the opera arias and the finnish songs.
