5 out of 5 stars Best Music Ever for Home Wedding.......2007-07-20

The tape consists of 25 traditional wedding songs played by big orchestras; the music was beautiful and made a small ceremony into a special, unforgettable ceremony.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for wedding planners.......2007-04-05

I work regularly with people planning church weddings who want the service to be dignified, traditional and formal. Often they have "ear memory" of music they've heard in other weddings, but no idea about its composer or title. This CD is the best compilation I've found of music that fits those requirements. Selections include great music and performances make it easy to imagine how they would sound in a particular church or other setting. Includes works by Protestant, Catholic and secular composers.

Great CD! Perfect when planning your wedding music. There are a variety of songs from various composers.

This CD was inexpensive, and provided a great way to preview songs for my wedding. The CD had a good song selection. My fiance and I were able to get a better idea of how the songs would be at our wedding. Definitely an inexpensive tool that is worthwhile.

My daughter had to move her wedding 3 weeks before the event and the music she had arranged could not be there. I purchased this CD and we were thrilled with the price, the selections on the cd and how quickly it arrived. Thanks for providing the music for a beautiful wedding.

The Godfather saga may have its roots in pulp fiction, but the vision of director Francis Ford Coppola turned the story of Don Vito Corleone into an epic, multigenerational metaphor for modern American society and its place in the world. Coppola's musical choices were equally sage; aged Italian scoring legend Nino Rota's mournful solo trumpet theme ("Godfather Waltz") would become both a crucial, emotional link in all three films and an enduring modern icon on a par with the themes to Star Wars and Jaws.

This compendium gathers key themes from the Godfather trilogy in modern rerecordings, by conductor Paul Bateman and the Prague Philharmonic, that are sonically pristine and faithful to the originals. Utilizing the rich musical heritage of his native Italy (and occasionally evoking memories of his great collaborations with Fellini), Rota's Godfather music would ultimately net him his only Oscar ®, for Godfather II. Carmine Coppola, the director's father, supplements Rota's work with music that's more distinctly ethnic, while the prelude from Italian classical composer Pietro Mascagani's masterful opera Cavalleria Rusticana becomes a crucial element in Godfather III, filling the void left by Rota's passing in 1979. --Jerry McCulley

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Noticeably different from the original soundtrack, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic........2006-11-10

When I first reading the reviews to this Soundtrack collection, I was a bit skeptical, as I read many reviews which mentioned the differences among this collection and the original soundtracks. Being a huge fan of the films and their music, I was a bit nervous about my purchase, but figured how bad could it sound? It's the Godfather!

However, when I got the CD in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised. While I did notice some differences (Tarantella sounds somewhat changed) between the Collection songs and the original analogs, they were not a change for worse. These tracks produced the same, if not greater emotional response than those from the films.

Listening to the whole soundtrack is a great experience from beginning to end for fans of the films and their music, and I absolutely praise the Prague Philharmonic orchestra, Crouch End Festival Chorus, and conductor Paul Bateman for their excellent transition of the original work into this 30th Anniversary collection.

If you like the music from the films, get this disc!

4 out of 5 stars pensieri da Staciella.......2004-06-29

2 out of 5 stars Do not confuse music you love with rendition you won't.......2003-11-11

I would not like to repeat what another reviewer said there: this is no original soundtrack. It is a very professional - and very uninspired - job by Prague Philarmonic who might have followed the music sheet but they lost the magic.

Yes, the tunes are memorable and, right from the first movements, they evoke the ghosts of complex cinematic imagery that are so deeply ingrained in the mind of anyone who loves this film. But the magic is gone. You know it's not THE soundtrack, and you've heard the real thing so many times.

The truth is that if you had Pavarotti to sing classic songs of The Rolling Stones, you would be disappointed with the result - despite the fact that Luciano has a much better voice than Mick Jagger.

Those artists who recorded the original soundtrack 30 years ago in Hollywood - and who remembers their names today? - were probably not as accomplished as the Prague Philarmonic. But they created the real thing, and therefore this cover disc will forever be no more than nice background music. That's all I use it for.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Quality.......2003-07-15

I bought this after watching the movies for the first time, and listened to it, without noticing any difference. I just went, "what an amazing remastering job", then I saw that they were re-recorded. I never thought there was that big a difference when watching the movies over and over, and I really scrutinize re-recordings generally(like those done for Star Wars).

I bought the regular Godfather 1 cd after this, and I've hardly touched it since I bought it. I think this Godfather Trilogy is far superior in audio quality and performance. I think it has more feeling then the originals.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing performance of classic Godfather music..........2003-01-09

I am a die-hard Godfather afficianado and I was terribly disappointed in this CD. When I purchased it, I didn't realize it was not a recording of the original soundtrack from the movie. Instead, it is a reproduction of the songs by The City of Prague Philharmonic. The performance is technically accurate, but does not at *all* convey the emotion of the movie's moments. It's as if the musicians studied the score, but never saw the movie. In track after track, the rhythms are not quite right, the mood is not set, etc, which is jarring for someone who knows the movies well. If you just want to hear some pleasing music, buy this CD. If you intend to buy a CD of The Godfather soundtrack in order to re-experience the magic of the Godfather movies themselves, look elsewhere.

Bruno Walter was always a most persuasive advocate of the gentler Beethoven--at least, that's what everyone thought until his stereo Beethoven cycle was remastered onto CD, revealing a much stronger musical profile than had been suspected. But that just made the cycle's best performances sound better still--and here they are, together on one midpriced CD! It's amazing that a man in his 80s, as Walter was when these performances were recorded, could take what was essentially a pickup orchestra and turn in performances of such power and authority. Walter and the Columbia Symphony had a genuine chemistry between them--they play these two symphonies as if they had been making music together for years. --David Hurwitz

    Amazon.com

Bruno Walter recorded the Beethoven symphonies in stereo for Columbia in 1958-59, taping No. 9 in New York and Nos. 1-8 in Los Angeles with orchestras of freelance and studio musicians who rose magnificently to the occasion. Walter was in his eighties, but that didn't stop him from grabbing these works by the throat; there is no mincing around, no effusive lingering over phrases, and no ponderous trudging either. The even-numbered symphonies are sunny and outgoing, full of the warmth the conductor exuded during his Indian-summer years in the studio. Yet the drama of the odd-numbered works is not slighted. Walter's account of the Fifth, for example, is an intensely expressive one in which lyricism and thrust are in perfect balance--an evocation of stormy Romanticism at its best. The recordings have held up extremely well; the sound on these 20-bit CDs is spacious yet detailed, with amazing presence and solidity. --Ted Libbey

    5 out of 5 stars best Beethoven 4th I know of.......2007-05-13

This used to be paired with the 5th on Record.. probably the best of both. I love this 4th.

    4 out of 5 stars Beethoven 4th symphony.......2006-03-19

I was looking for the 4th specifically and happy with this recording. Entries are clear and tempos steady. Recommended

    5 out of 5 stars A charmed moment in Walter's late Beethoven.......2005-12-07

Both these recordings of the Beethoven Fourth and Sixth were made in Hollywood in 1958, the same time that Walter was turning in rather slack and unfocused readings of the other symphonies. Here he recovers some of the dash and intensity that marked his 1930s Pastorle with the Vienna Phil. The Columbia Sym. plays with energy and inflection, even though Walter's tempos are on the leisurely side.

As is generally acknowledged, he found magic in every movement of the Pastorale, which will surely stand as the best of the romantic versions of this symphony (far more charming than Bohm's often recommended but unsmiling recording on DG). The Fourth is in the same mode, with more incisiveness than his Eroica, Fifth, or Seventh. But Walter is somewhat less alert here; the result is another mellow performance of good if not superb quality.

Newcomers might suppose, hearing these performances, that the rest of Walter's Beethoven must be of equal stature. It's not, but we can be grateful for this charmed moment in his old age. Look to his Bruckner, Mozart, and Mahler for similar inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Bruno Walter's kindness shines through here........2005-08-16

Among the finest recordings of these famous symphonies, even after 45+ years since they were committed to tape. Bruno Walter did a terrific job of getting the Columbia Symphony Orchestra - many of them free lance musicians, studio musicians, and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic who were doing some work on the side - the play like a Viennese orchestra - very gemuchtlichkeit where it's called for. Bruno Walter's kindness shines through here; this is the loving, kind Beethoven, a reflection of the conductor and worlds apart from Reiner or Toscanini.

Tempos in both Symphonies 4 and 6 are slower in Allegro movements (I, III and IV for Symphony 4; I, III, IV and V for Symphony 6) than in Szell's recordings, for example, but slower tempos allow for better phrasing and articulation.

I am thankful Walter recorded these works in stereo when in his 80s. Sony Classical has done great service to music lovers everywhere by making this available.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent sixth!.......2004-02-13

You must have it. I mean, you cannot fulfill the world of the Beethoven's sixth without trying to listen to this performance. Here are gentle voices of birds. Also you can see water, trees with green leaves, and whatever you wish to see or hear when you think of nature.

Brono Walter recorded three versions of the symphony; with VPO in 1930s', the other orchestra in 1940s' and the performance in 1958 on this CD. In addition, this version alone is in stereo, the other two are in mono. Some say, however, the first one (with VPO) is the best, though it doesn't have good quality. I personally think you should have both; 1936 version and 1958 version.

As for the sixth, I also recommend Bohm with VPO. But in comparison in the last movement, Walter's is better, that's to say, Walter's performance on this CD is the best of all !

As far as I'm concerned, I would say the fourth is not bad. But it's not so good that I can't highly recommend this performance at all. You should have this CD for the sixth. That's all.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Baroque music..........2005-10-04

This CD contains a great sampling of Baroque music. Some of the best known songs of the period are included. Listeners will likely instantly recognize many of the songs (you've likely heard them before, you just didn't know their names). An excellent rendition of Pachelbel's Canon starts off the CD. Then plenty of music from big names such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi fill out the disc's 72 and a half minutes of music.

The demographics of this disc point to an intended mainstream audience. For example, the track listing includes references to which songs served as themes for television shows. For example, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 includes the byline "Theme from 'Firing Line'" and Mouret's Rondeau says "Theme from 'Masterpiece Theater'". So this collection does represent a popular collection of Baroque songs. And it plays that role very well.

Other standout tracks include: 2 movements from Vivaldi's justifiably famous "The Four Seasons", Bach's amazing "Air on the G String" and Handel's "Xerxes". The disc includes no vocal tracks. "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" from Bach's Cantata No. 147 gets performed on a solo organ (the original has vocals and a string arrangement). So those uneasy with "classical style singing" will find no problems here.

All in all, this disc serves as a good introduction to a great period of music history. It could also serve as a starting point for selecting a favorite composer or as a guide for building a classical music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good "best of" CD, but nothing more........2001-09-27

This CD does what it says it does: it gives you a brief, excellently recorded overview of the Baroque. But remember, this is just bits and pieces of a great store of music.

This CD will whet your appetite. You'll need to buy more, after you've heard the excerts of the great works here.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Collection of Music.......2001-09-19

Pachelbel's Canon in D is always good but the rest of the tracks shine as well. This is a superb collection of classical music. If you're new to classical music and love strings, purchase this CD. You'll be glad that you did.

    5 out of 5 stars DEFINES "CLASSIC".......2000-05-26

We have all heard the infinitely moving Canon in D by Pachelbel hundreds of times - it is not surprising that it has appeared, in one form or another, in commercials, films (most notably Ordinary People, which used the main theme as the underscoring for the entire film) - it is perfect, simple and incredibly, undeniably moving. But you are in for more treats on this basic Baroque sampler, which features many popular themes you may know, despite the fact that you may not be a hard-core classical music buff. The joy of each and every one of these cuts lies in their simple, enduring melodies and the gorgeous musical settings provided here. They sound fresh, new and as contemporary as anything you might hear on the radio. This album has a holiday after-effect as well; the fanfares, hymns and exciting instrumentation (horns, harps, strings galore) make you feel as if it is Christmas every day.

5 out of 5 stars music inside you.......2005-10-01

Have you ever felt music inside you when watching the sun going down, when felling the breeze in your hair, when smelling the grass in a gentle summer night...? The music of this CD may remind you that part of yourself that we may tend to forget in our busy life, liked the words of Celibidache which I liked very much: "the music is not the notes, YOU are the music"!
You would feel in this way, when listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of Faure's work.......2003-02-15

I bought this cd not knowing anything about Gabriel Faure's music. A local orchestra was planning to perform Masques et Bergamasques, so I picked this cd being the most inexpensive way of buying something I possibly was not going to enjoy. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love this cd! It has such a nice variation of formats: piano concerto (Ballede in F sharp major Op. 19), piano solo (Baracarolle No.1 in A minor, Op. 20), vocal (Requiem, Op. 48), and symphony (Masques et Bergamasques). The music is also well played by various artists...no complaints on the performance side. And if it is true that one becomes the thoughts and vibrations that one allows to enter his or her mind, then by listening to Faure you may find yourself becoming a bit more tender, patient, and even romantic in your ways.

    4 out of 5 stars Romance.......2002-11-23

Bought this CD originally because of Romance, but I like it all. This is a new composer for me and I'm glad I found Faure'.

    4 out of 5 stars good value.......2002-03-01

i'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get an inexpensive taste for faure's music. The recordings are decent, and the selection is interesting. After this, check out his nocturnes for piano and of course the Requiem.

4 out of 5 stars Good but too literal and too classical.......2007-02-24

This, when you boil it down to its essence, pretty much sounds like classical music played with a jazz beat rather than any extended jazz improvisations on classical pieces akin to the Wayne Shorter band's interpretation of "Valse Triste" on the "Soothsayer" album. In fact, this sounds less jazzy than Brubeck's 1950s classical themed album "Jazz Impressions of Eurasia" or Stan Getz's interpretation of Michel Legrand's "Back to Bach" on "Communications '72."

This is more like a jazz version of what Emerson, Lake & Palmer do with rock music. Loussier's technique is formidable and his band are total virtuosos on their instruments and the album as a whole is impressive and fun to hear when you're in a more upbeat and non-introspective mood but the deepness of the Bach pieces are definitely trivialized by doing it in the jazz idiom this straight. Jazz gets deep through improvisation. I think Loussier needed to give himself freer rein to express himself and improvise. If I want straight Bach I can go listen to the original pieces done by the best classical players of all time.

Threfore, this is a higher-than-average recommendation only if you don't mind some high-energy classical-light with overtones of cool-jazz hipness but if you want something state-of-the-art that really digs deep go listen to Brad Mehldau's trio offerings.

    5 out of 5 stars BACH & JAZZ LOVERS.......2000-12-31

Being a huge fan of Bach's (I could honestly listen to his piano and vocal music all day long!) this album was a natural for me. After reading the other reviews online and hearing two friends rave about it, I decided to buy this CD and am awfully glad I did. What wonderful arrangements! This is definitely an album for both Bach lovers and jazz lovers. The source music is, of course, powerful and innovative; Loussier takes Bach and doesn't so much "transform" him as he does take the music to another level...keeping all the beauty. My personal favorite would be the very familiar "Air On A G String." Not better, mind you. Simply wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Treat yourself nice with Loussier's music..........2000-10-27

My best friend introduced this CD to me, the very first time for me to explore how fantastic someone can make for classic music! I am a lover for both classic and jazz music. Loussier is the master for this beautiful combination! Treat yourself nice every now and then, and enjoy this CD with friends or along with a good bottle of wine! I can't help it but fall in love with his music, eventually become a collector of Loussier's work. And I am glad to tell you that friends around me start to appreciate classic music because of the Loussier... You will love him too!

5 out of 5 stars An authentic masterpiece.......2000-05-21

If Bach himself could listen Loissier version of his music, he would say "he understood the escence". I'really enjoyed this cd, and I recommend it to every Bach lover, and to every good jazz lover.

5 out of 5 stars Love the soprano sax.......2007-05-18

If you don't already love the soprano sax, this should do it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Musical Peformance.......2006-03-20

In my opinion, this is one of the best Classical CDs ever produced. I listen to it often and I am amazed at what an incredibly MUSICAL performance Branford Marsalis had. If you like saxaphone, I think you will love it. If you don't, I think you will still find it valuable because the technique, the phrasing are quintissential.

3 out of 5 stars Just a small point of rectifition.......2004-12-28

None of the works presented here precede the invention of the saxophone. Please look this up. You will find the saxophone invented around 1840, yes early romantic. And in addition, I believe many of the composers here used the saxophone at least once in their music. This is certainly true of Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel and Villa-Lobos. (Villa-Lobos used the saxophone in at least 40 works!)

    2 out of 5 stars What am I missing?.......2003-12-19

I think it is very admirable that Marsalis has attempted to produce a classical CD, however, this is not the sublime, masterpiece that so many previous reviewers have labelled it. His tone is particularly unstable, and not very even, his soprano playing is miles better than his alto however. This is a real shame, as the primary solo instrument in the saxophone family is the alto, anyone beginning study in classical saxophone would need to get this sorted first. His tuning is barely acceptable, but only for a jazzo, he would be shot if he played so out for a real saxophone teacher. Please have a listen to some real repertoire for saxophone, played by a real player, such as Bornkamp, Rousseau, Delangle, Fourmeau, Michat, Londeix, etc. This is a good INTRODUCTION to classical music, if for the first time, but please don't accept this as being the be all and end all of classical music, and of saxophone.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!.......2003-03-17

I hae been a fan of Branford Marsalis for a while, but I had no idea that he had created a classical album. All of the songs are beautifully rendered. This CD is a treasure at any price.

    5 out of 5 stars Sparkling Scarlatti.......2007-03-30

I can lay claim to be a lover of baroque music, rather than an aficionado of Domenico Scarletti. I insist on a harpsichord for Bach concertos, but am happy with, perhaps prefer, a piano for solo works. I have a good idea on how Scarlatti should sound, the music should dance and sparkle, light and airy, no thumping, even in solemn passages. I have to admit I did not much like the recent recording by Scherbakov, which was highly praised by most of the critics, I found it a bit ponderous. But I think this two CD recording by Mikhail Pletnev is pretty near perfect, and 2 hours 20 minutes of magic delivered to me in far away Australia for just over $12 is fantastic value. My only criticism is that the cover notes are skimpy. Five stars, easy. If you think of buying don't delay, it is no longer in Virgin's catalogue, so will soon disappear.

5 out of 5 stars PLETNEV IS ABSOLUTLEY FIRST RATE.......2006-08-05

Ignore one silly review and focus on the intelligent ones. What an incredible value for less than $10.00! I have Pletnev's Live At Carnegie Hall which is fabulous. He is an incredible talent and these are wonderful interpretations of Scarlatti's incomparable sonatas. Treat yourself. The quality is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Scarlatti with pizzaz.......2005-08-07

If Vivaldi was the "concerto factory" of the 18th century, then Domenico Scarlatti was the "harpsichord sonata factory" with his some 550 individual compositions (mostly binary in form). Yet, as numerous as they are, these works are rich in musical innovations, techniques, textures and imagination. Only one person has recorded all of them (and survived). The great Vladimar Horowitz helped expose these great works in his legendary concerts, and Scarlatti's sonatas were his "calling card" to open many a concert.

Now, Russian piano-wizard Mikhail Pletnev brings his uninhibited technique to give this music an energetic workout on the piano (as opposed to the original harpsichord). And while Mr. Pletnev applies his characteristic stylistic liberties to the score, it seems to bring out the best in these works. His readings possess tremendous energy and verve, yet the music never seems quite 'overdone.' Indeed, Mr. Pletnev brings a captivating dynamic and pizzaz to many of these sonatas that is probably not out of the realm of what Scarlatti could imagine. After all, Scarlatti wrote much of this music with virtuosity in mind and an uninhibited style relative for his day. Overall, this is a most exciting and satisfying collection recorded in vivid, full-bodied sound.

This two CD set is a fine introduction to the many sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti and one of the best Baroque bargins around. Both Gramophone and Penguin give high marks to this set for its imaginative and dynamic readings and realistic, vivid sound. With Pletnev's fine readings here, this vivacious and intelligently-varied piano music should rise towards the status it deserves in the repertoire. Compositions - 4.5 stars; Peformance - 5 stars; Sound - 5 stars.

Equally receiving high marks is Pletnev's recording of C.P.E. Bach's much-neglected and highly innovative keyboard sonatas. Pletnev's Chopin recital featuring Sonata No. 3 is also a real treat and most recommended. And new for 2006 for Pletnev is a fresh recording of Mozart's piano sonatas (K. 330-332).

2 out of 5 stars glenn gould wannabee 30 years too late.......2005-04-11

Along with Zarafiants's Naxos recording, this recording ranks at the bottom of currently available Scarlatti recordings. Sure, Pletnev has the chops, and his take on K 519 is exhilarating. But overall, the performances are weirdly accentuated and too fast--K 113, in which all sense of dialogue between the bass and extreme treble in this hand-crossing masterpiece is lost, is a sad example. Scarlatti can sound great on piano, as Pogorelich and Michael Lewin make clear.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Scarlatti !.......2004-12-25

If you like Scarlatti on the piano versus the harpsichord, Pletnev is really worth considering.

    l. Great technique: wonderfully clear, good use of contrast and dynamics; very musical;

    2. Carefully thought out and well varied program (over thirty Scarlatti sonatas);

    3. Excellent sound;

    4. Very inexpensive (2 CDs for the less than the price of a regular CD);

He doesn't make me forget Horowitz -I haven't heard Pogorelich or Perahia in Scarlatti - but wonderful playing and broader exposure to Scarlatti, who has a style all his own, trumps everything else for me.
