Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
December Morning.......2004-10-17
It is just so soothing. I've had the opporturnity to see him in person (sort of) on QVC shopping channel. I can just see his face as he places along with the rest of the group. He looks so peaceful and serene. And that is how I feel listening to his music.
Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24
Tim Janis's latest CD is split into two sections; the first 9 tracks feature new works, and the latter 10 tracks are taken from his live performance at the Lincoln Centre (USA) earlier in 2001.
The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.
"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!
These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".
At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.
If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.
Highly recommended.
Very good but not excellent.......2002-11-22
When I first heard Tim Janis on our local PBS station, I was memerized by his music so I had to get the CD. I'm glad I did but I have to admit when a friend pointed out that all his songs pretty much sounded the same, I had to agree. Maybe as he gets older there will be some more variety, I hope so. He's a very talented young man.
An outstanding CD that leaves you wanting more.......2002-03-15
"An American Composer in Concert" is another outstanding CD from Tim Janis. The lush mixture of ensemble and orchestral songs truly transport you to a better place emotionally and mentally. Tim Janis composes the music I've been waiting my whole life to hear, though I didn't know it until I heard it. I'm much more at peace with nature and myself after listening to his music. On this CD, "Blue Hill Bay" is probably my favorite of all Tim Janis' songs, but all the songs on this CD (with the possible exception of a vocal rendition of "Amazing Grace" that doesn't seem to belong) are great. If you haven't heard Tim Janis' music, you owe it to yourself to get this one and listen to it. Since I've found his music grows on people, I guarantee if you listen to your CD 5 times, you'll be hooked like I am and explore his other CD's as well. Enjoy!!
Incredible music from an incredible evening..........2001-11-23
I LOVE the music of Tim Janis and this CD is a truly wonderful CD. This CD has georgeous live tracks and extra bonus tracks to make it completely full of breathtaking melodies...I would truly recommend it to anyone who wants to have some beautiful music around the house!

Tops of 2002.......2003-03-10
I've been listening to this cd for months and was glad to see Amazon have it available. It is without question in my top 2 or 3 for 2002. There are many great songs here and the recording quality is superb. The song 'THE ONE BEFORE THE LAST' may be one of the best songs they have ever recorded. For those of you expecting a cd of all up-tempo rockers you will be diappointed. But,you will end up like I did and become so tied up in this cd that this point soon is a past memory. I see this band growing so much in their musical ability and I hope they don't get discouraged by their overlooked greatness. It seems odd to me that the people of Spain have embraced this band like they have and we can't seem to give them their just due. I'm just glad I was fortunate enough to get this new cd because it has been a joy to listen to these past months.

THE FIRST SOLO ALBUM BY THE REAL BEACH BOY!.......2007-07-20
I am writing a review on the legendary album entitled "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" by one of Rock's all-time greatest artists ever. I give you one of America's favorite sons and the pride of Hawthorne, California, the late great Rock legend M-R. D-E-N-N-I-S W-I-L-S-O-N! "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" was originally released in 1977 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Caribou/Brother Records label. This album would see its debut on Compact Disc in 1991 on the Caribou/Epic Records label in association with Sony Music Entertainment which is manufactured and distributed by Epic Records. This album has been long out of print and has since become an instant classic and collectible.
DENNIS WILSON will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being the first BEACH BOY to release a solo album and for playing in the greatest American band ever. THE BEACH BOYS will forever be remembered in our hearts as being America's band. I have many memories of THE BEACH BOYS and DENNY but I choose to keep them to myself. In many ways, DENNY would be compared to his famous genius brother, THE BEACH BOYS co-founder, writer, leader and producer, MR. BRIAN WILSON. DENNY would write and contribute great songs for THE BEACH BOYS but my favorite that stands out the most is without a doubt, "Forever." DENNIS WILSON would also have visions and dreams of writing, producing and creating music of his own as a solo artist. As a result of all of this, DENNY would release his 1977 "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" masterpiece album. "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" has contributions from legendary artists such as guitarist John Hanlon, drummers Hal Blaine, Bobby Figueroa and Ricky Fataar, vocal backgrounds from the late Karen Lamm-Wilson, Trisha Roach, Billy Hinsche, Gregg Jakobson and Bruce Johnston. Photography for the album was taken by both Dean O. Torrence and the late Karen Lamm-Wilson. "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" is without a doubt, a true testament of a brilliant genius in his own right that was always in the shadow of his famous brother. This legendary album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" is the tales and tragic story in the life and times of one DENNIS WILSON. His music is his story.
It is now time to let DENNY'S music speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically as it was originally truly intended. "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" begans with the beautiful harmonious Rocker "River Song," the Rock n' Roller "What's Wrong," the beautifully slow and romantic synthesized number "Moonshine," the beautifully slow and powerful song "Friday Night," the slow soulful and funkish "Dreamer," the beautifully slow, powerful and emotional "Thoughts Of You," the beautifully slow and synthesized song that has so much feeling, power and emotion, "Time," the mild and heartfelt number "You And I," another soulful and funkish Rocker entitled "Pacific Ocean Blues," another beautifully slow and well arranged song entitled "Farewell My Friend," the beautiful song that actually has a musical atmosphere of a rainbow, "Rainbows" and the beautifully slow and powerful end to the album entitled "End Of The Show." Throughout the whole entire album, vocally, DENNY truly pours out his very heart and soul before all of our very eyes and ears. DENNY was so emotional when he sang, you can actually feel the power of his voice. There is a saying that DENNY actually had a crack in his voice towards the end. That crack in his voice meant that he had a broken heart.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this album if you can find it. As I stressed earlier, this legendary album is long out of print. As we speak, there are two used CD albums being offered on Amazon for as much as $300.00. The call is yours.
In closing, DENNIS WILSON'S solo career would take off following this album's release in 1977 but it would not last long. DENNY would also begin work on the famous unreleased "BAMBOO" album but would never see fruitation. There have been many collectible versions of this album unofficially released in the underground market. I for one, am waiting for my copy of "BAMBOO" to arrive and am looking forward to hearing it. From what I've heard, "BAMBOO" is supposed to be much better than "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE" (Not to disrespect or take anything away from "PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE."). DENNY would not live very long either. When DENNY died in December 1983, a lot of THE BEACH BOYS would die with him forever. Since then, DENNY has already received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as a member in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame as the co-founding member and drummer of THE BEACH BOYS. In my opinion, DENNIS WILSON has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements as a band member and solo artist will never be forgotten. So here's to you late great DENNY. Thanks for the incredible memories and moments. Farewell my friend. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEACH BOYS RULE! DENNIS WILSON LIVES! R.I.P. DENNIS CARL WILSON, Born 4 December 1944, Died 28 December 1983 at age 39. Also R.I.P. CARL WILSON, Born 21 December 1946, Died 6 February 1998 at age 51. Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Definatley not .......2007-01-24
This album is the real deal."Pacific Ocean Blue" would be the only officially released Dennis Wilson solo album of his carrer. It is a gem in every respect.I like this album for the same reasons I like "The Band", Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, etc. It is absolutley overflowing in soul, something in which American popular music is truly lacking in today.People always wonder why the great musicians and artists always went thru such horrible things in their lives and why they could not just straighten up their life use their talent and live happily ever after. The pain of life is the great artists paintbrush.Angonizing pain equals unprecedented beauty. The first track on this album "River Song" is about how insane city life is and how attracted Dennis was to the existence of the river. It just flows, nothing will stop it,it just flows. The song has gospel singers in the backround and the whole song just rocks. You can tell he had been working on this song for years.and he had.The third track "Moonshine," is one of the best on the album and one of my personal favorite songs period. The backround vocals are just heavenly and it is quite evident that Carl Wilson was involved with this album though uncredited. You couldn't ask for much more in two minutes time than "Moonshine"."Dreamer" is another standout track that sounds so much like "the Band" to me it scares me.The middle part of the song still blows my mind how it just comes out of left field and all and all it is a brilliant song with great lyrics and a killer band sound."Thoughts of you" is so sad and yet so real that it haunts my dreams.Literally.I'm sorry if anyone disagrees with me, but this song is what music is supposed to be.You will not here anyone singing like this on "American Idol".This is a man singing for his life, which no surprise he lost six years later. It is one of the saddest and beautiful songs i have ever heard. You can't learn to sing with that kind of soul in a music school. It is something gained only from years of both experience in music and life.Look at Ray Charles.Anyway "Rainbows" is another great one on the album with a mandolin and killer backround [...] to think of it there is not a bad song on this album and anyone who truly loves music should own this.Check out his unreleased album "Bamboo" as well.
Dennis Wilson is a rocker with a R&B sound,EXCELLENT.......2006-05-29
Dennis voice holds quite well in this album. Compositions are EXCELLENT, his keyboard playing was a hidden gift and musicians contributing are a great mix. He is a R&B musician, same as Carl and this album will rock your soul. Sound is great. It is wonder this cd together with Bamboo are not RE-ISSUED. Even though Bamboo is not a finish work still hold itself as a good album.
Pacific Ocean Blue (Remast).......2006-04-01
I bought this solo-cd for awhile ago new for 39SEK=today's money 5 us-dollars and it says on the frontcover it's digitally remastered.
The Real Deal !!!!.......2005-08-30
Dennis lived the life Brian could only imagine. Dennis had musical talent? Who knew?!!! This album's music somehow caught the reflection of a soul, whose feelings were as deep and wide as the "Pacific Ocean Blue". Compare this to anything Carl ever did,and one sees quickly that the "wild one" stood nearest to big brother Brian in sensitivity---they were,in some ways, two reflections of the same heart. I have this album on vinyl. I play it often. No other music, including Brian's, is quite as emotionaly sublime. In every song, you get the sense you're listening to someone swimming hard toward the watery surface of himself, so he can call for help; not caring if anyone hears or not. We call an act, such as this, Art. Don't pay an exorbitant price to the gougers who have listed their copies for upwards of $300.00. Be patient. Music this good will find a way to it's audience.

Michael Palin has certainly been busy since his days with Monty Python's Flying Circus. In Full Circle, Palin and a film crew go on a year-long adventure visiting 18 countries along the Pacific Rim. The film was eventually made into a 10-part PBS series, to which this book serves as a companion. Not for nothing is this part of the world called the "Ring of Fire"; volcanoes punctuate the landscape, and Palin even climbs one still smoking from a recent eruption. But the difficult landscape is only one challenge in this at times hair-raising, at times hilarious, always fascinating journey around the world's largest ocean. In the Philippines, Palin witnesses "psychic surgery": on the Urubamba River, Palin simultaneously clings for his life to a dugout canoe as he shoots the rapids and keeps up with England's progress in the World Cup via shortwave radio.
Whether he's visiting a Gulag camp in Siberia or chowing down on maggots in Mexico, Palin meets the challenges of rough travel with grace, courage, and more than a little humor. Full Circle is fun to read, includes many color photographs from Palin's adventures, and makes a terrific addition to the armchair traveler's bookshelf.
Book Description
Full Circle could be subtitled Palin's Book of Wonders. As he and his television crew undertake what may be the first-ever circumnavigation of the Pacific Rim, they prove that there is an awful lot of the world Palin hasn't seen. In this, the third and most ambitious of Michael Palin's adventures, he travels for almost a year through the eighteen countries that border the world's largest ocean.Volcanoes mark Palin's journey like stepping stones. He climbs one which has freshly erupted and is still smoking. He is forced to negotiate mountains and plunging gorges, cross glaciers and dodge icebergs. He follows great rivers like the Yangtze and the Amazon to some of the most remote places on earth, and he confronts the notorious Cape Horn and the windswept beaches of western Alaska. The people Palin meets provide a constant supply of surprises, pleasures and lessons in life. He visits a Gulag camp in Siberia with one of its few remaining survivors, talks to head-hunters in Borneo, eats maggots in Mexico and rustles camels in the deserts of Australia. He's stood up on a date in Adelaide, taken short on the banks of the Amazon, allowed to land a plane at Seattle and sing with the Pacific Fleet choir in Vladivostok.Full Circle is the record of a journey of several lifetimes and of the often colourful, sometimes disgusting, frequently hair-raising, once or twice hysterical but almost always beautiful world that stretches around the Pacific Ocean.
Customer Reviews:
Arnold Rimmer.......2002-10-26
As always Palin has produced a great travel book and series... this I found better than his "80 Days". The other thing people might find interesting about this travel book is that it takes us to some places which are hard to reach even in this day and age, so this is the only way we can know them.
Also suggested- "Hemingway Adventure"
Magnificent.......2000-04-06
Full Circle is just as good, if not better then his othertravel/comedy books. It is simply magnificent.
An enlightning tour of the Pacific Rim countries........1998-08-13
Michael Palin does it again with Full Circle. Starting in Alaska Michael travels anti-clockwise around the rim of the Pacific Ocean visiting countries as diverse as Russia, Korea, Viet Nam, New Zealand, Colombia and the west coast of North American. He tells of his adventures getting to and exploring some fantastic natural wonders, visiting a Russian gulag with a former inmate, the relief of Japan, the Vietnamese reactions to a westerner, the biggness of Australia and the hardworking people of South America. The section on the United States is short and not always sweet. Palin is taken aback by the physical bigness of Americans, and rush, and loudness. By the time he reaches Canada and attends a "lumberjack" fair (no singing Mounties included!) he really "wants to go home". We also learn a bit about how the series and book were produced, his wife Helen and their children, and that being on a job for the BBC doesn't always mean smooth sailing! Michael's friend Basil Pao took the photographs - he also joined Michael on "Around the World in Eighty Days". I can highly recommend this book and not only to fans of Monty Python - it doesn't end how you might expect!
What you would have seen in the Pacific.......1998-07-28
I've seen the 10-part Full Circle tv series, and I had a serious addiction from the start. When it ended, I went through a withdrawl period. I silently rocked myself in a chair in my room repeating "I must get the book,... must find book...must read book." I've got it now and I'm back on a Full Circle high. The book goes into details that they never had time for on the series. It tells you everything that you would have noticed had you been in Japan or Australia or Chile.
Ahh... I can imagine myself right now on the streets of China getting a massage from a blind man.
Fun, Adventure, Humor and Discovery!.......1998-03-03
Travelling with Michael is to say the least exhilarating, fun, adventurous and a journey of discovery. While many can only dream of actually making the trip, Michael Palins' books are the next best thing. It's not just where he goes, but how he does it and perhaps most importantly: seeing it through his mind's eye, which needless to say can make humor out of nothingness. All you need is to relax and have the urge to increase your imagination. A wild but educative ride!

Great for Meditation.......2006-12-08
Great Meditation CD, especially for city dwellers. Drown out the upstairs neighbors, the traffic outside, and find some peace in your home with the soothing sound of the ocean! The gong sound is also very helpful for keeping time during meditation!!
