5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting!.......2004-05-13

This 1991 outing from one of my favorite artists is a really excellent follow-up to his previous album "One By One".

This album has a very Nebraska highway feel and the album title is perfect! "The 8:45" is amazing and really excellent driving music building up to a really excellent climax.

The theme from "Dances With Wolves" is intense and riveting. My favorite songs though are "Nebraska", "I-90" and "Before The Fall".

Get this CD. IT's worth the hard search! They should re-issue this album in the near future!

4 out of 5 stars Great new age driving CD.......2004-03-11

When I think of driving on a distant desert highway I think Lost Frontier. A few tracks like I-90 have a rythmic yet lonely feel. All songs are acoustic masterpieces. Guitar lovers will find plenty of appealing upbeat tracks.

Some of the more beautiful jewels are A Place Called Home and Ashland. The two tracks are overwhelmingly peaceful and make great use of the instrument of all instruments, the piano. This is an essential CD in my new age collection.

This is the first Young Fresh Fellows CD I've bought, and I love it. If this is their worst CD, I can't wait to see what the other ones are like.

2 out of 5 stars Buy it used.......2002-01-06

Who would really rate the Fellows but their fans? And you read the reviews and we're all basically saying the same thing: you should have it because the Fellows rock, but in the grand scheme of things, all their other albums are better. I would suggest This One's For The Ladies, or any one of their other albums. But pick this up eventually, because the Fellows guarantee a smile, even when they have songs like "Take My Brain Away" on them. You will never see a better live show than the Fellows. I can only hope you already own a few better records.

4 out of 5 stars Not a great record? ( Compared to what?).......2001-11-06

This is a solid record, anything with 7 great songs on it is usually 4 or 5 more great songs than most other.... Anyway, my point is, of the 15 tunes 1/2 are really good and to me that's worthy of making note, think of it as a world class EP and skip the 3 or 4 songs that don't do it for you.

Keep in mind, it's hard to find music in the style anymore, kinda like the Byrds with a sense of humor, maybe that's not a good description but you'll see what I mean when you buy it, and you will buy it.

3 out of 5 stars The worst of the Fellows (but still worth it for a fan).......2001-05-27

This is probably the weakest of the Young Fresh Fellows' albums. That's not to say that's it's a total dud all the way through; there are plenty of songs to like. "Celebration," "You're Not Supposed To Laugh," and the theme song all rank among the Fellows' best work, and "The Universal Trendsetter" and "I'd Say That You Were Upset" exemplify the kind of humor that was so pervasive on the band's earlier albums. Many of the tracks on here just don't grab me, however. Some are fairly boring, and others are noisy without saying much. That's not to say that you won't like them (they've been growing on me), but this probably shouldn't be your introduction to the wonderful world of the Young Fresh Fellows. Get it after you're familiar with the group's better work.

4 out of 5 stars Not the most accessible YFF CD.......1999-02-24

This, the Young Fresh Fellow's 4th studio recording (circa 1988), is probably their 5th best album, after the first 3 and This One's For The Ladies. It's still a great album, but it's a little less creative, playful, fun, exuberent and, well, interesting, than their earlier work. As the band admitted in the original LP liner notes, success hadn't hit, they were still holding onto their day jobs ("we have our degrees to fall back on") and about to go through a roster change (original guitarist Chuck Carroll would leave to be replaced by the Fastbacks' Kurt Bloch). If not Totally Lost, they were definitely searching, and some of them were racing into their 30s when they made this. It shows.

5 out of 5 stars truly conceptual album with the minimum quantity of lyrics.......2003-08-29

"In 122 AD, Roman emperor Hadrian decided to draw the limits of the Empire with a wall, fencing the north of England from Carlisle to New Castle. The ancient wall... (is still like an) ...eerie reminder of the far end of the world." If you consider that this is written in the booklet, you can imagine the dreamlike beauty of this record
This album is their first. In 1999 followed Odissey (in my opinion even better). I will not go at lenght, since their music says it all....

    Album Description

XII ALFONSO is getting to be one of the "greatest" bands of international Progressive rock, thanks to his first album issued in 1996 and called "The Lost Frontier". This concept is about Hadrian's Wall, in Scotland, which separated the civilized world from the barbarian countries during the Roman times. Led by Philippe CLAERHOUT, the musicians from Bordeaux have built a superb work with long instrumental passages, some female vocals, and a Celtic-influenced atmosphere sometimes reminding of Mike OLDFIELD. Mickey SIMMONDS, the then-current CAMEL keyboards player, helps with his wonderful symphonic sounds while guitarist Dan AR BRAS brings a noticeable Celtic touch of good taste. A remarkable work !

4 out of 5 stars Music from a very special place.......2005-08-07

Northumberland is my favorite part of England, and I just returned from my fifth visit. It is a special place, so special that a visit there was the band's inspiration for this recording. The band returned to Haltwhistle and debuted the recording there, along with the video, and I'm told the townsfolk were moved to tears.

BTW, Hadrian's Wall is in England, not Scotland. The emperor Hadrian ordered it built to keep the Scots out, in fact.
