Myths and Legends arrives 20 years after the release of Valley in the Clouds, David Arkenstone's still-mesmerizing debut recording, and the composer/multi-instrumentalist calls it "probably the most ambitious project I have ever attempted." Extras certainly abound here. Beyond a bonus DVD, which mingles nature images, animation, and a few campy videos, Myths and Legends includes a supplemental audio CD designed to be played simultaneously (on a separate system) with the main audio disc. Synching up two discs can be an unwieldy task, yet the effort yields an entertaining listening experience where the main disc is enriched by a wealth of sonic accents (roars, voices, rattles, and hums), giving Arkenstone's musical tales a deeper dimension. (The migration of electric guitar between the two discs during "Daughter of the Sun" provides some fun aural calisthenics.) So, is it great music or just a great gimmick? For fans attracted to Arkenstone's cinematic flourishes and storytelling reveries through sound, it's pleasant, usually interesting listening--another reminder that he remains a worthy contender for a major soundtrack project. Arkenstone adorns many compositions with Celtic, Middle Eastern, and tribal colors, and links many with a sense of spirited, seafaring swagger. His fondness for flutes sometimes softens his sound a touch too much, but at other times Arkenstone allows the cosmic winds to carry him to interesting, dynamic places (such as "Tree of Life"). --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A unprecedented musical journey.......2007-08-04

If you are a fan of David's past recordings, you know already that you've been chartered across to all points of the globe and back again. If there were a CD that showcased all his musical attributes into one, this would most certainly be it. Just about every sound vacation that he's brought to life over the past twenty years is here and then some.

"Tree of Life" consists of an interesting blend of instruments in an Arabian setting - reminds me much of his one of his past cd's "Caravan of Light".You might think you're on a tropical island at the beginning, until the flutes and drums hit you.

"Legend of Bell Rock" has a very "Celtic Book of Days / Spirit of Ireland" feel to it. It starts off calm and vibrant, and then whisks you away into a celtic jig. Sounds a bit too similar and simple after a while, but definitely not a bad thing.

Back to the Middle East again with "Song of Sheherazade". This one starts off with a vocal solo that eventually makes you feel as though you are wandering an endless desert or Arabian marketplace. Add a little more ambience/trance and you've got a surprisingly catchy beat.

If you've listened to any of "Ah*Nee*Mah's" cd's (David and Diane Arkenstone), then you'll find "Daughter of the Sun" to be charting familiar territory. Authentic Native American chants in a toe-tapping setting with wood flutes and a rather interesting acoustic setting. This one begs to be played with the included ambience cd. What's really surprising about this track is near the end, it breaks out with an electric/rock guitar and multiple sets of instruments. It's quite a dramatic finish indeed and it works!

If you loved "Atlantis" (2004), you might very well enjoy "Oceanus" Although this one is far more `chill-out' than anything that was on that cd, you can't help but think of a tranquil waterscape where you are floating endlessly.

Fans of David's (2001) "Sketches From an American Journey" should enjoy the next track "Across the River" as it charts the main elements of that cd quite well. It's another style from David we've come to know and love.

"The Wolf's Head", starts of like something out of the Medieval Ages then accelerates into a very bouncy tune. If you enjoyed "Quest of the Dream Warrior / Celtic Book of Days", you'll get a nice wake up call here with this track. If you've suddenly got the urge to mount your stallion and take part in some dramatic quest after listening to this track, I won't shun you any =) Enjoy the dramatic finish as always.

"Temple of Isis" isn't yet just another Arabian tune, although one could see it that way immediately, but it goes back even further towards the time of the great Egyptians. Nothing too unpredictable here if you've listened to similar tracks like this before, but still another wonderful track as always.

Finishing of a cd after eight great tracks is never an easy task, you've got to put the finishing touches on the "journey" and leave the listener with a lasting impression. I actually can't recall too many moments in the past where David has had a track that resembled anything of Spanish nature. The Spanish guitar really highlights the track and then leads us into a heralding beat. Before you know it, "that sound" hits you like a ton of bricks and then marching drums! This track had a big role to fill and it does its job nicely.

As for the acoustic cd, I was able to listen to it on my computer alongside the regular cd (I'm sure you'll get a more rewarding system if you actually hook it up to two separate computers/sound systems and two sets of separate speakers as suggested), but I was able to pick up on some of the sound differences with my setup. It's a very interesting concept indeed and nothing that I've seen done before.

But you know, out of the entire package, I really, really, enjoy the DVD. Thanks to the power of computer animation, you will be able to experience, for the first time, a visionary journey in addition to the sounding of the tracks. I cannot emphasis how wonderful of an addition this is. It's like "watching" the music come to life, as corny as that may sound. With DVD-Audio sound, you'll be able to pick up the difference from standard CD-Audio, especially if you have a better sound system for your DVD Player. There are also interviews with David Arkenstone and director Johnny Wilson as stated in the item description. It's pretty fulfilling to be able to listen for a few minutes from one of the greatest American new age composers his personal thoughts of his own cd.

The final recommendation is this: Just get it! If you're a fan of David Arkenstone already, then you should have already made up your mind just by knowing who the composer of this cd was! When you know of his capabilities, then you know you can rarely ever be truly disappointed. For those who have never heard David's work, but love new age/world music, consider this to be a great introduction to the marveled musician. You'll get but a small taste of his creative spirit and then if you want even more of a particular "sub-genre", you can further divulge in the appropriate cd for that sub-genre. Considering the price tag often coincides with the price of regular cds, you're getting an unprecedented value here with the sweet extras.

David Arkenstone. Twenty years later, and he shows no signs of stopping his addictive musical infection, and I'm a listener who is not ashamed to admit that I'm glad I caught the strand of musical delight.

5 out of 5 stars Myths & Legends.......2007-06-21

I am a big fan of David Arkenstone's music since first time I hear his state of the art Atlantis album. David Arkenstone is like a painter - he is using sound colors and textures to create images in music. With his music you can image far worlds you've never seen before.

On Myths & Legends, David Arkenstone also giving you a ticket to travel an actual visual world - with a bonus DVD contains high quality videos for all of the songs. Experiencing his deeply atmospheric music with 5.1 dolby digital audio definitely a unique event.

Also on audio part - there is an ambient CD. When you played it with main audio CD simultaneously it's creating even more deeper atmosphere (you will need separate music players and loudspeakers for it). Indeed it will let you in to the world of Myths & Legens.

I suggest this album to everyone. An old fan of David or new one - doesn't matter. It will be a unique audio-visual experience with every second of it.

This magnificent soundtrack perfectly captures the grandeur of Edward Zwick's 1994 film. It sounds the way a Montana sunset looks: big, wide, far-reaching, and full of color. In fact, the music is so good most viewers were able to overlook Brad Pitt's acting. This is such a powerful soundtrack that sound editors frequently use portions of it as an early trailer score for other films. Composed, conducted and produced by James Horner, Legends makes use of the fabulous London Symphony Orchestra, as well as fiddle and Japanese wood flute that will remind listeners of Horner's other famous works: the soundtracks to Glory and Titanic. --Charles R. Cross

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Solitude of the Legends of the Fall .......2007-06-19

I absolutely love James Horner and his works, and I was not at all surprised when I listened to this stunning soundtrack. The soundtrack brings peaceul serenity of the wilderness along with the sudden unpredictability of human character (in this case Tristan's). It won't lull you to sleep so easily, but I am certain that is exactly what Horner wants- he doesn't want a lullaby but a soundtrack to describe the feelings, and the days of the characters who live the music. Like the soundtracks of "Titanic", "Swing Kids", "The New World", and "Troy", the music will take you to another time, and mutes out the sound of traffic, and noise of this busy present day, to bring you near to the heart of the past and it's tumultuous times that seem all more beautiful than what we experience today. For the regular people who are certain this music should only be confined to stuffy elderly people wanting a nap, prepare to be proved wrong as a teenager wrote this. I highly encourage you to if not buy, at least listen to this music.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest soundtrack I've ever heard.......2007-02-17

Have you ever seen a movie before and loved it for no other reason than the soundtrack? I love Legends of the Fall. Not because the storyline is fantastic or because Brad Pitt is dreamy. No, I love the movie because of the music. I actually bought this cassette tape ten years ago in a second hand store. I had never seen the movie but for $.25 I thought, what the hay. It quickly became my favorite cassette and now CD ever. While many movie scores have moved me, nothing has ever been quite like Horner's Legends. The emotion, the gradure of Montana, the fall of the family is beautifully expressed in the music. If I had to be stranded on a desert island for the rest of my life and could only take one CD, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Legends of the Fall.......2007-01-04

This is by far the best soundtrack, ever! I have listened to it over and over again, and I have never tired of it. I recommend this to everyone. My whole family (including my teens) love to listen to it. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Please! Forget "Titanic"!!.......2006-11-17

One of the things that bothered me a lot is that "Legends Of The Fall" was not nominated for an Oscar back in 1994-95, and I would have been more than happy if James Horner had won it for this beautiful piece of music, and not for "Titanic" three years later. Not that the latter wasn't touching, but I think that "Legends" has more personality.
Some people might say that Horner was channeling Aaron Copland, but to be honest, I simply don't care. This is his best composition from his 90's output, period. I mean the theme in the first track, as well as the theme for the Ludlow family, are truly masterpieces in their own right; when I heard them in the movie, I shed tears because these compositions fit perfectly with the drama and the beautiful landscapes you see on screen. In spite of the similarity of the track 'Revenge' with Horner's 'Hightland's Execution' from "Patriot Games", the beauty and the power of the aforementioned themes is overwhelming enough to forget that track.
All in all, "Legends Of The Fall" is a far better work than "Titanic", to tell you the truth, and this is one great, great film score by James Horner.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most exquisite scores ever created!!.......2006-11-12

I have never viewed this film, but this score is a true masterpiece.I am a big fan of movie scores and of James Horner.Almost every score he composes is an artwork but THIS is his greatest work to date. With each note,a new mood is felt. One moment you feel contentment, the next moment sorrow. While each track is good the standout among all of them is "The Ludlows".I am not at all prone to crying, but this piece has brought me near tears. The violin solos are especially affecting in this piece. Many reviewers have commented that Horner is dull and repetitive,I beg to differ.I admit that many chords and sometimes whole themes are repeated in his scores. However, nearly every time he varies an insrumentation or note to bring a change to the piece. Also,on each occasion,he usually writes a new theme to accompany a used one.Yes,he tends to be slightly repetitious, but every comoser will repeat themself at some point in time.John Williams has penned many scores that sound the same. It's called having a "style".Writers of novels do the same thing all the time with far inferior results. So don't criticize James Horner.Just enjoy his breathtaking music, beginning with this, his masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for kids and parents, too!.......2007-04-13

I rarely write reviews, but just had to write about this amazing CD. It's not your typical kiddie-fare. My three kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) listen to this one over and over again, and my husband and I are hooked, too. We are not into jazz at all, but the songs here are so catchy and fun. It's cool enough that you could even play it at an adult function, and everyone would like it. In fact, I'm buying it for my mom, who is 64, because I know that she'll be singing it around the house in no time at all -- just like we do!

4 out of 5 stars cute for kids.......2006-08-13

I bought "Nicky's Jazz Lullabies" before my baby was born and loved it, so I decided to purchase this CD. My baby is a little young for it yet, but it fun to listen to while we play. The songs are cute and catchy, and I'm sure she'll love it eventually. I'm a jazz lover and hope to introduce her to some of the greats. Plus, in my opinion, this beats those cheesy kids songs any day.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody listens when they come to my house.......2006-07-25

This is a delightful program of songs that will please everyone with a garden of word-tune delights. My family and I loved it. We've played it over and over again for our friends. I bought it for several other children I know. They loved it. One 4-year-old is determined to learn every song. And that means learning lots of words, rhymes, syncopation, from great artists of American jazz culture. A verbal infusion for the young that is great fun.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2006-01-23

I rarely write reviews, but I need to comment on how fantastic this compilation is. I have a four-year-old and an eighteen-month-old, and this CD is in heavy rotation at our house. My husband and I love the music at least as much as they do -- it's stylish and sets a great mood as we're making dinner and doing dishes. The kids love it too, needless to say. My four-year-old's favorites are Three Blind Mice (she loves when the farmer's wife squeaks that she'll give back the tails) and the final track by Peggy Lee (where she says the word *poop*, as in "party poop" -- endless laughter ensues). Ella Fitzgerald's A-Tisket, A-Tasket and Chew, Chew Your Bubblegum are priceless. All in all, I highly recommend this CD -- everyone will be happy to hear it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most under rated cd's on the market.......2005-05-03

This cd has won awards and delighted anyone who has listened. Why it isn't a requirement for kids learning about music, especially in the US where Jazz became Jazz, is beyond me. Perfectly charming songs from the best of the best who made Jazz, lots of passionate Jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Down to earth Flamenco.......2007-05-12

The performers on this collection are the cream of the crop of grass roots Flamenco. El Loreno's voice is simply mystical. La Paquera holds in her feeling the power and pasion of Flamenco in one person. if you love Flamenco this is a must.

1 out of 5 stars This is not Gypsy Kings..........2007-05-07

This music was not at all what i expected. I was expecting a bit more fun guitar and such, but the singing is what blew it: it sounded like so much screeching to me. Played once. It hurt my ears. Now, its collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars superb flamenco classics.......2007-03-12

If you want to hear flamenco at its very best you can't do better than to buy this CD. Manitas de Plata was the best of the flamenco guitarists of the 60's and La Paquera de Jerez was the signature female flamenco vocalist of her generation. The other artists on this CD are also the best of their times. Flamenco of our day still has technical virtuousity, but I can't help but think that something essential has been lost, something to do with the soul of this music form.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Songs.......2006-02-23

This CD is perfect CD for me. Traditional flamenco music.
I enjoy this CD a lot.

    Good recording - good music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Concept Album.......2007-05-18

This is the first album of Rick Wakeman's I ever heard. I fell in love at once. It has both the English sense of destiny and the modern (yes, still) sense of continuity. You get a sense of the Legend through the songs, and a new look at the love story behind some of it.

From this album I fell in love with the man's work.

    4 out of 5 stars Rick Wakeman's best.......2007-04-07

This album sounds very contemporary. Great vocal, diverse and higly dramatic musical themes - you will listen it again and again!

The only serious drawback - mediocre quality of recording.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more blastbeats.......2006-12-01

    Standout tracks = *

ARTHUR* Intro track, starts with an "epic" (actually weak) voiceover and then the keys and attempts at bombast come in... I don't know if you've ever heard Bal Sagoth, but the overall corny epic feel of this album reminds me of their work. The synths that are trying to sound like horns work way better here than on stupid black metal albums, no doubt. The keys rule this album, the highlight of this track being the set of atomic cricket chirps heard around 4:50. There's also some cool clean guitar that sounds like someone held a mic within a few feel of an unaware James from Arsis noodling unplugged as a warm-up to his set. All around this is a rocking and powerful track.

LADY OF THE LAKE Total throwaway. Yes, vocals alone can be cool, but this forty-second choral-only track is a piece of poo compared to that amazing moment right before the final movement of Edge of Sanity's Crimson.

GUINEVERE Lame traditional piano wankery to start, almost too much to forgive after the last track already had me looking for a way out. There's a little respite from all sound, then the ballad crap comes in. It's almost saved by the sweet future synths goofing around in the background, but too lame, too late. There's the beloved/hated (just my personal preference on this particular birdsong) crow cackle in the left speaker around 2:00 - I don't think it's farfetched to say this is a not-too-subtle Dim Mak homage. Wakeman's delivery of the word "Guinevere" is almost as incomprehensible as Danzig's take on "Vampira" and much more giggle inducing. This track is all around same-y and something that a chick from another era would probably get down to. The best portion begins at 4:00 when the midget space worms present themselves from their gestation chamber and regale the gathered patrons with their mating song, weemp-whoomped out with joy and lechery in their native tongue. Though this is a track only for the die-hards, it goes out in class, using the "slowing the tape down" effect to gradually and quickly drop the pitch of the fruity chorus we just spent the whole song begging to quit imitating castratos.

SIR LANCELOT AND THE BLACK KNIGHT* Holy moly! This is cheese prog the way it's meant to be done! After the phenomenal and manly "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!" intro chant, the deliciously dextrous keys take turns with a fervent and testicled singer to craft a fetus-shredding verse. I can't even express how much how the "WHOOH" horn that accompanies the final beat of every sung line during the verses. This cataclysmic energy doesn't let up, all the way through a blazing keyboard solo that makes the wee space larva from the previous track cry to mommy. The best bits from earlier in the song are recycled, generating a medival prog epic that will stand the test of time.

MERLIN THE MAGICIAN Opens with some choral nonsense, this probably sounds cool if you are 5 or if you go to church. Much like The third track, just when the first bit of nonsense lets up, our optimism is punished with yet more nonsense. If I wanted to hear clean piano being played proficiently, I wouldn't have moved out of Mom's house (SHE HAS A PIANO AND I CAN PLAY IT SO EASY). Some three-dimensional sounds appear around 3:15 that attempt to save this slug of a song, but they're not really annihilating the faux-ivory-tickling we've heard in the previous two tracks, making this feel like a useless song built around a mediocre solo. Something so imcomprehensibly terrible that I cannot put it into words happens at 4:50; the only good thing I can say this fifty seconds of terror is that it sort of reminds me of a stage in Super Mario World. More volume-filling, mind-expanding laser solos make me smile towards the end, but my smile is shattered and I am plunged into irreparable depravity as the Mario-esque nonsense returns for a torturous reprise.

SIR GALAHAD I guess Wakeman has a boner for choral intros, but even if I'd had any sort of stiffness, these intros would act as an all too tight condom. After the requisite intro and mellow pre-song nonsense that is becoming a recurring motif, some more nonsense that was probably intended to cause booties to boogie appears, complelling my already flaccid member to desire a safe haven where it can be softened no more. This song is all over the place: not in the worst way possible, but in a way that I don't want to commit more than a few words to the attention-whoring chicanery. Basically, they build it up so you feel like some posers are about to be forcibly removed from the hall, but after the badical buildup, the posers are instead taken by the club owner into the VIP room where they wine and dine our collective sisters.

THE LAST BATTLE There was a smooth segue from the prior track into this nine-minute goliath, so I didn't notice the track change. Our sisters having such a blast and get wasted on champagne probably wasn't helping my focus, either. Not too much on this mediocre and paradoxically non-epic track that we haven't heard yet. Some vocal scat nonsense arrives at 2:47 in an obvious tribute to Katamari Damacy. This last track is clearly dedicated to nap-inducing rather than bombast; I say skip it.

Summary Some fun tracks, some duds, and many cool moments. Many less blastbeats than advertized.

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Progressive Rock Album.......2006-06-29

Believe it or not, it was my mom that introduced me to this album. She told me that when she was about my age she had it on tape and loved it. Since then I wanted it and I have finally got it. I really don't think to many people have heard of Rick Wakeman's solo projects. I'm sure they know him from Yes and the album he did with Black Sabbath but not of his own works, I could be wrong though. From what I've gathered, this is his third album the first being The six Wives Of Henry VIII and the second Journey To The Center Of The Earth. If this album is any indacation of how good his solo works are, I need to pick those other two up. On to the music. The story is about Arthur and his companions and their many exploits and I think he loosly based this album on Thomas Mallory's Le Morte D'Arthur in particular. This album shows that Wakeman is a master (if not the master) of the synthisizer and keyboard. Each song is distinct from the previous which is good in my book. And while there isn't a whole lot of singing, the songs themselves do a good job of telling the story and characters. I just love the different arrangements that go with the different characters, especially Merlin and Guinevere. Plus Rick is accompinied by an orchrastra and The English Chamber Choir which is totaly cool. I've read some reviews saying that some of the singing isn't that great but I have to disagree. While it's not the best singing I've ever heard it's still pretty good. The use of jazz and fusion jazz is also good and in my opinion really helps this already excellent album out. If I have any complaints it is that this album is too short and that it comes with no lyrics. For the first, it doesn't really matter because even though it is over forty-two minutes, I've got other cds that are good but are shorter. And as for the lyrics, I'll get over it because there isn't a whole lot of singing and what singing that is there is pretty much understandable. Definitely an excellent album that shouldn't be passed up.

4 out of 5 stars Big Noise from Waimea and Beyond.......2007-06-29

I bought these CD second, even though it was the first one released. Again I really enjoyed it as well, some great stuff here. Here you'll find Jim Messina(pre-Loggins & Messina)with his group the Jesters. Also a couple of great songs by a group called the Chandelles(El Gato & the Jetster) It pays to read the liner notes, you really get some great info into the time period and what was going on with theses groups. Also, a couple of songs from the hard to find "Original Surfaris" first Surf album. And the story behind them and the more well known So. Cal group we're all familiar with that released "Wipe Out", "Surfer Joe", etc..If you love the California West Coast sound, start collecting these CD's. It will help you fill in the musical gaps.

Does not do well at all in the digital cd system in my car. Sounds horrible. Needs remastering to conform to the new systems.

Hard hitting, laid back style and makes you ready to catch the next big wave!
    Worth the purchase....great tunes!

5 out of 5 stars great compilation of lesser known surf music.......2004-08-25

.........my title says it all. Great stuff here by some of the lesser knowns. But great nevertheless. If you like surf music, get this. I probably have over 70 CD's of surf music and this is one of the best. 'Nuff said.

    5 out of 5 stars 60's surf trip!.......2004-04-11

This is excellent collection of songs. The songs are very lively and entertaining. The most stunning thing about this CD is the reproduction quality. A lot of the songs sound like like they were just recently recorded, the audio is that good. You can hear the big influence Dick Dale had with other musicians on this CD. Their second CD "lost legends of surf guitar 2" has less surf oriented tunes with more hot rod songs, it makes me wonder if I should bother buying the third CD of this collection. The pyramids had one of the top surf tunes in "penetration" but the two pyramid tunes on here just sound like copies of that tune with the same minor sounding desending riff. This is an exciting collection of songs for all surf music fans. I also recommend their second CD even though it has hot-rod tunes.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Good collection!.......2007-06-03

This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.

Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Legends of Country Music:Classic Hits of the 50's,60's&70's.......2007-05-09

If you like country music from this era it is a good sample. Many top ten hits.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful old songs remembered.......2007-01-18

My Parents and my Sister are all enjoying these songs from the days when we remembered Country Legends. This CD Collection is tremendous... has all of the greats on it. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the good "old" songs.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe how many great songs are on this set.......2006-12-16

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.

    I hope there's a Volume II.

5 out of 5 stars GREATS HITS. HECK - EVEN THE MISSES ARE GOOD!!.......2006-12-13

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2007-01-06

I bought this CD for my daughters, ages 5&6, who are studying ancient civilizations. What a great way to bring hisory and classic literature alive!! Benedict Flynn did an excellent job - we enjoyed the way he changed his voice to become different characters, he is definitely not monotone. Both my girls have listened to the set over and over again. It was and still is enjoyed by the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars A great audiobook for the entire family.......2004-05-16

This audio version of Odysseus is exciting and detailed enough to be interesting to adult listeners but fully engaged my three sons, ages 9,8 and 7. Now my first grader makes references to "the lotus eaters" and my fourth grader was shocked when I couldn't remember who Polydemus was (he's the Cyclops). A good introduction to a classic tale; perfect for a long car trip.
