Cinema Passion

Musical director and conductor for the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra, as well as a composer in his own right, Shardad indubitably has an ear for a melody. On the descriptively titled Cinema Passion, he reworks film themes from some of the movie industry's best-known composers, highlighting the particular qualities of each. James Horner's overplayed "My Heart Will Go On" has been stripped of Celine Dion's vocals and arranged with an emphasis on piano, while John Williams's theme for Sabrina is arranged for solo piano, which emphasizes its homage to Chopin. However, Shardad hasn't neglected his classics; his version of "Raindrops" from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a positive toe-tapper, Henry Mancini is well represented with selections from Breakfast at Tiffany's and Charade, and "Maria" from West Side Story is complemented by the love theme from Romeo and Juliet. One should also not fail to mention Beethoven's "Berto Surto #8," which appeared on the Age of Innocence soundtrack and sounds almost out of place among the more modern selections; on the other hand, perhaps it will encourage the listener to sample other classical music, which is all to the good. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Bravissimo Bella Anita.......2001-11-01

Simply put, enough cannot be said. Anita Gravine is a brilliant singer & musician.

5 out of 5 stars Bellissimo!!.......1999-04-30

Anita Gravine not only brings a fresh perspective to Jazz, but her passion and respect for the artform and her immesurable talent shine through in this masterpiece. With a beauty that few modern singers have, and a deep knowledge of the roots that have made Jazz America's greatest cultural achievent, Ms. Gravine's works touch like few others. The arrangements are masterful, and by bringing her love of the Italian cinema to jazz fans worldwide, she has truly given us all something to cherish. BRAVO!!

5 out of 5 stars sophisticated, imaginative, and very musical!.......1999-04-08

This is one of the best (and best executed) ideas for a vocal album in years. The titles may be unfamiliar, but they're as well-written as any standard in the American Popular Songbook: lyrical songs, intelligent words, sympathetic and smart arrangements by the great Mike Abene. And Anita Gravine, one of the most underappreciated jazz-influenced singers, brings a sense of great passion without ever losing control of the music or the meaning. If you haven't heard her before, to me, she's a cross between Sarah Vaughan and the wonderful Frances Wayne (who sang with Woody Herman's First Herd of the middle-'40s). If you like the "good" singers doing the "good" songs, do yourself a favor -- try some Lights, Camera, Passion!

3 out of 5 stars Elevator Music?? ....So What???.......2003-02-10

Richard Clayderman has interpreted more pop songs on piano than any other artist I know. This album is no. 4 in a 6 series collection set. There are two medleys here one being 'Maria/Tonight/ and America. The other medley featuring 'Lady In Red/Take My Breath Away' doesn't work well. Too bad 'Lady In Red' wasn't a single unit as it's a beautiful tune. A totally different tempo to 'Moon River' makes it very interesting. The only thing might have improved this gem is a chorus. 'People' sounds very very good. All in all, not a bad
listen. Beware - on my copy selection no. 8 is supposed to be 'Exodus' but is 'The Way We Were'.
