Customer Reviews:
A most excellent CD.......2003-12-01
This is a heartwarming mix of Phil's excellent musicianship and his devotion to his family and his faith. By the 3rd or 4th time you listen to this CD, Phil will have you enthralled by the masterpiece of his musicianship, his wisdom as a husband and father, and his faith in the one true God. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who just "has an ear" to listen -to great music, and to great lyrics. You will thoroughly enjoy Phil's music! Trust me on this one.
I actually liked the previous (cassette) version better..........2003-07-17
This is a beautiful album, but some songs are "updates" of the originals from the first release of Way Back Home (which was never available on CD, unfortunately). I was disappointed with this, but I'll still buy this CD--I especially love "New Star" and "Olivia".
A tribute to God and family that rocks........2003-01-08
Too bad you can't see Keaggy play guitar -- I have -- and his body language and musicianship exhibits praise for his muse. Still you can listen, and his work here is buoyant. If you have moved away from where you grew up, and would like to rekindle sweet memories of your hometown, just listen once and let your mind wander back. If you are a parent of boy or girl, it doesn't matter, Keaggy's "Father Daughter Harmony" illustrates why contemporary children need not follow the suit of eye-rolling sitcom kids, who instead can feel the glee of being with their parents. And the final track, which Keaggy overlays with guitar work, is an old reel-to-reel recording of his grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary, which took place in '49, a year before Keaggy's birth. It is what one would imagine if Studs Terkel provided sound tracks for his books. I gave my copy of this CD away, and didn't have the heart to ask for it back (they enjoyed it so much), so I bought two more (just in case I wanted to loan out another copy.)
adam @ OR.......2000-03-24
I have over 25 of Phil's albums, and I consider this one to be his very best. Why? The music focuses on Phil's family, his faith, and is at once soothing and appealing. Especially notable are the songs that are taken from other writers' words. Great examples of this are "Could've Been Me", "In Every Need" and "Once I Prayed". Of course, Phil's excellent guitar work is evident in abundance throughout the album. Phil's voice has never sounded better. This work will appeal to anyone who enjoys songs that are meaningful, but can even be enjoyed as background music. A must have for Phil's fans.
Some of his best work.......1999-11-08
Occasionally uneven collection but contains what is arguably Keaggy's greatest songwriting (his most underrated attribute): Maker of the Universe, Here and Now, Let Everything Else Go, Noah's Song. Maker of the Universe is worth the price of the CD alone. If you like Keaggy's songwriting and his mellow side, this is his best CD Other than the outstanding 2CD collection of his Jesus Freak period -- What a Day/Love Broke Through.

Gibson Brothers - Long Way Back Home.......2007-01-29
I do not regret this purchase. The titles on the CD meet my expectations.
Good country stuff.
Long Way Back Home deserves a huge and growing audience.......2004-11-01
Long Way Back Home is my first Gibson Brothers CD. I unconditionally love their music and lyric. Their "Mountain Song" words and rhythm beautifully inspire my clogging interests. "Callie's Reel" is a magnificent follow up. I am looking forward to choregraphing two dances to go with these two songs. I so love this CD I am going to look into their other CDs. Thanks for writing, playing and using one of Roy Hurd's songs that brought me to your site. Becky
Highly innovative bluegrass pop-folk.......2004-04-10
One of the most refreshingly original and pleasant-sounding new albums in the Americana and bluegrass fields... The Gibsons place solid 'grassy picking inside a warm, good-natured country-folk fusion, refining the efforts made by progressive newgrassers in the 1970s, hitting the magical stride that folks like Earl Scruggs and New Grass Revival were looking for all those years. In addition to a tone of finely-crafted originals, they also have several well-chosen covers, such as a version of The Band's "Ophelia" and "Satan's Jeweled Crown," from the Louvin Brothers catalogue. Bluegrass purists in search of hot picking and drag-race instrumental pyrotechnics won't like this album, but for folks who are interested in hearing new, well-written material and who are open to singer-songwriter influences, this album will be a long-lived favorite. Highly recommended!
full, visceral brand of bluegrass.......2004-04-02
From the town of Ellenburg Depot in the Champlain Valley in upstate New York., The Gibson Brothers emerged on the music scene in 1991 and put out albums on the Big Elm, Hay Holler and Ceili labels early in their music career. Their "traditional music with a twist" has won them many fans and a 1998 award for "Emerging Artist of the Year." In 2002, they signed with Sugar Hill Records and released the highly acclaimed "Bona Fide" in 2003. When not performing, Leigh is a dairy farmer, and Eric is a school teacher.
Their sophomore effort on the Sugar Hill label, "Long Way Back Home," continues their formula of a full, visceral brand of bluegrass built around the brothers' duet singing and songwriting. This disc consists of seven originals. Leigh Gibson contributes Dreams That End Like This, Any Man in His Right Mind, and I Gotta Get Back To You. Eric Gibson composed The Way I Feel, I'm not Wanted Here, and He'd Take Her Back Again. Drawing inspiration from the Adirondacks on a beautiful spring day, Eric collaborated with Roy Hurd to pen "Callie's Reel." In each case, the song's author sings lead with his brother singing harmony. The only number with three-part harmony (courtesy of Alan Bartram) is "I'm not Wanted Here." Although brother duet singing is a large part of their signature sound, I'd encourage them to consider a few more songs with additional harmony on future releases. Maybe even invite their little sis, Erin, back into the vocal mix now and then as they did on the "Bona Fide" album? Besides the traditional "East Bound Train," the band covers of songs by Kieran Kane, Gordon Lightfoot, Jackson Leap, Jaime Robbie Robertson, Chris Jones, and Edgar Edens.
Leigh Gibson plays guitar and sings. Eric Gibson plays banjo, lead guitar, and sings. The brothers are once again joined by their talented bass player Mike Barber and mandolinist Marc MacGlashan. Special guests include Jason Carter (fiddle), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Rob Ickes (dobro), Russ Pahl (steel guitar), Sam Zucchini (percussion), and Alan Bartram (harmony vocal). Another difference from the "Bona Fide"project is the band's increasing use of drums and steel guitar. These three original cuts (Dreams that End Like This, Any Man in his Right Mind, He'd Take Her Back Again) clearly show their distinctive, countrified stamp to some of their contemporary material. Now, with veteran experience to supplement their youthful energy, the Gibson Brothers' fame as bluegrass and country stars continues to grow. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
Gibson Brothers Do It Again!.......2004-03-25
I did not think that 2003's "Bona Fide" could be topped -- I was wrong! The boys' trademark harmonies are in full force, the writing superb, and the musicianship fresh. Do not be surprised when it is nominated for a Grammy -- it is that good.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Customer Reviews:
The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02
Many composers have chosen to perform their own material and commit it to discs, with mixed results. Only with Noel Coward do we feel that a good deal of the charm of his numbers lies in the very way he performs them. For proof, we now have the Naxos Nostalgia
(8.120529), which dishes up 16 tracks of the ultra-refined son of W. S.Gilbert, giving us six selections from "This Year of Grace," one from "Bittersweet," a medley of treasures from his "Cavalcade," another from his other works, and a few other trifles that are better than most of what is written today.
Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.
The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

Customer Reviews:
The Brass Band Marches on with Ives.......2005-05-28
The concept of transcriptions of music originally written for various instruments, orchestras, voices, piano etc goes back a long time. Ensembles comprised solely of winds, or brass, or strings gather various transcriptions (at times those of the composers who wrote the original score!) and make their repertoire more varied in adding such new insights. Such is the case with the Detroit Chamber Winds under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds and this very interesting CD is devoted to the music of Charles Ives.
Ives had great respect for brass ensembles and wrote music expressly for them. These are included as are a number of works for chamber orchestra etc. The collection is played beautifully and the recorded sound is excellent. With some reservations this 'Remembrance: A Charles Ives Collection' is not only successful but a fine addition to the Ives recordings.
Perhaps just returning from a performance of 'The Unanswered Question' performed by the LA Philharmonic with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting where the mystery and spirit of Emerson's poem "The Sphynx" which inspired Ives to write this brief 6-minute piece colors this listener's full appreciation of these transcriptions. Originally scored for strings, four flutes, and trumpet (in the wondrous Disney Hall acoustics Salonen stood alone on the stage conducting the off stage strings, the flutes in the organ loft and the trumpet in the highest balcony in a three way conversation that seemed to come both from within the bodies of the audience and the ether of the universe, this work fails to hold the importance of the solo brass instrument playing against a brass ensemble. A small quibble perhaps, but some of Ives' works were specifically designated for certain instruments and defy tampering.
In all a recording to add to the Ives Collection and one that is certainly well performed. Grady Harp, May 05
A great collection.......2003-05-12
A great collection of wind pieces by Charles Ives arranged, transcribed, edited, and realized in a number of fashions. The songs run the gamut of Ives's career and his many styles, the latter half of the disc dedicated to selections from his Brass Serenade.
Many of these pieces, most in fact, are difficult to find anywhere else, and are of enormous interest. One of Ives's earliest pieces, "Holiday Quickstep," for instance. There are also engaging interpretations of his more esoteric and mysterious works (The Unanswered Question, Ann Street), personal pieces written for piano and soprano (Remembrance, Evening, Mists), tone poems, and more lively, sometimes comic, sketches (Gyp the Blood or Hearst, Tarrant Moss). The performances, by the Detroit Chamber Winds, are energetic and gratifying. For most of the stuff on this disc, however, there is very little to compare it to.
This is an immensley charming collection of short pieces that any Ives fan is sure to value.
