Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eerie and dark music for the soul.......2007-03-08

Midnight Syndicate's 13th HOUR is the perfect album to listen to while you write; its dark mood and somber atmosphere are inspiring to me when I write a horror tale. It also serves as great background music to your Halloween party or gothic evening among friends.

This was the first album I got from them and I want all the others too because I'm hooked now. They recently re-released their early works under the title OUT OF THE DARKNESS. Also, check out VAMPYRE and GATES OF DELIRIUM.

Whether you're the Goth type or a casual fan wanting some cool music to set the ambiance at a party, 13th HOUR is an awesome symphonic horror album.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-03

I write gothic horror stories and love to listen to music that "puts me into another world". I'm so glad that I found this CD. It has definately inspired some of my best writing.

5 out of 5 stars great music.......2007-01-11

used for a Halloween party, it was perfect really set the mood

5 out of 5 stars very cool.......2007-01-10

I'm a halloween fan from wayyy back and this is the best cd I've found for just the occasion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Atmospheric c.d........2007-01-08

We had this playing in all the rooms of our house during our Halloween party last year, all the tracks going in different order in a continuous loop. This set quite a mood! Everyone commented on the music and how great it was. Just the right amount and use of sound effects. So many Halloween type c.d.'s go too far and become just corny and that wrecks the mood you're trying to create in the first place. After the party, when everyone left but for my cousins and us, we just had this playing in the library and had a ball scaring the wits out of each other with our own "personal" ghost stories. We're not into the whole goth culture thing, but we can appreciate what M.S. is doing. To listen to this at only Halloween is a mistake, you're short changing yourself. Put this on curled up with you're favorite suspense, thriller or horror book for an added dimension to the experience.

Album Description

MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE brings you the first-ever officially licensed soundtrack to the roleplaying classic that started it all.

Ancient underground temples, dark knights, mysterious labyrinths, sorcerors, forgotten tombs, enchanted forests, and creatures await you on this new release containing over an hour of orchestral music from the masters of gothic/horror soundscape. It's the ultimate musical accompaniment to the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS roleplaying game, and promises to take listeners on an epic adventure through the darkest corners of their imagination.

Working closely with the game designers at Wizards of the Coast, this CD is a simple yet dynamic way for gamers to take their adventuring sessions to the next level.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Dungeon Master's opinion.......2005-05-17

This disc really delivers! Not only is it great background for gaming sessions but the music definitely stands on it's own as cool listening/driving music. Dynamic pieces, a lot of instrumental variety, and just enough sound effects to enhance the mood.

As far as it's application to a game situation - I have to say this is the best fantasy RPG soundtrack I've ever heard (that seems to be the general consensus from the other DMs I've talked to on the convention circuit). The other soundtrack attempts before this one really pale in comparison in my opinion.

When I have the time, I like to go through all of my soundtracks and piece together a custom soundtracks for my games. This disc mixed with some Conan and any of the LOTR scores makes for a powerful combo.

More than often I don't have the time to devote to that. I'm pleased to say that in every session where I've JUST played this disc in the background, it's worked very well. A bit on the dark side but for a dungeon crawl I can think of no better music.

5 out of 5 stars The coolest Gaming and Riding.......2005-01-21

I went to Amazon looking for more afordable book than the ones I had just bougth at Hastings and suddenly, I met a CD by the name of Dungeons and Dragons. I was not a Midnight Syndicate fan before mind you, but after hearing this CD in converted and now I am looking forward to gettineg other CDs by them. The tracks in it are great 2/3 of them are not gloomy or rather mysterious. But this makes sence when you are "descending into the depths" or looking in a secret chamber. I love the"Prelude" because it sets the mood of a Fantasy like wolrd, the harp is really cool too. I loved "Craft of the Wizard" and the one also after that. It is like a march and then there is some catapults hurling stones. I also like the sword sound effects. They sound metally but hey most swords are thin (except Claymores):> But the Best song of them all would have to be "City of Sails" It is great, It sounds like Final Fantasy VIII a little but its great. The great thing about this music is that you can picture the action thats going on. I pictured myself riding a horse to victory. It is also great listening to it while in the car, especially in the morning because it wakes you up and puts you in a "triumphant" mood. Also I wrote some poetry while listening to "Ruins of Bone Hill" and when i read it aloud with the music it gave it a great effect.

So all in all This is One of the few great buys that i have loved right off the bat.
I hope you enjoy it as well.

3 out of 5 stars A GameMaster's Review.......2004-10-12

I agree in great part with the review by Ryan Marshall. I'll note that I have not listened to any other Midnight Syndicate works before this one, but I am making an effort to be objective.
My favorite tracks are the two `bonus' tracks, Ruins of Bone Hill and City of Sails.

The quality of this music (if you don't mind that it's synthesized and can appreciate this sort of thing) is a 4/5, which is a fairly high rating from me.

But as far as this music can be applied to roleplaying is a 2/5 at best...

Here's the problems:

1) The music all seems to have the dark/eerie flavor that seems to be the staple of Midnight Syndicate. This severely limits the themes, moods, and instrument sets that were used. The only exception is City of Sails. While this does not detract from the quality of the music itself, it would still be nice to have more variety in a collection that is supposedly `official roleplaying music'.

2) I rarely found that the intended setting for each track actually suited the music, but the sound effects that were included made it unusable for anything else.
For example, Beasts of the Borderland seemed to me to be a great track for an army on the march, until I started hearing strange `beast' noises that seemed out of place.

3) Speaking of out of place sound effects, I found that many of the sound effects were ambiguous, unfulfilling, or outright mood-spoiling.
For example, in both Skirmish and Final Confrontation, you hear the `clash of swords' at certain times. However, these `swords' sound like pieces of tin slapping against one another with minimal force rather than actual swords. Who uses tin swords? Besides, not all `skirmishes' in roleplaying actually involve swords...

Side Note: Many portions of the melodies were familiar and some outright recognizable as being nearly identical to some of those used in older console RPGs. Perhaps it was from such games that they drew their inspiration. It would have to be a very big coincidence otherwise.

If you are a roleplayer and/or enjoy background music and aren't penny pinching or if you are a Midnight Syndicate fan, then you will probably want to buy this anyway. But I would not recommend this collection to anyone else.

4 out of 5 stars Midnight Syndicate Critique.......2004-09-22

I would give this product a 4 1/2 if I could. I will be honest, Its not the most spectacular album in the world, but it does fit its purpose exactly. From the core of your game until its over...You will enjoy this product completely! Th attitude and ambience it creates for RPG gamers (particularly D&D) just what the Master ordered. It fits extremely well into any game, as well as car or relaxation music. Overall: great product!

5 out of 5 stars Only a gamer can make a class act sound track........2004-08-17

Midnight syndicate does it again with their sound track for the D&D game. The music is thoughful, playful, and powerful. Perfect for any campaign or a drive in the car.
Once again it is a great feeling seeing another home grown product from the Midnight Syndicate. After all they started as gamers and have not forgotten their roots.

See them in person at their booth every Dragon Con in Atlanta Georgia.

Best:

5 out of 5 stars Did you know Amazon is anti-American? It's true - read more...........2006-08-16

There are thousands of classic rock cds that Amazon will not let you buy unless you go to one of their foreign sites and pay much more. For example, this Garage Rock Classics cd. I have a copy I would like to sell for less than those listed, but Amazon won't let me. Why? Because some mega-seller has gone to the English or other foreign site and listed this American-made cd and American-issued cd there. As soon as this happens it is removed from the Amazon catalog. To you, that means you pay more due to Amazon's anti-American policies. To me it means I bought I cd thinking I could sell it on Amazon and now I'm stuck. Unless you think the French and other should have more rights to our native cd's than we do, please consider letting Amazon know what you think of this costly policy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb disc of '60s garage rock.......2004-06-28

When Lenny Kaye put together the legendary double-LP "Nuggets" in the early '70s, he kicked off an anthologizing craze that's still going strong. Varese's producers navigate a rockin' line between the more well-known names of '60s garage rock and the sort of obscurities found on anthology series' like "Pebbles" and "Beyond the Grave." It's a winning mix, combining killer classics like Paul Revere & The Raiders "Just Like Me" and The Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie" with lesser-known gems like The Moving Sidewalks' "99th Floor" (featuring a young Billy Gibbons, later of ZZ Top) and The Litter's "Action Woman."

Followers of garage rock will know most these tracks, but given the regional fame of many singles, and the uneven quality of their anthological reissue over the years, there will be some nice surprises for even die-hard collectors. More importantly, those familiar only with the national hits will treasure this introduction to a broader sampling of mid-60s garage rock riches. This is a superb disc for charting a course to additional purchases (e.g., original album reissues and multi-disc box sets like "Nuggets" and "Nuggets II"), with 25 well-selected original tracks and liner notes from garage rock authority (and "Ugly Things" fanzine editor) Mike Stax.

Cuts 1-3, 9-12, 17-18, and 24 are true stereo, while the rest are AM-radio-ready mono. Tracks 26-28 were recorded live at the Cavestomp garage rock celebrations in 1999 and 2000, and show aging garage rockers - especially The Standells - to hang on to their mojo with impressive force.

Can't believe that no one else has ever bothered to review this CD reissue. Also didn't know this short-lived band had just one actual lp out.Total of sixteen tracks, likely that it's probably Syndicate Of Sound's entire repertoire or at least close to it.Originally put out in 1966,as most of you might remember the snappy two-and-a-half minute ditty "Little Girl",apparently their sole hit.Other happening cuts here include "I'm Alive","Dream Baby","Lookin' For The Good Times",the should've-been-a-hit "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby?" and "Upper Hand".Basically, just good garage rock&roll.Line-up:Don Baskin-guitar&vocalist,Jim Sawyer-guitar,John Sharkley-guitarist&keyboardist,Bob Gonzalez-bass and John Duckworth-drums.Should appeal to fans of Music Machine,The Seeds,Count Five,Standells and The Leaves.

Midnight Syndicate once again takes you on a musical journey through the darkest corners of your imagination. Dim the lights, but take heed... what darkness conjures, the night harbors."

Following the tremendous success of "Born of the Night," Midnight Syndicate presents "Realm of Shadows," their third CD featuring the unique blend of haunting orchestration and sound effects that has made them a rising force in gothic-horror music today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful earlier works.......2007-07-11

This is by far one of my favorite albums from the group. I would highly recommend this album as one to have someone listen to start any sort of interest with the group.

3 out of 5 stars Realm of mediocrity.......2007-04-29

I must say that in investigating the world of Midnight Syndicate over the past year I found that this CD seems to be the most-talked about, highly-praised and least available of their releases. Now, that I have it in my possession (the 5th Midnight Syndicate CD I have bought in 10 months) I find it to be kind of bland compared to Gates Of Delirium and The 13th Hour (although it's a step up from Born Of The Night which walks the fence between creepy and corny). While the mood and sound effects on Realm Of Shadows are nice (the crows on the CD made me think I had one trying to build a nest on my balcony), there are really no tracks that stand out. They all just kind of run together. I'm not saying it's awful. Like most things in life, it just doesn't live up to the hype.

5 out of 5 stars This was officially my first Midnight Syndicate CD....Life hasn't been the same since..........2007-02-02

You know, little did I know as I walked by this particular booth at a convention what I was listening to was going to affect me in the profound way that it did. A CD called Vampyre was playing and I stopped dead in my tracks and listened. It was simply beautiful. I asked the man at the booth if he had anything that might be appropriate for a graveyard? He recommended this CD. I also bought what was playing and didn't think twice about it. *This*, REalm of Shadows, was the first official CD that I listened to by this band known as Midnight Syndicate. I was completely transfixed by the music. I never sat down until several tracks later. I was officially crying my heart out by the second track saying "oh my God..this is so beautiful.." over and over.
That night, I didn't want to sleep. I wanted to keep listening to my new CDs as many times possible. I had never heard anything like this in my life. Before exhaustion took over I told myself I must not let the man selling these wonderful CDs get away without selling me the other two he had available! All I knew was, that I was slapped by so much inspiration that it literally hurt. Something long lost and dead inside me was reborn the night before. I saw so many images that needed to be created as a result of listening to this music. Midnight Syndicate became my instant muse. Soundtrack for the Imagination Indeed!
This review has little to say about particular tracks, but rather the over all emotion of experiencing this band's music for the first time in my own home. The peace I felt(despite the dark nature of the music). The mental images of my own yard haunt that hit me randomly in an almost *Field of Dreams* way so entangled that I had to built it to put the pieces together. Not to mention the images that came to me to simply put to canvas. I hadn't had ANY thing like this in my life that moved me to be more creative in my own life. I am thankful for this band and I will forever be dedicated to it. Thank you Ed and Gavin....

5 out of 5 stars Realm of Goth.......2006-11-29

"Realm of Shadows" (2000) is Midnight Syndicate's second dose of "haunting orchestrations and sinister sound effects (creating) a dark, gothic soundscape." Having purchased all of their CDs (twice - for work and personal use) and using their music (with their permission, of course) as soundtracks for our local Halloween haunted attractions, I can honestly say that I will always be anticipating their next release.

As with "Born of the Night" (see my review), the production quality of this CD was outstanding. The music is stirring and the sound effects are realistic. The raven calls in track #9 "Ravens Hollow," the synthesized strings in track #12 "Spectral Mist," and the creaking timbers in track #20 "Harbored Souls" are particularly noteworthy. I actually prefer Syndicate's limited use of vocal effects, which normally come off as "cheesy" attempts to sound creepy. And once again, the bell tones in track #13 "Soliloquy" and track #21 "Eclipse" should have been digitally sampled instead of using tubular bells.

There are 21 selections totaling a little more than 52 minutes of music. Most of the tracks would have benefited from lengthening and building upon the base music and effects- they left me wanting more. The best tracks on this CD are #9 "Raven's Hollow," #10 "Beyond the Gates," #15 "Serpent's Lair," #19 "Witching Hour," and #20 "Harbored Souls."

As with their previous CD, this music begs to be played on a high-quality sound system, preferably one with some kick-butt subwoofers and enough power to handle this CD's wide dynamic range. Otherwise, listen with care on less-capable systems before you crank up the volume.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully crafted piece, both chilling and inspiring.......2005-04-20

Enter the realm where shadows lurk and nightmares reign. Beware of long passed souls unsettling before your eyes as you listen to the dark and eerie tale of Raven's Hallow.

A must have for those who want a chill with a little story in the mix.

5 out of 5 stars Heavyweight true champion.......2001-03-21

This CD is one of 3 samplers from the Blood & Fire label. A great collage of artists and masterpieces of music mixed together to form this lp. With Tappa Zukie, King Tubby, Burning Spear and many others, you will not be disappointed. Its filled with the creme de la creme of heavy sounds of the reggae era, the "golden" age of reggae. Its a must have!!

5 out of 5 stars Guilty as Charged.......2006-10-02

These kingpins of the deadliest, most serious dub have a long and large criminal record, so if you are seeking out just an example of their charge-sheet you could just as well start with this. Murder Tone is a great introduction to the Syndicate's underworld of heavy duty sound explosions, as you will find many of their tastiest plates in evidence.

Produced by the incomparable Adrian Sherwood, you will find the Syndicate running a serious racket on this prime piece of contraband.

Even if the Syndicate might murder me for saying so, who would question a band with musicians named, inter alia, Crocodile, Eskimo Fox, Bubblers, and Bingy Bunny?

In a lineup of truly criminal tones, the guiltiest are Red Sea, Version, Let the Spirit Rise, The Precinct of Sound, Lack of Education, Reggae Raga and Night Train. This killer certainly hits the target.

If you have ever owned any Dub Syndicate disc and enjoyed it at all -- BUY THIS ONE! I'm a huge On-U freak, own a vast majority of the releases, incl. all Dub Syndicate CDs. This is a high-quality collection of 17 rare/unreleased cuts and reconstructed tracks, (over 79 minutes!) finding the skills of Sherwood and Style at an all-time "high." The production and remastering is (stoned) immaculate. Even out of my boombox at work the sounds swirl around in blissful dubbingness. Features Scratch on a couple tracks, and even a Gilligan's Island quote from the guitar of (I believe) Skip McDonald. (!) While this could be viewed as a retrospective, I sure hope this does not represent the end of output from this brilliant collaborative. Their latest all-new release "Acres of Space" is the strongest of all.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a great cd..........2001-10-10

This is a great cd,but dont expect any pounding heavy dub workouts like some other On U stuff, this is quite a restrained affair, sparse and melancholic...that is where its power lies ,in its splintered echo and plaintive keyboard patterns. Its an intriguing cd, and draws you in as it progresses, reflective and thoughtful...
Historically,ON U had a lot of difficulty being accepted by the London reggae community in the late 70's....people generally thought that roots music produced anywhere outside Kingston JA,just couldnt be the real deal, and on u had further difficulties in that their sound engineer,Adrian Sherwood, horror of horrors, was white! To increase their difficulties, onu were taking a downright weird approach to dubwize, which orthodox roots fans found difficult to accept.History in retrospective tho,has viewed the whole story VERY differently, and it is now acknowledged that good reggae CAN come out of places other than JA (See Pressure Sounds release for great UK roots album,"Dont call us Immigrants").Also,ONU employed the best of the best uk/ja roots talent...the radics, congos,Creation Rebel,Dennis Bovell,Prince Far I,all got involved in the ONU experiment....ON U pre empted so much of the weirdness present in sounds like Xterminator label, distorted ragga dubs, junglist and drum and bass tunes...
This cd is excellent, but due to its poignant and restrained mood, maybe it isnt the best example, for those uninitiated, into the onu vibe...Its charm for me its its real landscape sparseness, and endless minimalist echo, with lonely keyboard pieces weaving in and out of the mix...a perfect cd for a long journey,or to carry you over into dreams....For pounding heavy onu vibes?Try "Stoned Immaculate",or "Pounding Systems",both by top notch members of JA and UK roots reggae fraternity. Some of the criticism of Adrian Sherwood's work is definitely justified ,but he also definitely deserves a respectable place in the hallowed annals of roots reggae history...He really did create good sounds,as "One way System" proves.Yeah, nice and subtle.

3 out of 5 stars More minimal than most On-U stuff........2000-10-20

"Socca," the opening cut, begins with some fairly steady percussion, growing gradually more textured as a bass slowly materializes in the mix -- a very quiet bass, really. The CD doesn't start sounding like any sort of reggae, let alone dub, for a couple of minutes, and even then -- once keyboards and horns cut in -- the music remains much more spare and simple, and even *colder,* than most dub I've heard. It doesn't sound remotely like other Dub Syndicate releases like the LIVE 1991 thing or ECHOMANIA, either, which are much richer and varied. The remainder of the album follows the same pattern --some sort of dub minimalism has been undertaken on this release, leaving a LOT of space around and between the notes unfilled, and noticeably so. That makes it kind of INTERESTING, but certainly NOT the best place you could begin exploring this band. If I hadn't heard their much more engaging other releases, mentioned above, this CD might have made me think twice about exploring the band further, which indeed would have been unfortunate... If you don't know Dub Syndicate, the LIVE 1991 thing is a much better starting point, also interesting in that there really aren't that many good dub CDs that have been recorded live.

    5 out of 5 stars A DUB LANDMARK.......2002-03-04

An influential mid-80's dub set from Adrian Sherwood's On-U-Sound label. Dub Syndicate is primarily Roots Radics drummer Style Scott, producer Sherwood and a fluid list of collaborators from inside and outside the fraternity of other On-U-Sound collectives (African Head Charge, Creation Rebel etc).

Apart from the usual suspects this album is notable for the contributions of ex-PIL members Jah Wobble and Keith Levine and took dub into some previously unchartered waters, using innovative production techniques and incorporating an eclectic mix of musical elements.

It features sometimes disorientating but always meticulously assembled layers of sound built around On-U-Sound's trademark heavy bass and drums, punctuated with liberal doses of fx and vocal samples, and was ahead of most people's tastes at the time. Artists like Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus) and Sub Dub are still catching up.

I'm not sure if this or "Stoned immaculate" is my favourite Dub Syndicate album, but as I'm from Yorkshire, the fact that it contains a track called "Geoffrey Boycott" probably swings it for "Tunes from the missing channel". Go forth and purchase!
