A step back.......2005-10-23

The Last Poets...took me a step back in time. Their words are just as relevant today as when I first heard them...taking the time to LISTEN to their poetry. It was a very turbulent time and the music reflects that. It makes you think. There is no guessing what the words mean or what the message is. The rhythm flows and the words go, describing with intensity the times in this world we live in. Yeah, sit down and listen. Have a cup of coffee; but WAKE UP! linda

The music was as expected and the rating of 3 stars is given for the oversize cardboard jewel case. CD producers you may get as cute as you would like but stop making CD in non-standard sizes you create a storage problem [which I guess you do not care about], that could be fixed if music came in the same width and hight.

I enjoyed the music, I saw them live for free at Temple University - Philadelphia, PA. in the 70's. It was good to hear the mood of the period and ideally it should never return, that kind of mood!

PROPHETIC STYLES UNDER A RADAR .......2005-04-22

"they say it's gold and so it turns into gold" said Antonio Buscamente in his book El Malcriado. The fact is that The Last Poets have been making thought provoking music longer than most people think. Their unique sound and prophetic style has been under the mainstream radar and yet influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix (who collaborated with The Last Poets)to Jadakiss. It isn't what you know but what you "know." as Bell Hooks phrased it.

Poets sophomore effort is excellent. Everything from love ballads to some pretty aggressive, straight forward rock n' roll. Don't wait to buy because you're afraid it won't live up to expectations. If you loved "Signs of Life", buy this album!

Why aren't they here?.......2007-02-02

Like many, I was originally turned on to Poets of the Fall by hearing their single "Late Goodbye" during the Max Payne 2 video game credits and being absolutely floored. It still seems like a silly place to discover a band, but who cares!
I own around 700 CD's, listen to XM radio, go to concerts as often as I can, and I write and play music. I can honestly say that Poets of the Fall spent way more time in my CD player than anyone else this past year, and if you listen to them, it is easy to see why. The musicianship is outstanding. Each song has a great hook that will have you singing along very quickly. The lead vocals and the harmonies are both beautiful and catchy and the lyrics will leave you anywhere from deeply contemplative in your listening to heartbroken or perhaps even to occasionally chuckling at the whimsicle observations of some of life's great questions. Not only that, but the production values are pristine, setting a standard for other bands to reach towards in their own projects.
There is not a single "bad" song on the CD, thought there are some that stand out more than others. Those that do stand out will keep you popping Poets into your system oveer and over again.
My only complaint is that they are still being overlooked by the American music conglomerates. Sure, there is a lot of great music in the US, but Finland has got it made with one of the greatest rock bands in the world right now in my opinion.

This album is amazing, the way all rock music should sound like. I too discovered this band from playing Max Payne 2 and after owning the first album I know I had to buy this one without question. So here's my review of all the tracks....

Fire - Great way to open an album, the guitar solo rocks and everything about this song is awesome.

Sorry Go Round - The second single from the album, sadly no music video was done to this song at least not to my knowledge. Pretty cool chorus, you'll find yourself singing along to this one while driving over the speed limit down the highway. (not that I'm encouraging that)

Carnival of Rust - WONDERFUL!!! I seriously can't get enough of this song, first single of the album and with good reason. I actually kinda like this one more than Late Goodbye (which is an excellent song btw) this one will definitely grab anyone's attention even if you aren't that much of a fan. Wondefully written, and I can definitely relate to the lyrics.

Locking Up The Sun - EXCELLENT choice for the third single and cool video btw. Everytime I hear this I just have to sing along and head bang as if I were part of the lucky Finland crowd that watch these guys play live.

Gravity - Pretty cool song, it sounds like many productive jam sessions from the sound of the riffs and drumming, cool guitar solo too, love it!

King of Fools - Very nice laid back song, beautifully written song.

Roses - This song puts a smile to my face when I hear it, good song to sing to your girlfriends guys.

Desire - Beautiful song, if I started a band this is something I would love to play to a crowd.

All The Way/4 U - WOW, I mean seriously WOW!!! This one has to be my favorite song from these guys, This is the kind of music I would love to be able to write and play live. This is another one of those songs that you'd want to dedicate to your girlfriends. It starts out mellow and slow, then climaxes to this powerful chorus that will just bring tears to your eyes. AMAZING SONG!!

Delicious - Another one of their fast paced songs that will get ya singing along and speeding down the freeway, cool song!

Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day - COOL! Nice intro, brings goosebumps down my arm when I hear this song. This song has a good message just like pretty much all of their songs do, especially if you're having a crappy day. Excellent rock riffs in this song, I can just see the people crowd surfing to this chorus.

Dawn - Great way to end the album, meloncholy feeling to this song but of course that doesn't hurt to have these type of songs. Nicely done!

So as you can tell I'm a huge fan from the US and I cannot get over how awesome these guys are, they must have had great influences to write beautiful songs like these. I hope these guys can come out to the US and play some concerts. Thanks POTF for writing such great songs.

From Finland with love..........2007-01-06

The great lyricists return with their follow-up album to "Signs of Life", which in my humble opinion surpasses their previous effort. Ever since my exposure to their music via Max Payne 2's ending theme, I have been hooked on these talented artists. This is one of the few CD's that you will come across that you could listen from beginning to end without encountering a bad song. My personal favorites on the CD are Carnival of Rust, Locking Up the Sun, Gravity, Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day, and Roses. Whenever they get their music released in the US, they'll be a big hit.

Finally I got it!!.......2006-12-16

I have been waiting a long time for this to become available on Amazon so I could get here in the US. I have been following this band since I first heard their song "Late Goodbye" from Max Payne 2. As with their first album, I got it here as soon as I could and have been listening to it non-stop. I cant get enough. This album to me is better than the first. The songs are a little bit faster paced than "Signs Of Life" which is a big plus for me. It did cost quite a but of money to get it here, but I think its well worth it if you are a fan.

This set was nominated for a Grammy and I certainly think it is worthy of winning. Rebekah Presson Mosby has compiled and produced an outstanding collection of some of the most important poets to date. To hear Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot and Gertrude Stein in their own voices is truly amazing. It's easy to get lost in the poetry, much nicer than listening to music while driving. I have all of Rebekah Presson Mosby's works and I think this set and Our Souls Have Grown Deep Like The Rivers are my two favorites.

Exellent for poetry lovers who don't have time to read and can listen while driving.

Excellent, mainly for the 1st and 2nd CDs.......2006-05-19

This is an excellent collection, worth having, but primarily for the first two CDs. (I wasn't aware any recording of Walt Whitman existed at all.)

Many of the recordings are surprising for the style of reading. Whitman's is one -- his accent made me gape. Likewise, the style of Yeats or Eliot is a real insight into how poetry was received in a different time.

I give the collection 4 stars instead of 5 for its unevenness. I can think of vastly more interesting people than Rebekah Presson Mosby to compile such a collection. And the selection of contemporary poets is erratic with glaring omissions and curious (even pointless) inclusions. Why three selections of Amiri Baraka (whose work I do like) but only one of Seamus Heaney? Or A.R. Ammons or John Ashberry or Adrienne Rich?

Sadly missing (a partial list and in no particular order): Louise Gluck, Nikki Giovanni, Mark Doty, Thomas Hardy, Marianne Moore, Philip Larkin, W.S. Merwin, Michael Ondaatje. (Of course, I have my own biases.)

And it would have been wonderful to hear some poets back to back on the same work. For example, William Butler Yeats and Galway Kinnell reading "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" (Yeats's work and one of Kinnell's favorites). Admittedly, this might be asking too much.

So, on balance, very worth having for the recordings of the late poets.

A Fantastic Album.......2007-06-29

Unlike most people, I discovered this incredible band hidden in the credits for 3DMark05, a PC benchmarking tool. I fell in love with "Lift", which is my favorite song on the album. The wonderful voice, the killer guitar riffs, and some sweet mixing all come together and mesh perfectly along with the best, most thoughtful lyrics I have ever heard. Poets of the Fall is worth every penny, even though here in the US they still must be imported for mucho dinero. I have been jamming to Signs of Life and their newer album, Carnival of Rust, for many moons now. One thing I would also like to point out is that on the inside of the CD jacket book thing, there are instructions for a "secret" part of the POTF site, with a username and password, which gives you access to, among other things, an INSANE remix of "Lift" by Captain, one of the the band's three members. After hearing the original many times, this tune was just too good to be true. So, in conclusion, buy this album! And Carnival of Rust, too!

I don't know how much times I've finished Max Payne 2 and then completely drowned in the melody from Poets of the Fall.
All the 12 songs from their international debut album are great. Lift, Late goodbye and Sleep are the best.

Fresh Finns! So why can't we get this in the US?.......2006-09-03

A breath of fresh air amongst the flat, uninspiring 'music' that gets heaped atop all of us these days. Poets of the Fall (PotF) serves up an epic mix of anthem ballads and serious

melodies. But it's all good in the the kind of way one can enjoy Money followed by a dose of Comfortably Numb.
I hear influence of Depeche Mode, Collective Soul, REM, James, and Toad the Wet Sprocket, to name a few. One thing that stands out with Poets, are the lyrics. For the most part, they are smart and well thought-out. They also tend to repeat much less than your average So on to the tracks:

1 - Lift - one of the two singles released from 'Signs', this is my less favorite tracks. It's a reasonably good, upbeat, catchy tune, but it just never really peaks. Not bad, just not

great.

2 - Overboard - this is the tune I would have picked over 'Lift' as a single. Similar to 'Lift' in tempo and energy, 'Overboard' has that extra oomf - a catchier chorus, cooler rhythym

guitar, just a better tune. This is a song to turn up, roll the windows down, and sing along with while cruizin on a nice summer day.

3 - Late Goodbye - The other single and my first taste of PotF. An instant, mesmorizing classic, 'Late Goodbye' spurned my search for who this band was. At the time (2 years ago), there

was not much info on Poets and I sort of gave up there. Recently, my interest repeaked, and lo-and-behold, two albums! 'Late Goodbye' starts with an eerie feeling melodic acoustical guitar

and equally mournful voals. It's a dark song which picks up steam on each verse until some epic 80's hair-band crescendos in the bridge. It will make you smile. I know I always do! One of

the best on the album, no doubt.

4 - Don't Mess With Me - Funny, when this song starts, I always have the urge to skip tracks. I'm not a crazy, highspeed metal fan and this song just jumps and goes from the first second.

However, give it about 25 seconds and it turns mellow pretty starkly. That will only last for about the same time and it's back to harsh guitar. And that's the gist of the song: back and

forth, slow, fast, slow fast. All of a sudden you realize that the heavy guitar chorus is really fun and without realizing it, the song's done and you didn't skip the track!

5 - 3AM - Starts with a croon. This is where the album starts to settle in and mellow. It's a song about late night, or rather early morning, and it fits. This tune is one you might

expect to hear yourself at that hour. Mostly acoustical rhythem with a steady dirty electric following along in the back. And the crooning. Solid, if not high energy. Switch gears and

enjoy it.

6 - Stay - The first time I heard 'Stay', I thought it was pretty average. After about 8-10 listens, this track is one of my favorites right along with 'Late Goodbye'. It is not an epic song. It does not build up. It's relaxed and keyed. It just flows, and the vocals really carry this one right along. Fantastic!

7 - Seek You Out - Has a Barenaked Ladies feel, but plays back and forth with an ethereal vibe. One of my less favorites but respectable nonetheless.

8 - Shallow - A steady acoustical rhythem morphs into a steady, floating Edge(U2)-like guitar chorus. A par-for-the album tune.

9 - Everything Fades - A tenative keyboard reverb flips with a powerchord chorus. Throw in some funky bass, and this generally high energy tune keeps up until it's 3 minute fading point. Anothe par tune.

10 - Someone Special - This is the token 'chick' song. I don't mean that in a necessarily bad way. It's got great meody, some nice simple piano, good vocals, and a steady build. It's really just the lyrical choice, the title in the chorus, and some in the bridge that make be just go 'aack'. But then again you can sell it to your girlfriend. Good music, iffy lyrics.

11 - Illusion and Dream - This may be blashpemous, but a portion of this song sounds like a country-pop crossover, and I really, really don't like country-pop crossover. However, the majority of the song does not suffer from this. There's some good power chords, marching drum, quiet reverb, and a song-ending minute-or so fade out of haunting floyd-like guitar (though please don't expect David Gilmour).

12 - Sleep - Light Piano and dreamy, warning vocals. A great, slow album closer which has a steady build up of it's own.

Signs of Life is a fantastic freshman album. It offers proof that there really are good bands out there that waiting to be discovered. It is an absolute sin that this album cannot be purchased here in the states. I do hold hope that in a year or two, Poets of the Fall will make their way across the ocean so us sadly lacking american music fans have something to cheer for.

Poets of the Fall released their second album 'Carnival of Rust' a few months ago. I will try to review that soon since their sophmore effort which is a more finely tuned and polished version of 'Signs' with more potential 'hits'.

A 'MUST HEAR' album.......2006-08-05

After completing max payne 2, i heard a totally immersive song, from where i heard of This band. Trust me, this band is one of the best! Their songs are totally different from the crowd (hey, that's good, is'nt it!) My favourite songs where 'late goodbye' and 'seek you out', though each song is a legend in itself. It's a pity that hardly anyone in this wide world is giving this band the attention they deserve

As many people here, I discovered this band by listening to the ending soundtrack of Max Payne 2 (I never sit through credits) and was just amazed. Had to get the single and now this CD. Absolutely worth it.

FALL 1997 AND SMALLTOWN POETS.......2007-06-04

I remember purchasing this CD not long after it came out. You were able to sit down and listen to a CD set aside for a demo before buying it in Christian book/music stores. I liked what I heard and took a chance on it, needless to say it became one of my favorite Christian CDs. I played this album to death during the fall of 1997 when I was going through some really hard times with my family, it was such a comforting record to listen to. I decided to take a vacation that October up in San Luis Obispo to go visit a high school friend and get away from it all. I took this CD with me and the music blended perfectly with the feel of autumn up in the central coast. It really got me focused on God while I was up there. I can't listen to this CD without remembering how I felt there, the smell of the air, the brown leaves on the trees, the rolling hills. This was beautiful music and it was a beautiful place to be. This CD just may get you through the darkest hours like it did me. Their first and best album. Oh, one more thing, these guys used to be called Villanelle in 1995 and released an album called "Pinwheels and Orangepeels." Great album as well!

Smalltown Poets is one of the most underrated bands in the Christian/Pop Genre. I love their music. This album starts off strong with "Prophet, Priest, and King" and keeps on going from there. There are a couple of filler songs on this album but overall it is great. This cd comes with some great bonus features that you can access by putting it into your computer. If you like this album check out Big Tent Revival's album "Amplifier."

This is how good pop/rock should sound........2000-11-26

Smalltown Poets are a good pop/rock band. This debut CD proves that fact without any doubts. If you like good melodies, energetic instruments, and sing-a-long lyrics, then you will absolutely love this CD.

It is good to encounter yet another band unashamed of their faith in God. They are willing to stand up for their devotion to Jesus in public. The song "Prophet, Priest, and King" is a witty introduction on this CD that helps foster the importance of our relationship with God. The remaining 10 songs carry similar themes that help shape our thoughts and redirect them back to God.

This is also an enhanced CD. There are a couple of videos you can watch on your computer. I was impressed with them too. Much like the band itself, none of the videos are fancy. It is this stripped-down and honest approach that helps set a "we are for real" atmosphere that makes you want to trust these guys. In the videos, it is fun watching the band on stage or behind the scenes as they travel and prepare for concerts.

This is really a fun CD from start to finish. Enjoy!

This album was amazing! It had a whole lot of really great songs!! I love to listen to this CD! It has some of the most inspirational songs out there, with a good beat. It sends out a great message, and has a variety of sounds on it- this is by far one of the best Contemporary Christian Bands out there!

A Few Great Songs on a Good CD.......2000-10-02

This is a great CD to listen to all the way through. The sounds are diverse all the way through. The lyrics deserve 5 stars all the way through. They are full of life experience, and passion. My favorite songs are "Prophet, Priest and King", "If You'll Let Me Love You", and "Trust". Unfortunately my least favorite song "Monkey's Paw" would really make a great poem. The lyrics are great, but I believe the music leaves something to be desired. If you like Jars of Clay, or Jennifer Knapp, you'll probably like these guys. Give them a shot, listen to it all the way through first.

Almost two years ago I saw Peter Mulvey perform at an outdoor music festival and immediately bought this album. Never have I seen a contemporary singer-songwriter whose music was so rich, so full of original ideas and images, so devoid of cliches, and so full of mystery. Even after almost two years of listening, I never get tired of the songs because they still make me think and wonder. "Wings of the Ragman" is my favorite -- a dead man reaching out to implore the living to see what's around them. "Every Word Except Goodbye" is a most unusual will, an accounting of what should be given to whom. I love the lyrics, "Give my arms to your waist," and "Keep for yourself the thought of my favorite sin." Why, oh why is someone this talented -- as songwriter, singer and guitarist -- not more famous? Why are his songs not played on the radio? This is the kind of music I want to hear when I turn on the radio!

Peter Mulvey records only great CDs, and The Trouble with Poets is another winner. It starts with songwriting that is masterful, astonishingly wise and mature for a man just 30 years old, who only recently added musician/producer David "Goody" Goodrich to the songwriting mix. Though Mulvey's writing is often labeled dark, these songs vary in tempo, in instrumentation, and in mood. There is hope here, and compassion, in songs like Tender Blindspot, Wings of the Ragman, and Home. One also finds pain, introspection, paranoia, and flights of fancy (hey hey hey): just another walk in the park of these creative minds. The execution is equally fine. Mulvey's guitar playing is legendary, and Goodrich sprinkles effective instrumentals all over the album -- in addition to producing it with flare and skill. The result is the delicate acoustic Home, the special effects on Bright Idea, the flowing musicality of Ragman, and a delightful mandolin feature on the only cover on the CD, You Meet the Nicest People in Your Dreams. Guest vocalists make valuable contributions as well, but holding it all together is Mulvey's rich, soft, and very expressive voice. This is a hard-working musician with enormous talent. Buy the CD; discover a new obsession.

Peter's latest outing is definitely among my favorites of the recordings he has released to date. "The Trouble With Poets" definitely represents his most mature work so far. His songwriting ability is unparalleled -- with his words, he echoes thoughts and feelings that everyone has but can never give voice to, from the whimsical to the fearful. Listen, and you will find something in his songs that will make you feel like someone understands, no matter what your mood is or where you're coming from. Particularly excellent tracks are "Words To Small To Say," "Tender Blindspot," and, of course, the title track, wherein he gives the poet in all of us pause. You'll never get tired of this one...

Mulvey Minded.......2000-11-16

I have only seen Peter Mulvey in concert twice but it was incredible. He performed many of these songs live and I can only say the energy in the live show was so intense that the album could not reach 5 stars after seeing him really put his heart into it. Of all of Peter Mulvey's albums I would say this one is my second favorite, next to the first one I ever listened to which was Rapture. I do however, recommend that you purchase ALL of his albums because Peter Mulvey is the best.

Peter Mulvey is truly one of the best songwriters out there today. His songs reach a level of musical brilliance that I have not heard since Leo Kottke; aside from musical beauty, he also conveys intelligence, social concern and awareness, personal depth and an uplifting amount of lightheartedness through a combination of poetry and prose.

It has its moments but its no Tone Poems or Tone Poems 3.......2006-06-20

I was enthused about this at the time of release but having owned it since Christmas 2005 I think it suffers from too many cooks in the kitchen. I don't think some of these people should have been on here as "tone poets" to begin with. David Bromberg, I'm looking at you. His duo track is painfully trite. A Grade-A example why fewer people, each playing more tracks, would have been better. John Reischman and Jim Nunally's duo track is beautiful. Gorgeous tone from both of them, and a great little melody. It's a shame they only got the same amount of disc time as Bromberg's wieney-toned exercise in sterile blues cliches.

Having said this, obviously there are some very nice tracks on here. Eva Scow (mandolin) and Carlos Oliviera's (guitar) Brazillian duo track is a highlight. She is an excellent find and I really hope I get to hear alot more of her in the future. I listen to Mike Seeger more often than Jody Stecher but Jody is the star of their 2 duo tracks, both of which I enjoy.

Bob Brozman's track is one of the more interesting tracks here if, like me, you're a big fan of him. It's actually just a so-so track made interesting by the fact that this is the sort of tune he'd play on a National. It really shows just how much smaller the range of this Martin is, as compared to the incredible, dynamic Nationals on which he'd normally play this tune.

Jerry Douglas' plays a beauty of a Down in the Willow Garden. Jim Hurst's solo track is also a real winner. Mike Compton's is nice but ultimately it's just a teaser for the recent Acoustic Disc album you really need, Mike Compton & David Long's Stomp.

I haven't counted the minutes but I feel confident that all the stuff on here I really love could have fit on 1 disc. Still, Carlo Aonzo, Mike Marshall, Mike Compton, Jerry Douglas, Jim Hurst, O'Brien & Sutton, John Reischman & Jim Nunally, Eva Scow & Carlos Oliviera, Chris Thile, Bush & Lawrence... 2 discs full of them could have been fantastic. More Grisman of course also, and Brozman is truly one of the greats but once you know him on Nationals and Bear Creek Weissenborn-types, etc... it's rather anti-climactic hearing him hog-tied by this Martin.

As much as I love the Acoustic Disc label, this set pretty much follows their trend of the past couple years in oftentimes making me continue to wish, hope and pray that their next release will finally be the Carlo Aonzo solo disc and/or the new Andy Statman & Grisman "Songs of Our Fathers, Vol. 2" type of album. Or my long hoped for Tone Poems disc(s) of banjos (Mike Seeger) & mandocellos/mandolas (Grisman).

A great addition to the series.......2005-12-04

I love Tone Poems I, II, and III. Tone Poets is a great
addition to this series of acoustic music. The solos are
lovely, and the duets are truly spectacular. I really love
this kind of music -- timeless songs, unamplified. I can
feel a connection with the musicians as they play.

the Dawg is back on top.......2005-10-25

In previous reviews I was a tad tough on the old Dawg for the Tone Poem projects, especially Tone Poems III, which I still think is a complete bore. (I say that about number 3 even though I love resophonic playing; I even own and regularly play a National mandolin.) I've grown to love Tone Poems I, however, mainly because I discovered the accompanying Mel Bay sheet music and have spent many hours strumming the tunes. (I'm now using Tone Poems III to level the legs of my desk, and I haven't purchased or heard Poems II and so can't comment on it.)

Tone Poets, however, is spot on the money. The tunes are varied and wonderful, and of course the mucisianship is first rate. (I never questioned the talent on the Tone Poem recordings; many of the tunes just put me to sleep, but that's just my taste in music.)

There's no need for lengthy comments on this one. If you love good pickin', buy Tone Poets. You won't go wrong.

Creative artistry at its very best.......2005-10-24

CD1 Solos (57:37), CD2 Duos (57:31) -- Good tone is all about what sounds good to one's ears and when the instrument sounds full with plenty of depth in the notes. They ring out in clarion fashion and sustain. An instrument's player and their technique determine tone, but the instrument must be reasonably well-made also. Hearing good tone is a rather subjective exercise because people hear tone differently. One musician's priorities may be different than another's. Sounding nice should be the main objective and not necessarily playing a lot of notes or technically challenging material. As an experiment to investigate tone, David Grisman assembled a number of gifted musical poets able to express beautiful and lyrical music. What a great idea that both titillates and stimulates our aural sense. The lean arrangements result in splendid clarity on an entire body of music that is both relaxing and ethereal largely because tone is often best captured and demonstrated in slower selections.

The 2-CD set features a stellar cast of mandolinists and guitarists who all performed and recorded over a 4-year period on the same vintage 1922 Gibson "Lloyd Loar" F-5 mandolin and 1933 Martin OM-45 guitar. The mandolin is affectionately nicknamed "Crusher," and the orchestra model guitar was produced for only five years in the 1930s and was chosen for its ringing treble. The same microphones were also used (Neumann KM-84s for the mandolin; Neumann KM-84 and KM-85 for the guitar), and recording was done directly to the same ½" 2-track analog Ampex ATR-100 tape recorder. No equalization was added during recording. Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes both used a metal nut to temporarily convert the OM-45 to a slide guitar. Tone Poets is a continuation of the Acoustic Disc label's successful Tone Poems projects that explored the unique relationship between musician and instrument.

Besides Dawg himself, the contributing tone poets (42 altogether) include David Bromberg, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, John Jorgenson, Mike Marshall, Ronnie & Del McCoury, Tony Rice, Andy Statman, Bryan Sutton, Tim O'Brien, Frank Vignola, Chris Thile, Don Stiernberg and Frank Wakefield. I was a little sad to see only one woman (17-year-old Eva Scow) included, but she wasn't the youngest player invited to participate. That honor goes to 16-year-old mandolin prodigy Jacob Henry Jolliff of Forest Grove, Or.
As Grisman offers in the liner notes of the 28-page well-illustrated CD booklet, "It ain't the car, it's the driver!" Disc one alternates solo mandolin and guitar pieces. What is so exhilarating is that each player's techniques (whether using flatpick, fingerpicks, duo stylings, slides or bare fingers, standard or alternate tunings) are a sheer treat to experience by these masters. Multiple genres of music are also represented in the pieces chosen. There is classical, bluegrass, blues, jazz, gypsy jazz, hymns, traditional folk, Brazilian, and new acoustic. I am reluctant to pick a few favorite selections because every single one demonstrates penetrating virtuosity and innovation. The 15 duos on disc two range from Tim O'Brien and Bryan Sutton playing "You Are My Flower" to David Grisman and Tony Rice closing nearly an hour later with a 7-minute rendition of "Blues for Vassar." Tone Poets is creative artistry at its very best. As with an earlier Tone Poem project, I wonder if a companion book of music and/or tablature for the Tone Poets project would be possible. I'd love to hear another volume in the Tone Poets series, and it could even include one disc of trios and one of quartets. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

The Tone Poem series are among my most played and favorite CD'S. The CD Tone Poets is ans amazing and pleasureable 2 Cd set of many musicians playing 2 vintage instruments, either solo or in duets for mandolin and guitar. You will love it if you are a fan of acoustic string music.
