from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-05-24
"Heartsounds" was David Lanz's first album. It started out as a musical accompaniment for a seminar on human energy that a psychologist-friend of Lanz's was conducting. These energy systems, also known as chakras, come from a Hindu teaching that was dictated 3,000 years ago, and has been proven by modern science. There are seven chakras that control the emotions and other senses of the human body, and David studied the colors and feelings associated with them with his friend. He then wrote seven of the songs on "Heartsounds". They were so popular that he added five more songs, and had his first album. Song titles include "Heartsounds," "Farewell Amparo," "Dream Field," and "Valencia." "Nightfall" was David Lanz's second album. Purely solo piano, this album contains some of Lanz's classics. The album contains six tracks that range from four to ten minutes in length, giving the record a relaxed, leisurely feeling. The pieces include "Leaves on the Seine," "Courage of the Wind," Water From the Moon," and "Faces of the Forest."

Highly Recommended Chamber Music Works by George Tsontakis.......2005-04-25
George Tsontakis is a contemporary composer for whom I have the strongest regard. I have never heard a less than effective work from his pen. His 'Ghost Variations' for solo piano, recorded by Stephen Hough, is a modern masterpiece. His Four Symphonic Quartets, inspired by T.S. Eliot's poems, 'Four Quartets,' are likewise extraordinarily attractive works. I'm also very fond of the Third and Fourth String Quartets recorded by the American String Quartet. All of these are available here at Amazon. On this disc are three chamber works: 'Heartsounds' for violin, viola, cello, doublebass and piano; 'Meditations at Perigee' for piano and clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cellos and doublebass; and, for solo piano, 'Sarabesque.'
In all these works the piano is the first among equals and all of them are played gorgeously by pianist Sarah Rothenberg; indeed, the six-minute 'Sarabesque' was written (and named) for her. 'Meditations' begins with a very long piano introduction before the other instruments chime in. In both the ensemble pieces the writing is characterized by, among other things, pointillistic and polytonal use of the instruments; pulsing that sounds, but really isn't, minimalistic; and elements of birdsong. Also common to all these works are hints of simple chorale, hymn or folk-song tunes, often clothed in a kind of fragile melancholy. There is sometimes a Janacek-like insistent, almost hypnotic repetition of melodic and harmonic cells. Add to that a classical balance and formal organization and you get intensely satisfying, emotionally immediate, and ultimately haunting works. I've been listening to these present pieces for more than a month and have come to absorb and appreciate them more and more. On a couple of occasions snatches of these works have even provided the background music for my nighttime dreaming, a kind of nocturnal Ohrwurm. Rothenberg's compatriots in the ensemble pieces are all highly distinguished instrumentalists, mostly from the New York scene, and they give inspired performances.
Considering that these works were written over a period of thirteen years (Heartsounds, 1990; Meditations, 1997; Sarabesque, 2003) they are nonetheless all of a piece. I've heard enough of Tsontakis's works over the last twenty-five years to recognize his music within a few measures, and I've often thought that all his works taken together make up a kind of meta-work. It is a great honor for him to have won the Grawemeyer* and for him to be getting more and more performances all over the world. He has been laboring in the vineyard these many years and this well-deserved recognition has been late in coming.
Strongest recommendation.
Scott Morrison
[*A small correction to Thomas F. Dillingham's earlier review here. Tsontakis won the extremely prestigious (and remunerative) Grawemeyer Award not for a string quartet but for his Second Violin Concerto, which has not, as far as I know, been recorded yet.]
Should be better known!.......2005-01-24
George Tsontakis won the Gravemeyer Award a few months ago for his Quartet #5, which still has not been recorded; I am eager to hear it. Several other works have been recorded, however, including the wonderful New York Variations and Four Symphonic Quartets. "Heartsounds," however, is easy to recommend as a first encounter. Of the three pieces recorded here, one is a short piano solo piece that is charming enough, but not enough to grab our attention. The two small ensemble pieces, however,
"Meditations at Perigee for Piano and Six Instruments," and the title piece, are both firstrate and would tempt anyone to seek more of Tsontakis's work. "Heartsounds" employs violin, viola, cello, piano, and bass (as the notes remind us, the same instruments Schubert used for the "Trout"), while "Meditations" includes the same instruments, with the addition of a clarinet. Tsontakis makes the most of the possibilities of these combinations, creating fascinating and intricate interweavings of both instrumental sounds and musical styles and types. This is surely one of the most enjoyable recordings of contemporary music I have heard recently.

Lively, sparkly and enchanting.......2006-07-11
Once more David Lanz proves that he is not some lucky person who puts out a cd or two and calls himself famous. He brings and delivers with this long and luscious album as Heartsounds truly sounds like it came form his heart. One can not imagine how much can be done with a massive object such as a piano, from delicate and wispy to hair risingly good it can alter the mood in seconds and every single on these pieces does exactly that.
I must admit that lately this is the only kind of music I like to listen to while reading, I put it on very softly, light some of my favorite candles and feel my stresses melt away. It's even better to crank it up and sit back in your favorite comfy chair, with a cat in my lap and a blanket over. Some pieces such as Valencia are fast and galloping, Embrace is soft and moody, Gideon's Arrival has spunk and hidden depths, and it makes music sound like liquid jewels, Stargazer sounds like a cool desert night, Day Star sounds like morning's first rays as the warm up and opens a field full of sleeping wilted flowers after a cool night. Each song sounds so different and evokes emotions I wouldn't be aware of feeling on my own in a quiet room. Farewell Amparo is melancholy and silky as notes are very tender and lovingly played; Heartsounds is full of hope and brightness with bit of a jazzy feel. Rosario sounds like a live Cezanne landscape captured on a crisp canvas, with lavender and honey colored fields of wheat, I cannot begin to try and describe each one fully as all the pieces are magnificent and on constant rotation in my listening repertoire.
Even my kitties like it, as they prance around to it, it never bothers them like my other music choices.

A Wonderful CD.......2001-12-28
I am also surprised at the harsh reviews of this album. Although, I play Return to the Heart more often, I still listen to Heartsounds a lot and find it very peaceful and relaxing. Recently I discovered John Nilsen who is a great pianist, and if you are shopping around for good piano music, consider checking out Nilsen also.
Strong. Similar to NightFall........2000-05-30
I think the other reviews are too harsh. This is solid new age piano. Sometimes the earliest recordings by artists, are the most inspired and fresh! Similar to "Nightfall", which is my personal favorite.
It's O.K........1999-10-13
This CD is David's first album, so it is worth listening if you want to know how he began his musical career. It is not good and the songs just repeats itself for about 2 or 3 times. When I firt listened to the first song, I thought it was good at the begining but later it gets really boring. I mean really boring. I don't think you will like it.
Very early Lanz........1999-07-23
David Lanz's style had not yet matured when he recorded this. Though some of it reflected the style of his later works (his quiet ones, anyway), a lot of the pieces have a kind of meandering tunelessness to them. Valencia, the first track, is a perfect example: the main theme consists of a major scale going straight down for two octaves. A lot of it is kind of repetitive, too. My favorites are Dream Field and Rosario, which echoes his later work Prelude to the Dance. Heartsounds is also nice, but there's a much better version on Return to the Heart. If you're a Lanz fan, I do recommend this CD just because it's an interesting glimpse into the beginning of his career. Most of it's quiet and mellow, making good background music for relaxing or reading or enjoying the weather. (Unless it's a thunderstorm. Then you want his Skyline Firedance!)
