Though fans shouldn't mistake this various-artists soundtrack for the next Toby Keith album, the music for Keith's star-turn film (also featuring Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds, and Willie Nelson) builds from reflective balladry to unbridled, triumphant rock. It may be hard to separate the thematic sequencing from the movie it accompanies, but the soundtrack itself tells a story. It begins with Keith's melancholy, violin-drenched duet with Lindsey Haun on the title track; progresses through the spiritual uplift of a revival of "Uncloudy Day" that finds Willie Nelson and BeBe Winans joining Keith, as well as Sonya Isaacs's testament to faith on "The Battlefield" (with harmonies by Vince Gill); and culminates in the rambunctious "Big Bull Rider," the bluesy boogie of "Zig Zag Stop," and the full-throttle rock 'n' roll of the closing "Jacky Don Tucker (Play by the Rules, Miss All the Fun)." Matraca Berg, Fred Eaglesmith, and Keith's running buddy Scotty Emerick are among the others contributing tracks. While Keith sings on only 7 of the 13 cuts, there's a unifying vision throughout. --Don McLeese

Broken Bridges soundtrack cd.......2007-07-30
This is a great CD. Sounds great. Makes me feel good when I listen to it. And received the CD in a short time.
Great.......2007-07-26
There is no such thing as a bad Toby Keith DVD, CD movie, performance, etc. He is great!
Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-06-15
Toby Keith hit the jackpot! Not only is the movie one of my favorites, the soundtrack is also a favorite. You will cry a few tears in the movie, and the soundtrack will also produce those tears as you live the story all over again. I highly recommend this one.
Broken Bridges Soundtrack.......2007-05-14
I greatly enjoyed the movie and knew I would enjoy this soundtrack. I think any Toby Keith fan would. The songs are full of country charm. The movie did not get much hype, but I had seen a video clip of one song from the movie and rented it after seeing it on the display rack at Blockbuster. I loaned the movie to a friend, and we both had to go out and buy the soundtrack!
Love this soundtrack.......2007-05-09
Love the music but not really a country music fan. I heard this once and ordered it the same day.

Hartman.......2007-02-28
The real reason to get this cd and the follow up cd is to get the tracks of Johnny Hartman. I've also been trying to find tracks w/ the underrated guitarist Al Gafa; he backs Hartman on some of these tracks -- a real find. Any jazz junkie should attempt to score these two cds.
Johnny Hartman - the gold in the dross.......2007-02-26
The best thing about Clint Eastwood's 1995 tearjerker, "The Bridges of Madison County," is the soundtrack. Although most of the album (other than Eastwood's syrupy "Doe Eyes" which appears twice on the disk) is listenable, it's the recordings of Johnny Hartman that make this disk indispensable. Hartman, who has to be considered on the short list of the greatest male vocalists of all time, recorded the material heard here for the now out-of-print album, "Once in Every Life," on the Bee Hive label in 1980, three years before his untimely death at age 60. The album, a late masterpiece surpassed only by his 1963 collaboration with John Coltrane, has never been released on CD but Eastwood has done us all a huge service by releasing the entire content of the album spread out over two disks (this one and its sequel "Remembering Madison County"). Hartman's voice, a smoky baritone, is perfectly suited to the mature romantic ballads he performs here with a very complementary sextet. Hartman recorded some of the tracks, notably "I See Your Face Before Me," earlier in the mid 50s also. On the soundtrack he sings the song at a slower tempo, shading it with nuances earned over the many years he had lived with the lyrics. His renditions of the aforementioned song, "It Was Almost Like a Song" and "For All We Know" may well be the definitive versions.
This is an essential purchase for anyone who loves male jazz vocals.
Takes you back to a special time and place.......2007-01-10
This CD is filled with many warm memories of a great movie and a great time. There are no weaknesses in this collection of songs;just pure pleasure.
The Bridges of Madison County.......2006-08-24
My husband and I have watched this movie over and over and we have listen to the music driving along and I'll turn to him and say "RRRRObert....you wanna F_ _ _ on the linoleum one more time" We just laugh..If you seen the movie as much as we have you will understand. Great cd. It definatly sets a mood you cannot, nor ,want to escape. Pour a brandy, sit close and the music will do the rest.
all time favourite album - but put it in the vault !.......2006-01-25
I bought this album after seeing the movie( what 10 yrs ago?) We were only 30 at the time and still listening to Inxs and George Michael etc... so had never even heard of Johnny Hartman!!) Well 10 years and 3 kids later we are completely addicted to this album. My husband knows that if this is on when he gets home it will be in a very nice evening indeed.About two years ago we lost this cd - probably on a weekend away - and spent another year trying to replace it. There wasnt a single music store in Australia that had a new or second hand copy in stock. Where did they all go ?? I ended up ordering it from the U.K. - it took 3 months and cost $30 ( approx $50 us). Needless to say we have several copies of it now and continue to play it constantly. We now own various Hartman/Washington albums but the mix on this album ( plus we are big fans of Clint's) just seems to be perfect. Sublime.

The careful burnishing of John Lennon's daunting legend usually obscures one telling fact: the former Beatle endured a long and troubling artistic slump in the mid-'70s. Indeed, his five-year retirement/house-husband phase may have been one of the shrewdest career moves he ever made. Cut in Los Angeles during his prolonged "lost weekend" estrangement from Yoko Ono, Walls and Bridges too often sacrifices the sublime for the ridiculous--that is, when it's not being altogether superfluous. Still, "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," Lennon's boisterous collaboration with Elton John, scored him his first No. 1 record as a solo artist, and compelling tracks like "Steel and Glass," "Going Down on Love," and "#9 Dream" belie the artistic genius Lennon was literally drowning in copious rounds of Brandy Alexanders during the period. --Jerry McCulley

ok but I prefer Macca.......2006-11-03
Some really nice tunes on here. #9 Dream is as good as anything Lennon ever wrote, but there are weak songs on here, namely 'whatever gets you through the night', which to me is a rambling, tuneless dirge and the awful 'ya ya'. Also 'what you got' is abslutely horrible. Still, worthy of a purchase, as there are a lot of melodic songs here, but I think Macca was better, particularly with his strong and more characteristic 'Venus and Mars' out around this time.
Jerry McCulley, the Amazon reviewer here misses the boat completely .......2006-09-04
Jerry McCulley has not listened to this album well... first of all.. this an extremely polished album... this album was not a lull in Lennon's musical career.. it is an exceptional album.. what a terrible misrepresentation of a Lennon masterpiece.. Jerry McCulley ought to be ashamed of himself.
John Comes Full Circle.......2006-07-31
On this outstanding album, John fends for himself, for the first time in his professional life without Yoko AND Paul. It also is one of his few albums that feature no other Beatle. His band is comprised of such "Fifth Beatles" as Klaus Voorman, Jim Keltner, and Nicky Hopkins. It seems he is now totally screamed out, and has had his say about political problems in the world. He has been stiffed by Yoko - and moves on now much more easily than he did, when dealing with the abandonment of his mother and father. He even has a little bit of Julian on the album.
He seems to be comfortable with himself - the music is accessible, with the expected depth. I have always considered it a letter he is writing to Paul, George, Ringo, Yoko, his fans - heck, even Cynthia and Julian.
#9 Dream connects with Beatles material in more ways than its title. It is one of the 10 or so best Beatles solo tracks, in terms of having a "Beatles" sound to it. "Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out", is "Isn't It A Pity" written sideways. He seems to have the same need to write this as George had with his similarly-penned number. It is a continuation of the Beatles story. Songs like this allowed us to get to know the Beatles personally, and to be able to connect their problems in life with our own.
Steel and Glass, of course, is penance for his "Stick it, Paul" rant, "How Do You Sleep?" from Imagine. YaYa is a return to a Hamburg favorite.
In "God" John says "I was the Walrus", and "I don't believe in Beatles." On this entire album, John seems to say, "well, okay - maybe I am kind of a walrus, and well, maybe I do believe in a little bit of Beatles."
John's personal and professional development is shared with the world in his music. Walls and Bridges, like all of his albums, is a critical piece in that development. When listening to his music with that perspecive, I find it much more enjoyable.
I would encourage the two Beatles fans in the world that do not have this album, to go ahead out and purchase it.
His best release........2006-06-15
Forget what the critics say concerning his "lost weekend" period. The songs on this album are among his best written. #9 Dream, Steel and Glass, Bless You, When You're Down are among the best songs on this album. "Whatever Gets You through the Night" was his number 1 song co-written with Elton John, and as much as I like that song, it isn't even close to being the best on the album.
Buy it, you'll like it.
Good album.......2006-05-29
"Steel and Glass" was about Allen Klein who John was suing at the time. He was John's former manager and he lost his mother when he was young (like John) and had a "New York walk and a New York talk." I really liked the song "Whatever gets you through the Night" which John didn't really like too much. This is one of John's better post-Beatle albums. Still, with all the drinking and drugs John took during this period, the album lacks the care and polish of his work with the Beatles.

Could Kenny Rogers be a continuous, viable presence on country radio today? Probably not. In 1999, "Buy Me a Rose" made him the oldest artist to reach #1 in the history of the country charts. And to the contemporary tattoo-and-tank-top record buyers, that rates the Gambler a great-grandfather--hey, maybe as old as Hank Williams, ya think? Nonetheless, Water and Bridges, his first studio effort in three years, is an impressive comeback. Produced by Dann Huff (Faith Hill, Keith Urban), who keeps the backing leaner than you might expect, the album spotlights a mature man looking back and surveying his life with clear-eyed honesty and more than a little regret. What strikes a listener most is both the quality of songs (by such veteran writers as Craig Wiseman, Annie Roboff, and Mike Reid) and how authentic and soulful Rogers seems throughout, particularly in dealing with the recurring theme of loss. Whether contemplating a long-ago abortion, a lifelong rift with a parent, or the tug of home--even when home is no longer there--Rogers always underplays the sentiment, adding weight to his pathos. "The Last 10 Years (Superman)" and "The Petition" seem a little too obvious and maudlin, but Huff and Rogers make up for it with the extraordinary "You'll Know Love," a sophisticated and anguished ballad of nearly paralyzing grief. Call it just one of many surprises on this album of unexpected and serious depth. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
I Can't Unlove This Album.......2007-05-04
My Mum and I love this album! It really is a great piece of work. "My Petition" is one of the stand-out tracks, about a young man who who knocks on Kenny's door and asks him to sign his petition to the president: "Make a law where Daddies don't work late/Keep Uncle Joe and those soldiers safe/Give those kids on TV all they want to eat/Put a stop to bullies on the bus/No crime, no aids, no hate, no drugs/Give a jacket and a job to people on the street".
The title track is really good as well, about an unborn child and how an abortion is all water under a bridge.
Another outstanding track is the hit "I Can't Unlove You": "I can't unthink about you/I can't unfeel your touch/I can't unsay all the words/Undo all the things/That used to mean so much/I wish I could unremember/Everything my hearts been through ... I can't unlove you."
"The Last Ten Years (Superman)" is a great, powerful track about all that's happened in the last ten years and all the people who have died - even Christopher Reeve. "We lost George Harrison, John Paul and June Carter Cash/We even lost Superman".
All in all, a remarkable album with some fine wordsmiths and songwriters. Kenny's vocals are intimate throughout.
Put simply: I can't unlove this album!
Love his music!.......2007-03-18
Kenny is one of the best! Original and nice to listen to and think about...
More of this type and Kenny will be living under bridges.......2007-01-10
Not a very memorable CD at all. Just very average.
Kenny Rogers - Better than ever.......2006-10-08
Awesome ! Especially love the song done as a tribute to "Superman".
I keep coming back to listen to this CD over and over.......2006-08-25
When I saw this CD promoted on CMT I wrote it off as a sad, washed-up former star trying to make a comeback (I was also put off by his apparent plastic surgery - what happened to this poor guy?). I decided to check it out anyway - listening to "I Can't Unlove You". I was immediately hooked. This is a wonderful song and Kenny's voice is simply amazing. A few of the songs are somewhat corny (as others have noted) but I found them to be a nice diversion from the usual Top 40 fare focused on sex, drugs or worse. After buying and listening to the entire CD I was very impressed - there are some great songs here that will stick with you long after you've listened to them. This is a great CD and will probably be sadly overlooked by many people because of the "reasons" I stated above. If you are as skeptical as I was give it a listen anyway - you will be pleasantly surprised.

Album Description
Maria Bamford speaks in many voices. No, She is not an impressionist, unless you count the stellar impression of her mom. Maria feels her high-pitched voice does not command respect, as a result, she has taken on many voices to help her in her wickedly funny jokes. Decidedly off-beat, Maria has a wide-eyed innocence that comes shining through on this, her debut on CD.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious. Finally, a female comedian who is NOT a hack!.......2007-07-31
I host a weekly comedy/novelty radio show, and I've gotten nothing but praise for playing tracks from this CD. It's easily one of the best stand-up CDs I've heard in recent years, male or female. And trust me, I'm picky when it comes to stand-up.
I have very low tolerance for "hack" comedy, and by that I mean the comedy topics that we've all heard a million other comedians do: riding on airplanes, sounds from the McDonald's drive-thru speaker, Clinton/Lewinsky jokes, dogs vs. cats, etc. More specifically, there are the routines that we've heard virtually every stale female stand-up do before: guys-are-dumb, periods-are-funny, male bashing, stupid pet stories, male bashing, and did I mention male bashing? Bamford however steers clear of all that mess.
OK, granted she does have routines like the crazy mother stories and commentary on the dating scene. But even then, she has her own surreal twist to the topics that's truly witty. She's one of the few I know of that never tries to split the audience into men vs. women to get cheap, self-righteous applause. Bamford simply delivers great comedy. And not to sound like a prude, but she doesn't need "dick jokes" (the comedy term for shock/sex jokes) to hold the audience either. And as others have mentioned, she works an incredibly diverse amount of voices into her act, which really push the delivery. The "Christian Teen" voice still cracks me up to no end.
If you're looking for some new comedy that's original and witty, definitely give this one a listen, especially if you like a lot of the other acts on the "Stand-Up! Records" label.
You'll LOVE Maria!!.......2007-05-26
I don't remember how or when I first heard of Maria Bamford, but upon that first listen I was instantly hooked! Hers is one of the few comedy CDs that I will listen to over and over again and still laugh in all the same places.
Her comedy style is an erratic but exhilarating ride through a crazy array of subjects and funny voices --- you'll never guess what she's going to talk about or SOUND like next!
Maria's tales of temp work, beauty pageant contestants (one of my favorite voices), women's magazine advice and outrageous impressions of her dear, sweet mom will have you laughing 'til your guts hurt!
Definately unique and not your average woman comic, I am also amazed that Maria is not yet so well known!
(So buy her CD now, so we can quote her first!)
Best female standup out there..........2006-12-21
This is honestly some the best standup comedy I've ever heard. Maria is unique and quirky in her humor, and this cd really does her justice. I've yet to find one person who hasn't laughed out loud several times during this cd. While her many (very impressive) voices are her main attraction, she doesn't overdo them...she backs everything up with solid comedy that is actually FUNNY. She's also very quotable.
Too many female comediennes now seem like they're just struggling to make it in a man's world, so their routines are usually either too wraunchy, desperate, or man-hating. Not even a hint of that with Maria. She's brilliantly hilarious and her comedy is a brand of its own. An undeniable true talent.
Entertaining, energetic, and witty- you'll become a Maria Bamford fan within 10 minutes of listening to this cd.
Personal favorite tracks: Small Talk, Crazy Cult, Vennette
Very Funny Chick .......2006-03-05
I checked this girl out because I was noticing her on different TV shows and whatnot, and I checked out her CD. It is so incredibly hilarious. Her voices are very funny, and her talk about "sexual harrassment" is funny as well. If you're going to buy the CD, buy it for her explaining what to do with Saddam. Make him a Roller Rink DJ. Funny stuff. I haven't seen her live, as with any comedian, but I'm sure she brings the same things to the table as on this CD.
Very Impressive Debut Album.......2006-02-02
There's a bit of a lack right now of really unique, standout female comics, and I'm keeping a close eye on Bamford. Her act works because she A) is down-to-Earth and sincere, not an invented "character"; and B) her voices take her beyond the formulaic joke-telling practiced by most comics. And an important part of why her voices are so effective is that she never uses them in an announced, "hey guys, I'd like to do some impressions now" kind of way. Her characters come up naturally, and are used to discuss interesting subjects and social points. Characters presented conversationally as a tool for satire is infinitely more interesting than the almost Vaudevillian "Here are my impressions guys" format.
Maria Bamford's work on "Burning Bridges" is diverse in subject matter, yet consistently funny. It's an excellent introduction to Bamford's vulnerable and insightful presence. Along with her partners who tour together as the "Comedians of Comedy", she is underated, inspired, and hopefully a star in the making.

Great CD .......2007-08-04
Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges' voice is like Sam Cook reborn! This is one of my favorite-listen CD!
Judging the music not the recording........2007-06-27
I really liked this album, I am by no means a blues buff but I thought it was great. Hideaway's lyrics and voice are smooth and comforting. A real delight.
a pity about the production.......2007-06-12
Here's a CD that sounded great when I heard snippets on the car radio, and then again when I heard the sound bites here at Amazon. But then, when I got the CD and put it on my high-grade home sound system, I was very dismayed to hear what sounds very much like a PC-based recording, probably a project undertaken with the best intentions, but relying too much on the 'home recording' medium. Bass instruments were obviously plugged straight in to the 'console', as were many of the guitars, resulting in a terribly unnatural and toneless (not to mention patchy) product. Strong bass (too strong, in fact), but totally unnatural, and with none of the tone that is contributed by amps and speaker boxes. Likewise the guitars, which sound suspiciously as though they've been played through 'pods', not real valve amps.
A pity really, as the songs are great and the singing fine. If you don't have a good, revealing sound system, or you don't mind if your recordings don't sound natural, this is a good CD. If, on the other hand, you want to imagine you're listening to the musicians playing live, it's impossible in this case.
This CD, probably more than any other I've ever bought, shows clearly why the emerging viewpoint that PC-based recording software has rendered studios redundant is flawed! I hope for his next CD Eugene goes back to using real amps, in real rooms with real microphones!
Great songs, great musicians, let down by the worst aspect of the digital age.

Hooray for Hollywood.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party at work. It was the perfect accompaniment and mood setter.
It was February and a group of us decorated the lounge with black, gold, and silver tableclothes and balloon bouquets, and scattered around clap boards and faux film strip on the tables, along with movie trivia cards and black and gold wrapped mints. I made a walk-of-fame star for every employee and taped them on the walls around the room. We also laid down a red carpet from the entrance of the room to about the center with the decorated tables flanking both sides. We sat up the snack table with a sign that said, "Studio Commissary" and went with theme snacks like "James Bonbons with Halle Berry sauce," and "The Queen's scones." Each week we took a quarter of the walk-of-fame stars and posted them on the bulletin board for the staff to write peer compliments under. At the end of the week these stars were taken down and the next set of stars was posted.
This CD really set the mood for employees as they entered the lounge for the first time on that first day after it was decorated, and during the party at the end of the month. The month ended with an Academy Award party with an Oscar going to each employee for outstanding effort in whatever category (best dressed, best supporting staff member, most animated story teller, most pleasant entercom voice, most punctual, best sense of humor, most artistic, etc.), and they were given their stars with the peer compliments attached to the back. Everyone commented on how special they felt and how neat the theme was. Good morale booster.
This CD would also be perfect for the ambiance at your own Academy Awards party at home. Print out those ballots, cast your votes, pop some popcorn and pass around the Juji fruits, and let's watch the Oscars!
Kunzel does it yet again!.......2004-11-23
Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops do a great job everytime, and this is no exception. I'm telling you, if you ever thought that purely intrumental/orchestral was unattractive, this will change your mind. Never a disappointment!
Movie Music.......2002-12-12
If you love that music from all those movies you've seen, then this is the CD you want! It is fantastic!! I want more!! I hope Erich Kunzel will come out with some music from older movies and maybe some TV programs. Listening to his music is better than watching the movie.
More than Beautiful!!.......2002-12-11
This is the absolute best CD they ever put together! And that is saying a lot as we are very picky about what music we like. This is the kind of music that makes you 'feel' deeply. It encourages you to dream big and love living! Forget the grooves, drums and bangs and listen to something incredibly beatiful! You won't be sorry for the money invested in this one bit of sanity in such a hectic world.
This is the one you should own.......2002-10-27
If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.

EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11
This is a "semi" career spanning CD (and the only decent one in existence) of the movie themes from some great Eastwood movies. The earlier pieces are from his days in TV and transition to movies. The more mature work with Lennie Niehaus displays Clint's artistry, no not only as an actor, award winning director, but great composer. My only complaint is the disc is missing the off-beat and totally original jazzy "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from THE GAUNTLET.
The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.
The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.
First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.
A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.
Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20
Nearly an hour and 20 minutes of "Music For the Movies of Clint Eastwood". What fan wouldn't be happy with this CD? 23 Tracks, and a great compilation. From the early TV days, the "Theme from Rawhide"(this was about the time I fell in love with Clint, I think I was about 8)performed by Frankie Lane, and Spaghetti Western, the "The, Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"(does anyone REALLY know the words to this one, and does it really matter?)to the romantic Doe Eyes"(the love theme from "Bridges of Madison County", the music will have you reliving the great moments from great films that just say Clint!
The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".
Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally. It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.
The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!
Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.
"Head 'Em Up, Move 'Em On....Keep Them Doggies Rollin...Rawhide!"
Enjoy....Laurie
"Go ahead, make your day!".......2004-06-21
There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.

It's no use comparing Stones albums to Exile on Main St. anymore; the world's greatest rock & roll band clearly substitutes finances for passion these days. But compared to, say, Soul Asylum or the Black Crowes, the band still produces worthwhile records--"Flip the Switch," "Out of Control," and the closing Keith Richards suite all give Bridges the edge over the Stones' spotty previous Voodoo Lounge. Despite dross like the plagiarized hit "Anybody Seen My Baby," and the underutilization of the talented Dust Brothers production team, the Stones don't deserve our indifference just yet. --Steve Knopper

good stones? please.......2006-10-20
I just HAD to wrtie a review of this album if only to counter these crazies who say this album has anything worthy of attention on it. Pretty much everything on this ranges from fairly bad to dismal. And I've got every stones record from '66 forward and am not one of those who feel that their only good music was before '72. I would say their last breathtakingly amazing record was Tattoo You (esp. "side 2"), and even Undercover I would consider a great album. But this is simply boring and dismal. Believe me, you won't listen to it much at all.
Excellent album.......2006-09-23
The Rolling Stones in a way are kind of a victim of their own success. I think it would be fair to say that when you talk about longevity The Stones have few peers in the Rock and Roll world. Just think about how long they have been making albums/cd's (whatever you want to call them).
They have been at it for over 40 years, non stop.I mean think about it these guys have staying power.
All that said everything they do is still compared to their incredible run from the late 60's through the 70's. And everybody expects every album to be another Exile on Main Street.
And because of this, great cd's like Bridges to Babylon do not get the respect they deserve. This is one killer peice of work by the boys, a finely crafted studio album of high quality stuff.
If you do not have this album and like The Stones you are missing out on a gem.
Real Good.......2006-06-29
This is a real good album, characterized by these songs:
"Flip the Switch," "Lowdown," "Already Over Me," "Gunface," "Juiced," "Saint Of Me." If you're familiar with those six, you know what to expect: modern 90's experimentation, solid songwriting and performances, and an advance over their general brand of latter-day blues rock. "Juiced," in particular, is a very strong statement featuring 808 drum loops, distorted vocals, and Mick Jagger's driving harmonica. This is not the first instance of "techno-blues"; Jon Spencer's been doing it for years. However, the fact that the Stones attempted it (and pulled it off) is a feat-especially when it is considered that any blues influence in popular music has been absent since the early 90's.
Regardless of what you think of the single "Anybody Seen My Baby?", "Bridges" is, by far, their best contemporary album.
Yet another "Downside of Stardom" record........2006-06-28
The reviewer who called Mick Jagger a "Cartoonish sex symbol" was right on the money. I agree - the Stones used to be the greatest band around (before I was born, sadly). But now, they're a joke.
When Mick Taylor left, the Boys lost all the credibility they once had and became one big, unfunny joke. This can be blamed almost entirely on Mick Jagger who, like Brian Jones before him, was obsessed with style. Case in point: Some Girls was a decent record, but hurt by the group's attempt to play disco. Emotional Rescue (probably their worst album to date) also saw them taking on the disco and punk trends. And Bridges To Babylon continues this tradition, this time featuring the band trying two popular genres on for size: techno and rap. Yes, that's right: Rolling Stones rap. What happened? They sold out.
Saint of Me, the only song worth hearing, is actually close to good. But the rest (Anybody Seen My Baby, Too Tight, Flip the Switch, Out of Control, Might As Well Get Juiced, etc). is worthless. Check out Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Some Girls, the underrated Voodoo Lounge and A Bigger Bang instead.
One Of The Best Rock'N'Roll Albums Of The 90s.......2006-05-02
"Bridges To Babylon" is a highly under-rated album, as it was probably doomed to be. From at least the late 80s onward, the Rolling Stones have been in a hard position. Anything they do with resemblance to their older albums there's going to be a certain portion of people who say 'aw, they're old dinosaurs, they can't do anything original', while at the same time any deviation from those same earlier releases is going to bring charges that they've either sold out by changing their style or that they've changed their style because they're just not capable of generating classic-style material on the level of the stuff from the 60s and 70s. I don't think either arguement holds any validity.
"Bridges To Babylon" doesn't sound like "Let It Bleed" or "Emotional Rescue", but then I wouldn't it want it to be a copy of either of those albums, any more than I'd want to pick up an earlier album I haven't heard in its entirety and have it sound just like the greats off Bridges or "A Bigger Bang". For a band that's so often been described as just soldiering through the same basic ground again and again, I feel the Stones have actually covered a pretty diverse range over their career, especially when you don't hear just their hit singles but some of their more eclectic songs off albums and B-sides. 'Continental Drift' off "Steel Wheels" is a great example of how far they can go out of their traditional territory and still be great, and that general trend carries on here. At the same time, Bridges, despite all the differences and flourishes, still has that indefinable sound that it doesn't seem like anyone but the Stones can quite capture. So between going traditional or forging new territory, you've really got the best of both worlds here. Album opener 'Flip The Switch' is a first-rate adrenalizer, a top rev up choice for lifting weights or the like. 'Already Over Me' does a smashing job mining that bittersweet melancholy territory the band has previously covered on tracks like 'Angie'. 'Gunface', one of the darkest tracks the Stones have done in decades, flows seamlessly into a song of a diametrically different vibe - the whimsical, horns-driven 'You Don't Have To Mean It', which features one of Keith Richards's greatest vocal performances ever. Every track on here is great; if a 'single' is supposed to be a song good enough to represent the entire album to a wide array of listeners then any of the 13 tracks here could have been a single.
Excellent music that'll still be excellent years after everyone's forgotten all the late-night 'comedians' and their 'over-the-hill rocker' jokes.

The careful burnishing of John Lennon's daunting legend usually obscures one telling fact: the former Beatle endured a long and troubling artistic slump in the mid-'70s. Indeed, his five-year retirement/househusband phase may have been one of the shrewdest career moves he ever made.

The SOUL of John Lennon.......2007-06-20
How one approaches this disc depends on what you think of when you hear the name "John Lennon". If your idea of Lennon is the politically naive, misinformed "pseudo-Messiah" some people try to make him out to be, then listen to MIND GAMES. If your idea of him is the "kitty"-whipped, emaciated shadow who groaned out vapid tunes like "Nobody Told Me" and "Wheels", then you would be happier listening to DOUBLE FANTASY on continuous loop. However, if your idea of John Lennon is that of the former Beatle who got into the music business because he liked the work of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Little Richard, then take a listen: THIS ALBUM KICKS SOME MAJOR BOOTY!
In 1973, Lennon was separated from Yoko Ono and found himself collaborating with music producer, Phil Spector. Spector was famous for his "wall of sound" and he brought to this disc, his trademark brass horns and strings; leaving solidly placed at the foundation, drums that repeatedly asserted themselves to skew the album toward the R+B side of the musical spectrum.Lest you think Spector's wall eclipsed Lennon, it was John's power as a songwriter, and on this occasion, as a VOCALIST that made this album a triumph! On this "rekkid", John Lennon did some of the best singing of his entire career!
Tortured lyrics dominate this album, but instead of lame-o impressions of Bob Dylan, John sang in his own style, the kind to which we have grown accostumed to hearing in some of the best Beatle tunes. John was alienated from his wife, uncomfortable with his celebrity and just plain mad at the world! Still, he never lost his sense of humor and so, grim songs like "Goin' Down on Love" and "Nobody Loves You" are balanced by little ditties such as "Old Dirt Road" and "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", the latter tune was a duet with Elton John that became a #1 hit! The hypnotic "#9 Dream" is here, featuring a cameo by Lennon's girlfriend of the time, May Pang, as well as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, "Bless You".Listen for 10-year old Julian Lennon on "Ya,Ya" and shudder as John seems to predict his own death in the nightmarish, "Scared".
Where does this album stand in the Solo-Lennon canon? As an oddity but a delightful one that anticipates the Punk-Soul sound of groups like Brand Nubian or Girls Versus Boys. Finally, no matter what else one may think about this disc one thing cannot be denied: YOU CAN DANCE TO IT, GOL' DANG, IT! How many other "post-Beatles" Lennon albums can you say that about? Not many.
One of Lennon's best..........2007-05-10
I absolutely love this CD. Not for the sole fact that it is John Lennon's, but for the music itself. This has to be one of my favorite CD's by him. The Song "surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)" is one of the greatest songs on the album. I highly recommend this CD.
This album is John Lennon's Best!.......2006-12-24
I believe Walls and Bridges to be John Lennon's best solo album. With Phil Specter's production help, Lennon's songs come across vibrant and strong. There is not one weak composition on this album. Number 9 Dream, Steal and Glass and Nobody Loves You (When You're Down and Out)are magnificent performances by Lennon and his band. And the orchestral background really adds dynamism to the experience of listening to this masterpiece. Get t his album! You won't regret it.
Lennon's Lost Weekend.......2006-04-14
Walls and Bridges was recorded doing the lost weekend when John exiled himself to California without Yoko Ono in order to see if their love was strong enough. He lived with his assistant turned lover May Pang. Her vocals is also feautured on "#9 Dream". Walls and Bridges is a happy uptempo album for the major part and friends like Elton John, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon and Ringo Starr had all been around him, but was was beneath the surface that you also can hear on the lyrics on some songs is that John is mising Yoko. Althougn the plan after this was retirement, It would be his last album with new material atleast for a while, Rock N Roll that was released 1 years afterwards was a album with only old rock standards and his last ever studio album recorded whila live "Double Fantasy" was recorded with Yoko, but it came as late as in 1980.
"Going Down on Love" is a rocky beatlesque song with nice riffs and chorus, the lyrics are about missing Yoko. "Whatever Get's You Through the Night" was his first and only number #1 hit. This one feautures a young Elton John. Lennon had met him shortly after the Beatles broke up and he called Elton "The First New Thing He Heard since the Beatles". This catchy uptempo feautures horns and it's no wonder it became a massive hit. "Old Dirt Road" was co-written by Harry Nilsson. It's one of the slower songs here. "What You Got" is another catchy Stevie Wonder sounding song, John is almost screaming the lyrics here, the song itself is really soulish. The ballas "Bless You" another song about Yoko. That also was dating someone else during the hiatus. "Scared" also feauture horns but is more blues sounding, a slow moody song with a nice guitar solo.
"#9 Dream" is one of the best songs of thsi album. It's about a dream where John sees 2 diffrent women. May Pang's vocals feautures on this one and the song itself is a hypnotic dreamy passionate love song. ""Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)" is a uptempo with horns that feauture Elton on Piano and Backround vocals, but this one is weaker then their hit. "Steel and Glass" is a slow paced song that also is dreamy. "Beef Jerky" is a instrumental and I could live without it. Self-Pittying "Nobody Loves You (When You're Down and Out)" is another ballad and surprisingly good. Closer "Ya-Ya" is to forget, it's barely 1 minute and his son Julian plays the drums but it's not a good song.
Overall, For the major part a good album that once again shows Lennons most intimate feelings, it feauture some of his best songs such as the Elton John duet "Whatever Get's You Through the Night" and "#9 Dream". It's a little uneven at times and there are songs that are overproduced but in the end it's a plesant album with some high standards songs that defenitely should be purchased if you like John.
...one of [Lennon's] standout contributions to rock history.......2006-03-30
John Lennon topped the US Singles chart for the first time in 1974 with the hit Whatever Gets You Thru The Night, a radio-friendly duet with Elton John.
Following the success of the single came the album Walls And Bridges. Despite mixed reviews, the album contained some of the best songs and music Lennon had written throughout his entire career: the soulful Going Down On Love; the rhythmic What You Got (that sounds a lot like Stevie Wonder's Superstition); the slow and beautiful Old Dirt Road (co-written by Harry Nilsson); the dark rock tune Scared, which follows past songs like Isolation; a subliminal angry message to former agent Allen Klein in Steel In Glass (that uses the same musical pattern of How Do You Sleep); the affectionate ballad #9 Dream, also a song for Yoko; and what could possibly be the highlight on Walls And Bridges, the Dylanesque Nobody Loves You (When You're Down And Out), where Lennon expresses his feelings of depression and loneliness in such an honest way.
Walls And Bridges may not be the best Lennon album, but it is definitely one of his standout contributions to rock history.
