FRIEND OF A FRIEND.......2005-06-01

Like an obscure '60's Mexican lounge album, crossed with '70's style synthesizers, and towered over by a 21st Century mixboard, this dark and easy-going odyssey into the cosmos via an Ennio Morricone good, bad and ugly guitar, invokes a mental state of a south-of-the-border saloon, with a nourishment-giving insect at the bottom of your drinking glass, a bowl of organic fungi on the bar, and maybe a bare red lightbulb casting strange shadows around the room. It is in this bar that you have the most profound thought of your life, like, "I never noticed before that my teeth are upside down." Deeper the music goes into the cosmic jungle, the guitar leading you into a starry lit desert, you're transported away, and what started off in the first few revolutions as a modest, maybe even bland, space-psych instrumental, leisurely passing dull meteors, vacant planets, and the Mexican Clint Eastwood on horseback, becomes in a few more spins around the galaxy, the understanding of the song, and the revelation that the fungi tastes much better soaked in wine. And you are not of this world. And you're on a quest to find the magic sombrero.

A Masterpiece........2001-11-12

A hauntingly beautiful album from a fine instrumental band. Do I dare call it a masterpiece? Yes. The songs capture the feel of twilight with a languid and sometimes vaguely menacing sound. Minimalisitc electronic sounds slither through an opiatic landscape of acoustic guitars, plaintive pedal steel, and gentle, fascinating rhythms. Sometimes you even get a glimpse of teeth. I hold this one in VERY high regard and wish that there was some way for an instrumental band with such high artistic integrity and true vision to be better acknowledged. Grab hold of this hidden gem before it slips into the gloaming forever.

Mountains of Nortena.......2001-07-31

This CD contains some good music. Sometimes it's heavy and sometimes it's trippy. A lot of work went into it, I think. It's not bad and deserves a listen if you like adventurous music.

Musical answer to my prayers.......2000-11-16

What a superb album. Everything is as it should be. Atardecer continually sounds fresh listen after listen. There is no fluff here, and the album is short and sweet...a very cohesive and concise offering. The mood of the album is perhaps summed up best as that of twilight longing. One of the best things is the lack of a singer...the music is gloriously free of any whining or personal introspection...rather it opens itself up to the listener as a personal soundtrack...or soundscape. It's a shame that fine intrumental music does not command the audience that it did in the days of jazz. I especially recommend this to those of you who drive long distances alone in the dark. This music is haunting and gorgeous. Get it!

Tango's for gringos.......2003-04-20

If you like Argentine style tango you won't like this cd, but if you are like me and like tango played romanticly, and with lush stringed arraingements, instead of the harsh icy sound of the argentine way, then you will love this recording, I only wish that the original albums from which this cd was compiled were available in their entirety.

Big disappointment for Tango fans.......2001-04-24

I purchased this CD with great expectations which were completely dashed. I have always wished that Placido Domingo would record a CD of Argentine tango, since he has the voice and sense of drama to do justice to the art of tango. So when I saw this CD, I thought, "Wow!"

However, this CD is a crime commited against tango. The arrangements are not traditional Argentine tango, but the most saccharine gringo tango. I wish that Domingo had recorded with a real tango orchestra like Color Tango or the orchestra from Forever Tango.

Furthermore, this CD recycles music from the soundtrack to the Carlos Saura movie Tango. You might as well get that CD instead of this one for the few tracks worth listening to.

This two-disc set contains all the piano music by the composer of the famous Concierto de Aranjuez. I can't understand why this music isn't better known. For light-hearted, folk-flavored Spanish entertainment music, Rodrigo is right up there with Albeniz and Granados. While you wouldn't want to play through this whole set at once, nearly everything in it (except for a few simple children's pieces) ranks very high on the entertainment scale. The Cuatro Piezas is almost guaranteed to hook you on the set. Rodrigo himself provided an enthusiastic endorsement of these performances, which I gladly second, and the recorded sound is remarkably fine. --Leslie Gerber

Obras para piano de Rodrigo.......2002-10-22

Well played by professor Allen, wonderful music.
I think that this is what is to be expected from
Maestro Rodrigo. First pieces on the first disc
sound sound a bit in the vein of Debussy, this
was so maybe because it was the style of the day,
but it may well also reflect the composer's time
in Paris, where he studied with Paul Dukas, and
was friend with the mexican composer, Manuel Ponce.
All the music in the disc is well played by professor
Allen along with music for piano 4 hands, where professor
Allen is accompanied by Anton Nel. Wonderful recording,
indeed a five stars!!!!!

Disappointing.......2002-03-08

Rodrigo. One things of the lilting, lovely Spanish melodies of Concierto de Aranjuez or Fantasia para un Gentilhombre. Even the lesser symphonic works have such charm, such appeal -- so I thought that this album of solo piano works would be startlingly good, uniquely Rodrigo. I expected light to heavy Spanish influences, fluid phrasing, even the gently dynamic and soaring crescendos. Well, expectations are rarely satisfied. In this case, the pianist plays very well. His touch is gentle, flirting at times, and he shows understanding of Rodrigo's works. But it is the works themselves, all the songs and sonatas, that are a disappointment. They don't sound like Rodrigo but a great deal like Ravel, as if the French composer were standing over Rodrigo as he wrote, correcting with his pen. There are some pretty melodies here, and some are quite relaxing so that your listening time can pass nicely and sweetly. On the other hand, there are also a good many discords that interrupt the flow and prettiness of the music. Yes, these are very much like Ravel and in places, like bad Ravel. I would recommend the pianist since he does a remarkably nice job, but the actual music is just too different from Rodrigo's normal repertoire or from any sense of Spanish culture and music.
