Ladysmith Black Mambazo proved itself pliable enough when the a capella group was heavily featured on Paul Simon's Graceland. Other crossover collaborations have followed, but few work as seamlessly as this collection, which features old LBM songs, Zulu traditionals and European classical material done in collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra. The rich vocal sound literally fuses with the classical musicians in much the same way as a classical choral group does. To its credit, the orchestra (and arranger Isak Roux) loosens up to fit the more oral/aural traditions of the singers--the music is less precise and reliant on virtuosity. The orchestra provides a particularly sympathetic counterpoint on the traditional "Awu Wemadoda" and is downright playful sounding on "Dona Nobis Pacem." Sounding as elegant and reverent, Ladysmith more than meets the orchestra halfway on the famous Bach choral piece "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." Making borders and boundaries irrelevant, this is a work of startling beauty that couldn't be improved upon. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!.......2007-02-12

I have been a fan of Ladysmith for many years and have a few of their albums but this is simply amazing! Music truly has no boundaries and they have used their God given talent to touch the lives of many people. It doesn't sound like it's possible, but they have really crossed many boundaries and this album is just another example of how far one can go if only they believe!

5 out of 5 stars One world.......2007-01-12

This CD has multipal messages, but the one that strikes me most is the juxtaposition of European "classical" and African "classical". The human soul is one and at the same time unique. That message comes through clearly, and as a bonus, the powerful messages that each track provides in both content and style must not be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-04-26

I had never heard of this group before and since I like to investigate different types of music, I decided to give it a try. I have truly enjoyed this CD. The more I listen, the more I like. I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking! .......2005-02-11

When I first saw the album, I thought---what???? Traditionally, Ladysmith Black Mambazo sings acapella with the notable exceptions of the times they accompany Paul Simon. The group sings a beautiful, close harmony and uses vocalese techniques to provide the occasional percussive click or ululation. Still, the lineup was hard to resist.

"No Boundaries" is pretty amazing stuff, let me tell you. With the help of the English Chamber Orchestra directed by Ralph Gothoni, the two groups meet together on each other's common ground. Ladysmith sings traditional "Amazing Grace", Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" Schubert's "Sanctus." Then the orchestra gets into the African groove for music from South Africa.

Altogether a beautifully arranged, sung, and orchestrated work. If you are new to Ladysmith, this is a good CD to start. If you're an old fan, you'll definitely want "No Boundaries" to complete your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Simply beautiful........2005-02-05

The collaboration between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the English Chamber Orchestra cannot be improved. The sound that both ensembles make together truly is beautiful indeed, as the original Mambazo songs (of which includes "Jabulani (Rejoice)", "Lifikile Ivangeli (The Gospel Arrives)"), the Zulu traditional selections ("Awu Wemadoda (Hey, Man)", "Walil'Umntwana (The Child is Crying)") to the classicals "Dona Nobis Pacem", a joyous song in its own right, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Ave Verum Corpus". This album definately and distinctly proves that music has no boundaries. Mambazo founder and lead singer Joseph Shabalala and Orchestra conductor Ralf Gothoni (along with arranger Isak Roux) have brought to their many fans a selection of compelling and captivating tunes.

2 out of 5 stars Look around for the good one........2005-08-07

This is but a pale shadow of the great Missa Luba by Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin. Unfortunately, that version is only available on vinyl. Look for it on eBay. It is not Westernized or a symbol of our imperialism. It is pure joy from the heart!!! And, once you've heard it, you will not settle for this. However, I give it two stars for effort.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Lively.......2004-02-02

David Fanshawe is wonderful! Most of the songs are a wonderful blend of western and african culture. The Our Father is beautiful, the boys choir that sings it is amazing. This work is even better live.

5 out of 5 stars Why you should buy this CD!.......2002-08-19

Fanshawe did a good job at blending the cultures and native African recordings with his compositions. The whole concept of his journey is wonderful, and the CD cover does a great job of describing his intentions and activities and also contains a comprehensive overview of each movement. Basically, Fanshawe has taken the traditional movements of the ordinary mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei) and added movements, changed the order, and added all the African sounds that he recorded on his ethnomusical journey. I will admit that there are a couple of moments that I don't particularly adore, but they are few and far between. Just the Credo and Sanctus movements alone make this CD worth buying, and the rest of the movements are a bonus as far as I'm concerned! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Blending Cultures...Blending Music?.......2002-05-20

I heard Fanshawe speak when he visited my college a few years past. I had to pick up this CD after, and it has been a staple of my musical diet ever since. It is a stunning musical blend of a traditional Sanctus and African tribal music (forgive me if my terminology is wrong, I'm an English major, not a music major). Without wanting to get pithy and/or didactic about harmony and diversity, it truly shows how lives and faiths blend through this incredible music.

For example, check out the "Kyrie: Call to Prayer." This is a juxtaposition and combination of the Muslim and Christian faiths, as it combines the traditional Christian kyrie liturgy with the recital of the Azan, Call to Prayer, which Fanshawe received special permission to record in the Muhammad Ali Mosque in Cairo.

It's amazing. If you can't take my word for it, check it out yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful........2001-06-13

This piece of music is absolutely stunning. The "Et in Spiritum Sanctum" actually almost makes me cry every time I hear it. It's just so... Pure. You can feel the humanity and deep spirituality of this piece. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

The Breathtakingly Beautiful Centerpiece of Fanshawe's Repetoire Has Gained Favour with Listeners in the Years Since It's Introduction in 1973. The Fusing of a Catholic Mass with Native African and Rock is Certainly a Leftfield Concept, Especially for the Time in which it was Conceived. As Musical Tastes have Evolved, So Has the Perception of this Groundbreaking Recording.

I bought the record in 1980 and have been missing it since it was lost in a move in 1984. This is possibly the best music, outside of the frankly classical, I have ever heard. David Fanshawe is a true gift to the world.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Backup needed for African Sanctus.......2005-09-02

I sent for this CD because I thought it WAS African Sanctus. But of course it is the collection of taped songs and sounds which were used as the "ethnic" parts of the composition. I think they are even more beautiful listened to as pieces standing on their own merit. In the final form of the Christian Mass, these pieces are made to play different parts than they would on their own, and it is a "freeing" experience to hear them this way. The collection is lovely, exciting, and moving; I live in Cairo, Egypt most of the time, and yet it is difficult to find Egyptian music as varied as this on the local radio.

4 out of 5 stars Subtitle: "Field Recordings By David Fanshawe".......2003-05-14

Decidedly noncommercial, richly authentic tribal and traditional music gathered from along the length of the Nile River, in countries as diverse as Egypt, Uganda, Kenya and the Sudan. Islamic prayers, cattle herding songs, children's tunes and various ritual chants intermingle on this multi-textured, fascinating collection. Not the glossy, pop-tinged world music we've come to know and love, but certainly a fascinating glimpse into several other, very different cultures. If you like stuff that sounds different and unusual, this CD is very nice.

David Fanshawe is truly a musical genius, obvious thorugh his beautiful use of syncretism. An extremely atypical look at the tradtional Catholic mass, this CD is a must-listen for anyone intrested in traditional African music and rythems.
