5 out of 5 stars "Grammy" nominated gospel album........2004-03-13

If you like gospel done by a master in his own heartfelt,
southern style, then this gem by Charlie Rich will not
disappoint. Charlie has said he and producer Billy Sherrill
let their "hair down" on this album. Charlie plays all the
piano and does beautiful versions of "Just A Closer Walk with Thee" and "Were You There?" among others and a soaring version of "The Milky White Way" that's incredible. There's a reason why it was a Grammy Nominee - GRAB this CD while it is still in print. Note: Correct title is: "Silver Linings" - with an "s" on second word. Also on cd itself, the correct title of Track #-2 should be "Down By the Riverside."

2 out of 5 stars Not what it seems.......2000-01-25

I'm sorry to strike a discordant note here, but I was disappointed with this album. True, Sylvia McNair sings beautifully as always, but the New Age backing by Daniel Kobialka is not to my taste. And there is far more Kobialka than McNair! On several tracks she contributes only a touch of vocalise to the synthetic 'orchestral' texture, and on one track she is absent altogether. Kobialka's music is repetitive, and one track sounds very much like another. Music to make love by, perhaps - I have been unable so far to test its effectiveness for this purpose - but not music to listen to. Lovers of Sylvia McNair's wonderful albums with Andre Previn should make sure that they like this sort of thing before buying.

5 out of 5 stars Get this ready for Valentine's day!.......1999-01-13

This is the most romance inducing music I have heard in years. Listen to it with your loved one and you will be drawn to your most romantic times together. Experience that feeling come alive again, I guarantee that. Get it ready for Valentine's day.

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal rendering of both classical and pop works.......1998-09-28

Sylvia has a majestic voice that provides a most enchanting quality to the variety of works performed on this CD. I've listened to the CD so much it has begun to skip, so I'm ordering another. The music has a moving, ethereal romanticism to it-- a must have for any serious audiophile's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sylvia McNair's voice is heavenly. A must have CD!.......1998-08-24

I bought this CD after I heard "Somewhere" on the radio. This song alone is worth the price of the CD but all the tracks are heavenly. McNair has the most angelic voice and she carresses each song with such finesse and ease. I have heard other sopranos crossover to more popular music with disastrous results. But McNair just hits everything right. This is a must buy CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great Taste.......2003-01-21

I bought this CD because of the intelligent eclecticism in the choice of tunes and a fatal addiction to the format of the pianoless quartet. At the time, Allan Chase was foriegn to me. Numerous listenings only made my love for this group grow. The knowing quality of the musicianship never dilutes the vitality of the improvising. Something old, something new. A great addition to the genre. I do hope this quartet records again.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing stuff.......2002-10-18

This album was a pleasant discovery. The leader on alto/soprano saxophone and Ron Horton on trumpet/flugelhorn comes up with refershing ideas in their solos. Absence of a chordal instrument adds to the clarity of the group's sound. Some familiar tunes (like Hoarce Silver's "Yeah", Gershwin's "Of thee I sing", "East of the Sun")and also two rarely heard songs by Bud Powell are featured here. The harmonically complex title track is composed by Sun Ra. The nod to Ornette Coleman quartet is apparent but this quartet is by no means a poor clone of the original. This also reminded me of Enrico Rava quartet(with a trombone instead of the reeds)in the early eighties. A must buy for all progressive jazz lovers.

5 out of 5 stars I love it. A new take on the piano-less quartet........1999-01-03

In addition to the piano-less quartets Chase mentions, it reminds me, on some occassions, like a curious blend of the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the quartet Chuck Mangione led in the early 1970s before he had his pop success, in terms of the sense of adventurousness and freedom combined with melodicism (and, of course, similar instrumentation). The arrangements are intriguing, the song choices are excellent. The drummer, Matt Wilson, comes up with some fascinating sounds and an interesting approach to soloing, utilizing lots of space. Mr. Chase contributes some fine, harmonically and melodically complex solos on alto. Some good, lyrical flugelhorn soloing as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Kern collection so far.......1999-11-17

This album brings you as close to Kern's intentions as you will probably ever get. A rival set on EMI with Kiri Te Kanawa uses full orchestra and her delivery of the nearly operatic numbers do indeed rival Morris's. On the other hand, Morris's mezzo, I believe, does fuller justice to the all of the songs; and as for the use of piano vs. full orchestra, well less is more in this case.

More to the point, Morris sings (as she always does) as if she means every single word. So Kiri's rendition (say) of "Look for the silver lining" is perhaps better sung but that of Morris is more believable. Frankly I would recommend both albums, but this would be the one of choice.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional gospel done in the soulful Charlie Rich style........2002-01-26

This is a "Grammy" nominated album done in an upbeat, soulful manner by Charlie. He stated that he and Billy Sherrill let their hair down on this album and the result was excellent. Charlie's voice soars on "The Milky White Way" and he does great renditions of "Down By the Riverside" and "Just A Closer Walk with Thee" to name only a couple. Charlie plays piano on this album to great effect and his feeling for Southern music is very evident. Charlie Rich was one of America's great but under appreciated singers, songwriters and pianists and this album is a fine showcase.

3 out of 5 stars Silver Linings = Different Stylings.......2001-08-14

I purchased this album anticipating that it would contain such church classics as "Amazing Grace" and "Were You There?" as interpreted by Charlie Rich in the "Behind Closed Doors" fashion (i.e., soft, ballad-like, lush arrangements, etc.)However, this album is a little more raucous than one would imagine. Don't get me wrong: it's not a bad album; it's just not what I'd anticipated.
