This is a potpourri of Mr. Rutter's compositions, sung by the peerless Cambridge Singers. Buy it only if you want outstanding music that cures the senses.

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23

This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

Product Description

Co-produced with Bob Harris, Joyful Sign features the bands folk/pop/bluegrass sound but with a sense of confidence, energy and spirit that the trio has become known for live. The album is a showcase for memorable, well-crafted songs, graced by the groups signature three-part harmonies. And after six years of living, playing and touring together, the chemistry between Doris, Ty, and Nate has never been more evident. The members of Girlyman, all classically trained, trade off songwriting duties and a slew of instruments including acoustic guitar, banjo, baritone guitar, djembe and mandolin. Were also big harmony geeks, adds Greenstein. Our arrangements definitely reflect that. 1 Hold it all at Bay 2 Sunday Morning Bird 3 Good Enough 4 Through to Sunrise 5 Invite Me In 6 St. Peter's Bones 7 Joyful Sign 8 Carols at Christmas 9 Easy Pearls 10 Reva Thereafter 11 You Were the Lie 12 Ashen Shade 13 Serve It Up 14 Right Here Beautiful music. The third album from guitar phenom Derek Trucks resounds with joyful noise indeed, and amazingly, it seems as though Trucks and his band run through (at least) 10 distinct genres across these 10 songs. Trucks may venture all over the musical map--blues, soul, jazz, Eastern music, to name a few stops--but he does so with a confidence and assertiveness usually found in much older musicians. Then again, he is the nephew of Butch Trucks (a fellow member of the Allman Brothers Band, Trucks's moonlighting gig) and is married to fellow guitar wiz Susan Tedeschi (who guests on this album), so it's not surprising that he seems experienced beyond his years. Joyful Noise features a host of guest artists--including Qawwali singer Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and soul legend Solomon Burke--but despite the considerable variety here, the album maintains a unified, if high-flying and eclectic, vision. Even at such a young age, Trucks already plays with skill, invention, and heart. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Better than Soul Serenade.......2006-12-29

I really liked the feel of this whole effort, much better than Trucks latest release, Soul Serenade. Rather than being built around the lead singer, the darker, more mysterious, jazzy instrumental musical exploration on this cd (especially tracks 9 and 10) comes closer to capturing all the subtle nuiance of the live Derek Trucks Band sound at its improvisatonial best.

5 out of 5 stars The best of what a great band can do.......2006-09-21

If you've heard some of the Derek Trucks Band's music, perhaps you know what to expect. That is you don't know what to expect! DTB plays rock, blues, jazz, and world music, sometimes at the same time. This album has a lot less blues than some of their others, but lots of mind-expanding jazz-rock, some world, some great R&B with Mrs. Trucks (Susan Tedeschi) and with soul legend Solomon Burke... What more could one want? There are no bad DTB albums, but this one is probably the best.

5 out of 5 stars inventive, invigorating.......2006-02-13

Very rarely do I get "the feeling". You know the one I'm talking about. Something comes on the radio and the chill runs up your spine. You either pull the car over because you've got to hear it, or it's so exciting you speed up. Look down and you're going 85 in a 55 mile zone. I used to get that feeling often. Aretha, early ABB, the first time I heard the harmonies on Suite:Judy Blue Eyes. Lately I've been more likely to get it from songwriters like Guy Clark or Rodney Crowell where the lyrical images are so strong and the storytelling so good, I shiver.

I have been a Derek fan for several years, but have become a bit over the top since he joined the Allman Brothers Band. Derek is ofen compared to Brother Duane for good reason-he's an astounding slide player. But a more apt reason for this comparison is that he shares Brother Duane's insatiable musical curiosity. Any music Derek Trucks hears and likes will find its way into his musical palatte. Where on previous records, it seems the listener can identify that Derek is in his blues phase or Coltrane phase, here all the pieces come together.

Joyful Noise jumps off the speakers. Dancable, funky, with a gospel feel. So Close So Far Away is a lovely instrumental and the two Solomon Burke vocals are astounding. Susan Tedeschi-Trucks visits on Baby You're Right, a blues romp that is too much fun. Maki Madni and Kam-ma-lay take us on a fun world tour. While the guest vocal appearances have their roots in Javier Colon's leaving the band during recording (has anyone heard from him since) it works out well and perhaps frees the band to follow Derek's wandering muse

Definately one for the desert island

5 out of 5 stars Judge Not But Listen.......2005-06-05

Joy....all you need to do is read the liner excerpt from the great writer and philosopher Krishnamurti on the cd and know where their head is at.. freedom from the known is still freedom within limits..the many styles displayed here are the past with music that has freshness and tightness that pays homage to the roots of it all...some Jazz Fusion,Funk,Latino,Blues and Soul...even shades of China Cat Sunflower for your Dead Heads..with some twists on the sounds of the east..people have a need to classify...don't..you have a right to because it is your money but if you spend it on jam bands and desire a smart band that sounds old and new at once these guys are it. I have noticed that their other cd's are all different in style...they are like leaves blowing in the wind...let the wind take them where they go..

3 out of 5 stars `Joyful Noise' pushes beyond the restrictive boundaries of t.......2004-12-24

September 25, 2002
Artist: Derek Trucks
Title: Joyful Noise

On his sophomoric release, Derek Trucks (nephew of Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks)has released an artistic mosaic that defies categorization and is certain to confound listeners. In the richest Fillmore-esque tradition, Trucks and band have amalgamated a fine tuned cornucopia of rootsy sounds into a sonic masterpiece. "Oh sure, but what's that mean?" Today's market practically requires artists to dumb down their sound into a well defined niche so that any dope with fifteen bucks can figure it out. In the short term this means quick sales but tends to cost the artist long term career development. Not so with `Joyful Noise.' Trucks and band lay out an album consisting of instrumentals, an Indian raga, a couple of soul ballads, a "Jazz" track, and a powerful blues song featuring Susan Tedeschi. The result is an eclectic, wonderful, challenging collection of songs that defy `niche' but nonetheless fit together.

Relying on guest vocalists, Joyful Noise employs some of the day's most underappreciated singers including; Solomon Burke, Ruben Blades, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Mrs. Trucks othewise known as Susan Tedeschi. And just to put a point on it, Tedeschi's track, `Baby, You're Right' may be her finest recorded vocal delivery yet. Guitarist Trucks steals from the best including; Carlos Santana,Duane Allman, and John McLaughlin. Guitarists tend to be classified on a spectrum ranging from emotive (Mato Naiji) on one end to technical (Robert Fripp) on the other end. When a player is both expressive and technically adept, well, you have something special (Adrian Belew). Seeped in the `60's tradition of art before economics, Trucks' newest is a excellent example of a special player, who clearly understands the legacy of what that is "good music." `Joyful Noise' pushes beyond the restrictive boundaries of today's music industry and somehow produces art in the art-starved genre that is rock music. `Joyful Noise' is a rare gem that will over-time unfold to listeners and hold up to repeated listenings over the years to come. Psst - next time draft Chris Robinson or that kid from the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies for some vocal tracks)

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.

The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.

These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.

Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.

The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:

1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.

2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.

3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.

Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

5 out of 5 stars Early Childhood Classics - Old Favorites With A New Twist.......2007-05-26

We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24

My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Kid Tunes.......2006-02-18

I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28

If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19

I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

Hip-hop continues to grow up, expanding beyond the 'hood and outside of its American birthplace. Like France's IAM or Britain's Dizzee Rascal, this Canadian rapper puts a unique internationalist spin on contemporary rap. K-os is a skilled rhyme-slinger who openly loathes "bling rap" ("Emcee Murdah") and who harks back to rap's golden era on cuts like "B-Boy Stance," a James Brown breakbeat-fuelled number. However, like Andre 3000 and his "Hey Ya" pop affectations, K-os's strongest material might be the tunes that are the least hip-hop-inspired. Between the foot-tappin', finger-snappin' "Crabbuckit" (with a rhythmic backdrop that mimics Ray Charles's "Hit the Road Jack"), the reggae-pop mix of "Crucial," and the wily Michael Jackson impersonation of "Man I Used to Be," the wide array of musical reference points show rap's sonic possibilities. The ultramodern blend of frenzied turntable scratches and classical strings on "The Love Song" is reason enough to cop this. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars America . . . we have a problem........2007-05-02

Just north of the U.S. border is a little piece of magic called Canada. It's a place many of us here in the States never bother to think about. That must be why we are missing out on so much that Canada has to offer. The best thing Canada has to offer (besides Mellyssa Ford, Deborah Cox and Tamia) is the music of k-os.

He is, hands down, one of the most talented artists making music today. His second album, "Joyful Rebellion", should be looked at as "Exhibit B", with his first, "Exit", being "Exhibit A". From front to back, "Joyful Rebellion" is an overall enjoyable listen. k-os' musical style ranges from rock to rap, to soul and back. The best part about it is that he's actually very good! You need this in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Lightning strikes twice.......2007-03-30

With Joyful Rebellion, K-Os has unleashed another near flawless album. The production on Joyful Rebellion is a slight improvement over K-Os's previous album, Exit, without sounding overproduced. My favorite tracks are Emcee Murdah, Crabbuckit, The Love Song, and Dirty Water. Do yourself a favor and pick up this album as soon as possible. But be forewarned: You won't look at rap music the same anymore!

4 out of 5 stars talented hip hop artist for once.......2006-08-05

k-os was always keeping it real. And when I first heard man I used to be I also thought of michael jackson(and marvin gaye) and thought I was the only one but I guess I wasn't after all. It's an awesome song and whenever it's on the radio we turn it up real loud. Keep doing your thing k-os Canada loves you!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!! 4 and half stars.......2006-05-30

When I heard Man I Used To Be and Crabbuckit on the radio I liked them a lot so I figured I would buy the album and find out just how good K-OS was. When I first listened to the album I was disappointed because it was not what I expected, but I figured I would give it a chance and play it through a couple times. Three or four reruns later I couldn't play it enough. And from then on my addiction to the K-OS and his Joyful Rebellion just kept on growing.

K-OS is a breath of fresh air from the more 'popular' hip-hop artists. Distancing himself from the obscene lyrics and the 'gangsta' rapper image K-OS shows what being emcee is all about. Its not about having fancy cars, beautiful girls and dying in a blazing gunfight, its about making good music. And thats exactly what K-OS does without any of the ego stroking or negative stereotypes.

There are some songs which are little weak such as One Blood and Hallelujah but otherwise K-OS's lineup in Joyful Rebellion is air tight. Dirty Water, the product of his colusion with Sam Roberts (another great Canadian artist) is excellent. Other tracks that are exceptional are B-Boy Stance, Neutroniks, Emcee Murdah and Crucial.

4 out of 5 stars close, but...........2006-04-28

K-Os is unbelievably talented. There is no single bad song in Joyful rebellion. There are straight up hip hop songs and soulful ballads like "superstar". This album is lyrically and musically perfect but the problem is that it has no real depth. I feel like all the songs could be about anything. He lyrically and musically surpasses Mos Def but his words are pop song words and don't have the depth of true hip hop liek Mos Def has. Still, overall, I think this is an album you have to have. I also think we can expect better from K-Os in the future. Oh, and by the way, for all the reviewers comparing K-Os to Wyclef: K-Os makes Wyclef look like a nursery school rapper.

5 out of 5 stars A Listening Treat .......2007-03-08

What a delight to listen to this collection of pure Rutter ! The melodic sounds of the Cambridge Singers bring me such pleasure The sheer joyfulness of this music is to me a religious experience of such depth It is superb and will lift ones spirits instantly. highly recommended to all lovers of the English contemporary choral sound and scene,____ not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19

My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07

I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.

5 out of 5 stars A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19

Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22

I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.

This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.

Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.

While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.

The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.

If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-07-26

I first heard the song 'down on my knees' on mtv then i heard it on radio for the first time here in South Africa. They played one of her most heartfelt songs, 'these days' and that really resonated with me. i went and got it a few days later and i must say it's a brilliant album. it's so easy to listen to - it's beautifully different, her voice is like thawing ice chips (in a wonderful way)and within a day i already had favourites. i think the whole album is brilliant. music like this has never been popular and it's so wonderful to find that people want to experience new ways of listening. i definitely recommend it if you're looking for something that speaks of love, life, sadness, wholeness, pain, and happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2007-07-14

I purchased this CD after playing a few sample tracks. I can honestly say that I really like the music. Ayo would probably not be considered a tremendously gifted vocalist, but she has her own unique, sexy style. The lyrics are outstanding and the music is great. Most of the songs have a laid back reggae groove to it, but the songs do not sound the same.

I only have a handful of CDs where I can listen to every song on the CD. Ayo's joyful is one of them. That's why I'm giving it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-02-15

Love this album. Heard of it in France where she has a huge success right now. Fresh voice and smooth soul/jazzy/afro melodies change from the commercial music we are surrounded with. "Down on my knees" and "Life is real" are the one I prefer but everything is great.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay!.......2006-12-15

I was little disappointed with some of the songs, haven't listened to it very much, but her music is unique.

5 out of 5 stars Honey moon song :-).......2006-08-07

This is my first review on Amazon.com :-) I have heard song "Down on my knees" on my honey moon in France and it just won't get out of my head. When we got home, I got on Internet and started to search wondering who is this artist... After few mouse clicks, I discovered "Ayo - Joyful"! Great music, great rhythm, great voice! And just few minutes ago, I got her whole album and am still repeating this song, although I liked the others too (after one listening). This will be in my player for days, I'm sure :-)

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

    Amazon.com

Few collections are so aptly titled as The Golden Harvest, a rich survey of Shaker songs, chants, and spirituals dating from the mid-19th century. The music often recalls the shapes and cadences of English folksong, while its unaccompanied, unison performance tradition connects with medieval chant. Thirty-eight selections are partitioned into groups according to subject: there are songs about birds, heavenly spirits, and the all-important harvest. Joel Cohen, who transcribed much of this music from old manuscripts, mixes and matches performers drawn from the Boston Camerata in solo and group settings to ensure maximum timbral and expressive variety. Hear, for example, how the call-and-response patterns in "Pretty Home" build to a joyful climax. By contrast, some of the introspective, a cappella hymns quietly resonate with poignant simplicity. A bonus track features the six Shaker family members of Sabbathday Lake, Maine, in conversation with Joel Cohen. In sum, this disc is a beautifully assembled, excellently annotated follow-up to Cohen's 1994 Shaker anthology, Simple Gifts. Should you feel inclined to sing along, full texts are included. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Shaker Music at its best.......2002-03-18

For authenticity and variety, this is one of the best albums available. It includes both well-known and new songs done in proper Shaker tempo using voices alone to convey the feelings reflected in the songs. The comments by the Shakers regarding their thoughts about their music gives a special touch to the album. This album, along with the earlier one titled "Simple Gifts", is a worthwhile addition to any collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful.......2000-12-02

The Boston Camerata is characteristically superb in interpreting this new collection of 19th century Shaker spirituals. Like their previous recording of Shaker songs, "Simple Gifts," the Camerata captures the hope and humility of Shaker belief, performing with bouyant movement and emotional clarity. By dividing the songs into thematic sections however, this CD is untimately stronger and more consistent than the latter. The Native American songs are particulary unique and the addition of a youth choir and the Shakers brothers and sisters add a freshness and reality to the smooth as silk voices of the ever professional Camerata. The tunes sound like a combination of folk and traditional protestant church music, but the lyrics reveal many elements of Shaker theology, some quaint, some still as revolutionary as they must have seemed in 1830. This CD offers an inspirational experience no matter what your religious background, the perfomances transcend definition.
