Not your usual Eurotrash thrash!.......2007-04-02
I first heared this album in the late 70's at a issue wrap party for an
artist magazine, PlainSpeak, being played through one of those immense,
powerful, ostentatious 1970's stereo's, gosh I loved those days, the
street poets were sitting on the floor in the dining room in a little
circle passing around chocolate liquor, and the Ginzburg had just
arrived, things were "right" in that Denver home, at that time. I was
enchanted by this album, and the S&M cover is just too cool for school,
I had always really been bored to tears by bands such as King Crimson,
Rick Wakefield & ELP, GG and any number of other bands that played with
mind numbing sameness. The Esperanto Rock Orchestra was an antidote to
this little malady. My copy has been from album to tape to CD, and its
about time I bought the "Danse Macabre" on CD. If you like music that
lulls you in to mental shutdown, this is not the CD for you, but if you
like music that stimulates the mind and the brain stem then I suggest
you give this CD a listen, if not purchase it. This CD, "Danse Macabre"
is one of the gold nuggets of the 70's nixon era effort to put the
restless masses to in the audience to sleep, and calm down the more
overactive among us, and you know who you are my darlings, and since we
were a little overachiever-ish, we got bored and went back to something
a little more physically uplifting.
Alan Parsons Project forerunner?.......2007-03-14
This CD is, by now, very rare. The Japanese pressing is extinct, and there's only a South Korean edition available, which also contains three or four re-works of tracks from the album.
It's fascinating to hear it again, after an interval of perhaps 30 years. I can see why it's not much in demand -- it's very much of the rock-classical fusion era. Side One (of the LP) is very much an orchestral ELP, with a touch of orchestral Caravan thrown in for the few vocal tracks.
Side Two, in retrospect, is much more interesting, because it contains many of the elements that the Alan Parsons Project would use a year later in their debut album, TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION: highly visual orchestrations, rhythmic bass-lines, John Miles-like vocal. I'm not aware that they have credited the influence of Esperanto, but it's hard to believe that Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson had not heard DANSE MACABRE before composing their first album.
So why did Alan Parsons Project make it big, but Esperanto got virtually nowhere? Esperanto even toured -- I saw them at my old school, Oundle -- whereas Alan Parsons Project was not conceived as a gigging concern.
My explanation is that APP had superior marketing. It made maximum use of its connections -- i.e. Alan Parsons engineered DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, and the musicians included John Miles, Pilot and Arthur Brown, each of which would bring in a few more listeners.
Esperanto, on the other hand, made nothing of its connections, or perhaps it had none. I seem to remember the name of Keith Chrismas was bandied about at the time, but I'd never heard of him so it didn't cut much ice with me.
This is definitely worth hearing again if you liked your prog-rock more classical than rock. There are some decent melodies here although, like Gentle Giant, the band don't stick with a riff for very long before getting bored and moving on.

Customer Reviews:
Esperanto, by Rick Braun.......2005-05-25
Rick Braun covers a wide range of moods in "Esperanto" with the smoothest trumpet playing I've ever heard. This CD is as good as it gets, especially with his solo on Villa de Costa, and the songs are all great, from rhythm to smooth. I can't stop playing this album! Braun is exceptionally talented and I highly recommend this album for trumpet lovers and everyone else, because you'll love his music!
Turquiose.......2004-11-07
This track had to be a tribute to Miles Davis, it sounds like some of miles' early music. Great Track!
Another Hit for a Smooth Jazz Superstar!!.......2004-02-25
I have NOT stopped playing this CD since I picked up a copy two weeks ago. Each time I listen to it I hear something new, and my level of enjoyment just keeps increasing.
Ricks mixture of soulful composition and quality personel really highlight his skills as both an artist and producer, and trust me, he has some REALLY talented people working with him on this project. Starting with the lead song "Green Tomatoes" where he once again joins forces with "bwb" cohorts Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown for a SERIOUSLY funky jazz jam session, he features some of the top studio artists in the business on this CD. Rickey Peterson, Mitch Forman, Tony Maiden, Louis Conte, Randy Jackson, Alex Al, Paul Jackson Jr, Gerald "Wonderfunk" Albright, Gregg Karukas, and Jeff Lorber are some of the stars of smooth jazz contributing to this album.
Rick covers all the moods on this CD, from the up-tempo funky "Green Tomatoes" and dance-able "Stereo", to the laid-back love ballard "Turquoise". This is really good stuff, and though he doesn't have any technically challenging performances here, the songs are well written, arranged, and very entertaining. Throw in REAL strings on 4 of the 10 cuts and you have one EXCELLENT album. One worth listening to over and over again.
I'm enjoying it and I'm sure you will too.
warm open sound.......2004-02-05
In the Nordic countries where smooth jazz is not around the airwaves that much, we really are grateful for internet and amazon.com that gives us the chance to lay our hans on the new albums in this format. And Rick Braun is surely one of the best in this genré. All of his albums has at least one truly great track, like "From Manhattan..." on this one (the album "Kisses in the rain" had "Middle of the night" and Body & Soul had "Notorious" - classics both of them). Just the right kind of music for a cold, cold winter (like we're having over here right now).
an extra ordinary perfomance.......2004-01-18
this is a bomb,it is a must for any contemporary jazz fan to own this album.this album define rick as among the best trumpeters in history.
the rythm, the flow of music and the recording of the cd itself is superb.

Sadly Gone.......2004-07-24
Shadowfax was a tremendously talented instrumental group and, with the passing of founder and reedman Chuck Greenberg, they have sadly passed from the scene. This is their last studio release and very worthy of inclusion in one's collection. While not the studio masterpiece that The Odd Get Even was, this is more along the lines of what Shadowfax fans are used to from the group.

Schifrin Strikes Again.......2007-03-28
To many people, Lalo Schifrin is the prolific composer behind countless movie and TV scores. But to those more familiar with his work, he is a musical polymath whose interests and explorations touch on the remotest corners of the musical map. I am somewhat familiar with his work and own several of his recordings. But I hadn't bought a Schifrin recording in years until I stumbled upon Esperanto in the cheapo section at a favorite West Coast music store. Once I saw that Jean-Luc Ponty and Nestor Marconi were both featured in the band it sealed the deal.
When I got it home, it took several listens before I really liked it. Originally, I thought that the opening Pulsations might be the Astor Piazzolla composition of the same name. Its not, but when the violin soars in you know that Ponty is there for sure! Anyway, Esperanto offers a lot of moods and goes off in many different directions. My favorites here are the aforementioned Pulsations, Dance of the Harlequins, and the tango nuevo of Tango Borealis.
With Esperanto, you could say that Schifrin strikes again. Seventy minutes of very listenable jazz and the low price offered by some amazon partners make this a winner. Looking at the list of his plethora of works, I note many others that look interesting. So after hearing Esperanto, I am left wanting to explore the musical world of Lalo Schifrin more.
James Morrison is a revelation!.......2001-04-19
I was at the concert that resulted in this cd, and the translation of the atmosphere that was present that night is well retained on this recording. It is only a disappointment that the magic that is James Morrison and his trumpet acrobatics aren't somehow visually recorded!
The music has it's occassional bumps, mostly due to a particularly annoying synthesiser. He does however 'quote' some of his fantastic bossanova riffs and occassionally some of his 60's themes.
Some transistions will leave you shaking your head.
10 stars if it was allowed!!.......2001-01-15
This live recording is unbelievable. Not only is the music great but the audio is truly extraordinary. In fact, it's the best audio of a live concert I've ever heard. Period. The instruments have enormous presence, depth and clarity. The audio techs truly deserve an award for a new level of quality.
With a host of world class musicians, and exciting compositions, there really is nothing else quite like this recording. Truly unique and extraordinary.
Stunning.......2000-11-05
The first thing you will notice on the album, before even listening to it, is the gorgeous cover art. That's what truly caught my eye, then seeing the name Lalo Schifrin and other musical luminaries, turned this into a must buy for me.
Listening to this CD the first time was an awakening for me as a composer, and breathtaking as a listener. Schfrin seamlessly melds a vast array of styles into one breathtaking, awe-inspiring sonic landscape of mass proportions.
To name highlights is to do an injustice to this piece of music. Every note, every texture, every rhythm is essential to the listening experience as a whole.
Five stars doesn't do this recording justice... Neither would six. For those of you that only know Schifrin's work by the Mission Impossible theme, you would do yourself a favor to pick up this gem. Schifrin is among a handful of compositional luminaries alive today, and this work proves why. Absolutely stunning.

Shazam!.......2002-07-04
This is a fantastic album, and aside from the fact that some of the synth sounds (especially drums) are annoying (IE the toms in overdrive) are incredibley annoying, the placid harmonic vocals, and simple yet layered rythmes are fantastic.
To anyone that loves Kraftwerks more modern Tone, but also things reminiscent of the PetShop Boys, feel free to purchase away!
Kraftwerk, OMD, the nineties and great synthpop.......2001-06-01
Bartos of Kraftwerk fame created this "band" to explore some of the same electronic ideas mined by Kraftwerk in the 1970's. Joining him on two songs are Andy McCluskey, a big Kraftwerk fan, and co-founder of '80's great Orchestral Manuvres in the Dark. "Esperanto," named after an artificial language, sounds a lot like Kraftwerk doing modern day electronica. In fact, this almost a concept album in the subject matter of its songs: reality, communication, fame and technology. The title track features vocoder-like voices, modulated and singing in Esperanto! "Information," and "Crosstalk" and "Overdrive" are in the same vein: hard-hitting, almost industrial, Kraftwerk-sounding danceable instrumentals. The first of two standouts is "Kissing the Machine," which features McCluskey on vocals singing over a sweet, robotic melody. "TV," the best track, is the best reason to buy this cd: synth hooks and samples of broadcasts, the new generation of keyboard-players and know-twiddlers could stand to listen to this track a few hundred times and learn from their elders.
It's Kraftwerk with OMD mixed in!! What a surprise!.......1999-10-23
This is a fine, unsung, unknown album. Karl Bartos was a member of Kraftwerk and he left that band to do this on his own. It is a fine album in its own right - sort of Kraftwerk lite!! But he went one better - he recruited Andy McCluskey - a founder of Orchestral Maneouvres in the Dark (OMD) and probably Kraftwerk's number one fan - to do some singing. The result is magic! If you are a fan of Kraftwerk or OMD you MUST buy this one!!
Kraftwerk on an off day?.......1999-08-06
I read somewhere that J.C. Bach sounded somewhat like Mozart on an off day.Well, former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos split the pioneering German techno band to form his own, Elektric Music. Esperanto sounds like the next Kraftwerk album, romanticizing television watching, and singing the joys of the internet ("Information wants to be free"). There are no bad tracks, but the album is missing something. Still, Kraftwerk on an off day is a compliment, so if you like techno, then you will like this.
Truly Teutonic.......1999-02-24
If you are a fan of the German Electronic music scene, you will love this cd. Every song on this album is likable, meaning you can listen to each of them many times over. If you are a fan of Electro-Tecnho music, I recommend this title very much!!

Art of musical seduction.......2001-09-02
This little known album by Ryuichi is his finest one as his avant-garde music stuff. He's mellowed down considerably recently, perhaps because of his own reputation in the past, producing some banal albums such as Smoochy, BTTB, etc. The general public may be pleased to listen to those banal understandable albums, but the most committed members of his audience would find this album Esperanto much more interesting and even more seductive. The music in the album is self-contained, despite the fact it was supposed to have been composed for an American dancer for her dance performance. As the commentary, which is included in the sold CD case, says (in Japanese), you would feel as if the dance performance were for his music, rather than his for hers.
Raw. Very Original. Funny stuff........2000-11-30
This is one of my personal favorites of Mr. Sakamoto's discs. It is not going to be for everyone. It can't be approached like his pop work or his soundtracks but the overall tone, the sounds, and his best craftsmanship are all here. I like his ecclectic tendencies but I am most impressed here with the originality and consistancy. Mr Sakamoto has reached a place where his music is more evenly constructed with things like Discord, 1996, BTTB, Love is the Devil, but Esperanto was written years ahead of those works. Maybe the consistancy comes from this being music for a ballet but it could also be great music for an animated film. AND it is really funny. The music on Esperanto is very "Modern Dance-like" and I have little patience with that kind of unrelenting starkness and disonance but there is a quality of sound and humor and "taste" here that is is truly inviting. If Mr Sakamoto had decided to pursue this kind of composing I believe he would not have been nearly as commercially successful as he is. But I have never heard any other music like this and I lament that this recording has no siblings.
