Soothing & Stimulating at the Same Time.......2007-07-26

I read about this CD in a book by Julia Cameron. She wrote that when she needs to feel safe and secure, this is what she cues up to set the mood. Since I so enjoy having her as my own personal creative therapist (through her books), I decided to give Hoppe a try. Julia was right-again. The combination of quiet synthesizers and a luminous flute, with simple melodies that gently lead your soul, is a welcome respite from a noisy world. I found the music set my mind free to wander or just float freely. There's a fascinating backstory to this collection of compositions as well.

Massage Music.......2007-03-29

I buy anything from this artist. His music is probably the best I have found to use when I am giving a massage. I am a massage therapist, and in my mind, the background music I use is about 30% of the effectiveness of the massage, so I always try to use music that will calm, soothe , and help relax my clients. The work of Michael Hoppe always does the trick.

Expecting More- Getting Less.......2006-03-16

The sound quality is excellent. The choice in music is disappointing. I can name FOUR Horner movie scores or background music that is breath-taking enough that they should have merited inclusion (but alas were not recorded here).

I don't know the dates when these music pieces were released, but it could have been within a couple of years apart. Why? Because this collection has a few tracks that sound VERY SIMILAR. Hence, this CD does NOT fully explore the extent of this great composer's talent.

nice sampler of Horner's work.......2005-08-15

I had most of these tracks on other CDs, but this is a good sampler of Mr. Horners career on a single CD. There are some tracks which are from Original soundtracks in the Varese back catalogue, but most of hte tracks are re-recorded by the Royal Sottish National and Seattle Symphony Orchestras conducted by Cliff Eidelman, Joel McNeeley and John Debney. James Horner as Best Movie Composer.......2000-02-05

To say that James Horner is the most talented soundtrack composer would be an understatement. To my count he has written more than 10 scores. The score for Titanic is as exciting as it is relaxing. This soundtrack is so well made, that I bought the second one! Like the movie, each peice on the soundtrack builds up to the climax. If I had it in front of me, I would be sure to give specific examples, but unfortunetly, I don't. However, I will say that the peice, Rose, which I believe is #4, captures the true meanig of this outstanding movie, and therefore proves how well a composer James Horner has proven to be.

James Horner and John Williams are the best!!.......1999-04-08

At one time I belived the one and only great modern day film composer was John Williams, this album proved me wrong. James Horner, to me is still not as good as John Williams, but dangerously close. Horner in this album has basically summed up sum of his gratest songs ever written. The greatest song in this album is either Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn End Titles, the Courage under Fire Theme, or Apollo 13 (The Launch). Some other honorable mentions include Aliens (Futile Escape), Titanic(Southampton,Rose , Take Her to Sea Mr. Murdoch,and Braveheart's End Credits, and Cocoon: The Return (Returning Home). Mr. Horner has done a fabulous job in expressing emotion almost as good as John Wiliiams. These 13 collabarations dsisplay emotions such as hope, fright, compassion, and courage. This albums only problem's were the fact it left out the music of some other of Horner's best work(Land Before Time, Glory, and An American Tale). The album ignored Horner's "Rock" titles which include Red Heat, Commando, and Gorky Park. This has to be one of the must buy's of the year. Two Very Honest Thumbs Up For James Horner and Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus.

James Horner joins John Williams as the 2 greatest composers.......1999-04-07

I have thought John Williams was the number one film composer, but now I think he has met his match (Williams is still number 1). James Horner can display different emotions in all of his music. From the martial tone of Courage Under Fire (one of my favorites) to the mystical feeling of Casper and Cocoon: The Return. There is heart pounding Futile Chase from Aliens, and of course the heart wrenching melodies of Titanic. Braveheart gives you the tone of Scottish (the bagpipes, you can't miss them) victory. Both Brainstorm and Once Around, to me, give the feeling of hope. How do you forget the feeling of sucess in Apollo 13 or the intergalactic victory in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. This is the perfect album if you want to hear just the great songs. Horner brings out the true emotion in films just the same way that John Williams does. The only change I would make is to add a couple songs from Land Before Time in this album. Those songs would put this album to a 5. Two Thumbs Up!

A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06

I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."

Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense,for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.

The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.

Sinking-ship soundtracks from diverse media coalesce in this well-produced olio of pleasant renditions conducted by Randy Miller and orchestrated by Donald Johnston. The selections include music to the now historical James Cameron film, including "My Heart Will Go On" in both a solo piano and as a grand easy-listening instrumental. Similar respectful treatments are also provided in the fanfare from Jean Negulesco's 1953 film composed by Sol Kaplan, some of William Alwyn's score to Roy Baker's 1958 British film A Night To Remember, Maury Yeston's compositions for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, and Lennie Niehaus's score for the 1996 television miniseries. This compilation finally gives us access to a piano version of "my heart will go on", which is to say the least the most beautiful way to listen to the melody. Everytime you play track 2, you feel an epiphany running through your body. Let us thank James Horner's genius for the melody, and those at Varese Sarabande for putting together such a wonderful CD. I LOVED THE, CD VERY, VERY MUCH . THE FIRST NIGHT THAT I GOT THE CD I LISTENED TO THE THEME SONG. THEN I REMEMBERED IT. THE CD WAS THE TALK OF THE SCHOOL FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF.

Excellent Supplementary Soundtrack to JH's Original.......1998-07-13

Varese Sarabande has put together an excellent compilation and should help hold over Titanic music fans until James Horner's 2nd Titanic Album arrives in September. The album has a number of instrumental tracks to the James Cameron movie as well as music from the Broadway show, the TV Miniseries from '96 (starring Catherine Zeta Jones), the 1958 British Film "A Night to Remember", and the 1953 Hollywood Film (starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck). Even if one has only seen the recent movie, the soundtrack is worthwhile to add to your collection especially if one likes movie instrumental music and Titanic in particular. There are excellent full orchestra versions of the rousing "Southhampton" and "My Heart Will Go On." There is also an excellent piano version of "Rose's Theme" and an excellent old fashioned dance waltz of "Rose"..."A Life So Changed" is my favorite - the inspiring message of living and thriving after the death of a loved one is very poignant...Other tracks are excellent: "Nearer My God to Thee" is sad and elegiac while Lennie Niehaus's "Titanic" is atmospheric and moody...Overall, a very good instrumental album; worth buying!

Michael Gulezian's unique guitar style, technically dazzling as it may be, is only a part of what makes this CD so memorable; it's his expressiveness that really stands out. The songs are, by turns, exuberant, pensive, haunting, joyful, meditative. I've had this disc for over a decade and the music still feels fresh and new to me. Whenever I'm choosing which CDs to take with me on a trip, this one always seems to end up in the final dozen.

a prescription for sweet dreams.......2004-02-19

I just happened to catch my college radio station playing some tunes off this album and interviewing Michael the afternoon before his concert in the student union back in the mid-90s. One thing that really struck me was when one person called in to say that this music was so beautiful and relaxing that it made them fall asleep. I was thinking the same thing to myself, and Michael said on the air that he considered that comment high praise.

In concert, he's funny, personable, and engaging, though he professes to be very shy. He brings a wonderful multilayered music from one simple guitar, and when it's layered with a few other simple instruments - a chorus without words, a piano, a violin, or a cello, it's magic. This is one of my favorite CDs to fall asleep to, as the music is not only beautiful, but uplifting for the spirits, and can help bring me out of a funk.

It's definitely my favorite of the 3 I have (only missing Language of the Flame). Unspoken Intentions is an early work and it shares some of the same character, though it's not as mature as Distant Memories and Dreams. I like Dare of an Angel least, but I'd need to listen again to articulate why.

About this CD, if you have a change to revie the NAMMYS (Native American Awards Page, you will find this CD Nominated for an Award. The CD is great and ONE OF A KIND, never recorded before and quite original. Too bad some people with no idea of music can say bad things about this CD, I deeply recomend it and I'm sure you will recomend it to your friends and such.

This man is a total farse. None of the credentials he has listed about himself are true. To learn more about this grifter go to [the worldflutes website]The music on his CDs are most likely pirated as the CD that came along with his book "How to play kena" was an exact copy of a CD that he owned (and did not take in any way create). The artists that did perform/wrote this music are not getting the recognition that they deserve for their work.
