1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

By the mid-1960s, bandleader and composer Sun Ra was delving deeply into extended, improvisation-heavy suites like The Magic City. Reckoned to be a tribute to his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, this long, circuitous piece comes in two different takes on the CD reissue, and both takes are rambunctiously keeled on Ra's core band members, tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, who each offer scouring, ear-pinning interludes. Even so, the music here is huge, with sprawling collective improvisatons that burst with wholehearted high energy, suggesting a latent power that Sun Ra often channeled through both his own intricate scores and reams of cover tunes elsewhere in his several decades as jazz's chief outer-space renegade. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL Sun Ra.......2003-01-19

This (IMHO) is one of the finest releases from Sun Ra and the Arkestra. Accessable to the neophyte and satisfying to those familiar with Ra's music. Strong composition and execution. RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Some Truly Great 20th Century Music: Too Good To Ignore.......2001-11-15

I'm not going to compare "Magic City" to other jazz albums of the 60's, because it deserves a wider audience than only Sun Ra fans or free jazz afficionados. This album is distinct and amazing even in Sun Ra's eccentric ouevre, and it is without peer. If you appreciate the myriad attempts of 20th Century composers to reach the musical outer limits, such as those of Webern, Berg, Stravinsky, Varese, Bartok, Messiaen, Boulez, Zappa, etc., this is an album you will want to hear. Its textures, sonorities, and extremes of mood, from humor to terror and dread, put it in the august company of every musician who has put a soundtrack to consciousness and creation, to science and synthesis, to form generating itself in pure music. Get it!

4 out of 5 stars Otherworldly.......1999-12-28

This is not the place to start in avant garde jazz. In fact, I suspect that plenty of perfectly reasonable, open-minded jazz fans will never get into this album. Unlike more accessible albums in the genre (Eric Dolphy's _Out to Lunch_, Ornette Coleman's early albums, John Coltrane's recordings between '61-'65) there's not much for most listeners to touch base with here. Harmony, rhythm, and melody are fleeting; the second half of the epic title track, which features extremely discordant horn blowing, will scare off 99% of the reasonable people.

If you're not completely scared off by this, I strongly recommend buying this album; the title suite is an incredibly intense collective improvisation: Sun Ra plays his eerie clavioline while Marshall Allen manically toots his piccolo and Ronnie Boykins does some killer bowing. Finally the rest of the band joins in to what may be some of the most intense and challenging fifteen minutes ever recorded. It truly is from outer space. The second half of the CD is full of shorter pieces that aren't quite as mind blowing but are still remarkable.

Get it if you dare.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe nobody's reviewed this CD before!.......1999-12-18

This CD is amazing and while I see 13 reviews for Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch," I see no reviews for this cd. This seems to show that people just buy those other albums because they're considered so good (and controversial), but never bothered to delve deep into the vein of free jazz, and this album is one of the greatest in that vein. Sounding harsh at times, this album ebbs and flows like no other. The continuously playing clavioline gives the album a constant theme of eerie unknown, like space, or another world. Yet it always manages to come back to sounding earthly. While Eric Dolphy was amazing and monumental in the same area, he never seemed to have the drive that Sun Ra did, who constantly made his musicians rehearse. This album is amazing and I highly recommend buying it for anyone who seriously listens to jazz, or any kind of music (if you want to have a better life, listen to a wide variety of music, that way you find out what you like.) The Magic City engulfs you and causes you to see things you wouldn't normally see. The songs not only are monumental in their sound, but monumental in their ability to represent visual themes, such as outer space and "the Magic City" itself, Birmingham Alabama. Listen to this CD at your local store, then buy it if you like it.

3 out of 5 stars The forest will echo with laughter.......2006-10-12

This music conjures images of misty mountains, smoke rings, and sojourning hobbits. Non-hippie listeners: approach with caution.

5 out of 5 stars i am reverie: slack of jaw.......2006-10-10

I discovered Devendra Banhart a while back, and looked into other bands that amazon had linked. Not so much luck. This cd, however, is great, I spun it twice in a row from the first listen. I give it the full 5 stars, it is transporting as true art should be. Fully produced, it retains the campy contact high of the acid folk genre, with song and vocal structure in some tracks, others purely instrumental, hearty east/west string instruments, atmospheric electric guitar, enveloping noise, and a western drum set giving the sense of journey. Uplifted, we walk from the dark night of the soul to awakening.

4 out of 5 stars Six Organs Of Admittance - 'Sun Awakes' (Drag City).......2006-08-28

Before a friend talked me into borrowing this CD,I've never even heard of this part space rock, part experimental artist.Turns out it's actually a solo work by Comets Of Fire member guitarist/vocalist Ben Chasney. It's good,if you like this sort of music.Better tracks were "Torn By Wolves",the rhythmic "Black Wall" and the 23-minute "River Of Transfiguration"(perhaps the CD's best cut).Certain listeners MAY get even MORE out of this CD than I did.May appeal to fans of John Fahey,Sun City Girls,Davis Redford Triad and possibly Red Krayola.

5 out of 5 stars A grand album. Six Organs' finest moment........2006-06-19

In case you are not familiar with Six Organs of Admittance, it is the solo project of Ben Chasny (Actually, this was his first musical project, it's just that he's now in bands such as Current 93, Comets on Fire, and August Born). He's released his own material under the name Six Organs Of Admittance for 8 years now, and while very talented, he hasn't made a name for himself outside of the West Coast area. That is, until his album School of the Flower came out, Six Organs' most accesible album to date. Keeping the spirit of the last album alive, The Sun Awakens was recorded in a studio (unlike his earlier albums where he borrowed an 8-track recorder), and by doing so, has expanded his sound even further. This is where Ben Chasny absolutly shines, both musically and spiritually. This is music for the soul.

The first thing you'll notice is how clear the production is. Every instrument stands out, whether it's acoustic guitar, reverbed electric guitar, or persian ney. Chasny's vocals have also improved quite well, helping the songs' emotional peaks. Songs such as "Bless Your Blood" and "Black Wall" both have a psychadelic/Middle-Eastern tinge to them, both backed by incredible percussion by Noel Jon Harmonson. "The Desert Is A Circle" is a very relaxing number, showcasing' Ben's incredible overdubbing skills. "Attar" is another shining moment, sounding much like music for a dark ritual.

However, it is the 23-minute epic "River of Transfiguration" where Ben has truely allowed to spread his wings. Beginning with a 6 minute ambient drone full of persian ney, gongs, and tone generators, a snare drum breaks the spell, and thus the song begins. When it all kicks in, you get this feeling of being cleasned and washed away. Visions came to me when I heard this song, such as endless flowing water, sheets of flame, and snow-capped mountains. It truly is a visionary piece of work.

I reccomend this album to anyone who enjoys music of any kind. It is the best album of 2006, and one of the best albums I have heard in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Magical blast to the 60s past.......2006-02-13

The trio that comprises White Magic bring an ecclectic indie-folk mix of music that either you will like a lot or not care for. My 16 yr. old daughter 'discovered' them in our household, and she's got mixed emotions about this. Me, I looove it. This is their debut EP.

"Through the Sun Door" (6 tracks; 23 min.) is a mood piece from beginning to end. Some of the songs are piano based, others are guitar based, but all of them are rather sparse musically speaking, not that it matters, as the vibe is great all along. The best songs are actually the second half of the EP, starting with a rolling "The Gypsies Come Walking After". "Plain Gold Ringer" starts with singer Mira Billotte singing a-cappella, then joined by bass and drums, and ultimately the occasional piano. Vocally, Billotte brings to mind Grace Slick, and she sounds outstanding. The best track of all is the closer "Apocalypse", which sounds like the 60s never went away.

While this 2004 EP was well received critically, to my knowledge White Magic have not released anything since then, which begs the question why... "Through the Sun Door" is an outstanding collection of music, however short it is, and I highly recommend it. Now let's hope that White Magic will bring us more! BUY THIS!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Short of Magical Genius.........2005-01-26

Chillingly beautiful vocals, dreamy pianos, steady beats, and a perfect strings assortment, this record has it all. This steady record keeps you hooked from the beginning piano loop of "One Note," till the equally haunting "Apocalypse." Each and every song holds its weight, bringing the eerie magic around gypsies to music. I strongly recomend this record, whose only fault is being six songs long, too anyone and everyone. After hearing Mira Billotte's voice, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars excellent ep from mira b. of quix*o*tic.......2004-07-15

this is a wonderful debut, and I hope very much that it will be followed with a full length album. i've always especially enjoyed mira's songs from her former band quix*o*tic, so i was very excited to see that she is now fronting her own band. her songs are so mysterious and intriguing; i'd even say transcendental. mira's songs convey a natural talent that must run in her family, and she is a hell of a songwritter. i almost want to say that some of it reminds me of joni mitchell, but mira has a style that is more interesting and original. my favorite track from the album was "keeping the wolves from the door," but every song on this record is totally worth while.

5 out of 5 stars Mira the Enchantress.......2004-06-08

Inhale deeply the slow simmering psychedelic voodoo vibe of White Magic's Through the Sun Door. If Grace Slick were a Wiccan Witch, this is what it might sound like. The music is intoxicating, hypnotic and haunting in a Jim Morrison-esque "The End" sort of way. Mira Billotte (Quixotic), Miggy Littleton (Ida), and Andy MacLeod (California Speedway) have created a truly "magical" EP that only serves to whet the appetite of anyone lucky enough to fall under their aural spell. A truly remarkable mini-album that demands full-length treatment. I have not been this captivated by any album since hearing Darling Kandie's dark masterpiece, "People Next Door". Succumb to Mira's enchanting voice and feel the Magic...

      4 out of 5 stars after this..........2004-05-27

'The Gypsies Came Marching After' and 'Apocalypse' alone make this worth buying, but the rest of the cd is solid. Encouraging signs for music in general. Kudos to Drag City for picking them up.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

The CD was ordered for the Airborn Symphony. That piece was exactly what we had been looking for and quite outstanding. The rest of the music on the CD has however been somewhat of a disappointment.

2 out of 5 stars Good historical document, not an exciting perf. or recording.......2000-06-02

This recording of The Cradle Will Rock is an important historical recording of the oiginal 1938 Broadway cast. The document presents 56 minutes from the show, leaving something more than half of the performance unknown to today's public. Marc Blitzstein performs at the piano. The recording also presents 37 minutes exerpted from No For An Answer, also performed by its 1940 original cast, and the 3-movement, 13-section Airborne Symphony for orchestra, male chorus, tenor & baritone soli, and narrator.

The format of the recording of The Cradle Will Rock is of scenes introduced by a narrator, musical numbers accompanied by piano, and acted portions of the spoken roles. The liner notes claim that most important revivals of the work use these and other no-budget restrictions imposed by the original opening night. In this recording, the performances are played very close to the microphone, and the piano is always relegated to the background. Some performances are shrill or overly arch, especially in the spoken portions.

The performances captured on this recording attest to its importance as a pace-setting feat. Unfortunately, the renowned director Orson Welles failed to appreciate a need for rethinking the performances for an audio recording. Some casting seems misguided in matching the voices to the characters they portray, especially in which some older characters are played by voices that seem surprisingly young. The reduction of the book to linking narration matches what one might expect had occurred at the alternate theatre to which cast and audience marched after finding themselves locked out of the WPA Theatre on opening night, 1937. However, the reductions of staging and motivations leave some bits of incongruity that might work well on stage but provide comical images while listening. For example, "Scene 4. The lawn of of Mr. Mister's home. Enter Junior Mister and Sister Mister, each reclining in a hammock." or "The Moll sits quietly on the railing in the half light. She begins to speak, and then she sings." followed by-what else?-the Moll actually speaking, and then actually singing. Scene 2 consists only of the narrative precis of what might be an exciting melange of chorus and soloists.

Judging solely from the exerpted product, the book to The Cradle Will Rock expresses everything exactly on the nose, providing little nuance in its polemic. From our perspective more than 60 years distant, the result is a one-dimensional cartoon rather than a persuasive challenge to the status quo. With the lack of revised direction and revulsion toward modifying the stage performance, the music comes across as dated and safe, despite the subject matter. The music and the mileau have some afinity to the music of Dreigroschenoper (Weill/Brecht, 1928), particularly in the incorporation of chorale-inspired melodies for the Mission, scene 3, in the free mixture of popular music genres, and in the occasional love duet. Finally, in addition, nearly every track suffers from an ever-present rain of surface noise from the original disks.

The recorded performance of No For An Answer (1940, recorded 1941) retains some of the audience-distancing quirks that Cradle has: accompaniment is still the solo piano, the voices are still placed on top of the microphone, and the document consists of portions of incomplete scenes. At least the narrative precis of action has been discarded. Weirdly, one scene is shuffled from act one to act two, simply to place so-called character sketches together. The performances are uninspired-with one exception being Carol Channing at a less-ripe age and at a nice juxtaposition to most other singers in this recording-and leave little doubt that one may never see a revival of this work. However, the sound quality is much improved from the recording of Cradle, made only 4 years earlier.

The Airborne Symphony (1946, and recorded in the same year) is more a cantata than symphony, given the vocal forces and the obvious choice to eschew the forms associated with the symphony. The music and its mixture with theme and speaker (Robert Shaw) are reminiscent of A Lincoln Portrait (Copland, 1942) and, at some points, Richard Rodgers and Roger Sessions. The miking of the performance is again heavily weighted in favor of the speaker and solo voices (Charles Holland, tenor, and Walter Scheff, baritone). The work by conductor Leonard Bernstein is gentle, perhaps too deferential to the soloists and slighted to a great extent because of the miking decisions. The text moves from an opening paean to the flights of Icarus and the Wright brothers (first movement), to a tone painting of flight used to advance war and malefaction (second movement), to a glorification of the British and American forces who were victorious against the mid-20th-Century threats (third movement). One section, "Night Music: Ballad of the Bombardier" is a very nice love song to the flyer's "Emily" back home.
