Album Description
Off the northwest coast of Scotland on the Isle of Lewis, rise the Standing Stones of Callanish. The main ring of these stones is often called the Scottish Stonehenge. The importance and purpose of the stones is not known. Theories suggests possibilities such as a transducer for healing energy, an astronomical observatory, a place of sun-moon worship, or an entryway to places that exist in Celtic myth.
Jon Mark's
The Standing Stones of Callanish conveys the mystery and otherworldly quality of these stones. The melodies have a gentle Celtic quality and repeating themes drift dreamily through various harmonic backgrounds. The music is intelligently constructed and deeply inspired. Using synthesizers, Jon Mark creates a delicate and rich orchestral sound that seems to arise directly from the misty Isle of Lewis, the hallowed site of the Standing Stones of Callanish.
Customer Reviews:
Nite Scapes 95.5 Chicago.......2006-10-19
Ever since I used to use cassette tapes, I would tape 95.5 on late Sunday nights in Chicago and then listen to the New Age music in my car during the week. Jon Mark defines my New Age music experience. He is the best. I highly recommend this albumn for the indvidual that wants reading or reflecting music that lasts. On my iTunes my Jon Mark albumns are ranked "most played". Several plays behind are my trance additions with Paul Van Dyke, Sasha, and Paul Okenfield.
Calming Mood Music.......2005-06-28
Jon Mark uses a synth to evoke the mystery of ancient Scottish megaliths. The music can induce a trancelike state of calm. It has a high-fidelity sound quality. It's very minimalist (not "party music" nor traditional folk music).
Top Rated!.......2005-03-22
For anyone who loves ambient, "new age" type music, this disc is a must. The pieces here are very soothingly played on synthesizer. This album is one that is great to play after a long taxing day. I have had this in my collection for 15 years and it always close to my CD player. The songs "Chloe's Day" and "Journey Across the Crystal Sea" are worth the price of the disc alone. Highly recommended!
Moody, somber and haunting!.......2004-08-29
This 1988 debut album from New Age guru Jon Mark is a haunting tribute to the distant Ancient past and is a vivid musical portrayal of the Standing Stones of Callanish in the British Isles. The music is dark, melancholy, and ambient. "Chloe's Day" is my favorite song on this album having a celtic tone to it and a gray cloudy-evening atmosphere to it. Not all of this album is dark. "A Journey Across the Crystal Sea" is a very pleasant song with a much sunnier mood than the rest of this album. The last song "Remembering" is a tear-jerking closer with an eerie mood. This is one of the best New Age electrnoic albums of the 1980s and is highly recommended.
Buy it for "Eye of the Hawk".......2004-01-10
Otherwise, I can't say the rest of this album did much for me. But the track "Eye of the Hawk" is a singularly magnificent piece of 80's electronic/symphonic musicianship, and rescues this disc (in my opinion) from being just another ho-hum celtic-flavored snoozer. I first heard "Eye of the Hawk" in 1988 on the radio, and I never got the name of the artist, nor the album. It was ten years before I heard it on the radio again, and you can be sure I jotted down the album artist and title with much verve. I was therefor disheartened to find that so much of this record does not live up to the lofty heights reached so early in its track progression.
