Beautiful Collaborative Work........2007-05-30

I bought this album(on vinyl)at around the time of its release('83)from an import-record shop as part of an expanding interest in solo-acoustic guitar music. I already had some John Fahey and Leo Kottke, William Ackerman had been mentioned to me, along with Michael Hedges(who is present on a couple of tracks), as being worth investigation.
I didn't realise it at the time, but this album and its immediate predecessor, were part of a migration away from the solo guitar work of "The Turtle's Navel", to a more collaborative approach. This turned out to be a good thing.
Incidentally the vinyl LP was actually titled "Past Light... Visiting" which I prefer, and took to be a reference to the fact that just over half of the compositions were written some time prior to recording.

The music on the album is amazingly varied and ranges from gently contemplative solo pieces, via the rhythmically hypnotic ambient sounds of 'Synopsis', to the energised soaring of 'Visiting', 'Ventana' and 'Rain to River'. In my Opinion these three tracks are the heart of the album and each starts quietly before building steadily to a powerful climax.
While the music can be soothing or relaxing at times it always commands the attention and is rich in melodic content.

When you consider that the artist was, at this stage, primarily known for his solo performances it is perhaps most interesting it is his collaborators often dominate procedings. A fabulous example of this is 'Visiting' where Chuck Greengerg's Lyricon is allowed to fly while guitar and Michael Manring's wonderful base drive the piece to conclusion. Also Jamil Szmadzinski's incredible violin 'solo' on 'Ventana' is allowed to take centre-stage.

The construction of the album is excellent too with the tracks flowing perfectly together; quieter, more contemplative pieces bracketing the more energetic moments and 'Night Slip' is the perfect closer after the high tempo finale of 'Rain to River'(possibly my favourite).

So in the end I didn't get a solo-guitarist's album(although there is plenty of superb guitar music here)so much as a collaboration in which the players 'perform the work'.However I did get an album which still sounds as fresh as it did when I first bought it(nearly 25 years ago!) and still counts as one of my all-time favourites.

Some may disagree, but having explored albums by this artist both before and after, I find this to be the best. His earlier work was too clearly an attempt to emulate Fahey/Basho and his later work, sad to say, is disappointingly bland in comparison to this.
This work captures the artist at a point of transition between two styles and, in capturing the best of each, surpasses both.

What can be nicer than fusing every magnum opus onto one cd? Will Ackerman made his way into my view of music through the Echoes radio program on 88.5. Even then, his music was unparalleled to other guitarists. Every couple of nights, his music would come on and I'd know it first hand. His skills with the guitar opened me to a new world of music which to this day has grown stronger and made me more willing to explore new areas in music.

Making Connections.......2004-09-08

This is Ackerman's fifth album, and his style has steadily matured from the simplicity of a pure solo acoustic guitar to a complex sound full of acoustic and electronic resonances and a penchant for intimate ensemble playing.

Gone forever are the John Fahey and Robbie Basho influences. Or, rather, they have become completely assimilated in the artistry which will mark much of Ackerman' s productions - a heady combination of experiment, jazz, and, yes, 'new age' as well.

This new habit of going beyond solo performance has both good and bad points. The good is that Ackerman is no more compromising in his choice of partners than he is over the quality of his own musicianship. The combinations, which include musicians like Michael Hedges (Night Slip), Joan Jeanrenaud and other members of the Chronos Quartet (Garden and Three Observations of the Ocean), and Chuck Greenberg (Visiting) amount to wonderful music.

What one misses, though, is the delightful work Ackerman can do as a soloist. For this you will now have to turn to his older albums. It is always hard for a fan to realize that making do with the same old formulae can never satisfy creative musicians. Ackerman is one of those who are always looking for new transitions, not as gimmicks, but as a means of self-expression. For us, as listeners, we have the reassurance that great music awaits us whenever we listen.

Ackerman - what he does..........2004-06-11

William Ackerman is a delightful solo guitarist and a charming live performer, but I think he's at his best bringing out the talents of others. This album is a perfect example. Here Ackerman weaves rich and driving tapestries behind and around the "leads" of his co-performers. Shadowfax's Chuck Greenberg ads his soaring lyricon to Visiting to make it one of the highlights of the genre - I don't care what the Amazon reviewer says - and the album is worth it for this cut alone. But this cut isn't alone and the rest will engage you with a variety of different instruments and styles - all elevated and unified by Ackerman's artistry.

california dreaming.......2002-06-07

this was the first william ackerman recording i heard. i was in the navy and going through a mid-life crisis. for some strange, truly wonderful reason, this disc reminded me (and still does) of california - which was a much happier time in my life. every time i need to meditate, cry, or just embrace life, this is the album i listen to. by the way, it means everything in the world to me that this album cover just came back signed, ``thanks for listening linda, will.''

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

very disappointing.......2005-08-02

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

If you've read this far, you're probably considering purchasing this CD because you're a fan of the fine British air war films and their soundtracks from which the selections contained therein are taken. Except that they're NOT, in fact, taken from the soundtracks: they're copied, very poorly, by a British "concert" band, the kind you can hear on any Sunday afternoon on any bandstand in any public garden in Blighty. Buyer beware then, mate. But I say, old boy, it would be awfully jolly if you could manage the genuine article sometime, what, there's a good chap. Pip, pip, cheerio!

"Ghosts of the Abyss Soundtrack".......2003-04-15

The music fits the film well. The best tune on the album is a remake of Darkness, Darkness (youngbloods 1967) sung by an unknown artist Lisa Torban. A voice that just makes you repeat the selection over and over.

Oh my goodness! This was the best 3D Imax I have ever seen! (and yes I've seen more than one). And the soundtrack made it as good as it is! The song at the end called Darkness, Darkness was so fantastic and made me cry so much! Best ever!

Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.

Great recording!.......2003-09-22

There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.

Good and Bad.......2000-04-09

I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.

This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11

I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.

Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.

As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.
