Sun-kissed house grooves are once again the order of the day on Those Things, the second solo album from Bay Area DJ/producer Miguel Migs. In contrast to 2002's Colorful You, however, this go-round has Migs taking his blissed-out beats in a more organic direction by throwing a variety of live instruments into the mix. On the title track, for instance, house queen Lisa Shaw's vocals bounce atop a percolating bassline that juggles multiple synths, rhythmic funk guitar, an overdriven guitar solo, and vocal samples. Other tracks are laced with trumpet, sax, and congas. For the most part, this eclectic approach bears fruit by giving Migs a deeper bag of tricks to use in working his deep house magic: "So Far" and "Mesmerized," which both feature the superb vocals of LT (a.k.a. Aya) have more than enough of that bubbly warmth that put Naked Music on the map, while more novel tunes like "Shake It Up"--where Brand Nubian's Sadat X tells the tale of a night out with some cliché but more playfulness--are unexpectedly beguiling. Migs, widely known for his skills in the studio, has hit a new a high with Those Things, and even dance-music skeptics will find this organic flavor of house difficult to resist. --Brent Kallmer

Album Description

Those Things, the anticipated sophomore artist album by electronic music's soulful maestro Miguel Migs...The long-awaited follow up to the internationally acclaimed `Colorful You'( released in 2003 on Astralwerks/ Naked Music. Those Things finds Migs meandering into the old school funk and soul side of the dance music spectrum focusing on his trademark high caliber production and tasteful quality song writing that he is best known for. Drawing inspiration from his diverse musical taste and background, Miguel serves up a tasty blend of 13 original songs featuring an all star line up of special guest vocalists, including Reggae legend Junior Reid, Sadat X from Brand Nubian Fame, LT, Lisa Shaw, Tim Fuller, and Fred Ross from Sly and the Family Stone. The result is an album that takes you on a ride through a unique listening experience crossing the boundaries of dance music with a sound that Miguel has seamlessly blended together.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely tunes........2007-08-05

Yeah, I see what the other reviewers are saying about disappointment. However, those deep Migs tracks on this album are worth the five stars. He could have done better on some of the tracks, but those deep tracks are too special. Man, track #13 has me open. Repeated it about 10 times after a couple of glasses of wine. Migs is on to something. Track #12 is so soulful. It had me in shock when I first heard it. I spent the full $14 at Amoeba in Berkeley. I had it in my CD changer when driving down Shattuck. Had goose bumps when making left turns in the A4. Buy this album. Peace from a Migs/deep house fan.

4 out of 5 stars Miguel Can Do No Wrong.......2007-07-29

Miguel has released better things but, "Those Things", will stand the test of time; a truely great Dance album. It features his best abilities to take on what the INDUSTRY asks of a Star. He is able to master both the resurgence of "Rock" as a driving force in the sound these days as well as the mainstay vibe of "Hip Hop". Thank the Heavens that his genius comes out in every track after #3. In fact, the title track #5, "Those Things", is quite simply, unsurpassed. If you haven't purchased this one yet and you truly appreciate Deep House and the eclectic verve that I beleive only comes from the Bay Area please don't hesitate.

4 out of 5 stars Different from the Norm Yet Catchy.......2007-06-25

Sometimes it takes going away from a certain style of music to find out what you are really capable of creating. Migs on the other hand did a wonderful job with his latest album "Those Things". Although it isn't his ususal style, I was still impressed with this album. It's not a album to club to but more of a relaxing/ hanging out with friends type of mix. Some of my favorite tracks include "So Far," "Those Things," "Fire,"
"Shake It Up," and "Giving It All". You would not be disappointed with purchasing this album regardless if you are being introduced to Migs for the first time or not.

1 out of 5 stars Mings? it's all over rated.......2007-06-13

he produced a few good cds, used to spin pretty cool....all in the past tense. all his new stuff and parties are true amateur quality. the seams between tracks are obvious, many times he even missed beats, the selection of tracks were real poor... i love deephouse but from now on, i'm not buying any mings. anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Diversified.......2007-05-29

I own every album Miguel has made and in my opinion this album comes straight from Miguels soul. He has also included his reggae feel in this album. I feel this album includes more sub-genres of house music feel than any of his other previous albums. If you want more musical ideas to create your own compositions, this album will trigger more ideas with several subhouse genres.

The seventh installment in the House of Om series features the heavyweight turntable techniques of DJ Mark Farina, who returns to his San Francisco roots eight years after having put West Coast house on the map with the much acclaimed San Francisco Sessions. Farina's style is as hard to pin down as the globetrotting DJ himself, and this mix is no exception. It starts out on a deeper note, with an obscure a cappella that is signature Farina, moving quickly into some uptempo numbers that get the head nodding and the feet shuffling. The mix really lets loose with tracks from Check Diesel, Vibezselect, and the Littelmen before moving into warm, laid-back grooves to bring it home. It progresses nicely, a few dead spots (like the Kerry Chandler track) notwithstanding. While it's a far cry from the original San Francisco Sessions, this mix exemplifies why Farina gets held to a higher standard; he truly is in a league of his own. --Anish Acharya

Such is the sort of success that San Francisco - based DJ/producer Mark Farina has achieved for himself since starting off as a record collector and dedicated beatfreak in the house mecca of Chicago." - DJ TIMES

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Keep on movin in the mix.......2007-07-20

This cd gets five stars not only because it is great jackin house but because Mark Farina himself put it together. Anything this man puts together becomes a masterpiece. Mark still remains one of the true house djs that does not deviate from the path of hosue with cheesy electro bass or poppy chart music. His remixes are so original he makes Paul Oakenfold look like a wedding singer. Some of the very good tracks you'll here him play on tour is the very acclaimed jackin track "whats the time" by Littlemen, "Bleu" by King Kooba, and "Come chill" by vibezelect. In his jazzy phase Mark unleashes "garys groove" which is becoming loved by the like of Dj Heather, Diz, and Dj Sneak. Also look for the very subtle sax riff in Skeleton keys (not even released by the artist yet but you know they gave a copy to Mark). In any case if your a mark fan then you must have this cd to add the compilation you probably already started. Enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Standard.......2007-05-15

Pretty typical set for Farina and as usual, never as good as a live set. Some great tracks and programming is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Farina does it again.................2007-04-20

Yep yep....Mark Farina did it again....simply blowing my mind away with another house mix that will definately keep you moving. A little more uptempo than normal Farina mixes but never the less....outstanding. It just keeps building up to a state where you find yourself just bobbing your head to the funky deep house that made Mark Farina who he is today. Don't hesitate....add this to your collection!!

Hailing originally from Chicago but long associated with San Francisco's jazz-house scene, Mark Farina returns to his bread-and-butter mix series Mushroom Jazz after 2003's eclectic artist record Air Farina. Less laid-back than Thievery Corporation but not quite as deep as Om label mates like Marques Wyatt, the Mushroom records often delve into hip-hop, and Jazz 5 is no exception. But while rhymes and raps jump out alongside snappy beats to startle the listener from chill tune-induced hypnosis, large chunks of the record, especially in the last half, are completely instrumental. Some of Air Farina's electro-funk adventurousness is here as well; check out the dazed and hazy original track "Cali Spaces." Consistently clever and packed with urban energy, it's an ideal Sunday evening record for those not quite ready to let the weekend end. -Matthew Cooke

      Album Description

A true phenomenon in sound encompassing hip hop, soul, and the best blunted beats all mingled to perfection by Farina himself. To the uninitiated, Mark is the master of the blend. Urb Magazine voted him "Best Dance DJ" in their recent January/February issue, and BPM Magazine proclaimed, "For many downtempo fans, 'Mushroom Jazz' is where it all began." The new album features new and unreleased material from the finest in Mushroom Jazz, and includes a bumpin' new original track, "Cali Spaces".

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The soul of Mushroom Jazz is slowly dying..........2007-06-25

First of all, let me tell you that before buying this CD, I was sure that I would be disappointed, cause it was nearly impossible to make better than MJ 2, 3, or 4.

I'm a big fan of the serie, which is in my opinion the best downtempo mixes EVER!

But Mushroom Jazz does not smell like the other MJ...
In fact, I would give 3,5/5 stars for this mix. (5/5 for all the other MJ, except the first). I would give 4 stars for the tracklist. Farina still have very good tastes, and tracks like "Autumn Evening Breeze", "Hollywood", or "This Love Thing" are really sweet. Why not 5 stars? Because I think there are a few tracks whose atmosphere / ambiance don't fit with Mushroom Jazz. "Tribute" for example, or "Down" by Red Astaire. These tracks fit better with old school / dirty / funky mixes. A bit too much of rap tracks as well in my opinion.

But the real problem comes from the mixing. Mark, where is your wizardry?! The mixing technique is just ok... Where are your sweet sound / voice collage through the mix? Inexisting. Overmore, the mix is not a story-telling anymore, the tracks don't flow together. It begins with a sweet & jazzy thing, just next the raw track of Colossus with it's heavy percussion, next again a sweet piano track, and a dirty ambiance next with DJ Numark... well we are far from the perfect structure of it's predecessor (MJ4)with only one rap track (superb track with talented rappers People Under The Stairs) in the beginning, and a female RnB voice in the middle (like in Mushroom Jazz 2), then only instrumentals.
Too much rap or singing is killing the particular dreamy ambiance of Mushroom Jazz unfortunately...

Well, it was the point of view of an elitist fan (lol). I think it's the worst of the serie... It's not the classy/innocent/ urban sound anymore, but more like a common jazzy/funky mix with no particular ambiance.

I think that fans who don't have bought it yet will be disappointed.
But for those who like quality HipHop sounds, it's a very good mix by the way...

But if you are new to mushroom jazz and you want to discover something different, you absolutely must buy Mushroom Jazz 2, and then Mushroom Jazz 4, which are one of my all time best musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars "Grown folks Hip-Hop".......2007-06-22

Trip-hop, ("old-skool, hip-hop without fowl lyrics,") blended with mushroomy jazz notes. If love both yet never heard the two together you are in for a treat. He is a master at what he does. In my opinion, 2 was the best, then 1 then 3.

      4 out of 5 stars Funk'n groov'n.......2007-05-01

Mark Farina was an innovator of sorts; he started implementing jazz into his sets early on. By now the mushroom jazz formula has gotten a bit tired. Besides, where is the jazz? The opening track "Afros In Ya" promises greatness with sax bending in and out of the song, while the slow but funky beat creates a nice acid jazz ambience. From there it goes downhill. The disc has more hip-hop flavor than anything else. Maybe he should have called this one, Mushroom Hip-Hop. Don't get me wrong, I like most of the tracks because they have good beatz, but seriously, this is basically a take off on acid jazz."Autumm Evening Breeze" seems to feature the hip-hop vocals of the Ozomatli singer Zen Dog. Each song flows seemlesssly into the next for one funky groove. The emphasis is more on funk, it is like house music mixed with acid jazz. With songs entitled "Funky For You" you get the idea. Strange Fruit Project's "Maintain" is a nice instrumental that can fit into the electro-jazz label as it leads into a similar song entitled "Back in '92." This isn't my favorite in the Mushroom jazz seies but it is still pretty good. This is recommended for those that believe in one nation under a funky groove.

5 out of 5 stars I Have New Faith In Music Today Thanks Mushroom Jazz*.......2007-03-11

I recently heard a cut off My Yahoo from MJ5 and thought "What the heck- I will try it". After I heard Vol. 5 I quickly turned around and purchased Vol. 4 and Vol. 3 too! Was not disappointed one bit. Truely awesome cuts from beginning to end... just one good one after another. Right on Mark Farina & Co. Next stop, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 baby. All my friends are so jealous too... I won't tell them where I got the music from for a few more days! Hahaha- I'm loving it. Right now Mark and I are the Man.

      5 out of 5 stars Too Unbelievable.......2006-05-21

This album deserves more than 5 stars. Number One is the standard. It knocks you down incorporating jazz and hip hop. I bought it in DC and heard it in Rome. #2 is almost as good as #1. Ditto for #3. Number 4 is terrible. With reluctance, I got number 5. It is soooo goood that you crave for more, and it makes you play all of the rest (except #4). What is so good is that it stays in your head. The beat never goes away. I have looked at the performers individually and bought into them. The OM Sound is great. I can't wait for Mushroom #6.

5 out of 5 stars Kaskade keeps it groovin'.......2007-03-14

This is the ultimate in feel-good music, brought to us by none other than the amazing Kaskade. This CD will perk you up any time of the day, leaving groove vibes all around. It opens up with Tamra Keenan - Here I Am, a track with booming bass lines through out, and a great voice to back it up. One of my favorites on the CD is Kaskade - Everything. When he played here in Austin, he opened with this track, and it was sublime.

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD!!

4 out of 5 stars House of Om: Kaskade.......2007-02-19

As a newbie to this genre of music, I was very pleased with this purchase - this is the ultimate in "feel good" music. The pounding beats and airy vocals that accompany certain tracks just puts & keeps a smile on my face!

My favorite tracks are: HERE I AM, ENDLESS WAY, DON'T GIVE IT UP, EVERYTHING, BACK IN MY LIFE & RIVER OF LOVE

5 out of 5 stars Kaskade: House of OM.......2006-12-21

What are you waiting for? See Kaskade when he comes to your town. Buy his music you will never go wrong. Here I am, is impeccable! Tamra Keenan has a beautiful voice; you can almost feel her emotion spilling through that voice!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-06-12

I started seriously listening to lounge music earlier this year and I highly recommend this album. Very easy to listen to over and over again. I've been listening to it in the car as I drive around Berlin and it is just perfect.

      5 out of 5 stars Hot.......2006-05-24

This is a nice deep house production. If you like this, check out the first full length CD for producer Quentin Allen as Karu. There are other 12" releases on Silver Network, Dadhouse, Winding Road, Mimosa & Smooth Agent. This CD is a very consistant production with a good blend of jazz, hip-hop, techno, neo-soul, and deep house all together. The beats are very crisp and sound good in the car, the house or the club. Some songs tastefully use vocal snippets to add flavor. There is even a track featuring Warren Harris aka Hanna (Shadow Records, Silver Network, Flat & Round, Freerange). If you want good quality deep house, this CD is for you.

San Francisco Sessions is arguably Mark Farina's seminal contribution to the house music community. The disc opens with soothing beach sounds and heavily effected vocals that set the tone for a warm blend of tracks that are both inspired and inspirational. The mix begins to hit stride around track four ( "Things We Used To Do") with its chopped up vocals, stabbing horns, and a breakdown that would destroy any dance floor. As the mix continues Farina layers his signature Mood II Swing a capellas over a number of tracks providing an excellent sense of tension and release. The remainder of the mix moves deftly between instrumental tracks ("Spellbound"), deep and minimal tracks ("Somethin' Else"), and outright funky tracks ("Seriousfunkill"). Mark has certainly thrown down the gauntlet for future contributors to the San Francisco Sessions series, as this disc has both captured, and helped shape, the sound of West Coast house. --Anish Acharya

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN EXPECTED...........2005-10-21

I have to admit that I love Mark Farina. His style and way of blending all the tracks on this compilation are just awesome. I've seen him at the WMC(winter music conference), L.A, San Fran, and Chicago and he has never upset me in the least bit. He is one of my favorites of all time (including Jeno, Dj Dan, Dj Heather, Onionz, Miguel Migs, all the Moontribe heads). I knew that by getting this I wouldn't regret it and you shouldn't either. It's what house is supposed to sound like. Definitely do not miss.....or you'll hate yourself.

5 out of 5 stars In This House.......2004-05-27

Mark Farina created a masterpiece with this mix. While all house-heads are likely to love it, others who have not been exposed to house would love it to0. There is simply nothing to dislike here.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps Spinning- Update- Trying to pick one?.......2004-05-22

I've owned this CD for almost 2 years and it doesn't get much rest. I playit in my car & while I work. Enjoy.

Update: April 6, 2007- I currently own 6 different Mark Farina CDs. Out of my entire collection of 200+CDs all 6 are in the top 15. However, if you are "new" to Mark Farina and looking to just buy one CD (for right now) pick this one. It embodies the essence of Mark Farina and is a classic on the same level as Zero 7 Simple Things, Thievery Corporation Versions and St.Germain Tourist.

Continuing the highly popular Mushroom Jazz series, Mark Farina goes for late-night purple velvet and downtempo 2 a.m. atmospheres on this third installment, resulting in an electronic release for lounge lizards the world over. A basic hip-hop loop is the canvas throughout this 19-track mix, and on it Farina paints a series of smooth, sometimes shady but always sassy portraits that result in a thoroughly credible, electronically glazed slow-jam record. Opening with the wholly seductive cruise control of "California Sauce" by King Kooba, Farina goes on to introduce the silky-smooth, French lounge of Raw Instinct's "De la Bass," the late-night Manhattan flavors of Herb Alpert's "Flirtation," and the warm Philadelphia evening breeze of Slide Five's "Streamline." In deftly fusing jazz and hip-hop with downtempo beats, Farina has produced a mix that works for thoughtful driving, romantic evenings, and hip soirées. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars Not the best, not the worst!.......2007-07-01

Yeah! Mushroom Jazz 3 is very good, but not as good as MJ2 and 4 which are real masterpieces.
In contrary to volume 5, the soul of Mushroom Jazz is there, with this particular "classy urban ambiance". Excellent track selection as always, but there's a track which does not flow with others in my opinion : Herb Alpert - Flirtation. It's raw jazz, it's not "filtered" and "minimalist" like the other jazzy tracks used in Mushroom Jazz (just remember Pepe Bradock - Un Pepe Dans La Dentelle, in Mushroom Jazz 2, or Fat Jon - No, in Mushroom Jazz 4)
The flow of the album is not perfect but it goes in a right and coherent direction (again, not like MJ 5...really disappointed with this one).
And of course, the excellent voice collage through the mix makes it marvellous and unique...

Favourite tracks : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12 (but difficult to tell you really because the mixing is so good that this mix is like one big track of 72 minutes)

Buy it people, you won't be disappointed! Mushroom Jazz 3 is a perfect interlude between the two masterpieces MJ2 and MJ4...

4 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Cuts!.......2005-11-05

I may have been a bit late when I fell for Om Records artists and releases. I started out listening to some of their Om Lounge cd's in 2000 and instantly fell for the style and sound. After hearing vol 3 of that series I instantly wanted to check out some of their other artists and was pulled into the realm of King Kooba and several others, noticing remixes and just some fresh and unique takes and sounds. Mark Farina is a DJ/Producer on the label that I also got into late. The Mushroom Jazz series now spans 5 volumes, with each volume having it's own unique identity.

I honestly love the tunes on this - what a sensational selection! It's got an urban feel through and through with loads of beauty in the songs. Starting out with King Kooba's "California Sweet", and diving straight into the classy "De La Bass" instrumental by Raw Instinct, you know you're on a journey. Great guitar and flow. After the vocal to Raw Instinct's second edit, you're guided into an instrumental and beats bliss with DJ Presto and Mateo & Matos. This is just the beginning! When you get up to Gripper's "Jazz Cop", the beat kicks and drops, and you're pulled into People Under the Stair's "Schooled in the Trade". I dig that track... and morever I like The Unspoken Heard's "Trackrunners" and definitely enjoyed the instrumental vibe on Que D's "Rock Box"... which is honestly FAR better than the vocal. ALl of this intertwined to the Billie Holiday inspired Jaffa vocal edit of "Sneakin'".

I have to recommend this. It's a mixed cd and is loaded with soul, urban essences and broken beats. To be honest, I prefer the vinyl set just because the tracks aren't mixed but you do miss a few songs with the vinyl package. It wasn't totally flawless, however - on occasion, I think that Jaffa's track was slid in way too much with the other tracks and when other cuts are sampled too much, to me sometimes it takes away from the music. But it's hardly enough to deter anyone from this - check it out and the rest of the series! If you dig this, you'll probably also like DJ Cam's "Mad Blunted Jazz" & hi DJ Kicks, Dr. Bob Jones "Trust the DJ" & maybe Mr. Scruff's "Solid Steel".

      5 out of 5 stars Smooth.......2004-12-21

One of my absolute favourites right now!

Stay away from the first in this series of four. The rest are superb...

5 out of 5 stars The best of the MJ collection.......2003-11-10

This one says it best - a triptifying blend of jazz, soul, and R&B elements. I am amazed this is being mixed - it sounds studio-edited - but it really doesn't matter either way. Stick in the player and chill, man.

      5 out of 5 stars So Lovely........2003-04-25

DJ Mark Farina did a wonderful job with this third compilation of jazzy hip-hop tracks. It's such a delight to listen to and it easily floats from one song to the next, and all the tracks are good. I find myself playing it over and over, it's impossible for me to get tired of this album. It offers a wide variety of tempos but it's mainly an album one would play for any type of activity, such as: Cruising in your car at night, cleaning the kitchen, just kicking back in your recliner chair and meditating, or simply providing chilled out background music for a party. You can't go wrong with buying this volume, there is something for everybody on this, trust me.
