Anyone who thought that Tim Hagans's freewheeling 1999 release, Animation/Imagination was primarily a studio creation will be pleasantly surprised with that album's live follow-up: Re-Animation: Live in Montreal. Where the original Animation thrust the usually bebop-identified trumpeter into an improv-heavy setting that relied on preprogrammed drum loops and textures courtesy of several drum & bass DJs, the new live recording by the core of musicians who recorded that album ups the ante even further.

A live recording from the group's first concert date, Re-Animation shows Hagans continuing to push the envelope far beyond the string of bebop-like releases that marked his career until last year. It's fitting that Hagans's racing trumpet paid homage to fusion-era (and after) Miles Davis on Electrifying Miles, a sprawling big-band session with the Finnish UMO Jazz Ensemble. Clearly indebted to the high fusion of Miles, Hagans's "Hud Doyle," "Are You Threatening Me?" and "Animation/Imagination" sound almost as if they were lifted whole from Miles's Pangaea. Still, this isn't a simple retread: the presence of DJ Kingsize, who layers in furious drum & bass loops that work remarkably well with Billy Kilson's frenetic drumming, and keyboardist Scott Kinsey, who adds some random sampling effects to the group's electronic textures, push the album into new terrain. Hopefully, Re-Animation won't find the same negative-crossover that kept Davis's fusion classics out of print for years. Hagans's set might be perhaps too sample-heavy and drum-loop-driven for jazzheads and not bass-heavy and concise enough for the dance floor drum & bass crowd. Both those crowds though, will find plenty to feast on here if they listen with open ears. --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars DJ improves the mix.......2001-08-28

The DJ in the mix makes for a worthy addition to anyone's collection of semi-jazz. If weather report were still together, they might be delving into this kind of soundscape. Hagans is a brilliant improviser. I hope that this sound catches on. Also try, Solid Ether by Molvaer. Kudos to everyone involved.

4 out of 5 stars Miles is still alive!!.......2001-04-16

This music smokes! If you love electric Miles Davis buy this disc. You will not be disapointed. It's a cross between Pangea & We want Miles... and a whole lot more!! I would have given it a 5 if it was Miles :) Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Hagans, just amazing........2001-03-13

This is such a great cd. All the tracks will keep you at the edge of your seat. The highlights for me would have to be Trumpet sandwich, Hud Doyle, and Are you threatining me. The whole band plays incredibly well with such great intesity. The soprano sax of playing of Bob Belden really adds a lot to the live performance. This CD is definitly a must for anyone who has open an open mind and ears. Great cd. This is the way that jazz is going.

4 out of 5 stars Progression in the making.......2001-03-13

I bought this cd because I heard the studio Animation/Imagination, which I fell in love with. I really enjoyed the intensity of the studio album, and I had to assume that the live would be so much better. I was not displeased at all. This album has many intense moments. Hagans and Belden work really well together, and Kilson on the set is intense. This cd needs to get out more, to show that jazz has to progress. I would give this cd a 4 1/2 but there is none so I'll give it a four. It's still a great cd, and i would recomment it anytime.

Album Description

The first of the Boot Moon series, "Live in Montreal 1977" captures the band on the same tour. What is interesting for the fans is to compare this release with the aforementioned Virgin release and notice the many differences. When you hear those differences you can see why the band is so heavily bootlegged.

The second in this series captures the band on home turf with Live in Aachen 1981. Following in the success of their recent Virgin releases Force Majeure and White Eagle, this era is seen by many fans as their 'golden period'. The band had become more structured than on their earlier albums with a less improvised edge to their music. This change was accelerated by the advent of sequencers and drum machines, of which Tangerine Dream were seen by many as leading exponents.

In conclusion the Boot Moon series provides a unique insight into the band's live evolution and is essential to both causal supporters and die-hard fans of the band alike.

This series is designed to capture the high points of the band's live concerts over three decades, making them available to the band's sizable fan base in deluxe packaging and at reasonable prices. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TRACK ERROR HAS BEEN CORRECTED!

4 out of 5 stars Tangerine Dream - 'Live In Montreal,Canada' (Boot Moon) 4 1/2 stars.......2007-04-02

Very good 2-CD/2 hour live performance from the German kings of synthesizer progressive rock, Tangerine Dream. Show took place on April 9, 1977. Total of nine semi-mind altering tracks for your pure listening pleasure here. Personally, cuts here I dug the absolute most were the 24-minute "Thrid Movement", a bit of krautrock madness-the 20-minute "Fourth Movement" and the rather sedate "Bonus Track 3". Very enjoyable. 'Live In Montreal' is from a series of live vintage Tangerine Dream recordings that officially compete with the much-circulated band's bootlegged shows. After just one listen, you'll fully understand WHY fans are willing to take time to hunt down such albums. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beware of disc 2.......2006-02-03

The music is indeed no doubt flawless vintage baumann years. Great improvisation pounding sequencers scorching guitars. Unfortunately the correction on the second disc still hasn't been done. There is no Montreal cd 2 this contains AAchen disc 2 tracks. Even if you buy the AAchen set you will end up with double Aachen cd 2. I made inquiries and they say this was done intentinally for some reasons unknown. I suggest Amazon should make a note so buyers will not be decieved. I feel so short changed since the montreal disc 2 is nowhere to be found but only on the Tangerine Tree webring.
Special and many thanks to Royce Mangubat M.D. of the Philipppines for ordering these cds for me from Amazon. Thank you Royce!!

5 out of 5 stars Flawed beauty! PLEASE read!.......2004-05-11

NOTE! This Cd set has half of another concert accidentally inserted as disc #2! It is widely known and talked about on the T.D. fan-sites,...but ,to get all of this show, you must buy the Tangerine Dream Live in AACHEN ,Germany set! Then switch the second discs in the two sets.

Both concerts are great, and you'd probably want both anyway...but now you know the secret!

NOW a review for you!

This show is one of the same vintage as T.D.'s ENCORE (live in USA) release from the 1970's.This is different enough to warrent your buying it,heck each show, night to night, was a different beast! PLUS it is a relic of the PRIME Tangerine Dream era!

Now one drawback, other than the disc "switcheroo" noted above....There are DJ announcements whispered over the music at various points through the show. But I find them quite neat, and not too diverting. They make you feel like you are listening to the actual broadcast ,at the time of broadcast in the 1970's! A nice creepy feeling of time-slip...to go with this creepy electronic freak-out of a show.

This is a great concert! But you will have to buy the Aachen disc set to get it all.

5 out of 5 stars The last of the 80's performances.......2007-01-19

This show is the last one by the 1980's incarnation of the band. I really like this show although I do think they played a tad better on this tour. I saw them in Berkeley and LA on this tour and they were great. The first three songs on here all flow in and out of each other very well. Starting with the improv:Entry Of The Crims starting with Bob, Ade and Tony. Bill comes in near the end and Bob starts with the opening to Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 3. This is the 80's lineup at the top of their game, fast tight and intrecate. As this ends, Ade starts banging out the chords to Thela Hun Ginjeet which is played so fast it must have sent at least 300 dancers to the hospital that night. Next up is the instrumental Red. The 80's lineup of this band did such a wonderful job on this song. The pretty Matti Kudasai which is really a wonderful love song and a nice change of pace from what has come before. Next are three songs from the band's then newest Three Of A Perfect Pair. Industry, Dig Me and Three Of A Perfect Pair followed by Indiscipline. The second half starts with the Beat song Sartori In Tangier and then another Discipline song Frame By Frame. The band then returns to the new album with a nice Man With An Open Heart. This is followed by one of Beat's best songs Waiting Man. Followed by the song that was the new single Sleepless. I like what the 80's lineup also does with Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 2. Like in their versions of Red this lineup gives new life to this song. Discipline is nice. The band ends the show with probably this lineup's two most known songs Heartbeat and Elephant Talk. All in all, worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Crims.......2006-07-09

This has got to be one of the GREATEST archive releases I have ever heard along with the Who's 'Live at the Isle of Wight 1970'. This got me into the 80's incarnation of Crims and almost immediately made Adrian Belew my favorite vocalist for the band (although it is a difficult to say because Lake was probably the best vocalist, Wetton sings on my favorite album, 'Red', and Belew is probably my favorite vocalist).

The track selection here is great. Aside from the opening improv 'Entry of the Crims', all of the songs are amazing. For those of you that like old-school Crims, there's the instrumentals 'Red' and a sped-up 'Larks Tongues in Aspic Part II'. For those that like 80's Crimson atonality, there's 'Indiscipline', 'Dig Me', and the instrumental 'Industry'. For those that like tight instrumentals, there's 'Sartori in Tangier', 'Larks Tongues in Apsic Part III', and 'Discipline'. And for everyone else, there's the groovy 'Thela Hun Ginjeet' and 'Heartbeat', the Genesis-like 'Man With an Open Heart', the classic 'Elephant Talk', the almost frightening 'Sleepless', the slowed down 'Frame by Frame', the cryptic 'Waiting Man' and 'Three of a Perfect Pair'. And of course the beautiful 'Matte Kudasai'.

Well, I believe I just covered the whole album. It's certainly the best Crimson live release I've heard (and I've heard alot, 'The Nightwatch', 'USA', 'B'BOOM', 'Epitaph', 'VROOOM VROOOM', and 'Heavy ConstruKCtion') and the one where the tightest playing is. Buy it today.

4 out of 5 stars Very good; but could have been better.......2005-05-20

I don't think that this CD quite captures the best of the 1984 tour. This was the last show of the tour. It probably would have been better to take highlights from the tour instead of doing a complete show.

This is the early eighties version of King Crimson. It is really a superstar band with Robert Fripp (of course) and Bill Bruford, along with the great Tony Levin and Adrian Belew.

Each disc is around 52 minutes long. The sound quality is very good, with very little audience noise. There is some talking between some of the tracks by Adrian Belew (Belew became the spokesman for the group; in previous versions of the band, it used to be Fripp). At the end of the second disc, there is a couple of minutes of silence, followed by more Belew talking.

The second disc is also "enhanced". It includes some files you can play on your PC. It is basically advertisements for other CD's. It doesn't work very well.

Overall, this is a very nice concert, with energetic performances. Most of it is like the 3 albums King Crimson put out at the time, Beat, Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair. There is a lot of Belew's personality put into the songs.

Much of the music contains driving rhythms. Levin on bass and Bruford on drums are more like lead players than a background rhythm section. They pull and drive the band.

My memory of seeing them during this tour (in Berekley) was that they were even more energetic, and more of the concert centered around those driving rhythms. The whole audience was up and dancing and weaving back and forth. It was an unusual sight as the audience bopped up and down perfectly to the rhythms. Also, Belew was a wildman and all over the place. You don't quite get that feeling with this CD set. Maybe this particular concert isn't as good, or maybe you just have to be there.

It is interesting to see Bruford continuing his collaboration with Fripp, being burned a couple of times. He left Yes, at the height of Yes's popularity to join King Crimson in the seventies. But, a few years later, Fripp thought the world was going to end and he disbanded the band.

Adrian Belew has an interesting solo career and has played with many different bands. He had a really interesting stint with Frank Zappa.

Tony Levin is currently puttin out some of the best music around. Check out his Upper Extremeties, or his collaboration with Bruford.

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat sloppy at first, the band warms up and are killer.......2004-12-05

The first CD of this final concert by the 80's afrobeat crim starts off a little shaky. There are fudged guitar lines especially during the messy Thela Hun Gingeet and the boys seem a little off. Red and Matte Kudasai are good, but unremarkable. But then comes "Industry", wow. It's worth the price of the cd right there, much darker than the studio version. The Band is warmed up and focused and henceforth Absent Lovers only gets better. "Three of a Perfect Pair" is played with a fire not found on the studio album and Bruford's drumming on "Indicipline" is remarkable. By the time of "Frame By Frame", Crimson are smoking hot, the ensemble playing is other worldly. Fripp plays an amazing solo during Sartori in Tangier, the first song on the second CD. Adrian's guitar solo for "Lark's Tongues in Aspic Part 2" is appropriately insane. The band's interplay on "Discipline" is astounding. "Heartbeat", a song that was never one of my favorites, actually sent chills down my spine. I've never heard a better live version of "Elephant Talk" with Tony's Chapman Stick intro and Fripp's embelishments to the rhythm parts, wow again.

Excepting the first few tunes from CD One, every song sounds better than its studio counterpart. They're more immediate, and the band takes chances. Ultimately the show is a very very good one, the playing and sound quality are excellent. But as another reviewer has said the Simmons electronic drum sound which was so cool at the time (I saw Crim on this and the Discipline tours) has not dated well. Neither has the guitar synth and effects that Robert and Adrian use, oh well. Absent Lovers is a snapshot of the time and I have to judge it as such. Ultimately, complaints aside, Absent Lovers is an excellent album. It shows what the 80's Crimson were capable of on a good night. These guys were/are fantastic musicians who communicated well together on stage like few other bands.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Music, But the Liner Notes Are a Drag.......2004-10-23

The legendary mid-70s King Crimson line-up of Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Bill Bruford, and David Cross earned its praise through elaborate, slowly developed ideas which were always brilliant when they finally burst in full glory. Almost to the contrary, the early 80s 'Crimcarnation' of Fripp, Bruford, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew made its mark with spontaneous, fast and complex music, which when heard in the studio one might suspect that the talent was actually owed to engineering and production tricks. But with "Absent Lovers," here it is live on stage, and it's as real as the talent in the hands of each member.
The 80s line-up's last performance, and last gathering for nearly a decade, this was recorded live in Montreal in 1984, "for posterity, whoever posterity is," as singer Belew puts it in his oddball conversations to the wildly fanatic audience. While "The Nightwatch" was the perfect live document of the mid-70s King Crimson, "Absent Lovers" is the ultimate document of the work done by this version, culled mostly from the three albums they recorded together ("Discipline," "Beat," and "Three Of a Perfect Pair"). The flawless recording and sound quality prove without any doubt that these complex, challenging structures and often speed-of-sound performances were not just studio voodoo, and these four men together created one of the most jaw-dropping Crim sounds yet. The group breezes through the essential material from their three albums together, as well as some favorites from the 70s, 'Larks' Tongues In Aspic Part 2' and the well-structured 'Red,' a wise choice rather than acknowledging the 70s with something standard like 'Easy Money.' The performances of the then-newer material are interesting as well; Belew's spoken word part through 'Indiscipline' is now turned into the screaming of a maniac, and 'Thela Hun Ginjeet' is given a more instrumental approach (which might be disappointing for those who enjoyed the taped voice-over in the original studio version). Other songs like the melancholy 'Waiting Man' and 'Matte Kudasai,' or the more erratic 'Man With An Open Heart' and 'Three of a Perfect Pair' carve in stone the talent it took for a challenging band like King Crimson to muster up some slightly pop senbilities. The instrumentals are, as always, done with brilliancy (notably 'Entrance of the Crims').
"Absent Lovers" does the 80s line-up of King Crimson more justice than any compilation/best-of album could ever do. But most fans who buy this 2-disc set will enjoy only the music, as Robert Fripp's long-winded liner notes yet again describe the business scams of the band's former label E.G., something Fripp has difficulty letting go of, and are full of his boasting about the ethics and practices of the new Discipline label, which the guitarist seems to think are the saints of the music industry.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Live Album.......2007-06-25

Wow, it's another great duet effort by two great musicians from Brazil; On one hand you have Maestro Marcos Valle, one of the few original monsters from the Bossa Nova era still going super strong, and on the other hand Great Victor Biglione, a master of Jazz guitar.
Their combination here is on the jazzy side (which actually suits both of them perfectly) with the addition of a great singer who has recorded with Marcos lately, Patricia Alvi.
It's absolutely amazing the new arrangements these two have been able to come up with for many of these Bossa Nova gems; playing mostly Marcos' compositions along with other ones from other Maestros like Luiz Bonfa (Manha de Carnaval), Milton Nascimento (Fe Cega, Faca Amolada), Egberto Gismonti (Frevo) etc. etc.
And what strikes me the most out of this recording is: 1) Marcos' voice is amazingly up-to-date; it still sounds like it did 40 years ago when his first hits were emerging, and 2) Saxophonist Jean Pierre Zanella; you have to hear these two to believe it.

My favorite cuts are:
- Azimuth.
- Samba de Verao (perhaps the best version of it I've ever heard)
- Terra de Ninguem
- Gente
- Os Grilos
- Batucada Surgiu

So if you are a fan of: Marcos Valle, a Jazz fan, and/or you love Brazilian music in general, this M U S T be in your collection before it becomes out of reach; you'll absolutely LOVE it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Vannelli CD Ever.......2005-04-13

I have been a Gino fan since Crazy Life--bought every album and then upgraded all to CDs--and by FAR this is the BEST CD of his music ever! I cannot stop listening to it. Not only is it the finest quality live recording of any artist I've ever heard, but Gino's voice is phenomenal. I've never heard it stronger or clearer.

"Black and Blue" showcases Gino's fabulous vocal abilities--awesome! "Where Am I Going" is the best version ever--better than the original, by far. Gino plays the guitar on "Crazy Life," "Something Tells Me (FABULOUS version of this!), and plays drums on "People Gotta Move." All of the songs are mega-better than the original recordings. This is a MUST have for your collection and do whatever you can to get it. I have one at home and one in the car. I am stunned at the quality of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any lover of one the giants of the music !.......2004-12-22

Vanelli and his arresting moods , his careful concern for the best acoustic possible , his metculous sellection of musicians and the most inspired repertoire of one of the most prodigious minds of the late seventies and eighties .
This album is ane xcelent recopilation of the best of his artistic career through all those years .
Excellent choice for any generation , any place and any moment .

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Gino fan or novice.......2002-07-27

Probably the best recording and production of a live concert recording I've ever heard. It truly captures the excitement of a Gino concert that only those who have been to one understand. I wish it had been longer and had included some of his older songs but it is still great and a must have for any Gino fan or novice

5 out of 5 stars You can still get a copy of this CD.......2002-07-26

I searched for a copy of this CD for almost two years, until I finally tried going to Gino Vannelli's Website. You can order it directly from there. ... You can also order the Concert Video.

      5 out of 5 stars A must........2001-12-16

Best choice for a complete view of this artist and still a reference point in live recording. His vocal is perfect and the band superb;the choice of the songs is the best of his best.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Live Album.......2006-05-10
