Customer Reviews:
Great Sound.......2007-04-14
Karen Carpenter had a great voice, and here is a big collection of songs from this brother and sister team.To name the best songs from this duo is difficult because there is so many to choose from. But a definite favorite is Top Of The World.I love that tune.
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.
THE BEAUTIFUL KAREN LIVES ON FOR ETERNITY............2007-04-12
To review this cd collection is simple - short and sweet it has all the hits plus some added extras and the remastering is pure perfection. It seems that with every new collection that came out Richard tinkered with the orchestration, vocal intensity and the songs over time lost all their essence of beauty and power that was there when first recorded.
These songs are all great due to the wonderful arrangements by Richard, the excellent song selection but foremost the rare vocal ability that Karen possessed. Her voice was always so pure with open, honest emotion and an ever constant tinge of melancholy/sadness. To change this in any way denies us of the gift that is Karen Carpenter. Her voice is one of the best of all times. Perfection cannot be enhanced as those other collections tried to do.
These songs I can guarantee are the original versions remastered perfectly and it is very emotional to hear that voice come out so clear, so pure - the voice of an angel. These are the original songs in their original form as you remember them.
All Carpenter fans - this cd will be a dream come true. Purchase it and Karen will live on for you forever.

Rainy days and Mondays always made Karen Carpenter blue. Maybe she should have played her two Christmas records, Christmas Portrait and An Old Fashioned Christmas. Both are combined in this 31-piece collection, a great value for fans of this brother-sister duo who captured the pop airwaves during the early to mid-'70s. A number of good performances mark the collection, which includes songs from their Christmas TV special, numerous cuts backed by full orchestra that prove the duo could extend their pop sensibilities to timeless holiday fare, and singular works such as "Little Altar Boy," a song that Richard Carpenter feels was among his sister's greatest performances. --Martin Keller

The sprawling suburbs that sprang up south of Los Angeles during the postwar industrial boom gave white pop two of its most accomplished icons, Brian Wilson's Beach Boys, out of Hawthorne, and Downey's Carpenters. That geography subtly permeates the first disc of this four-CD, 89-track anthology, from the living room demos and indie singles that pushed them to a Hollywood Bowl battle of the bands victory while still teens to their first triumphs for A&M Records, just across town in Hollywood. Assembled, burnished, and annotated with loving care by Richard Carpenter, it's a collection that chronicles an expansive musical vision rooted in prerock pop, yet fueled by the ambitious, neo-baroque arrangement consciousness of the '60s L.A. music scene. Karen Carpenter's warm, inviting alto may have been the band's trademark, but it's Richard's perfect studio frameworks--and a far-ranging taste for material that spans standards, Bacharach's "Close to You," Leon Russell's "Superstar," "A Song for You, " and "This Masquerade"--that made the Carpenters' music considerably more than the sum of its parts. Filled with a wealth of rare outtakes, remixes, radio spots, TV performances (including a duet-medley between Karen and the great Ella Fitzgerald), and commercial spots, Essential is exactly that for a Carpenters fan. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Essential Carpenters, especially early Carpenters.......2007-06-24
If you were to obtain only one Carpenters greatest hits compilation, this would be it. As a Carpenters fan myself, most all of the Carpenters songs are hits, so there are always a few songs missing that you would like to have been included. For a beginning Carpenters fan, however, this is a very good collection. Especially valuable are the early Carpenters collection, disc one of four, 1965-1970. It has some very good recordings of pre-Carpenters songs, and some original recordings of early Carpenters songs, which were later re-recorded for the Carpenters albums. Richard Carpenter's booklet narratives explaining the history of the songs is very informative and entertaining. One interesting thing Mr. Carpenter said was that most of the master tapes recordings of the pre-Carpenters from their early days on the Magic Lamp label with Joe Osborn were destroyed in a fire in 1975. This may explain at least partially why there are so few recordings of early (pre)-Carpenters music available. In any event, I highly recommend this album, most especially for its early Carpenters songs, which you may not be able to find anywhere else.
Essential (and unessential, too).......2007-05-28
The output and legacy of The Carpenters is as easy to overrate as it is to underrate. It's true that they were rather catagorically dismissed as uncool during their heyday, but in the haste many folks make these days to say, "Hey, we really did love 'em, we just couldn't SAY so," there were some pretty good reasons why The Carpenters got dissed back then. Exhibit A is "Sing," a little ditty that can put you into insulin shock upon first contact, and their renditions of "Please Mr. Postman" and "Ticket To Ride" didn't do the Marvelettes or the Beatles any favors either. But there's also a lot of music Richard and Karen Carpenter put out that not only justifies the belated critical acceptance today, it exceeds expectations the casual listener might have that this was just a sappy pop duo and nothing more.
Much of the evidence for this can be found on this collection, where the hits ("Close To You," "For All We Know," "We've Only Just Begun," etc.) comingle with less-heard material, including Richard and Karen's early days as two-thirds of the jazzy Richard Carpenter Trio (a solid rendition of the Duke Ellington standard, "Caravan") and album tracks/singles that deserved more exposure ("Maybe It's You," "Ordinary Fool," "Make Believe It's Your First Time"), and some genuinely inventive and WEIRD stuff as well (a drum roll for "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" and the rock 'n roll medley from the album NOW & THEN). There's also, inevitably, the tracks you skip over immediately when they come on, but two things are predominant throughout. There's Richard Carpenter's arrangements, which, when they work, REALLY soar into pop heaven, not unlike those of fellow Angeleno Brian Wilson. But most of all, there's the lovely voice of Karen Carpenter, as graceful and full a voice as any pop singer could ever want. She was capable of making you fall in love, breaking your heart and putting your emotions in a whirl, sometimes all in the same song. When the two siblings' particular talents click together, as they often do on this retrospective, few things in pop music sound better.
I have a few quibbles with this collection, more with omissions than with what's included. I would have like to have seen "Look To Your Dreams" from VOICE OF THE HEART included; for my money, it showcases the finest singing Karen Carpenter ever did. And the inclusion of "Mr. Guder" and "Your Wonderful Parade" just underscores the fact that songs of social protest were not The Carpenter's strong suit. But balance this out with what's here ("Solitaire," "Those Good Old Dreams," "Goodbye To Love," the list goes on and on) and what you have left is ample proof that there was much depth and breadth to The Carpenters....and that they were pretty cool after all.
Essential Collection: 1965-1997.......2007-03-20
This collection is truly essential for any Carpenters fan. The only thing missing in the wonderful book that accompanies the collection is the lyrics to the songs.
Completely Covered.......2007-02-14
This CD covers all the major hits
and throws in some Holiday music also.
I noticed this CD had Ave Maria on it and I wanted to hear her version.
Also Superstar, A Song for you and some interviews are included here.
I give the brother and sister team 5 stars.
A&M records really had a diverse group of artists signed to its label as a sign of the '70s music itself.
Great songs.......2006-08-22
I bought this CD for my sister because she is a big carpenters fan and she loves it.

The album which was very substantial .......2007-06-15
The album which receives the impression which every music is known well and considered it as going.
The beautiful singing voice of Karen. A beautiful melody and harmony. The arrangement in which Richard excelled.
One of The highest CARPENTERS can hear it in this CD.
Sad really .......2005-04-28
Another one of the 20th Century Masters I can't figure out for the life of me. True, true it does include some of their best 'n' biggest songs such as: Yesterday Once More, Please Mr. Postman, Top of the World and Goodbye to Love. But for the love of god where is: I Won't Last a Day Without You, You and Rainy Days and Mondays? Well, The Carpenters were one of the most succesful bands of the 70's producing over a dosin hit records by the help of Karen Carpenter's outstanding vocal and her brother's talented abilities. So compiling a 12-track "Best of" of The Carpenters seems a little overwhelming and that's partially why it falters so badly. But if you're looking for a Carpenter sampler (or just wanna listen to that golden voice) this is the right place to look, dig in and enjoy the magic of Karen Carpenter's voice.
Standout tracks:
Goodbye to Love, Yesterday Once More and Top of the World.
Well, The Mastering Is Good.......2002-11-04
The idea of Universal's Millennium Collection to highlight various artists catalogs has been going on for a few years now, I thought Richard was going to skip an entry to this series. Um, I was wrong. Instead of looking at this project as a blank canvas, featuring an exclusive remix available only on this collection, or maybe an outtake of some kind, we are treated to another collection of previously remixed singles already available on domestically released collections. It's a good highlight or introduction to the Carpenters body of work but if you're a completist, take comfort in knowing you're not missing a thing.
EXCELLENT COLLECTION FOR THE CARPENTERS COMPLETIST.......2002-10-02
Several of these tracks are newly remastered with new arrangements. Most of the drum patterns are stronger and Richard Carpenter has updated quite a few of his keyboard parts. "Love Is Surrender" is most notably updated. Thank you again Richard for your spectacular work as an arranger, producer, musician and songwriter!
"This Masquerade" is my favorite track on this set. The song is dark and mysterious and the musical arrangement is intense. This song should really be promoted for radio airplay. It's a definite hit!
Yesterday Once More, AGAIN, and AGAIN!.......2002-09-30
Yet another Carpenters compilation. None of these songs are any diiferent than any remastered CD. NOTE: There is a boxed set coming out and it is a RERELASE of "From The Top" with a few bonus tracks.
This CD has nice inserts, but Richard, we know there's more material out there. Stope JUST SELLING IT to Japan.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent compilation.......2003-10-12
During the seventies, the Carpenters had considerable success in the pop charts on both sides of the Atlantic with their brand of pop music. Richard's expert arrangements and Karen's superb voice combined to create something special.
They recorded plenty of original songs but some of their biggest hits were covers. Close to you is a Bacharach-David song, originally recorded by Dionne Warwick, but her version was not released as a single. Please Mr Postman was a huge American success for the Marvelettes (and was covered by the Beatles on one of their early albums). Jambalaya is an old Hank Williams song, while Ticket to ride is a Beatles classic.
Of the original songs, Top of the world was never originally intended to be a single. However, Lynn Anderson covered the song and had a major country hit with it. She might have had a pop hit, too, but the Carpenters wisely decided to release their own version.
The strangest song here is Calling occupants of interplanetary craft. Whether you like it or not, it demonstrates that Richard and Karen were always trying to do something different.
There are so many classics here including For all we know, We've only just begun, Rainy days and Mondays, Goodbye to love, Only yesterday, Yesterday once more and I won't last a day without you. You can't get all the great Carpenters songs on a single CD but the songs here are all excellent. Among the omissions are Hurting each other, Sweet sweet smile and All you get from love is a love song, but if those were included, others would have to be left out.
If you only want a single CD of Carpenters music, this is a good one to choose.
More perfection from The Carpenters.......2001-05-25
While I am inclined personally to compile each individual album by Karen and Richard, this is a good compilation album. It has some songs that aren't on most of their greatest hits CD's. I do, however, think it is better to just get everything they ever made.

A creative and moving interpretation of the original music........1999-07-27
I'm a huge fan of instrumental versions of popular music. Sometimes called "Easy Listening." I have tons of cd's and tapes of this format. I wish it was easier to come by. It's hard stuff to find these days. I own this cd, as well as, several others by Richard Clayderman. I think it's one of the best instrumental interpretations of the original collection. It should'nt be directly compared to the original because it is instrumental! However, this cd molds the original with some Clayderman flair. I'd recommend to anyone who can still find it. This stuff becomes collector's item music fast.
The Carpenters is not the same without Keren Carpenter........1998-08-04
This remake of the Carpenters songs is still beautiful. However, despite Richard's skillful arrangement and piano playing, this album can't still measure up to the old carpenters' album. One thing that definitely is missed from this album is Karen's angelic voice. I don't think that Richard's Piano melody can substitute Keren Carpenter's singing..

Love the CD. It is wonderful to hear the Carpenter's again. Karen's beautiful voice brings tears, but also much enjoyment. I am approximately her age, so it takes me back decades. Thanks for carrying this product. I will enjoy it every Christmas.
