The Last Ride on Self-Destruction Highway.......2007-08-04

Vulgar and unpleasant album from the tiresome Bowie in his alien-comes-down-to-Earth-as-a-rock-star guise. Why he NEEDS alter-ego's at all is a mystery, perhaps it's to fool us into thinking he's more interesting than he actually is, or not blame him when things are wrong. Some hope.
Anyway, TRAFOZSATSFM is a dreary, humourless excursion. Dull as dishwater with a subtle-as-concrete premise; Messianic traveler descends, and is distraught to find our civilization is on it's last legs. We're all to blame, and we're about to take the last ride on self-destruction highway. Fair enough. So what's he gonna do about it?
Well, he's going to play some of the coarsest, stupidest, badly dated songs you can think of, in ludicrous make-up and a clown costume. The planet's saved! Go Ziggy!!
I suppose what really irks me here, is the fact that this is almost reverentially over-praised, with little or no dissention. No sane voice of reason pulling it up, and having a second look. It's accepted-as-fact that it's a work of unencroachable genius, despite the fact it's got no guts or soul, or anything that would make you warm to it. Anything that makes you remember it fondly, mark a time in your life by it.
I can already hear the screams of outrage and disbelief as this `great work' is dismantled (and that's the easy bit, a slight glance past the hyperbole and it falls apart), but I kid you not. This is some of the most clapped out, weary music that exists in the world, and in that sense, it's no wonder Bowie needs to hide behind a `persona' to present it.
Despite all the bombast and show, Ziggy's not that interesting (either!), it's as if someone's decided to construct him loosely, in the shadow of Bowie's own psyche, of a perception. And he's delighted to go along with it, myth establishing and ego massaging as he goes. Cue that false, aloof, but-not-so-aloof-that-you-don't-buy-my-records, grin.
Concepts like this should be done with a flourish, with a smile, with a lightness of touch. Laugh-a-minute-Dave uses a mallet.
He should prefix the closing (excruciating!) `Rock n Roll Suicide' with a Mike Yarwood style "and this is me", just to reassure us, let us know it is just a lark, a druggie blast, and not to take it too seriously.
No chance. Deadly Duke Dave plays this severe grey charade to a grim death, and that's why the album dies one.

Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am.......2007-07-07

Now I do like this. But it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Too many so-so songs ("Star"; "Hang Onto Yourself"; "Five Years"); too much campy over-orchestration ("Rock and Roll Suicide"), one total bomb ("It Ain't Easy") - he even recycles the "Sweet Jane" riff on "Starman", which is otherwise very good. Still, it's Ziggy Stardust, man! You know? It's not like there aren't all kinds of excellent songs on this album, because there are a truckload! You know "Moonage Daydream", right? What a guitar solo! And you know "Ziggy Stardust", I assume! The lyrics! The riff! And, again, the guitar solo! "Starman" is pretty good too, though I think Bowie could've written his own riff rather than take one of Lou Reed's. Been spending too much time around Jimmy Page, have you? Continuing on, "Suffragette City" may not be terribly insightful, but it's a Stonesy rocker with a powerful horn section, so I like it. Another two songs I like that you don't often hear too much of are the cathartic "Soul Love" and the groupie-themed rocker "Lady Stardust". Oh yeah, and then there's the concept. The bisexual androgynous alien coming down from space to save everybody's life. It's a bit clunky, but like Tommy I find Ziggy Stardust is more about the music than the concept. And the music's good!

Awesome Bowie.......2007-06-28

This album is still my favorite dating back to 1972.
Bowie was the genius of the 70's.
All serious Bowie fans should add this cd to their collection, this is Bowie at his best,each song could easily be a number 1 hit even today!

Ziggy will captivate you!.......2007-06-25

I love David Bowie and could listen to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" over-and-over. The poetics of Bowie's lyrics and the phenomenal guitar riffs hold this album together and are what makes it a classic, must have album. This is Bowie at his height of fame and truly captures Bowie's glam rock side of the late 1970s. I could not choose a favorite song from this album because, to me, each song builds off of one another like a good concept album should. From the opening of "Five Years" right to the end "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" shows the various levels of Bowie's artistic ability.
This is a must have for any serious collection of Bowie and for anyone interested in good, wholesome rock showcasing one of the best artists of the 1970s.

Rise Against returns with a rollicking wallop of an album that further establishes the Chicago-based outfit as one of the great bright hopes for the future of alienation rock. Cut from the same savvy cloth as Bad Religion and Black Flag, Rise Against rocks hard during the martial opus opener, "Chamber The Cartridge," the melodic "Injection," which asks us to imagine that Iron Maiden came from sunny California and not some dreary part of London, and "Ready To Fall," which may be one of the greatest anthems of adolescent estrangement since The Who's "Baba O'Riley." The band also isn't afraid of a good hook and scintillating melody ("Under The Knife"), exploring complex emotions ("Roadside"), or unleashing a bit of old-school breakneck fury sans apology ("Brick"). All of these things demonstrate that Rise Against is drawing from a broader palette than many of its counterparts, one of the reasons it will (indeed, already has) rise above the masses of sound-alike acts vying for the attention of the MySpace generation.-Jedd Beaudoin

Rise Against does it again.......2007-06-18

I'm going to write a lot so skip this if you hate reading, but I'd advise not. Read it and get a good opinion on an even better band.

Before last year I'd never really heard of Rise Against. One of my guy friends would always sing the screaming parts of Ready to Fall, and I loved it, but I never knew who sung it. During one of my long searches for interesting music on here I came across this cd. I sampled Ready to Fall and right away I knew the song. I bought it just because of that. And I love it. since then I've gotten more of Rise Against's cd's and I still don't understand why they aren't more famous. Their music, if you could say that punk could be, is beautiful. it's really attention grabbing and addictive.

The songs are different than past albums, but they are more matture in some way, still political, but it's more hidden in the songs, it's not as direct as in Siren Song of the Counter Culture.

I'm not gunna rate the songs because that would be my opinion. I'm reviewing the songs as if I don't care about the music and I'm just here to review it.(though I really love it and I'm trying really hard to give you an honest opinion, but hey don't kill me if I make them sound a little better than they really are)

1.CHAMBER IN THE CARTRIDGE-This song is a great opener for the album. The beginning is really different **This is noise**...and then the guitar starts. It adds a really interesting effect and makes you somewhat interested. The beginning guitar kind of drags on a bit, but the lyrics finally start. Throughout the rest of the song the lyrics are pretty much the chorus and a few verses, but nothing too out of the ordinary. There's the hidden political view in this song if you listen.

2.INJECTION-The guitar in the beginning catches your attention and the lyrics are really well written. Because almost everyone can relate to something he sings throughout the entire song. It's a **oh, i know what thats like** sort of feeling throughout the song. The lyrics stand out more than the guitar in most of this song. They don't overpower it, but you focus more on his voice.

3.READY TO FALL-The albums first single. It's a catchy song. The lyrics are really simple, but in a good way. Not too simple but well though out. The guitar blends in with the singing during the chorus which makes his voice stand out. Nothing is really special about the song(like an awesome solo or insane guitars or drumming), but the way Rise Against put the music and the lyrics together make this song really stand out. It's addicting to listen to because it's repetitive in a good way.

4.BRICKS-For only 1:30 long this song is a standout one. From the beginning the guitars and drums are fast. A pure straight up punk fast song that makes you want to get up and start a fire and riot during the song. The lyrics too, and on to it's pure punk feeling, adding its politicalness slightly, and it would go unnoticed if not listened to and accepted.

5.UNDER THE KNIFE-From the start of the song you know it's going to be a good one. The opening riff is catchy. The chorus(guitar part) has part of the intro in it which keeps the song alive (though the lyrics could by themselves). Again the guitar stands out with pounding drums and a thrundering bass to go along with it.

6.PRAYER OF THE REFUGEE-The beginnig with the guitar and bass is captivating. it catches your attention, because this song doesn't start out as heavy as the others. It gradually builds up to it with a scream along worthy chorus. Throughout the rest of the song after the chorus the music starts to keep its usual punky heaviness and about 3/4 of the way through slow down to the beginning riff and immedietly go into the loud chorus.

7.DRONES-Picks up from the ending of Prayer of the Refugee and kicks up from there. With a raging bass and drum beginning and a screaming guitar slide whats not to like about it? The lyrics are very catchy and you know you can relate to them when you have those "days" and want someone there for you. The guitar, bass and drums continute to rage with the beginning heaviness for the rest of the song. Again the hinting politicalness in the song(I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It's great that they can express politics through music. Its a talent and I love it.).

8.THE APPROACHING CURVE-They tell a story, which is a great addition to the album, and they don't do a bad job either. This song is captivating you get sucked into it. The girls vocals in the background(very quietly) was different, but a great addition to the song. It makes it more addicting and true if you relate. The guitars, bass and drums make a melody that go along with the song perfectly making the song something you could really lose yourself in and just focus on the song.

9.WORTH DYING FOR-The drums immediatly start in the beginning which makes a great entrance to a good song. The lyrics are very well written and go great with the album and everything going on in the world right now. The guitar througout is fast, like the drums and bass and make the song worth listening to because they add fastness and an addicting touch(though the lyrics help out so much). Speaking of the lyrics, they make the song so much better and add emotion to it.

10.BEHIND CLOSED DOORS-The singing and guitar make a perfect beginning for this song. You can relate to the lyrics and you could defniitally see a solider sing this song during war **we will survive**...The guitar and drums, bass too throughout the rest of the song is exceptional and keeps you hanging, like the lyrics. With pauses at the end of lines during some of the verse parts it adds a great effect of suspense. All in all this song is a good one and fits this album like the plastic cover the cd comes in.

11.ROADSIDE-I guess you could call this the Swing Life Away of The Sufferer And the Wittness. Somewhat slower and acoustic than all of the other songs. Here the girl singing is much louder than the occasional whisper in The Approaching Curve. It's a great addition to the song seeing that it's already different. So many people know what he feels while singing in the song. The guitar is the thing that really stands out over the drums(if hardly any) and bass(if it plays a little), but the lyrics overpower all of that with emotion.

12.THE GOOD LEFT UNDONE-The Guitar in the beginning again catches your attention. The vocals with the flower are different from any other song on this album which makes it unique. The vocals in gemeral are very good, the lyrics, well written and catchy, while the guitar and bass play on in harmony making an awesome rythm to the song as the drums play a great beat you practially want to air drum out. Then the ending, you think the song has changed, but it hasn't ans ends completly differently which keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for that last song.

13.SURVIVE-The guitar immediatly starts out heavy with matching drums. Perfect. A heavy punk song at the end of the album to add the finishing touches. The vocals you want to sing along with they're so catchy while the guitar and drums pour out their hearts giving it their best to be awesome. They got it. With the vocals, the well written lyrics, and and greatly put together music, Survive is the perfect ending track to an already well put together album.

THATS IT!! If you're an old Rise Against fan you'll definately appriciate their new album, though different. If you're a new fan you'll love the new and enjoy the old as well. All in all, buy this album, you won't be disapointed with it if you're a punk-hardcoreish fan.

Rise Against is a band to want to jump up and down and just straight up rock out to.

an excellent post-punk album.......2007-06-13

You know, I absolutely can't stand punk music. To me, it's the most unoriginal genre of music ever- each and every punk band sounds exactly the same to me. Which is why it surprises me to no end that I really like Rise Against. The Sufferer and the Witness was my first foray into Rise Against's world and I must say I'm interested in finding out more about their other works.

To me, all the songs are very good, but there are only a few truly standout tracks: their first single from TSatW, Ready to Fall, Drones, Chamber the Cartridge, and my personal favorite from the album- Roadside.

All I have to say is that if more bands sounded like Rise Against, I might not have such a vendetta against the genre. Enjoy- I sure did.

This is quite simply a refreshing album. For me anyways it is. I had heard of Rise Against before but never really gave them a chance or second notice. But my friend played a long drive a few weeks ago and what I heard made me want to hear more, much more. I'm glad I decided to do so as this is all that I've been listening to since. Upon listening to the album its readily apparent that Rise Against has loads of talent. Another thing this album does right is grab you by your upper ear loab and not let go untill its ripped off and bleeding. Like previous albums, "The Sufferer & the Witness" is relentless from start to finish, but its utterly addictive during the whole thing. There really isn't a weak track on the whole album, but certain tracks are certainly stronger than others.

I personally have found this album to be a breath of fresh air, and this really is not even my style of music. It has a unique feel to it, a big part of that being the vocals, which I find to be quite good. The only complaint I could have against this album is that it does tend to sound all the same. But on the other hand, if you like what that sounds like, its all good. You just don't have any slower songs to really break up the pace of the album.

Great album, give it a chance, I dare you not to get addicted to it. The only question I have is will it stand the test of time and be a "classic" album years from now. Only time and perhaps only you can tell. Will you?

Where do Meat Puppets go when they die? They don't go to heaven where the angels fly, but rather take 11 years for a resurrection, then regroup and pick up where they left off. Granted, this reunion of the twisted, high-desert trio is devoid of original drummer Derrick Bostrom, yet it does include what Kurt Cobain once referred to as "the Brothers Meat": Curt and Cris Kirkwood and their hippified fusion of punk, country, metal, and psychedelia. In time-warp fashion, the band plays as distinctively and playfully as ever, with songs like "Spit," "Island," "Disappear," and "Enemy Love Song"--and the Kirkwoods' still-unique vocal accord--drifting back to Up on the Sun, vintage 1985. Having had a few days to digest the first proper release by Meat Puppets in twelve years, I feel I have reached a verdict. First off, let me state up front that I hold this band in extemely high regard. To me, they are legends who have had a profound impact on my musical sensibilites. I enjoy all of their albums, with my favorites being Up on the Sun, Meat Puppets II, and Forbidden Places. Prior to the release of Rise to Your Knees, I read several reviews which invariably compared this release to their SST catalog and essentially all reviews reached the conclusion that it didn't hold a candle to those albums. One American socio-political publication which masquarades as a music magazine went so far as to give it only one-and-a-half stars out of a possible five. However, I came across an interview with Curt Kirkwood in which he expressed his love and enthusiasm for Rise to Your Knees. Now being a huge Puppets fan whose word am I to take? Obviously, Curt's and boy am I glad I did because this album rocks. In true Puppets fashion it is inventive, imaginative, and endlessly creative. All of the familiar elements are present- cosmic guitar riffs, trippy sonics, and surreal lyrical imagery. There is a reflective theme throughout, perhaps attributable to aging and/or Cris' struggle with substance abuse. By the way, we're all rooting for you Cris, you rock so hard! Anyhow, if I had to compare it to other Puppets records I would say it most closely resembles Too High to Die and No Joke. Songs run the gamut from traditional Puppets rockers (New Leaf, Disappear, Radio Moth), to poppier fare (Enemy Love Song, Island) to ghostly space rock (The Ship, Fly Like the Wind). Many songs find a groove and ride it into the ground in a way reminiscent of the 1986 song Out My Way. All in all the brothers Kirkwood and new drummer Ted Marcus have created another unique masterpiece in classic Meat Puppets fashion that will provide years of listening enjoyment for those dedicated to this wonderful band. I leave tomorrow to see them play in South Carolina. Can't wait...

Worth the wait.......2007-07-18

"Rise to your knees" was well worth the wait. There isn't a song on this album to skip. From the first song to the last, this album is complete gold. The Kirkwoods are still at their best, and new drummer Ted Marcus fits perfectly as a puppet. Buy this album now, you won't regret it. I would go as far as to name it "Best album of 2007".

great Puppets reunion.......2007-07-17

It's great to hear the reunited Kiekwood brothers. Personally, I liked the last incarnation of the Puppets on Golden Lies. And Curt's other ventures, Eyes Adrift, Volcano and his solo cd, were all very good. But the new album, Rise To Your Knees takes the band to a new level. The current Puppets are a little more serious and laid back. Songs like Spit, Stone Eyes, and The Ship are simply beautiful. Upbeat songs like Radio Moth and New Leaf are welcome additions, however a different version of New Leaf recorded by the previous members from Golden Lies was previously released on the Meat Puppets complilation a few years ago. I would like to have heard Chris' bass and vocals a little more, but this album is definately well worth buying.

There are prodigies and there is progeny. Anoushka Shankar is both. As the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, she's got bloodlines and a teacher who is one of the greatest to ever play sitar. While Anoushka has pretty good classical chops (not the best, but pretty good), Rise shows her versatility and growth as a composer, arranger, and producer. The nine-song album features her sitar along with a variety of traditional Indian and modern Western instruments. She orders the ragas logically, starting with morning and working toward the final one at the end of the night, each one capturing the mood of its particular time of day. For example, mellow opener "Prayer in Passing" would be the initial waking moments, while the mood soon gets more upbeat on "Red Sun" before the midday heat sets in for the middle tracks and brings down the tempo. Traditionalists will call it pop, but there is nothing light or disposable about Rise. --Tad Hendrickson

For the fans of this type of music, she is an absolutely delight. For the neophytes like me, this is a great introduction to the culture and music of India. Her ability to play this intricate instrument is incredible, she makes it sound so easy. A couple of songs are her father's but with a new twist and emotion. It is certainly a great CD.

Saw her live and then bought this....I can play it all day.......2007-01-03

She is a genius and she's assembled world musicians that when combined, stretch out to a very modern sound (so not like her Dad what-so-ever.) Way lovely, mix of world music-flamenco-scat-jazz. I play it a long time, put it away and come back to it. I saw her live in Grant park in Chicago in August and watched little children all over the lawn spontaneously stand up and start to dance. I'll never forget it.

After a meteoric rise to fame as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, one of the most successful groups of the '60s, Herb Alpert focused on running A&M Record's, the indie powerhouse he had founded with partner Jerry Moss. His second artistic journey began with the release of "Rise," a sultry dance instrumental, in 1979. It became the biggest hit of his career, winning a Grammy and climbing to number one on the Billboard chart, making him the only recording artist to have a number one record as a vocalist and as an instrumentalist. Herb Albert 'Rise' At Last!.......2007-06-14

I was hoping when the original CD of this album went out of print a remaster would follow soon and it did.This album supervised by Mr.Albert himself contains not only a fat liner booklet but a remastering sound so vivid it will simply blow you away!As for the music itself,being that 'Rise' is Herb's big comeback he did everything in his power to beef up his sound and make it contemporary;what that really means is Herb Albert brings in members of the Crusaders for a huge sound that embraces modern pop,jazz-funk and a lot of disco.The open fanfare of "1980" does showcase one fact;Albert has not elected to alter his trumpet style one bit despite the extremely produced music.And then we're onto the title song everybody knows-again given new life here by the GREAT sound!"Behind The Rain" finds him in full on 4/4 disco beat mode,complete with all the big strings that usually come with it.The real fine for funk fans on this album though has GOT to be "Rotation"-now this is almost as pure a "rare groove" as you can get,with little more then a brooding funk bass synth pulse backing up Albert's dramatic trumpet solo-next to the title song it's probably one of the finest tunes on the album.Along with a couple more returns into the disco relm,including one with a lite reggae influence the catchy "Love Is",the only vocal tune on the album appears and the album ends with a funky cover of The Crusaders "Street Life".Herb Albert proceeded to smooth out his sound on his releases after this recording but 'Rise' is a pivitol moment in his career.And well worth investigating.

Finally, the Herb Alpert Signature Series continues. We didn't get CDs of TIJUANA BRASS VOLUME 2, WARM, or THE BRASS ARE COMIN' but they have been made available in digitally remastered form on Apple iTunes. Not counting compilations, the next 6 albums chronologically would be SUMMERTIME, YOU SMILE-THE SONG BEGINS, CONEY ISLAND, JUST YOU & ME, HERB ALPERT/HUGH MASEKELA, and THE MAIN EVENT/LIVE, all origially issued from 1970 to 1978. Instead, they've skipped ahead to 1979 and Herb's big comeback hit, RISE.
This CD is another high quality reissue in the Signature Series. As far as improved sound over the previous CD issue, there is no comparison. "Rise" and "Rotation" even sound remarkably better than they did on DEFINITIVE HITS which wasn't mastered all that many years ago. The drums and fanfare on "1980" come barrelling out of the speakers to let you know up front that there are some serious sonic improvements on this new edition of the album. On "Rise" the voices from the first bass break are much more audible, on "Rotation" the opening percussion has an echo that I've never been able to distinguish before. It gives the intro to the song a bounce that only improves upon what was already my favorite track on the album. Louis Johnson's bass on "Love Is" is much more pronounced -- it really restores the snap to Johnson's slap and the whole track sounds much fresher. There's too many things going on in "Aranjuez" to discuss, but they all sound better now due to a first rate remastering job. As the crazy-mad-one-star-reviewer pointed out earlier, Alpert did resequence the album, swapping "Street Life" with "Aranjuez". This keeps the orginal "Aranjuez" track from being too close to the bonus track remix though, and personally, I think the order of the songs works just fine. The new version of "Aranjuez" is listed as a 2007 dance mix but there really isn't a whole lot that's been changed on the track and I have to agree with Crazy-mad-one-star-reviewer once again when he says that the track doesn't seem all that modern dance-wise. But there are some noticeable differences -- the Spanish guitar intro has been cut and the drums have been remixed to the point where it doesn't scream "Disco!" as much as the '79 original. It's a good mix and I think I may like it as much, maybe even a little more, than the original version. The other bonus track is a new version of "Rotation". I originally thought they had included a '79/'80 era dance version of the song but this version sounds like it would be right at home on the WHIPPED CREAM RE-WHIPPED album along with "Lemon Tree" and "Ladyfingers". At any rate, it's a great version and I think fans of the original will like it.
I always thought RISE was a great album and really deserved all of its success. With this reissue, I think it's become an even better album.

Herb's Comeback Classic!!.......2007-06-02

It's great to see Herb's masterpiece get the remastered treatment is so richly deserves. "Rise" is one of the greatest instrumental singles of all time. It is as refreshing to hear on the radio now as it was back when it hit #1 on the pop charts in October of 1979. The entire album holds up surprisingly well. And the other review posted at amazon trashing it is clearly written by a non-music lover with little awareness of what truely sexy music is...Rise is so contagious, so infectious, and so groovy that it is literally impossible not to shake your booty while listening. This is dance/jazz music for grown ups who know great hooks and catchy melodies when they hear them. The two bonus mixes are rather dated and don't really hold up well next to the current dance scene. But DJs with any talent or imagination can recognize that the original tracks are full of great funky grooves that are still relavent nearly 30 years later. Now we just need to see more post-Rise albums get remastered...please!

Album Description

Rise Against are a political punk band from Chicago who recorded Siren Song of the Counter-Culture with Rage Against the Machine producer GGGarth and Rage and Nirvana mixer Andy Wallace. The four band members came together from punk bands 88 Fingers Louie, Pinhead Circus, and the Enemy, and the emo band Baxter, and play old school punk (e.g., Descendants) with a strong political point of view.

Siren Song of the Counter-Culture has drawn rave reviews from key publications. Rolling Stone praised the band's "rousing, intelligent fury," while Alternative Press said "the band's engrossing hardcore is an urgent siren song that's appropriate for these angst-ridden, uncertain times."

This album is very high on my all-time favorites list. Where to start? It is sooo good that I truly believe people are idiots or lying or both if they say they don't like this. Energy, melody and power. Rise Against can do it all. They sing about important things too. How can you not love this band?? Not a single average song...all are great. I listen to a lot of music and these guys are still one of my faves.

i really enjoy this cd. its been a while since i bought a new punk cd. it enjoys some of melody elements of afi. it has less of the recent clean punk sound that can be heard on mtv. this still has some good aggressive singing with good points calm....

Very good album.......2007-05-10

This is a really good CD to get if you are into the whole pop-emo thing. I wouldn't label this as punk (like Sex Pistols or Misfits) because it's more melodic. It's more along the lines of New Found Glory or maybe Pennywise or Bad Religion. It's probably realitively easy to find an mp3 for "Life Less Frightening", which is in my opinion the best song off the CD. If you like the aforementioned bands, then definitely get this, as you won't be disappointed.

I'm previewing cds from the library before purchasing for my new grandson. I listened to this today, and it's a keeper!

I loved Walk, Walk, Walk - a song about walking to school. The Numbers Rhumba would be a fun song to sing and dance along with your child. All of the songs were easy for adults to listen to, and fun to sing along with. The lyrics are exceptionally sensory - Something in my Shoe, for example. And the words are simple and visual. I highly recommend this cd.

I listened to this album today in math class at school. My teacher was trying to introduce my classmates to Raffi, and she succeeded.
One thing I did not like about this album is that it has "Wheels on the Bus" on it which causes anxiety. I feel uncomfortable when I listen to that song, so I do not reccomend this album to anybody.

Rise and Shine.......2004-08-04

My boys are 14 and 18 and they were reminiscing about all of the Raffi tapes we had; Rise and Shine, Everything Grows, Singable Songs for the Very Young, More Singable Songs for the Very Young...and all of the others. For years, Raffi was the only music that played in our car. Today, the boys still remember the words to to songs...what a nice memory. We still have the tapes and I hope to share them with my grandchildren some day. I have to say that Raffi is one of their best childhood memories.

The past couple of years have been, er, super-busy for composer John Ottman: He wrote super-heroic scores for movies such as Superman Returns, X2: X-Men United and two Fantastic Four installments, including this one. Being a sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer reintroduces some themes from its predecessor (as on "Botched Heroics"). The main new development, of course, is associated with the titular hero, and it starts off the CD. Appropriately, considering Silver Surfer's conflicted nature, a moody undercurrent courses through the track, even when it finally gets to soar. New villain Galactus is a big ol' cosmic cloud of evil; appropriately again, his theme ("Galactus Destroys/Opening") is distinguished by a certain synthetic, low-end fuzziness. Overall, the CD is relatively low key for a big summer action movie. The suspense/action cues don't pummel your eardrums; a track like "Sibling Switch" brings to mind the classicism of Bernard Herrman circa Psycho, while the use of the choir of "Four in One" isn't that different from what you could hear in 1960s sword-and-sandals epics. This relative restraint may frustrate those who enjoy contemporary bombast, but it will be a pleasant surprise for fans of a more restrained approach. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

-The album opens magnificently with an almost 5 minute suite dedicated to fleshing out the fantastic Silver Surfer theme which is nothing short of orgasmic. The theme is by far the best thing the album has to offer and it's a shame that no other thing on the album quite lives up to the fantastic theme. Since the Surfer is from outer space Ottman employs some very nice synths to give it an other worldly feel and he pulls it off quite nicely.

-The album does have a lot of skittering action writing which I'm not really a huge fan of. Elfman and Powell can pull that kind of stuff of well but here it just sounds so generic. "Chasing the Surfer" and "Pursuing Doom" are great examples of that kind of writing, but luckily the whole album is jam packed with that and does have a lot of nice melodic writing that provides some great musical moments.

-Tracks like "Someone I Once Knew" are a delight to listen to and once again shows Ottman using the weird little synths very nicely. I love how he blends the synths with this mysterious choir around the 45 sec. mark on that track. Makes it sound so mysterious and creepy. I haven't seen the movie yet but hopefully that great cue won't be ruined by loud sound effects or dialog. We get to see Ottman's romantic side with beautiful cues like "Wedding Day Jitters" and "Gunshot Wedding". Wish we could have gotten more stuff like that but the small ones we get here are nice enough. "Silver Savior/Aftermath" contains some great action and moments where the Surfer theme gets to shine. I'm guessing it accompanies the big, loud CGI battle that we should except at the end of the movie.

-The album finally closes with "Norrin Radd" which contains a choral rendition of the Surfer theme. Really wish it were longer and wish Ottman had done more grand choral writing like that because that was a treat to listen to and easily my favorite track on the album.

-I was never a huge fan of the first FF score and this one isn't perfect either but it is a huge improvement over the first one. It's no match for Ottma's stronger outings like "X2" or "House of Wax" but I still really did enjoy this an awful lot.

It's amazing how well Rise Against can express their opinions on so many issues, yet remain such a great punk band. This album is another great example of how punk bands can be equally as creative as their '70s counterparts, except with a hardcore appeal for the younger generation.

This CD is not known for but it is so insane when you start listening to it. I just bought it not knowning any of the songs unlike the other CDS, and i am already hooked to it. Get the unravelling by Rise Against and remember to pump this CD in your car as loud as you can on the way home from somewhere. Stop reading this review and go buy it now. 15.99 at SUNRISE RECORDS!

"Live for Something Outside of Your Own Mind".......2005-12-21

These guys rock. Finally there's a band that is easy to find out about that is actually good. Tim's lyrics are great, they're not your average "boo-hoo she broke my heart, now I'm gonna kill her" lyrics that these so-called emo bands write about. They actually mean something, they're political, but even your average "angst filled adolescent" can enjoy them because at times they mention girls in a political sense.

The music is great. Brandon is great on the drums, Joe is great on the bass, and Dan(their first guitarist) is a great punk guitarist(thought Tim plays guitar as well on some songs) Be warned the music isn't your Fall Out Boy pop crap, its real punk music, even sorta hardcore punk, so you may not like them, but if you don't its because you're into lame music, and barely enjoyed there newest album Siren Song of the Counter Culture which is alot more mainstream sounding.

Well that pretty much sums up my review, I could rate each song, but everyone's gonna have their own fave, so well just buy the album you won't regret it unles you are doomed and have horrible music tastes.

Melodic punkers Rise Against have come a long way in a short time. In only five years they have released three albums, their latest for major label Geffen. In the wake of their commercial success the band went back and remastered their first full-length, The Unraveling. Originally released in 2000, this is the Chicago four-piece at their hardest. With breakneck drum beats, shredding guitars and a penchant for singing-into-screeching vocals, it's no wonder that Rise Against's fanbase is as diverse as it is. With a foundation of punk and elements of metal, hardcore and the occasional touch of emo, there is no doubt that this band has a little something to offer everyone. That is, as long as the person wants to rock.

RPM is classic Rise Against..........2007-02-25

In newer albums, Rise Against has been a bit softer, and some have criticized them for it. If you're a fan of the softer tracks on "Siren Song" or "The Sufferer", this album *may* not be for you. It's unabashedly hard and heavy, with a little bit of angst. That being said, it's quite good, if you like that kind of music. It's a fantastic album, for the right listener.

Some albums are amazing for a month and then you play them once every week or two after that, at best. RPM was one of those albums where the harshness is surprising, but it grows on you.

WARNING: Highly Addictive.......2007-01-21

Rise Against has risen(no pun intended) to be one of the best mainstream bands out there. Tim McIlrath has probably the best vocals in a punk band I've seen since Glenn Danzig. And the musicians are highly talented. They may be punk, but that doesn't mean that they have no talent at their instruments.

Anyway, about this album. It didn't quite captivate me at first. Probably because I've grown to love Siren Song so much and this was way different. Well, as time flew by, I became addicted to it. I really started to know that this IS Rise Against. Don't get me wrong, Siren Song is a great album that also gets 5 stars, but it's a completely different sound and besides Tim's voice it almost sounds like a different band (they came back to the true Rise Against sound with Sufferer and the Witness).

5/5 Holy frikin poop! Heaven knows that this is a great song (pun intended). It's the one that got me hooked. To this day, it has stayed as one of my favorite Rise Against songs. From it's fast hardcore intro, to its slow emotional outro, it's a must listen.
3.Dead Ringer
3.5/5 Ehh, I'm a bit iffy on this one.
4.Halfway There
4.5/5 This is a good one. It's probably the darkest song on the album.
5.Like the Angel
4/5 This one's pretty alright by me. A bit overrated if you ask me. It's not like much of anything else on the album. It's always better hearing this on THUG than it is on the CD for some reason.

5/5 .....I'm completely stunned, this song is so great. This may be the best song on the album. Not sure, I'll have to do a bit of consideration.

Rise Against's best album is either this or Sufferer. I'll have to do some choosing and consideration first though.

The Only Rise Against You'll Need.......2006-07-28

Revolutions Per Minute is probably the only great Rise Against album. I don't have their new album or the one that came out before it, but the band seems to keep making music that sounds exactly the same on each album. The reason this album is their best is because their musical formula works very well on this album. The opening track, "Black Masks And Gasoline" is pretty good and gives the listener an idea of the kind of emotion and lyrics that will fill the rest of the album. Other stand out tracks are Broken English, Voices Off Camera, and To The Core. To The Core is a really short but very violent piece of music; Voices Off Camera is a catchy track, and Broken English is one of Rise Against's best songs. If you like this album, you'll like their other albums, but this one is all you need. Their other albums contain music that sounds just like this, just not as good in terms of lyrics and instrumentation. I think that after this album, Rise Against went down the path to mediocrity.

This is my second favourite CD of all time behind FFAF and also my second favourite band. THis CD is so killer and every track on this thing is amazing and a masterpiece on it's own. Like the angel and black masks and gasoline are my two favourite songs of this but every song is good. If you are a fan of cool punk of the street, pick this up and put wind breaker on, prepare to be blown away.
