Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a great performance of the 7th sonata.......2006-04-08

Despite producing some truly great performances of other sonatas, pianists routinely butcher the 7th. I won't name names. Glemser, though, has the technical skill and musical sensibility necessary to play the piece well, a piece that probably it up near the top of the "most difficult piano sonatas" list. Horowitz didn't play it. Neither did Sofronitsky.

The fantasy in B minor is prettier than Hamelin's, too. The first movement of the 2nd sonata is played superbly. The sound quality of the recording is top-notch. My choices for the 5th sonata are Robert Taub and Vladimir Horowitz with Hamelin as runner-up. For the 6th, I love Richter's but hate the sound quality, and Taub's has more character than Glemser's. The 9th is owned by Sofronitsky and Horowitz, but Glemser does a fine job.

This is in my top 5 "best Scriabin CDs" list.

5 out of 5 stars Virtuouso Performance.......2006-02-27

I've listened to many recordings of Scriabin music and this one ranks up there with the best. Glemser's interpretations are lyrical, technically excellent and exciting. His playing of Sonatas #2 and #5 especially are unforgettable. Add to this the superior sound of the piano (is it a Steinway?), audio engineering and price, this is a must-buy for all Scriabin lovers.

4 out of 5 stars No mud, plenty of feeling, but...a few quibbles.......2004-04-18

I do like Bernd Glemser's interpretation of these wonderful sonatas by Russian composer Scriabin. Scriabin is more impressionistic, melodic but also improvisational, and it takes a clear mind to convey what often sounds like broken thought, incomplete sentences in a real musical conversation with oneself. Glemser shows his clarity of thought almost throughout.

Glemser should be lauded for recording the rarely-played and simply GORGEOUS Fantasie, included on this CD. So it's with a heavy heart that I have to quibble with parts of his interpretation. In the hunt for clarity in this massive work that can sometimes get lost in towering sonorities and twisting passages of broken rhythm, Glemser takes a sudden tack into the staccato in the middle of the Fantasie, almost, it seems, getting lost amongst the notes and trying to climb out of a morass. It was rather jarring. Even though he soars at the Fortissimo return of the major theme near the end, it's not enough to sway me to his way of interpretation. Otherwise, an estimable CD and certainly a worthy interpretation of the works of this difficult but splendid music.

5 out of 5 stars I am limited to 5 stars.......2004-04-17

If you love Scriabin, get this recording (and also No 2 with the balance of the sonatas). Glemser has it all: absolute control (his balance between right and left hands is astounding), musicianship of the highest order and technique to match (actually to throw away) but which he does not abuse. He uses exactly what is needed to project this wonderful music in all its magic and mysterious beauty. He understands this music like no other.. This is very difficult music to play easily muddled by a lesser pianist (never mind hitting the notes), but you will no detect any straining in the playing. Forget Sofronitski. Ruth Laredo at her peak might have given competition. The sound is rich and detailed and cannot be faulted. The CD notes do not give credit to the superb instrument, which sounds like a Hamburg Steinway.

5 out of 5 stars Another Naxos bargain.......2001-10-17

I agree with the previous reviewer, these are great performances of great pieces, for a laughable price. All the earlier works, Sonata no. 2, no. 5 (his most frequently recorded), plus the Fantasy in B, display Scriabin's usual refined brilliance, and some Chopin influences in the Fantasy's case. The Sonata 2 must surely be as close to a perfect romatic sonata as any composer has come, with the moonlight in the first movement and the turbulent sea in the second. Sonata 5 evokes some of the same moods as the 2nd with further integration of Scriabin's unique harmonic language. As for the later sonatas, 6, 7, and 9, they seem well written but are a little too heavily steeped in Scriabin's "mystic chord" harmonies for my preference, they may be an acquired taste. However, they are still worth listening to, with the almost jazz-like qualities of the 7th. At any rate, the performances are all very good. You can escape to another world with this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Top Quality Set.......2006-03-25

This set is fascinating. Interpretation and approach by Shukow (Zhukov) well represents the dark, mystical aspect of Scriabin with great sensitivity.

He never rushes or tries to show off mere virtuosity (though he is a good technician). Instead, Shukow reveals his intention on a solid structural base.

The sound quality is also fine. Recommended set for all of Sonatas.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Classy piano.......2004-05-11

This is piano music of the highest order - catchy tunes and flawless performance. I couldn't buy this CD from Amazon so I bought it directly from Shellwood.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tunes, excellent performance.......2003-10-10

Billy Mayerl, Lothar Perl and Carroll Gibbons are not exactly household names, and they probably never will be. Mayerl wrote over 500 tunes and was the director of the light music division of the BBC. Perl, among other accomplishments, was the music director of the Ernie Kovacs show and was occasionally on camera. Gibbons was an American pianist/composer/bandleader who achieved fame in England.

This music is melodic, varied and highly catchy. My favorite pieces are "Hollywood Stars," "Grasshopper Dance" and "A Garden in the Rain." Hassan's performances are, as always, top notch and right in character with the era. Incidentally, I bought my CD directly from the Shellwood Productions website.

5 out of 5 stars The best interpretations of Mayerl yet.......2003-05-19

Billy Mayerl was an extraordinarily gifted and prolific composer in the "novelty/syncopated/rhythm" piano style. Alex Hassan plays this music with consumate grace. Thanks are due to Shellwood Productions for producing such a high quality CD; check their website for more offerings from Hassan.

        5 out of 5 stars Super syncopation.......2003-05-14

I don't know why this CD is only listed in the classical section: it should also be listed in the popular music section. The music of Billy Mayerl and Lothar Perl has never been played so well, not even by the composers themselves! Bravo, Mr. Hassan!

5 out of 5 stars Watch Jussi Grow!.......2001-08-14

To be perfectly honest, it pains me to listen to precocious little children perform, and the first track on this CD is no exception. It is interesting to hear the chirping little thrushes piping out above the schmaltsy music, but if I didn't know one was 9-year Jussi Björling, and if there weren't the promise of hearing little Jussi giggle at the end of the performance, I would never have stayed the course. Others disagree. I let them. However, there is another reason for hearing "Sommarglädge" through to the bitter end - the second track. "Vita Rosor" was recorded just 10 years later, and the contrast is astounding. The maturity of the 19-year old Jussi was nothing short of miraculous.

I was going to skip "Ack Värmeland", having a none too pleasant familiarity with it years ago when I lived in a predominantly Swedish community in northern Minnesota. I heard it often at potato sausage and lutefisk suppers sung by Arne Bengtson (with accordian accompaniment supplied by the same Arne Bengtson). He pronounced it "Farmland" and I assume he was singing it to the 80 acres of sand and swamp he owned out east of town.

However, as I reached out to press the skip button, Jussi lovingly caressed the notes of "Ack Värmeland, du sköna," and I was transfixed. By the time he got to the 11th track, "Land, du Välsignade", I was ready to convert to Swedish.

"Adelaïda" is also on this disc, track 17, his 1939 version. By this time he was a ripe old 28-years. I have heard of later versions done with less slavish attention to Beethoven's instructions. Regrettably, I never heard them so I cannot compare, but perhaps it is not a bad thing to follow the instructions of someone like Beethoven. This interpretation is full, passionate, and flawless to my critical ear.

As is "Frühlingsglaube", track 19. The trouble with "Frühlingsglaube" is that it is too short. I reach for "repeat" when I hear Harry Ebert strike the first notes.

Many of these performances appear on other discs, so you might want to go through the play list to see if this might be repetitious. However, it is a thorough list set in a logical order that makes the entire listening period greatly satisfying. Total playing time is 77.36. I listened to this with a friend shortly after I got it. When it finished playing she looked up and said, "Is that all?"

4 out of 5 stars Hear Frank Melrose!.......2000-11-04

Another in the massive Document series, this complation features two solos by Alex Hill, a duet by the unknown "Smith and Irvine", and eight solos recorded by Cassino Simpson in the Illinois State Mental Hospital at Elgin.

The reason for buying this disc, however, are the eleven solos and two band recordings by Kansas City Frank Melrose. Strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton (to the extent that some record collectors in the late thirties thought that his recordings might be pseudonymous performances by Morton himself), enthusiasts can gain hours of pleasure from identifying the sources of the Morton quotes scattered liberally throughout the solos. Solos like "Pass the Jug" and "Jelly Roll Stomp" are an interesting hybrid of percussive barrelhouse playing and elements of Morton's distinctive style.

Melrose recorded a few more band sides (with Johnny Dodds and others), and two solo alternative takes which are available elsewhere on Document. The recordings on this disc provide the basis of Melrose's recorded output, and should be heard by all those interested in 1920s - 1930s barrelhouse piano styles.
