Touches the Soul.......2005-05-11
This was my 2nd Danny Wright CD and, just like the first (Phantasys), the music seems to touch my soul - something I have not felt from any other artist.
This CD is absolutely wonderful! If you enjoy the sound of the piano, and are looking to find a CD to help you relax and unwind, this is definately the one for you! I can't speak highly enough about Danny's music - he is truly amazing!
Reflective and Introspective.......2000-02-13
This is a collection of quiet, soothing music that brings a smile to the heart and warms the soul. A number of piano albums often seem empty without accompaniment, yet Mr. Wright illustrates why solo piano can be the most expressive of any musical medium. His compositions are clean, clear, and crisp...much like the season he evokes in his title.
The album contains selections that are uplifting and full of hope, while others are spare and atmospheric. As I listen to the music, I often imagine the artist in a meadow, beneath a canopy of golden and amber leaves, the sunlight dappled on his keyboard...a time for reflection...for instrospection.
A Melodical thought of peace and tranquility.......1999-09-10
This album begins soft and peaceful, and eventually delves deeper into your thoughts. I find that it is incredibly relaxing, and even though only one track is actually titled "Autumn Dreams" I find that the entire collection makes me remember my favorite time of year. Most of the pieces seem to be a variation of each other, but I can still listen to this CD for hours at a time.
Aptly titled and perfect for curling up with a good book!.......1998-11-26
If you enjoy simple piano recordings not overly flowery or heavily styled, you will enjoy Autumn Dreams. You can really sense the leaves falling and the fragrance of the land during the seasonal change. It is in good company with other pianists such as Jim Brickman or Liz Story.

Album Description
About this CD (notes from the artist )
Topanga Dreams
Since 1988, I've lived in Topanga, California. This small mountain town has taught me the true meaning of community. By being there for each other, we can make dreams come true. May all your dreams come true...
Katyia's Dance
This song has evolved from being a solo dance performance piece in our Mystic Journey shows into a passionate tango...for two. So grab someone you love and enjoy the dance!
China Lily
This flute was a gift from my Dize (rhymes with pizza) teacher and is one of my favorites. Whenever I play it, I am transported to a place of inner peace and stillness.
Lhasa Love
I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!
Aduman
Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.
Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05
I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.
Nice!.......2004-01-01
Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. For more bamboo and metal flute improvisations, in this case without accompaniment, check out also Richard Warner's "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind".
Fabulous!.......2002-07-05
I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.
Fabulous.......2001-06-28
I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.
Makes you want to listen and dance at the same time.......2000-08-31
This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.

Top of the line - incredible!.......2007-05-13
If I could give this 100 stars I would do it. Since my trip to Russia in 2006 I "discovered" Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and have since purchased much of his music on CDs and DVDs. All tracks on this particular CD are incredibly beautiful - beyond imagination. Mr. Hvorostovsky was rightfully chosen the "Best Singer of the World" when he was a young man. His lush, full baratone voice is, as the young generation says, "to die for". He has an impressive range, and one can tell he feels music deeply by the nuances in his singing. This CD is one of my favorites of his singing.
Long-awaited follow-up to "Dark Eyes".......2003-01-04
Ever since "Dark Eyes", one of the first albums of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, came out, I've been wishing for the baritone to record more Russian romances. Looks like Delos is more committed to preserving this magnificent voice on record more than Philips did. After all, "Dark Eyes" had a lot of orchestral music, though wonderfully performed by Ossipov orchestra, it effectively reduced the sang material by some about 15 minutes or so. This is certainly not the case here. Well oven an hour of excellent singing is recorded (close-miked) with no interruptions. The songs themselves are the ones most often performed as encored by Russian singers. While baritones or basses have the strongest claim to them, most likely stemming from a long Russian tradidion of low male voice solo, tenors and even mezzo-sopranos have performed some of those to great acclaim.
The absolute hardest thing about performing these songs is not to make them sound sappy, vulgar, or over-done. Of all Russian singers who dealt with this material, I most often think of bass Boris Shtokolov, who sang them with utmost care. Dmitri does just that here. His care for the texts is what strikes me first while listening to "I Met You", a reflective serenade to love long lost. While all songs are spectacularly presented, I would like to mention "Misty Morning" and "I loved you". Like the title song, they are both filled with gentle melancholy, and sang with great tenderness and feeling. Some high-energy items, such as "Troika" seem just a little out of place, but the voice is a sheer pleasure to listen to. In "Oh, Could I in Song Tell My Sorrow", there's a strange change from traditional "your heart would break" to "my heart would break". I am not sure as to why this was done, particularly since the Cyrillic texts are absent.
In liner notes, Hvorostovsky explains the dedication of this album to his father, a chemical engineer, who managed to convey his love for the classical music and Russian romances to his son. I think all fathers need to learn from this man. Wondrous results stem from right upbringing!
The only minor quibble I have is the cover picture. It seems like the producers wanted to target exclusively the female part of the audience by using lots of shades of red color and lots of subdued candlelight. Well, I am sure there are lots of Dmitri's fans among men, particularly those of us who study voice, so I wish Delos would not make the cover so extravagant.
The engineering of this album, though, is very appropriate. The voice is placed well above orchestra (conducted with perfection by Constantine Orbelian) and each word is clearly heard. Together with Verdi Arias recording this shows that Delos engineers are fully capable of capturing the voice of this size and beauty well on record, something I doubted when listening to an otherwise lovely album of Neapolitan Songs.
I am sure non-Russian speakers will enjoy this CD just as much as Russians. After all, we all feel the same, and Dmitri's exceptional talent just makes it easier to communicate across cultural barriers.
ANOTHER WONDERFUL ALBUM FROM DMITRI.......2002-10-11
Once again, Dmitri Hvorostovsky has done another beautiful album. I'm completely thrilled with his last three releases on the Delos lable--the Verdi Album, the Passione di Napoli album and this new Russian love song album. As I have previously indicated on my review of his Passione di Napoli album, I've been a fan of his since his very beginnings in opera, and I do feel that he is truly in his vocal prime.
This album is for the "romantic at heart". The songs are beautiful as is the singing. All I can say of this endeavor is Bravo!!
I'm truly grateful that Hvorostovky's recording career was extended by the Delos lable!!
Dmitri at his best.......2002-10-09
What a treat this CD is. I've been waiting years for the great Hvorostovsky to record another album of Russian folk music, and this is arguably his best collection of that genre to date. Recorded in August, 2001, Hvorostovsky has never sounded better, and the sound quality admirably complements his rich, velvety baritone. Unlike his earlier collection of Neapolitan songs for the same label (DELOS), the recording balance between singer and orchestra will please everyone this time. Furthermore, the CD benefits from stylishly idiomatic arrangements, some fine conducting from Constantine Orbelian, and the sympathetic support of both the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Russian folk music performers, the Style of Five.
The 19 songs on the CD are described as "Old Russian Romances", or in professional music terminology as "Russian Domestic (Household) Romances". These are passionate songs of love, "often against the background of vast, empty Russian landscapes with long roads under foggy, gray skies", as the liner notes tell us. Hvorostovsky's dark, expressive baritone is ideally suited to such music, and Dmitri aficionados will no doubt recognise two songs from his earlier CDs of this genre, the haunting title track and the wistful "O, If Only I Could Express In Sounds". The latter was featured on his best-selling 1991 "Russian Romances" CD for Philips, but here - if anything - his singing is even more poetic than in earlier days. Comparing the two versions, one is immediately aware of how much freer Hvorostovsky's top notes are on the latest CD, with his upper register showing none of the slightly constricted quality that occasionally marred the earlier CD. This is the voice of a mature artist, and it is rare indeed to hear such committed singing from the soul.
As if the above wasn't enough, the CD comes with translations, generous liner notes, and an alluring cover photo of the handsome Siberian.
Hvorostovsky in his Milieu.......2002-08-31
This is Hvorostovsky at his finest. His magnificent rich creamy baritone is not taxed. He makes you sigh at beauty of his high
mezzo-voce notes, held endlessly, and trailing off to nothingness. The songs themselves are lovely-sad ballads of lost love for the most part, with a few catchy little ditties thrown in for a change of pace.
As crossover discs go, this one is one of the best. A fabulous singer at his prime, singing the songs of his childhood memories.
Bravo Hvorostovsky!

Product Description
"Visions and Dreams" is the long awaited follow up to "Progressive World". AutumnÂ’s Child once again blends the native American flute with colorful instrumentation including: harp, cello, piano, guitar, percussion and more! The first half of the album was written with the "global chamber" sound they have made popular and are so well known for. Sensuous melodies balanced with world music grooves. These arrangements are beautifully orchestrated and well crafted, using the particular instruments with specific purpose and intent that enhances and enriches the compositions. Music that is accessible and appeals to a variety of ages and all walks of life. The last half features a more jazzy influence with pieces like "Open Sky" and the beautiful arrangement of "Be Thou My Vision" to the reggae-ish groove, "Patchouli Breeze". This recording has amazed listeners at how these wood flutes can play so many different styles of music... and all on one cd! The 3 interludes offer abbreviated sonic markers with the native flute and a String Orchestra from Prague Czech Republic, licensed from an upcoming PBS documentary entitled, "Redemption Road". The opening 2 compositions are almost considered one... with "Painting A Dream" played in a dreamy, lyrical style followed by "Avenue Of The Villa", a bit more up tempo with tabla driving the piece. "Midnight Rain" is an absolutely beautiful melodious piece with flute and cello weaving light in the darkness with incidental french horn lines adding to the mix with piano. "Sketches Of Autumn" is sort of a bouncy shuffle that drifts into a lovely arrangement of Neil YoungÂ’s "After The Goldrush"arranged for native flute, cello and guitar. Also worthy of note for this recording is the use of the bamboo bansuri on "An AngelÂ’s Whisper In A Bamboo Garden" as well as "Sunlit Waterfall". "...Bamboo Garden" is one of the most meditative, hypnotic pieces on the album. (hint: listen deep into the cd for an improvisation with bansuri and tabla) "Visions and Dreams" is a prime example of what "new directions" for the native American flute is all about! AutumnÂ’s Child continues to create new sonic territories with their creative approach of fusing different musical designs. Mya Duran - New World Music

Essential for Prokofiev Fans.......2000-07-23
Although this is Prokofiev's second most popular ballet (next to 'Romeo and Juliet'), the complete ballet has been rarely recorded on LP or disc, the most famous being Andre Previn with the LSO, Ashkenazy with the Cleveland (recently re-released), and Pletnev's much heralded 1995 release w/ the Russian National Orchestra on DGG. Rozhdestvensky eclipses them all by a wide margin. Tempos are generally brisk. He accentuates the dark passages lurking within, adding dramatic tension in passages lacking in the other recordings. And his lines are stunning at times. Consider Previn's more popular account by comparison -- it is downright moribund and sluggish.
The orchestral suite from 'The Steel Step' is also excellent. It offers a glimpse into Prokofiev when he tried to write a ballet on Soviet themes at the behest of Sergei Diaghilev. It is a monotonous, steely, dissonant work, but vividly brought to life by Rozhdestvensky's expert conducting.
The only criticism of this title is the recording quality -- the liner notes do not indicate when it was actually recorded although it is likely from the 60s or 70s. As a result, aural defects typical of Soviet recording equipment of the period can be heard, namely shrill brass and tinny violins in the upper treble regions. However, this should not detract from the musicality of these recordings.
By far the very best recording.......1999-09-27
Rozhdestvensky's is by far the very best recording of Prokofiev's neglected ballet masterpiece. Neither Previn's nor Pletnev's comes anywhere near it.

- Einojuhani Rautavaara In Conversation With Vladimir Ashkenazy
Amazon.com
Like fellow Finn Jean Sibelius, Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1928) creates gorgeous music indebted to nature--works that ebb and flow rather than crescendo. But that's where the comparison ends. Rautavaara's works continue to grow and evolve, evoking spirituality, Impressionism, and nonclassical elements; the culmination of which can all be found on the Vladimir Ashkenazy-commissioned Gift of Dreams piano concerto. From its atmospheric opening to the pounding, bluesy chords that follow, Rautavaara has created something truly original here. A Rhapsody in Blue for the 21st century? You decide. Conducting from the piano, Ashkenazy leads the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra through this and Autumn Gardens, a short symphonic work evoking the melancholy beauty of fall and its many colors. This is a very special disc, the premier of two truly great works that you'll be hearing about for a very long time. Essential. --Jason Verlinde

Historic.......2007-03-10
The music of this cd is very interesting. I liked too much the conversation between pianist and composer.
Great stuff.......2002-04-24
I've listened to this concerto many times now and I'm concvinced it's one of Rautavaara's best scores. The piano writing is idiosyncratic and certainly doesn't break any new ground, but does it need to? And what should a Piano Concerto be? The form of this piece is beautifully realised, with a subtlety and ease that bears comparison to Debussy, and is its strongest feature. The initial motive, that Rautavaara explains is actually a quote from another piece, is haunting and memorable and seems to generate the whole work. And in a funny way, the spectre of Rachmaninov seems to hover over the music, which may well have something to do with Ashkenazy comissioning the piece. The concerto is in three movements. The first movement begins with soft slow-moving string chords that linger over the principle motive. The mood is broken by a propulsive, almost violent idea in the piano that rises up and gradually subsides. As the movement progresses we become aware that it is shaped in a long arch, the music taking us back to where we began. The second movement is the heart of the work; containing some of Rautavaara's most searching and poetic music. It begins like a dream, with ideas from the first movement recollected. The mood however soon becomes unsettled and the music moves through a whole range of emotions; hope, expectation, anger, despair, resignation....... The reprise of the opening, when it eventually comes, is absolutely ravishing, a magic moment indeed. The pent-up energy in the first two movements is unleashed in the third movement, the music building steadily to an intense and enigmatic conclusion. Ashkenazy explains that he wanted to be able to play and also conduct the concerto. Perhaps because of this there are a couple of moments of less-than-perfect ensemble but Ashkenazy always plays beautifully and he obviously believes very strongly in the piece.
Autumn Gardens is outwardly more descriptive music, but no less intense and poetic, and beautifully scored too. I prefer the Concerto but that's just me. Both of these pieces are wonderful and deserve to be heard. And don't be put off by the interview at the end of the disc- both these men deserve to be heard too!
well rats.......2000-06-28
I wrote another review put it appears to have been lost, nevermind, the rating should speak for itself. lovely music.
Wonderful music........2000-06-27
This music is difficult to describe. I will throw a few cliched words at you: beautiful, contemplative, but with energy and direction while seeming to wander... confusing? I suppose so, but Rautavaara's voice is unique and artistic. The music is full of light unlike many other nordic composers, and lyricism of a very sophisticated nature. This is music which did not follow Stravinsky's rhythmic innovations, instead daring to weave super-complex melody and line submerged in spare, taught harmony. The color is often monochromatic but the texture is very deep.
I enjoyed this CD on my first listening and continue to enjoy the music as it is not all flash and pattern.
Now, if only my local Orchestra (Portland Symphonic) would get off their a$$es and play some contemporary music... sheesh this CD is proof there can be meaningful music that challenges the listener without frightening away the old batty matrons of the board of directors who think Beetoven is a riot and enfent terrible.
Sounds without substance.......2000-05-28
After repeated listening to both the concerto and the Autumn Gardens, my personal response is I wish there were more music in the music. In the recorded interview, Ashkenazy sounds like a polite but clearly disappointed buyer trying to glean any bit of insight the composer might give to this empty effort. But, Rautavaara talks around it and attempts to cloak the lack of musical substance in some sort of spiritual argument. Good try at a save, but the sales pitch quickly dissipates when you go back to the music and just listen to what was written. I don't begrudge a composer making a good living, but I hope that Mr. Ashkenazy didn't pay a great deal for this concerto.
