About the Artist
Michael Sokolowski has been performing and composing music for over 25 years (classical piano and violin throughout childhood and music composition studies with avant-gardist Robert Stewart in college). A former philosophy graduate student, he abandoned that path to study jazz improvisation both academically and by playing with the leading lights of the Virginia jazz scene in the 1980s. Appeared with the Tim Eddy Trio in legendary French film director Frederic Rossif's, Coeur des Musiciens in 1985. Since then, he has performed and recorded with DMB saxophonist, LeRoi Moore's Basics, Offering (with multi-instrumentalists TIm Reynolds and Worth Proffitt), Chapman Stick master Greg Howard, bassist Lenny Martin, trumpeter John D'earth, Dave Matthews Band, guitar virtuoso Tim Reynolds, among many others. Sokolowski's instrumental trio (with bassist Houston Ross and drummer extraordinaire Johnny Gilmore), Soko, was an vital part of Charlottesville's musical landscape for most of the '90s, and their debut album, In November Sunlight is a popular seller internationally.

WOW!!! This album is great. If you ever sang along to some of the music themes to Monday Night Football this album is for you. It is filled with quite a few older songs and not many sports themed songs. I enjoy it but I can see how some people might not enjoy the selections. Make sure you check the song titles before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Add Paul Simon + Ben Kweller + Bob Dylan + Ben Lee..........2007-08-03

Insightful, playful, spunky, dramatic, passionate, catchy, soulful, smart, addictive.
That's really all you need to know. Oh, and the point that this is an artist to keep your eye (and ear) on.

If the abridged version of this review doesn't quite cut it for you, then by all means, keep reading.
I'm rethinking my initial comparison to Paul Simon, Ben Kweller, Bob, and Ben (but too lazy to change the title). It doesn't quite cut it. Fisher's musical style, while distinct in its own right, was definitely influenced by early folk and blues, and there's a spark of what I can only describe as a distinctly Guthrie vibe (I wonder if that makes sense to the rest of the world?). There's also a kind of indie pop feel (thus the comparison to the two Bens). On top of all that, Fisher's own unique personality really shines through in his music. His style, while fun, is well-rounded; several of his songs are politically driven (but not overbearingly so), and he also manages to convey a fair range of emotions. In sum, Jeremy Fisher shows a great deal of promise here, and I absolutely recommend "Goodbye Blue Monday."

5 out of 5 stars de Hartmann Music for Gurdjieffs Movements.......2002-09-19

This 2-CD set includes a 44-page booklet containing an introduction by Thomas C. Daly, heir and custodian of the De Hartmann Estate, and an extensive article by Wim van Dullemen describing the history of the `39' Movements. This set of Movements is regarded by many as Gurdjieff's magnum opus and the summary of his whole teaching to mankind.
Van Dullemen's article is based largely on interviews with pupils who themselves actually stood in Gurdjieff's classes while he created these Movements. Their experiences, insights and recollections reveal the historical picture with clarity and in unprecedented detail. What's more, the booklet includes a 5-page chronology of Thomas de Hartmann's life and major musical works.
Lavishly illustrated, the booklet further contains thirty photographs of Gurdjieff, De Hartmann, of Movements and historical documents, many of which have never been published before.
The genesis of this whole project, which took several years before it was finally completed, lies with Gert-Jan Blom, the producer of these CDs.

The 37 pieces for the 39 Series were composed by Thomas de Hartmann, c. 1950.
Interpretations of all the pieces-as regards tempo, rhythm, characteristics of melody and other musical dynamics-have been based on personal instructions received over many years from direct pupils of G. I. Gurdjieff. Also, we have studied and taken into account the earliest available recordings of these compositions. Originally no titles, only N-numbers, were given. These N-numbers as well as the indications of tempo stem from the first private publication prepared by de Hartmann himself,
The earliest available recordings, made in 1951, of these compositions, have been studied and taken into account as well.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed very much despite muted scratchy sound on last track.......2007-02-07

I gave this to my father. He was thrilled by the collection of songs. He said the last track was a little scratchy and lower volume but that the sound quality of all of the other tracks was great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band and Greater Music.......2006-03-18

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

2 out of 5 stars A Great Idea, Poorly Executed.......2007-02-12

Like one of the reviewers of the Cure String Quartet Tribute album, I excitedly grabbed this from the shelf of my local music store. Figuring that it would be impossible for this not to be fabulous, I decided to forgo the opportunity to listen to it in the store first. The music of both of these bands is so evocative, distinctive and well arranged it seemed obvious that it would lend itself to classical interpretation; there are even strings on the original Age of Consent. Would that the Quartet had stuck with interpreting. Instead they seem bent on translating these songs, practically note for note. Perhaps they were trying to avoid being labeled as Muzak; perhaps they were aspiring for an edgy 'Alt Classical' flavor ala the brilliant group Rachel's. The result is nervous, jittery, overdone and even frantic at times. One of the things I love about New Order is the way that they instilled electronically flavored music with emotional sincerity, especially on their earlier work. Paradoxically the Quartet appears to be trying to bring out the electronic aspect over the emotional. The one cut where they seemed to back off and let the feeling emerge was Love Vigilantes, and it works beautifully- but then again the original Love vigilantes isn't electronic. I have given this album several plays. I really want to like it, but I'm going to return it. There's more than enough Joy Divsion and New Order material for the Quartet to make a second effort. Hopefully they'll read my review first.

We will all miss this one of a kind great voice. This CD is a must have in every jazz lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Rawls at His Best.......2006-02-17

Lou Rawls had one of the greatest voices in late 20th century popular music. When he was here five years ago to tape a WHRO-produced PBS special with Petula Clark at Chrysler Hall, he still had the goods---the distinctive smoky-smooth baritone voice that graced hits like "Love is a Hurtin' Thing" and "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine," and gave those Garfield specials a touch of class, was in fine shape.

Three years later, though, he was diagnosed with lung cancer (he had smoked in his younger days) and last spring, brain cancer. When he died on January 6th at the age of 70 (or 72; his year of birth is listed differently in different places), he left behind a rich legacy of jazz, soul, blues, gospel and R&B deserving of rediscovery by those who may only know the hits, the beer commercials and the cat cartoons.

His passing was particularly poignant to me because I've been reading a fascinating new biography of Sam Cooke called Dream Boogie, by Peter Guralnick, in which Rawls plays a prominent role. I didn't know that Cooke and Rawls had been close friends growing up in Chicago, and that Lou actually took Sam's place in the teenage gospel group, the Highway QCs, after Cooke left to join the Soul Stirrers in 1950. They remained friends, surviving an automobile accident together near Marion, Arkansas, while traveling between gigs in St. Louis and Greenville, Mississippi, in November 1958. Though Cooke had only minor injuries, the driver was killed and Rawls was left in a coma that lasted a week. It took him three months to regain his memory and a year to fully recover.

In 1962, he began recording as a soloist in his own right. He'd been doing background vocals on his friend's records---his is the voice heard in duet with Cooke on "Bring it on Home to Me," both in harmony and in the "yeah - yeah" call and response sections of the refrain. But late on a cold January night that year, he entered the Capitol Records studio in LA with pianist Les McCann's jazz trio and laid down the tracks for his first album.

Released as Stormy Monday, it is one of my favorite jazz vocal records of all time. Hearing Rawls in such a sparse, unadorned setting is a revelation as he wraps his golden voice around the familiar words of a batch of bluesy standards. From the swinging title track and "Sweet Lover" to the blustery "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water" and the soft balladry of "Lost and Lookin'" and "Willow Weep for Me," he takes these well worn chestnuts and gives them new life. It's an impressive performance. His "God Bless the Child" is the definitive version of Billie Holiday's most famous song.

Lou Rawls would go on to become an award winning, chart topping singer during the golden era of `60s and `70s soul music. He would cover many musical bases during his 40-year solo career---his last CD was called Rawls Sings Sinatra. But for a full appreciation of his vocal magic in its prime, Stormy Monday is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Blues and Jazz.......2001-12-25

This recording is one of the greatest vocal sessions of all time. It puts the so-called blues recordings of today to shame. Don't be put off by Lou Rawls as the singer -- this was done in 1962, when he was only 21. Lou is brilliant -- he interprets every one of these classics with verve, originality and style in the best jazz and blues tradition. Les McCann's playing is subtle and supportive of this talented vocalist. It really is a shame that Lou wasted all of the talent that is so evident on this recording. But you will forget all of that when you listen to it! This is a classic recording which should be in the library of all jazz and blues lovers. 5 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREAT JAZZ LPS OF THE 60s.......2000-05-13

A little known gem, this grand collection. I know, you're thinking Lou Rawls "You'll Never Find a Love Like This". No. This was before the commercial suits came calling, folks. Les McCann, that genius of ivory tinkling, guides young Lou through some sensuous takes of "See See Rider", and best, the definitive version of "Willow Weep for Me" for my money. This one has a piano section that is...well, sublime. Don't pass this CD up if you like great jazz piano and/or vocals. And whatever you think of Rawls milquetoast 70s and 80s output, don't be put off. He's a genius here.

This is one of those cds where I had to listen to it a few times to really start appreciating it. I love the first song "Sunshine". That's what led me to purchase it in the first place. After listening to it several times, several other songs are becoming favorites as well.

      1 out of 5 stars STOP IT!!!.......2006-07-24

This record is terrible and sounds to be something that was popular in the year of 1999. I bought this cd and looking for the closes item that would my life, because this is a bad demo at best. And that is me being kind.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely LOVE this album!.......2006-07-11

This album is a great mix - none of the songs sound the same and I find myself pulling it out to listen to often. Great CD!

      5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2006-03-07

Jay Gordon is the master of the remix and he proved that with the first single of Candy@$$...The Green Velvet Stitches remix, while not the focalpoint of the single, is the best feature. The riff is brutal and the repeating of "loving you is, f'ing you is strange" is (while I've said before the repeating of vulgar lyrics is 'forgivable') brilliant...I can't explain it, it's just brilliant. The club 69 remixes of Blue Monday are better than the Optical vocal remix, but the DJ Dan remix is the best. The original is great, don't get me wrong, but these remixes add so much flare it's undeniable how awsome they are!

3 out of 5 stars Nothing beats the original version.......2004-01-10

I confess...I like Orgy's version of the New Order classic "Blue Monday". I like that booming techno/industrial sound that the group gives to the '80s classic. Still nothing beats the original version which is vastly superior to Orgy's rendition. I bought this single a few years ago because I had no desire to buy the entire album. It is just as well because the follow up single to "Blue Monday" sucked big time. Although I do like Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday", I thought (and still do) that the remixes on the single were pretty terrible, except for the Club 69 remix but otherwise I didn't like the rest of the remixes. "Blue Monday" does not sound good as a drum and bass song which you can hear on the Optical Vocal mix. Secondly including the Green Velvet mix of "Stitches" was pointless and also sounded terrible. I don't care for dub remixes. They just bore me. Other than the single mix, the only remix I really did like was Club 69 and that is because Club 69 didn't try to re-work the song completely like drum & bass artist (or group) Optical.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the 'Stitches' single, that's for sure.......2001-08-06

I'm in a good mood right now, so I'm not going to be as critical of the 'Blue Monday' single as I was 'Stitches'. For starters, with the exception of the first track (the single mix), if you just blindly pop this CD into your player without looking at it, you'll be hard pressed to figure out what you're listening to, which isn't necessarily bad, as some of these songs come off really cool.

We start the CD off with the single version of Blue Monday... if you've got 'Candyass', you've heard this; if you have a radio, you've heard this. The second track is the Optical Vocal Mix, which is pretty much your straight-forward drums 'n' bass mix of Blue Monday, and while only 6:37 long, it feels longer than most songs on here. Track three, the Green Velvet Mix of 'Stitches', it blows. For the love of God, stop trying to remix this song, it's not possible. It's basically six minutes and eleven seconds of... looped over a monotonous tune. Just terrible, I can't say enough bad things about this "song".

My patience has paid off! Track four and five, the Club 69 Mix and Club 69 Dub, respectively, are REALLY good. They must have samples from the original New Order 'Blue Monday', because the beats from this sound IDENTICAL to New Order's version. The songs have this 80's feel to them, almost like a New Order/Orgy hybrid song, but at the same time they sound very cutting-edge, and are my personal favorites from the single. The Club 69 Mix clocks in at a whopping 8:40, while the Dub is half a minute shorter, but you'll wish both of them were longer, they're that good. Track six is the Optical Instrumental Mix, which is the Optical Vocal Mix without, you guessed it, vocals! Moving on, for track seven, we get DJ Dan! If you've read my 'Opticon' review, you'll know how much I love this guy ;-). While his 'Stitches' remix was an abomination of remixes, he does a good job of remixing 'Blue Monday', so much that you can actually recognize the song he's mixing!

Overall, this is a MUCH better buy than the 'Stitches' single. You also get the video for 'Blue Monday' in QuickTime format... while I wasn't impressed with any of the videos from 'Candyass', it's still a nice addition to the CD, and makes this a worthwhile purchase. Orgy should let Charlie Clouser, Trent Reznor, Josh Eustis or Troy Van Leeuwen remix some of their stuff, and then I'd be REALLY happy.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff - makes me wanna dance, among other things.......2001-04-14

I bought this single long after I had both of Orgy's albums. They always get great people to remix their stuff, and I listen to the Blue Monday remixes several times a week. If you like this song and dance music, then this would be a good buy for you. The original music of the song is not very prevelent on most the remixes. There is also an excellent remix of Dissention on here that I like even better than the album version. You can hear the background lyrics better and, on this remix, unlike most Orgy remixes, they left in a lot of the original music. Great beats on the whole single - and heck, the band themselves admitted to listening to the thing for four nights straight when they first heard it (they weren't involved in the remixing for this single). And the Club69 track is aptly named. Pay attention to the beat...

it may not be the best thing orgy has ever done but at least it's good. orgy it a great band. their music is fun and original. as for the two people above who gave orgy such a low rating all i have to say to you is if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. i don't go around bashing the music you like. maybe this isn't the best they've ever but i bet they're making more money doing a half descent song like this than you ever could. what was the point of just saying that it sucked. i think you both should be a little more mature next time you decide to voice your opinion. it's your opinion and i respect that but if it isn't going to do any good you should just keep it to yourself. orgy is the best band i have ever heard and i hope they continue making wonderful music for a long time! this is a great cd!
