Customer Reviews:
Not perfect, but that's the way I like it.......2002-09-20
I have become very fond of this album, which just simmers with raw energy from the start. There's a fun introduction that leads into one of the most smoking versions of "Green Onions" I've heard. Duck Dunn's impact is felt immediately. He thumps his bass a little louder and digs into the groove a little deeper than his predecessor, Lewie Steinberg, who played on the Green Onions and Soul Dressing albums. Granted, this is a live recording and Steinberg would have probably been more aggressive live, but nobody can groove like Dunn. He rips through "Red Beans and Rice" and the rest of the set with swinging authority. This was recorded live in 1967, not 1997, but the sound is really good. Booker T. Jones played superbly on this night. His B-3 sounds amazing. The album's energy dips somewhat when The Mar-Keys come on. Except for Steve Cropper, Dunn, and trumpeter Wayne Jackson, the original Mar-Keys basically ceased to exist after their 1961 hit "Last Night". What they became, in fact, was Booker T. & the MGs plus The Memphis Horns, the heart of soul music in the '60s. The material and sound of The Mar-Keys is similar to high school R & B bands and fraternity circuit bands of the late '50s and early '60s, and thus, is just not as creative or as exciting as the MGs'. It's good, solid dance music of that period. The horn section leaves Booker T. and company to finish things off. After Cropper's soulfully sly guitar solo on "Booker Loo", the group, led by Al Jackson's get out your seat drumming, hits a groove so strong, if you can't shake your backside to it, you've got a hole in your soul. The first time I heard this album, I wasn't overly impressed. I had silly thoughts like, hey, that's not how Cropper played on the original "Hip Hug-Her". But, this album is deceptively addicting. Seems the longer I own it, the more often I play it. Just as almost anything from the MGs' catalogue, or all of Stax Records, for that matter, it gets better with every listen.
The Sound Isn't The Best - But It's Worth The Annoyance.......2001-01-02
Live recordings of soul and rock not yet having reached a modicum of sophistication, you can forgive the rather dulled sound of this recording. Forget that - and that Booker and the boys are keeping it close enough to the original cuts - and just be happy with the way they manage regardless to dig in just a little bit harder in front of an audience. Especially since a) there's just a little more blood being shed when the Mar-Keys horns (known soon enough as the Memphis Horns) join up for their turns, particularly "Last Night"; and, b) at this writing, it is the only known live recording available of the greatest backing band in the history of classic deep Southern soul.
Hit the road, Stax.......2000-09-19
Recorded live at the Olympia Theatre in Paris in March of 1967 (during a European tour of the Stax-Volt Revue), this disc captures a fine performance by Booker T. & The MG's during their peak period. They open with a pretty straightforward rendition of their smash hit, "Green Onions," followed by the always funky "Red Beans and Rice" and "Hip Hug-Her," which would become another big hit for them that summer. Midway through the set, the group is joined by the horn section of Andrew Love, Wayne Jackson, and Joe Arnold to become the Mar-Keys for three numbers, including their signature hit, "Last Night." The sound is extremely clear and clean for a live recording, and the audience is hardly audible at all during the actual songs (even throughout the rousing "Gimme Some Lovin'"). However, despite some excellent playing by the musicians, this album is rather unremarkable. It's interesting to hear one of soul music's greatest house bands doin' their thing on stage, but the selections are almost interchangeable with the album versions. Even though they could surely tear the roof off in concert, they never attempt any extended jams or improvisational moments (and if they did, they're not included here). With the exception of the band introductions, there's zero chitchat between tracks, and the guys knock out ten instrumentals in just over 30 minutes. It's certainly not essential, but for fans of the classic Stax-Volt sound, it's worth a listen. Half of this album's cuts are also included on the much better "Stax/Volt Revue Vol. 3 - Live In Europe," which also features some great stuff by Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, and Otis Redding.
memoirs of an aging `soul brother.......2000-02-12
Ì bought this album on vinyl when it was first released about a gazillion years ago. I played it until it was useless. Booker T. and the M.G.s, the Mar-Keys and the late members of the Bar-Kays formed all the the musical accompaniment of those great 60`s soul hits from Memphis (Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd to name a few). The quality of this recording is of the `60`s live variety so don`t expect it to contain the perfection of current such presentations. Sometimes the crowd noise is more than you would like, for example. Might as well lace up your boogie-in`shoes before you listen, because their ain`t no way you`re gona sit down when it`s on. Final hint: Make sure the shingles on your roof are nailed right down and then crank up the music. I`m not certain but I think I read somwhere that it`s a sin to play this CD softly.

Stylish Material from Top to Bottom.......2005-08-13
A hard to find out of print CD (I bought the LP when it came out - circa 1987) but it is well worth digging for it. Extremely listenable, smoothly produced and stylish syth-piano material. Mostly up-tempo but some slower numbers also.
Some interesting overdubbed vocals on a couple of the cuts, including "You're Falling in Love" -- very nicely mixed with the piano work.
Great cuts, from top to bottom. My favourite of his funk/jazz albums. Some similarities to the earlier album "Fantasy" (1985) but if you only want one I'd buy this one.
Hidden Gem!!.......2004-03-11
After listening to tracks off this CD on KKSF in San Francisco 15 years ago, I decided to search high and low for one of the last albums on the Columbia label by the jazz piano legend. I finally found a used version in a second hand book store for 5 bucks! It was worth the wait. "My Love Leads You Home" & "Shamballa" are the highlights on this 7 track CD, which I wish could have been longer. To this day, Ramsey Lewis continues to entertain and gives us a hard to find treasure!
Buy it if you can find it!!

Still undecided.......2006-02-23
I've had this CD for a while, but I still can't decide if I really like it, or if I'm just still trying hard to like it. I of course still remember (fondly) when these guys went under the name The Gadjits, and made some really fun ska, but there are almost entirely no remnants of their previous incarnation present here (and understandably so, which explains the band name change). But they seemed to be very skilled musicians and interesting songwriters, and I don't limit my interests to ska entirely, so I figure these guys deserve as much chance as any band.
And I almost fell in love with them. Heat Shield is great, and Black Guitar Kalashnikov is even better, along with a few other really solid songs (with the final track really deviating a bit, which was also nice). But it seems like every time I listen to the CD, I get lost in the same sort of sound. They've got a very cohesive album here, but I suppose it seems almost too cohesive, which is a good indicator that subjectively I'm not really that much a fan of their style. But I really enjoy other bands that play this type of music, so that can't entirely be the issue.
But regardless, they're solid musicians and have put together some pretty good music here. If you're looking for any remnants of their former band, then don't bother at all, but if you're a fan of their more straightforward rock style, give it a try - you can probably get it fairly cheaply anyway.
As an aside, though, their next CD, Revenge, I have been thoroughly enjoying. You might be better suited to check out that one first.
great band great CD.......2006-01-23
I saw this band last night in San Antonio and got this CD at the show. It is an awesome band. They played with four other bands and they were last and were worth it. They played 3 or 4 songs from this CD. I was able to hang out with the band before the show and after. It was fabulous. I recommend anyone to buy this CD and get their new one that comes out in Feb 2005!!!!

Album Description
The incendiary soul / jazz / funk of The Bo-Keys' "The Royal Sessions" is a hard-hitting and authentic modern take on Memphis' original soul-stew sound - a mixture of original instrumental and vocal features that fuse R&B fundamentals with elements of modern hip-hop.
An all-star section of Stax sidemen - Ronnie Williams (The Bar-Kays, David Porter) on Hammond B-3 organ, drummer Willie Hall (The Bar-Kays, the Blues Brothers), and Charles "Skip" Pitts (Isaac Hayes, Al Green) on wah-wah guitar - joins garage rock prodigy Scott Bomar (Impala) on bass to lay down deep funk grooves for a mighty horn section consisting of Memphis' finest young players.
Recorded and mixed at Willie Mitchell's (Hi Records, Al Green) Royal Studios, The Royal Sessions is steeped in the Memphis tradition. But it's much more than an homage: it's the sound of Memphis now - familiar, fresh, and unquestionably fantastic.
Customer Reviews:
Review: BoKey's Royal Sessions.......2007-01-04
Good CD with good musicians. If you like blues, jazz, or both -- you'll like this CD. The title track is probably the best.
Musical Comfort Food.......2005-01-15
The Bo-Keys are an all-instrumental group who specialize in funky southern soul. Guitarist Skipp Pitts and Drummer Willie Hall are both veterans of the legendary Stax records, the label which called itself "Soulsville USA." "The Royal Sessions" channels the spirit of Memphis and Muscle Shoals; each track is infused with a pulsating rhythm section and down-home horn charts.
The Bo Keys are at their best when they keep it simple; tunes like "Coming Home Baby" and "Deuce and a Quarter" feature soulful organ and horns over a fatback rhythm groove. The ballad "I Remember Stax"- which features some beautiful guitar work by Skip Pitts- is one of the disc's highpoints. While most of the tracks on "The Royal Sessions" are solid performances, there are a few weak-points. A decent performance of the Jimmy Smith workhorse "Back at the Chicken Shack" is marred by a silly vocal track featuring a Wolfman Jack sound-alike babbling about hot sauce or ribs or something. It's the kind of gimmick that might impress House of Blues patrons, but serious music fans will probably find themselves reaching for the "skip" button on their CD player. "My Country Loves Me", another tune with a spoken vocal track, sounds like an attempt at Gil Scot-Heron style political commentary that never quite coheres.
"The Royal Sessions" is the musical equivalent of comfort food; while not necessarily original or innovative, it's hot, greasy and sure to bring a smile.
HYPE.......2004-08-30
i bought this cd recently after i'd read a few favorable reviews, the memphis gunslingers involvment, etc. the cd is okay, but doesn't live up to all the hype. here's a few things: the rap/spoken vocal stuff is really really awful. the jimmy smith cover song is unlistenable. their originals are not that hot. overall, regardless of the personnel, it's not essential. if you are already hip to this genre of music, this cd is no big deal. i already used my copy for trade credit at my local cd store. if you are looking for a new band playing this type of music, try a cd by "the dipolmats of solid sound" - they are a current 60's soul/instrumental quartet who absolutely bury the bo-keys.
You need this CD.......2004-07-09
My sister sent me this CD for my recent birthday. I'm glad she did. This is a nasty, greasy mix of full-on funk, R&B, and soul ripped out by some masters in Memphis. These cats played with Isaac Hayes, Booker T and the M.G.'s, and sat in on Stax sessions. They throw down the jams live to tape and we get to listen in. If you want some music that feels like late 60s music updated for today - this is your stuff. Daddy like. Smoke up some ribs and spin this ASAP.
The NEW Kings of Memphis!.......2004-06-16
It's awful nice when you find a record label you can trust to deliver something great or at the very least interesting. Memphis' Yellow Dog Records is just that. Home to one of the best blues artists of the last couple years Mark Lemhouse as well as The Bluff City Backsliders Yellow Dog now brings us in it's on going tradition of great AND interesting Memphis' own new instumental soulfunk masters The Bo-Keys and their new release The Royal Sessions. I would say first release but they did back up the legendary Rev.Al Green on his gorgeous return to tip-top pop form I Can't Stop. There's been some talk about the Bo-Keys using words like revival, revisionism, and the dreaded retro but that plain don't get it. Yeah, Ike Hayes begat Booker T begat The Bar-Kays begat the Bo-Keys or somethingerother and yeah, it was recorded at the amazing Willie Mitchell's Royal Studio (home to Rev. Green's classic recordings) but that's just a pinch of the spice in the recipe for this new and greasier Memphis stew and supa summer evening BBQ. This is The New Sound of Memphis baby. This is a sharp-dressed and sweatin' at midnight popped crease hangin' loose broke down no need to fix it glide in yr slide dip in yr hip stroll from uptown to straight DOWNtown freshness. I know you already read the Who's WHO on this but to refresh howsabout Skip Pitts (you know his wahwah built the Theme from Shaft)on guitar bobbin' and stingin' like a summer picnic bee. Back that up with keyboard maestro Ronnie Williams (that's him on Rufus Thomas' Do The Funky Chicken) on the B3 organ then back that up with Bar-Kays drummer Willie Hall keepin' it slapped down. Don't forget former garage band bassist and Bo-Keys band leader Scott Bomer drivin' the bottom and trumpeter Marc Franklin and sax man Jim Spake shinin' like new chrome dubs and this Caprice classic is swangin' with funky junque in the trunk to spare. Fans of the old skool Stax/Volt/Atlantic/Motown sound and fans of new soul kool bands like Mofro get yr wallets out now. The Bo-Keys are the Feel Funky hit of the summers to come!

I should have known when I didn't see any mention of this compiliation on Alicia's website that this might be a waste of money and time. It would have been much better if it were strickly an intrumental approach to her songs. Instead it is various people attempting to sound like Alicia. I'm being very generous when I say attempting to sound like her. Don't waste your money on this one.

Album Description
This project was born out of the depths of inspiration and made possible through a special blend of creativity and talent to produce a virtual marriage of the essence of jazz and the eternal soul of gospel. It was a long, two-and-a-half year process, but well worth the wait and effort. The uphill climb "Ascension" if you will has taken Riley and Richburg into heavenly places dwelling with Godthe Creator of their inner song. Terrence took his own advice, stepped out on faith and following the Lord's leading produced "Ascension," seeing it unfold as a flower into an incredible revelation. The response from listeners of the project has ranged from sheer enjoyment and excitement to "this is an incredible album," to "I just couldn't stop listening to itI played it all night long!" Don't underestimate the potential of this engaging sea of opportunity. Don't overlook this sincere offering of spirit-filled innovationand certainly don't forfeit this, your appointed moment in destiny, to hear the amazing music by R&R on their debut CD, "Ascension"A RICHESCAPE MUSIC Productions Experience.
