For years, the soundtrack to Blade Runner held legendary status among fans of Greek synthesist Vangelis. Except for a few cuts on the Themes compilation, it had never been released on vinyl or CD, although there was an orchestral version of the score. But in 1994, 22 years after Vangelis composed the dark, edgy soundtrack to director Ridley Scott's archetypal science fiction thriller, the music of Blade Runner came out in all its cybernoir glory.
Vangelis couched his electrosymphonic score in percussive rhythms and shadowed timbres. Effectively interpolating dialogue from the film, the CD moves from the threatening tension of "Blush Response" to the ethereal wordless vocal of Mary Hopkin over a water-drop synthesizer sequence on "Rachel's Song." A few tracks, notably "Love Theme" with Dick Morrisey's smarmy saxophone solo, drip with Hollywood sentimentality, but Vangelis quickly wipes that away with the hyperdrive of "Blade Runner (End Titles)." --John Diliberto

Stellar music for a Stellar classic.......2007-06-13
Vangellis' haunting score sets the background and mood
for this distopic world perfectly!
Sciencefiction as it should always be!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-13
A remarkable example of a soundtrack that fits like a glove to the movie it accompanies!!!!!!
Great Music.......2007-05-12
I have been looking for the original soundtrack to Blade Runner for years,I even recorded the love theme from the movie I had on tape. I was sure thrilled to see it was available on CD years later. The "Love Theme" is my favorite. "Rachel's Song" and "Blade Runner" are my next two favorites. The tape recorded version was very hissy and full of noises, but the CD is so crystal clear, and an extended version of total perfection. Vangelis is great, and this CD is a masterpiece.
Blade Runner (Movie Soundtrack).......2007-02-14
A great selection for all Vangelis and Blade Runner fans. I've been trying to dig out my old cassette version to compare the playlists, but have not yet reached the proper depth. One might want to do that to ensure that they will be ordering the product they remember from the past.
It only gets better with age.......2006-12-21
This is the Origin of Vangelis's reputation. Blade Runner.
Vangelis succeeded in delivering a prefect album, no other could have fitted better for a movie like Blade Runner.
Forgetting the movie, the music in this album is simply: Fresh and relaxing with a mixture of arabic singing in some of the tracks.
You don't need to be into any kind of specific genre to appreciate the music on this album. Vangelis uses all mixtures here; voices, horns, drums, keyboards and more, delivering one of nicest relaxing soundtrack I have heard.
I personally own all Vangelis's music but this one is my favorite.
A 5 star CD for a 5 star movie.
Other great Vangelis music:
1. Oceanic
2. El Greco
Other great Soundtrack:
1. Kingdom of heaven
2. The thin red line

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29
Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"
Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Disappointing.......2006-08-19
I like the music, but the sound quality is terrible. I bought this CD because it was released in 2003, but there is ZERO improvement in sound quality from previous older tracks.
Enough with the damn compilations!.......2005-06-11
First of all I like Vangelis very much. However I have had it with the way that his music is being released. We are consistently given compilation releases (usually of the same tracks that are on other releases). WHAT IS THE POINT????!!
All the more frustrating is that Vangelis has a ton of unreleased music that many fans like myself have been after for years. Sorry the bootlegs on Ebay just don't cut it.
Where's an official release of "Cavafy", "The Bounty", "Francesco", and "Bitter Moon". Where is all the still unreleased music from "1492", "Blade Runner", "Antarctica" and "Chariots of fire", yes he released soundtracks for these films but they were sadly lacking.
Unfortunately we will probably have to wait for Vangelis to demise before we ever get these tracks, if even then.
worth buying, has seven good Vangelis songs.......2005-05-25
Some may complain that this is not a definitive Vangelis CD. Nope, it is far from being that, but it has seven good songs on it that make it worth purchasing for less than $20. Those seven good songs are: Hymne, Alpha, Chariots of Fire, Missing, Pulsar, Petite Fille de la Mer, and L'enfant. Of course, those are just my personal favorites.
Excellent Overview of Vangelis' Best Known Songs.......2004-06-10
It's hard to keep track of the number of compilations of Vangelis. Off the top of my head, I can think of "The Best of", "Greatest Hits", "Themes", "Portraits", and "Reprise". But they never got it right, something was always off, or one period or another of his career was not covered. Now comes "Oddisey: The Definitive Collection". While it may be pushing your luck to proclaim anything as a Vangelis "definitive" compilation", given his prolific output over the years, I am here nevertheless to tell you that this compilation is as good as it will get.
"Oddisey: The Definitive Collection" (18 tracks, 78 min.) in my opinion truly does compile all of Vangelis' best know tracks and greatest hits. Most of the tracks on here will sound immediately familiar, many because they are movie themes (Chariots of Fire being the most famous of course, but also The Missing, Blade Runner, thankfully containing both the beginning and end titles, Mutiny on the Bounty, and others), and other that became well known in commercials (Hymne, L'Enfant, among others). There can be no denying the creativity and talents of Vangelis. There are 2 bonus tracks, "I'll Find My Way Home" and "State of Independence", the 2 best known tracks of Jon & Vangelis, a nice touch to the album.
I share my frustration with other reviewers here that there is tons of great Vangelis music out there that remains unreleased. To be sure, Vangelis deserves a box-treatment of rare and unreleased tracks. But if you are looking for a single-disk overview of his best known songs, look no further: "Oddisey" is it. Released in Fall, 2003, it is a nice way to commemorate Vangelis turning 60 (say it ain't so!).

Disspointed when I got it.......2007-08-01
This soundtrack is equivalent to seeing some joker at Applebees playing Jimi Hendrix songs in the corner vs. seeing Jimi play front row at Woodstock - no comparison. When I picked-up this cassette in the 80's and played it for the first time, I said, "W.T.F.?" Just buy the REAL soundtrack by Vangelis.
The other one is better!.......2006-11-30
I like the other CD better - the original soundtrack with all the vocals fromt he movie. It's a much more wholistic experience. I like that is is more undustrial - the way the movie is. It's sexy and entertaining.
I recommend the original!
better than the other version in my opinion.......2006-10-31
This is exactly what I have been looking for because the music doesn't include the narration that exists in the other available Blade Runner CD. This version is definitely my personal preference because it is much more like my old vinyl LP, which is what I really wanted. The music is great too, but I am happier with this version than the other I purchased several years ago.
Imaginative And Accessible Pop-Oriented Adaptation.......2006-03-13
Vangelis' original recordings for the 1982 sci-fi thriller became mired in legal squabblings and were ultimately not released until years later. In the meantime a secondary source of the film's music was produced, using a conventional orchestration rather than the heavily synthesized sound that is Vangelis' trademark. The result is a warm, rich, highly accessible album that is by turns brilliant and imaginative.
While purists may scoff at an adaptation of an original film soundtrack, there is no doubt that this album accurately reproduces the original soundtrack's epic sweep, from the heavily-orchestrated, dense soundscapes delineating Los Angeles of the future, to the sparse, spare, jazz-based themes of the principal characters Deckard and Rachel. Further, while many of the cuts created by Vangelis for the film are simply incidental material used to background the visual action, the adaptations are extrapolated musically to produce coherent compositions that are musically whole.
The soloists featured in 'Blade Runner Blues', 'Rick And Rachel', and 'Memories Of Green' know their jobs and perform them well. The songs are sentimental and pop-oriented, but hardly insipid, and provide a more intimate interpretation of music that was never fully realized in the film.
The film itself is mired in controversy over its theatrical edit, which has been superceded in recent years by the so-called Director's Cut. This soundtrack adaptation is probably more accurately representative of the film as it was originally presented in theatres, than the re-release with its heavy dose of film-noir pessimism and ambiguity.
I enjoy both versions of the film, and I enjoy both versions of the soundtrack. Afficionados of the film and its music should have both copies in their collections.
Simply Beautiful.......2004-05-21
I dont know about anyone else but I have listened to both versions of the Blade Runner soundtrack.... and love them both. My favorite is this one though. "Memories of green" on this CD evokes an emotional response that Vangelis' CD never could. If you are a Blade Runner fan and love classical music, then this will surely please you.

Robotic and Science Fiction Movie Soundtrack.......2005-11-05
This cd contained some bad music overall but some of the really good ones were excellent. So I guess I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy this CD.
IT STINKS.......2004-10-13
Disco sci-fi?? They got to be kidding. Stay away from this mess. The 1 star rating is false. It's the only way I could get this thru. It's really a big ZERO.
Cool variation of the themes........1999-07-13
These are some of the best science fiction movie themes thrown onto one CD. The music is changed into a more jazzy, futuristic tone. Some of the songs suck, but it is an overall good CD.
Too synthetic!.......1999-04-14
This is actually a re-release of a CD that originally offered several more tracks, including "The Twilight Zone" and a jazzy variation on "2001."
This version offers no substitutes for the missing tracks, and the new arrangements of the surviving tunes are lifeless interpretations pumped out of a sytnthesized orchestra.
The kiddies might like the upbeat tempos, though.
Caveat emptor!

Gorgeous.......2007-06-14
This is one of the most beautiful albums ever recorded, and this CD edition has marvelous sound clarity, even better than the LP edition I still have. I would classify it as classical rather than new age -- the pieces are based on real, ancient music, and sound just the way you would expect them to if you could climb into a time machine and visit each of these civilizations. Perfect! And finally back in print! Hooray!
Ambient Music of the Ancient World.......2007-04-29
This is a beautiful album that really deserves to be better known. Yes, it is disappointingly short (just under 30 minutes), but quality is more important than quantity.
The tracks here range from very meditative and dreamy (Japan, Pompeii, Lemuria) to slightly eerie (Egypt, Babylon). If you liked the brief snippet of "Pompeii" that Ridley Scott used in Blade Runner (it's an odd title for such a serene piece of music), you'll probably like the rest of the album. This music does a good job of evoking the ancient world, and at the same time, a few of the tracks (particularly "Pompeii" and "Lemuria") have a strangely futuristic sound as well. It's amazing what Gail Laughton managed to achieve with just a harp (and a few minor backup instruments on a few tracks). Several tracks from this album have become permanent fixtures on the "sleep music" playlist on my iPod.
Overall, I would highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys ambient/new age/dreamy music.

Synthesizer Nostalgia & Discovery.......2004-04-29
This collection is a mix of originals and rerecordings by other artists, and ordinarily I wouldn't touch anything not by the original artists. Here however there are exceptions. Some of the tracks are banal themes like Stallones "Lock Up", or the simplistic Yanni theme for the Jennifer Jason Leigh film "Heart of Midnight" (look out for the sound boom in shot in that one). There are odd curios such as the pleasant "Turtle Beach" track, and the booming "Das Boot" and "Big Trouble in Little China". But there are some great tracks in here as well, good enough to force a purchase.
Firstly there is the "Haunted Summer" track by Christopher Young - a melodic cathedral of ambience which sweeps you for a full bodied seven minutes of near religious experience akin to Brian Eno's "Ascent" (used in "Traffic"). Add to this the simple repetitionist love theme by Jack Nitzche from the bombed Kevin Costner/Tony Scott film "Revenge", also the inspired two toned pace of Tangerine Dream's track from "The Park is Mine" (early Tommy Lee Jones), and lastly pepper liberally with the Mark Ayres version of the "Bladerunner" theme - another seven minutes, and might I add in comparison with Vangelis' original - I actually prefer this powerful rendition of the classic track!
These four tracks save the compilation from complete novelty value, and they shine amongst early contributions to the synthesized cinema sountrack. It is a CD you will probably want to program on your CD player as the mix is a little odd, and sadly somewhat flat in the middle. However, I recommend the CD for the reasons above alone.
A fantastic synthesizer soundtrack, but no Blade Runner?.......2003-04-19
This soundtrack definately has some of the best synthesized music out there. The pulsating rhythms and entrapping melodies lead one's mind to dream of distant planets and sci-fi scapes. Although the music is reminiscent of Blade Runner, the sci-fi movie with Harrison Ford, it has absolutely no real connection with the movie. If only the title had more relevance, I would give it five stars. For Blade Runner fans, a better buy would be the fantastic soundtrack from the movie by the famous Vangelis.
Overall, a good cd if you like the synthesizer genre or simply want some escapist and relaxing music.
