The Best Nek Album So Far.......2007-03-18

I've never had a Nek album before, so I started out with this. I was not disappointed in the least. Nek's style is romantic pop/rock, and it comes out clearly with each song. I had no idea he had been creating music since the early 90's, and it was great to hear a wide range of his songs on this album.

I understand some Italian, so my respect for his lyrics soared. Even if you can't understand the Italian language, don't be discouraged. It's still good music! If you like romantic ballads with a bit of attitude, pick up "L'anno Zero." You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Good NEK.......2007-01-11

I am not mad about Nek, but decided to give it a try buying this one. I think it is very good. A great choice if you want to have one Nek album.

Incredible.......2006-05-24

Well, in my humble opinion this is NEK's best album alongside with the other one called UNA PARTE DI ME (basically his newest one). Just for the record, as for the latter one, in my review I wrote that this album was out in two versions and the only thing that distinguishes them is only one word (look the review up and you shall have the difference - although both versions are incredible).

Now to this album, well, what can someone say except that it is incredible; from the song SEI SOLO TU (which also comes in another version with LAURA PAUSINI, not in this album) or the rest such as, LAURA NON C'E'. Either way, this album has a balanced mix from pop ballads to more `faster' pop songs. As for the singer, alongside with Eros, Laura Pausini and a few others, he belongs to the category of the most known Italian singers in the international scene (something you will also realize very soon when you listen to this album).

Highly recommended!!!

Permanently in my 6-disc CD changer.......2006-03-24

I think this CD has been in my 6-disc CD changer at least 90% of the 2+ years that I've owned it. Every time I take it out, it seems to somehow find its way back into the changer after a couple of weeks. I do own two other Nek CDs but this one is clearly the "Best of". Although it's hard to pick a favorite track off of this album, "In Te" is the one that probably gets me at the deepest level. Not only is the melody hauntingly emotional, the lyrics are even more powerful and understanding them can make one appreciate Nek as an artist even more. If you only buy one Nek CD, make it this one.

Laura non c'e indeed..........2005-08-11

L'Anno Zero contains the hits that you need from Nek's career. Of the new tracks you should ignore the facile "Almeno Stavolta," but "L'Anno Zero" is a keeper. As for the rest of the songs, you can't really go wrong. That is, EXCEPT for "Sei Solo Tu". This would have been an exceptional example of Italian rock at it's best. It comes from 2002's Le Cose Da Defendere (another fine Nek album for your collection), and on that album it was featured as a duet with Laura Pausini. However, for some inexplicable reason (probably licensing), here it does not include Pausini's vocals! The duet was the version that hit big in Italy, not this. Don't give us only half of one of Nek's biggest songs. It would be like having a greatest hits album of Kid Rock where only he sings "Picture". Quibbling aside, if you don't own most or any of Nek's previous albums this is a good choice.

SILLS GOES FOR BROKE -------- AND SHE TRIUMPHS.......2006-04-17

I, being a great admirer of Callas, Caballe', Sutherland, and Sills, cannot understand why people so vehemently bash one of them in favor of the other. This does nothing to further the interest of music, and it reduces great operatic singing to the level of ice hockey. "Anna Bolena" is an opera that requires a very special type of soprano. It is, essentially, a florid bel canto opera for a considerably heavier voice than that associated with such bel canto heroines such as those encountered in "Puritani", "Sonnambula", and "Lucia". A great "Anna Bolena" should also be able to command Norma and Rossini's "Semiramide". Beverly Sills had a basically small voice, and she herself has admitted repeatedly that her undertaking Donizetti's Three Queens (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Elizabeth in "Roberto Devereux) probably shortened her career by a decade. She was, of course, right. She certainly makes Anna Bolena a convincing vocal creation, and she sings with great conviction and involvement. But even so, there are moments when you know that she's pushing her resources to the virtual end of their endurance. She manufactures low chest tones that are completely out of allignment with the rest of her voice, and some of her top notes are nothing more than pitched screams. Of course, her passion and sincerity compensates for a lot of these deficiencies, and she emerges with a great success. I respect Sills, and have always felt that she was a little undone by her publicity machine, as well as the constant shadows of Callas, Sutherland, and Caballe. Truth to tell, all three had voices far more suited to these heavier bel canto roles. I'm not going to enter any fray and state any opinions here. Beverly Sills put forth a tremendous amount of skill and effort into roles like Anna Bolena, and she paid a vocal price, as one can hear on this recording. Still, I wouldn't be without this performance. Shirley Verrett is an outstanding Jane Seymour (she certainly could have sung Anna Bolena!), though I'm not sure that she and Sills blend all that well together. Whatever the case, let's give all these great sopranos a break and stop bashing them. My message to the bashers is: Callas, Sills, Caballe' & Sutherland have BEEN there and made it. What have YOU accomplished?

Will this awfully mellow coloratura chirper ever stop shrieking? Sills couldn't fit the role of Anna less! Maria Callas, La Divina, has always been, and will always remain the role's owner.
Incidentally, how can some people blatantly dare show their absolute ignorance? How can somebody call -and get away with it- Callas' soloists Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, Giulietta Simionato, and Gianni Raimondi "second rate"??? I guess you've neither listened to any of them nor heard of their superb and much acclaimed qualities as musicians!!!

The best set available - wonderful.......2005-03-27

This is one of my favourite operas. I have heard the Callas, Sunderland (CD and DVD performances) and Gruberova (not to mention some live recordings).

Callas was breathtaking in her live performance from the 50's (especially in Act 3) BUT the sound quality is very poor indeed and the other soloists are second rate. The performance was also heavily cut. I only wish she had recorded the whole opera in the studio, instead of one or two arias.

Sunderland was well past her prime by the time she recorded her performance on CD. Her diction, never a strong point for her, is particularly 'woolly' and she has problems sustaining the higher register without strain. It is a pity she didn't record it much earlier in her career. Boynage conducts in a pedestrian manner too (compare the overture from Boynage and Rudel, Rudel makes the overture exciting and vibrant. Boynage conducts a somewhat flat and one dimensional rendition).

Gruberova's recording on CD is from a live performance and is truly aweful in places. I actually think it is one of the worst performances of anything I have ever heard 'recorded'. Don't touch it with a barge pole.

Then there is Sills performance. OK, I wish the voice was a little heavier at times but her singing is, as usual, beautiful. You feel that Anna Bolena is a role she loved, she conveys dramatic sincerity throughout. Rudel conducts his orchestral forces with such energy. Indeed, he is a major selling point of this set for me. He injects the performance with flair and gusto. Verrett, Burrows and Plishka don't put a foot wrong. A wonderful performance. I love this recording above all the others. Buy it. This set leaves the competition standing, (although, if you can tolerate the appalling sound, Callas' performance is fantastic too, however overall this set is far superior).

I'm sorry if I hurt anyone. I was just so mad and angry because Callas got bashed so many times by a Sills-Fanatic. I deeply apologise. Sills has a very beautiful voice, one of the best lyric coloratura voices out there. I hope Bev's fans will forgive me. This is one of the best Annas ever.

A Sills-Fanatic keeps bashing Callas with one star reviews in a row! I warned him that our patience is at its end! Now we'll retaliate! Sills is AWFUL as Anna Bolena, thin, sour, glassy and fake with no middle. A stupid coloratura chirper. Stop singing, Sills! My ears hurt, stop shrieking!

Basically, the same as Nomad but Great!.......2006-10-02

This album (that has an overwhelming sleeve) is basically the same as Nomad, one of the previous works of Paul Di'Anno, but with three songs added (the last three ones) and lacks one: Intro. That doesn't mean that this album doesn't worth each buck paid for it. Is a great album, hard, a great work from Paul Di'Anno (personally, the best vocalist that Iron Maiden could have in its history). Despite being almost the same album than Nomad (an album I own), I bought this again just to hear the songs remastered. The songs sound so actual and timeless that is a real pleassure to hear them revitalized.

I think this is a good cd. I love the title track! The video is cool. Can't go wrong with the living dead. But, there are other good tracks on it, as well. I can't complain about anything, because I have nothing to compare it too. This is my first cd from him. Even if it wasen't, I would still like it. So, buy it!

This is first class Italian Baroque music at it's best!.......2005-03-07

The timbre of the organs is perfect. The spaciousness is far perplexing, dude. Plus, it will freak out your grandparents because this was well before their time. The vocals are shiny as well... Ok, let's say not all grandparents. As for me and my house... "If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it!"

"At about 16.98 USD, I could safely say... I got more than my money's worth!"

Some of These Are CLASSIC songs.......2004-09-24

MattC : I disagree vociferously with most of the reviews. Some of these songs, although done in the 90s--would have been classics in the 80s. Awesome songs like the pounding "What D'Ya Want," "Big Beat, No Heart" and "I've Had Enough" as well as the great driving songs "No Repair," "Let Your Body Rock," "Don't Rock the Boat," and "What Am I Gonna Do" are hard-driving, anthemic, kickarse pump-up songs. These aforementioned songs are incredible and they pump out of my stereo before work or working out or going out on the town. These songs come out strutting and are sure to electrify every time.

Why Paul, Why?.......2004-09-04

I remember when I was 13 years old and I got my first iron maiden cd for X-mas, "Best of the beast". By far, the tracks which featured Paul Di'anno were my favorites. Soon after, I purchased all the Iron Maiden cds.

I've not purchased many other albums that featured Paul Di'anno, but I got this one, and I regret it. This album is funny, in a weird masochistic way. When I listen to this cd, all that comes into my head is "Will make music for food!". There is some real terrible cover songs, some AOR sounding songs, generic ballady type stuff, and the 92837982 rehash of iron maiden tracks which Paul seems to like to put onto every cd he releases. From what I gather from reading his book, "The Beast", he was most likely drunk or high on cocaine while recording these. It shows.

Please look over this CD and track down "Paul Di'anno's battlezone" cds. They are much better than this filth.

Not What You Expect.......2003-11-17

This is not what you would expect , but it isnt all horrible. Many people rate this album becuase they go out and buy this becuase they want to hear Iron Maiden songs , but this is a solo release. It is more Classic Rock based , and a solid album to boot.

Good Rock Album, but not a good Metal Album.......2001-07-06

If you're expecting a smashing heavy metal album like the ones that Paul Di'anno usually makes, this really isn't the one.

But, if you are looking for a good rock album, including slower hits, THIS IS THE ONE!!!

Slow rock musics like 'searching for you', sang by the legendary voice sounds really GREAT!! I think that this album can dissapoint some Paul Dianno fans, but it is a great album for general rock music fans, people who enjoy sounds like Brian Adams or Zuccero will really love this album.

For the metal fans there are only a few musics taken from one of Dianno's live shows.
