Although this collection intends to transport the soul, it has a tremendously potent low-end depth to it that earns high marks indeed in the worlds of vocal and liturgical music. I am the producer of this CD and also of "SACRED TREASURES III: Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond" as well as "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. One reviewer complained about the omission of the final (loud and fast) part of the Cherubic hymns, saying this is the best part, but I completely disagree! I feel that the slow "adagio" sections are by far the most beautiful parts, and that is what you will hear on these CDs.

Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymns" on this CD prescribe) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these albums, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks from Russia"!

A Soviet version of Russian music.......2006-05-29

I admit to some strong bias here, having sung on the recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy available here from the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. I was in that choir for five years, and our conductor's view of how to properly interpret Russian music became my own.

Because of Stalin's efforts to cleanse the country of the influence of religion, many musicians and composers were sent to Siberia. They were replaced with those from peasant backgrounds. The result was a huge change in how classical Russian music was performed, becoming less subtle, more interested in brute power and flash.

This recording features a massive and powerful choir. But the listener mostly hears a series of vowel sounds, with the consonants lost in the shuffle. Dynamic range is not as large as it could be. Phrasing is largely absent and we hear a steady wall of sound instead. Precision of rhythm is spotty, what consonants we do hear are frequently smeared. Pitch and richness of tone are good, but on high notes, inevitably given the size of the choir, some members strain.

Having performed and recorded Tchaikovsky's Liturgy I am very familiar with the piece. But listening to this recording of excerpts from it I sometimes barely recognized it as the same work. Tchaikovsky gives us great artistry, frequently crecendos and decrecendos on a single phrase. Each choral voice comes and goes like a wave, not all together like a tsunami in all but a few places. The balance of voices is constantly moving.

I encourage you to listen to the samples available here of the Russian Chamber Chorus's recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy, compare the same pieces. This recording is more a Vegas neon version of this great artwork than the fine art it deserves to be shown as. James Oestreich, the New York Times critic, put the Russian Chamber Chorus recording at #4 on his top ten list of classical releases for 2001, and said that if you had not heard it "You only think you know Tchaikovsky."

I hope you give the real Russian classical tradition a listen. It deserves your time, and it will pay you back with a huge amount of pleasure.

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. It Doesn't Get any Better!!!.......2006-10-09

Having collected a decent library of sacred music over the years I can readily attest that this is the best sacred music CD that I own, my second favorite being a requiem chant by the monks of Solesmes. Further, upon listening to this CD everyone I know seems to respond to it with the same enthusiasm. Track 10 is my personal favorite, but there are no weak pieces here. The entire production hangs together well. Can't recommend it enough to novice or seasoned liturgical music listener.

Lost and Found Classics.......2005-06-08

This album was quite an education for me since I knew of only a small handful of the more famous artists such as Ben E. King, Otis Redding, Arthur Conley and Irma Thomas. I would come to be more familiar with Doris Duke, Eddie and Ernie and Wendy Rene through my purchases of further volumes in the Deep Soul Treasures collection. It was a real ear opener to hear the haunting,original version of "Go Now" by Bessie Banks after being raised on the hit,pop version by The Moody Blues. Another pleasant discovery was The Soul Children who were musical protegees of Isaac Hayes, who along with his songwriting partner David Porter, wrote three of the 25 songs on this album. Arthur("Sweet Soul Music") Conley, himself the protegee of Otis Redding sings Otis' beautiful,pleading "Let Nothing Seperate Us". George Perkins' plaintive, yearning "Cryin'In The Streets" made the hair on my arms stand up. This is one moving, not to mention, catchy song. Melody is not often the strong point of Deep Soul, as the focus is on the simple arrangements and Soulful vocals, but a lot of these songs will take up permanent residence in your brain after a few listens. One of my favorites is the closing song by the obscure Lisa Richards, whose angelic vocals on "Let's Take a Chance", will make you weep with joy. It is such pure, simple, ear candy, that I can't believe it wasn't a hit. It is a real testimony to the talent of even the most obscure artist here, that they can be mixed in with Otis Redding and Carla Thomas and Johnny Adams and blend in so seamlessly. There was such an abundance of great Soul and R&B in the sixties and seventies that we are still catching up with it, and thanks to compilations like this one, we will.

Deep Soul Treasures Volume 1 blew me away. This one is not quite as good, although there are some nice tracks on it.

mercy!4 times i've tryed to get these dave godin's deep soul treasures n finally got them, let me precisely make strong emphasis on these collections, that every man woman n child n beast should be able to hear these fabulous recordings, amen!!i sat all by myself when i first played them n i cried, wept,screamed n moaned,with emotional outbursts, especially the most beautiful recording of all time,go now the soul stirring, miss bessie banks n anyone but you, the breathtaking miss barbara west, those two alone is well worth the weight in gold!!keep on keeping on, more more more more, thank you:j.h.

the previous reviewer would be well advised to stick to otis/sam & dave best of compilations.

but for those with a wider ranging appreciation for deep southern soul, this is a tasty collection. a step down from volume 1, and perhaps not quite as good as volume 3, this set is nevertheless brilliant.

there are plenty of great non-hit singles from the stax/volt catalogue. if you have the first stax singles box, most of these will be superfluous, but it's great to hear them in a new context. particularly strong are the soul children and ruby johnson tracks. but then, the wendy rene and carla thomas tracks aren't too shabby either.

another great track is the classic toussaint mccall slow burner, "nothing takes the place of you." if you don't have this elsewhere, it's inclusion alone justifies the purchase of this cd.

"losin' boy" by eddie giles is another winner.

of course, everyone will have their favorites, and with 25 tracks, there is a veritable treasure trove to pick from. go ahead and buy all three volumes today.

the glowing reviews for this and the rest of the godin series are false . this has 1 or 2 half-decent cuts and the rest of the tracks were rare 'cause they're lousy. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

How could I have missed this cd?.......2004-06-21

How could I have possibly missed this cd? I thought that I was quite an afficionado of soul music, but I have been humbled. I have been brought to my knees. The pulse of soul music is in Dave Godin's fingers. This collection of songs is the reason that I've continued to return to soul music throughout the years. And after listening to this collection, I will never stray far again. I've been purchasing Northern Soul collections for the obscurities, but this cd is in a class of its own.

this is some of the greatest "unknown" soul music ever recorded. If you get this CD plus the "Soul Gems" CD, you've got all the great soul you're ever gonna need......

These are real treasures.......2002-03-04

I ordered this CD but wasn't sure if the songs would really be all that great. I have a lot of soul music and consider my self quite an expert. Boy was I surprised. Dave Godin is the man. He has found wonderful gems that get better and better with each listening. I have listened to this CD three times over the last few days. I have Vol 2 and 3 still go go.

If you really like deep soul, this is the CD to get.

Dave Godin's Goldmine.......2001-08-24

In my mind Godin rhymes with Goldmine - there is no other name for such a "1001 Nights-Cave" full of riches,long forgotten and known only to serious collectors.I find very touching that Godin's love for soul music did not diminish with decades and he was ready to share his passion with new generations of listeners (who surprisingly made this compilation bestseller).It sounds almost like happy end,considering that these songs were never big hits when originaly released and the only explanation why "Showdown" (for example) did not reach mass audience could be the explosion of soul sound back in 1960's,when big names simply eclipsed singers like Kenny Carter.This CD demands careful listening,and its not easy to select favourites - my first reaction was actually to return CD in shop,as I was not prepared for such a exhibition of raw emotions (later I properly cryed in my beer,while listening).Excellent liner notes just round up this exciting compilation whose main purpose for me is to discover less known names and open a few more doors in the world of music I would not known otherwise.

The great reviews are phony hype. This is terrible stuff except for a few cuts. Don't be tricked by seeing Irma Thomas on this disc. Almost everyone else singing is unknown cause they did not have any talent or were recorded on a bad day.DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. same for the rest of the series.

More Lost Treasures.......2004-03-18

The Deep Soul Treasures surpasses itself yet again with this third volume of obscure artists and lost classics. A chart position does not define the greatness of a song. The hits are just what is shoved down the throats of the collective public over the airwaves. I knew only three tracks off this collection before buying it-James Brown's mournful "Lost Someone",Etta James' slow burning classic "I'd Rather Go Blind" and Rick James'
classic and classy duet with Smokey Robinson-"Ebony Eyes". The other 22 cuts held for me the thrill of discovery. Some of these artists weren't great but cut at least one classic song and deserve their music to be heard. I recognise some of these artists from previous Deep Soul editions-Toussaint McCall, Eddie and Ernie, Bessie Banks, Doris Duke, Irma Thomas and each one does a completely different style of song on this one. An album such as this of lost classics is a real treat to the Soul music lover who thinks he has heard it all. More,please!!

WHILE I HAVE SOME OF THE CUTS ON THIS CD ON OTHER COMPILATRIONS, THERE ARE ALSO SOME RARE GEMS HERE (EDDIE AND ERNIE, BESSIE BANKS, SYL JOHNSON). VOLUME ONE WAS FANTASTIC, VOLUME TWO, NOT QUITE AS GOOD, BUT VOLUME THREE IS JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE. GET IT.

Oh, not in the sense of #1's as many of these stars are obscure artists who never got the recognition so righteously deserved! I
went to high school in Harlem, N.Y.C. at the height of the Motown era and never heard of many of these artists and while that may be the case, I'm forever indebted to Mr. Godin for exposing me to such treasures...from the Knight Brothers to Bessie Banks to the Incredibles and Eddy & Ernie, these three volumes are among the best soul music available anywhere on Earth! I started with Volume three and imediately purchased Volumes one & two! No decent soul collection is without these three CD's and they say more is coming! I, for one, just can't wait!

Another Golden collection of Northern Soul.......2000-12-22

At the outset it has to be said that you should check out the excellent reviews for Volumes one and two of this series on the Amazon lists. Volume Three is an equal to the others, and depends on the collecting fanaticism of Dave Godin and the largely unsung Ady Croasdell. The tracks are all part of an English phenomonen known as "Northern Soul" and represent a wide cross section of largely unknown American performances. There are well known songs such as the Maxine Brown,Irma Thomas and Etta James tracks, but the delight is that they are mixed with complete unknowns (Robert Ramsey/Barbara and the Browns) and "B" sides like Bessie Banks "It sounds like my baby" the original "B" side of "Go Now".There are also two absolute classic golden Gems. The first is "Thanks for Yesterday" by Eddie and Ernie ( who seem to be favourites of Godin) and the magical "I'm missing you" by Loretta Williams from the JOTIS label. Don't just buy this one - buy all three! There are more volumes to come!

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12

Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

This is a collection of "rarities from the vaults of Del-Fi Records". Songs are in a variety of styles, some of which are hard to categorize. There are a lot of instrumentals and some songs with vocals. Some of the tracks are pretty peculiar, but they are all interesting. Give it a listen.

SWEET AND BITTER SOUL.......2005-01-08

Like the three previous volumes, this CD takes you through a littany of lesser known and more popular soul hits. The known songs, like Clarence Carter's "Slip Away" and The Miracles "The Tracks Of my Tears" benefit from being mixed in with obscure tracks like "Temptation'Bout To Get Me" by The Knight Brothers and "My Baby" by Garnett Mimms. Sadly, Dave Godin, who compiled these four volumes of magic, passed away last year, so this will probably be the last Deep Soul compilation we will see. Dave Godin (who was British) was probably the best friend American Soul music ever had, and a lot of these artists would not have gotten this second chance at being heard if it were not for him. Thank you, Sir ,for bringing Americans their own music and helping us to see the overlooked magic of our own musical culture.This man truly loved Deep Soul and his taste was impeccable, and so we benefit from his knowledge of some of the best Soul music of all time.
