After releasing three widely acclaimed discs and receiving a plethora of awards and accolades, Jars of Clay return to their roots on The Eleventh Hour, revisiting the guitar-driven pop formula that launched their careers. Gone is the experimentation of If I Left the Zoo, replaced with more direct approaches, like the pounding rock of "Revolution" and the acerbity of "Whatever She Wants." Matt Odmark's fine guitar work and Dan Haseltine's Everyman vocals resonate with gut-wrenching soul searching and joyous redemption, as the haunting doubts of "Silence" are answered by the hope of the closing "The Edge of Water." Once again, Jars of Clay have released an insightful masterpiece on the human spirit and those in-between days that define our struggle for faith, and it stands as a road marker for just how far these four talented lads have come. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The rarest type of Christian music.......2007-04-07

An excellent album, with at least four very good songs on it. Jars have no business being included with most other Christian music. That category is almost entirely devoted to songs about faith. Jars' songs are songs about doubt. You are unlikely to run across another "Christian music" piece as bleak, questioning and emotionally powerful as "Silence." Buy the album and hear the songs for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece........2006-03-10

This is their best yet.

It was Produced by Jars of Clay, Mixed by Jack Joseph Puig, Mastered by Bob Ludwig.

A Masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars ok, but not really.......2006-01-20

this cd is not the good old jars of clay that I know. it's kind of weird and its just not them. i really only like "these ordinary days", but the rest are just ok. theyre not as acoustic and doesn't sound jars of clayish.

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2005-06-21

Let me say that first and foremost Jars of Clay is my favorite band and I have been listening to them for nearly a decade. The first three albums were superb, and Who we are Instead is also an excellent album. This album is definately JoC's most bland and cookie cut album. The biggest problem I have with this album is that it's song are of a typical mainstream christian idealism, a category that a lot of contemporary christian artists have unfortunately been emmersed in. Don't get me wrong, songs about God are more than encouraged, I love Worlds Apart, Much afraid, Hymn, and just about any other jars of clay song. But there was a level of uncertainty, passion, and doubt in Jars of Clay's songs. The songs on this album are, like I said earlier, christian cookie cut. There is nothing special about the lyical content of this album. I also have to say that revolution is one of my least favorite jars of clay songs. A song that basically states over and over again, hey, you don't have to conform to the rest of society to become a revolution. Weak lyics, it is very obvious that you need not conform to change stuff, but it stops there, it would also seem obvious that one would be required not to conform to society to be any influence to another person. I'm dissapointed to be writing such a lack luster, whiny review about my favorite band. If you like cookie cutter christian songs, get this album, also be sure to pick up Avalon too.

5 out of 5 stars Polished and Perfect.......2005-03-19

As another reviewer said, The Eleventh Hour, is Jars of Clay's first polished album. You can tell they really spent time getting this one "perfect" and it is! DISAPPEAR is a great starting song, with electrifying guitar sound. ELEVENTH HOUR is truly a masterpiece, with wonderful lyrics, melody, and very cool keyboard effects. WHATEVER SHE WANTS is their only non-God related song. A very good, darker and louder song that is about a dependent relationship. SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL really is beautiful in itself. The poignant lyrics mirrored the deepest desire of my heart.REVOLUTION talks about how "you don't need to fight or make yourself belong, to be a revolution" with fun lyrics and heavy rock. This album is a different sound than the previous one, like all of Jars of Clay's cds! They each have a different sound. With the Eleventh Hour they decided to go with an arena rock sound, and they succeeded.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Magnum.......2007-03-17

How do you even begin to describe an album like Magnum's 1983 release The Eleventh Hour? It's hard enough just trying to explain just what Magnum's sound is all about. The term "pomp rock" is close, but does it really do Magnum, which has elements of so many classic rock bands from Deep Purple and Rainbow to Uriah Heep and Genesis, justice?

However you classify them, Magnum is one of the finest classic rock bands around, and they were in top form on the Eleventh Hour, an album that blended pomp and art rock with strong pop sensibilities. It was equal parts Uriah Heep, Styx, and REO Speedwagon, as odd as that sounds. If you're into any (or all) of those bands, you'll probably understand. The songs are dramatic and bombastic, but are highly melodic as well. They're undeniably rock songs, but also have a strong pop flavor to them.

I'd recommend this album to just about anyone who enjoys classic rock. Magnum is a tragically overlooked band, and once you hear them, you're hooked. The Eleventh Hour is probably the perfect album to start with, as it really represents what Magnum was all about. There isn't a weak moment on the entire album, and if I were to name the best all-time Magnum songs, at least two-thirds of the songs on The Eleventh Hour would make the list.

NOTE: Castle/Sanctuary reissued The Eleventh Hour in 1999 and gave it a much needed digital remastering.

NOTE 2: Castle/Sanctuary re-reissued The Eleventh Hour yet again in 2005, this time adding a second disc worth of demos, outtakes, and other alternate versions of songs from the Eleventh Hour. If you haven't yet picked up a copy of this album, this is the best one available.

4 out of 5 stars superb melodic hard rock.......2003-10-20

This is Magnum's fifth album(Marauder Live included)and the last to feature the unique Kex Gorin on drums. It's also the last album in the "old" Magnum style ( read non-commercial and with lots of breaks and bridges). The songs are all masterpieces, but guitarist Tony Clarkin tried to produce the album and didn't pay much attention to the drum-sound. That's why I give it four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Not enough stars.......2001-06-15

When You try to explain some one about symphonic and melodic metal but not loud, not even hard, You just have to start with these guys. It's a shame that Clarkin had been lossing the touch with the time but at least He left 3 masterpieces "Kingdome of madness", "Chase the dragon" and this one ( no order ). Always strong, with the perfect singer for this music ( who else but Catley ), all metal fans should try this work.

5 out of 5 stars A top performance!.......2001-03-08

Eleventh Hour is definately one of the best Magnum albums. This is symphonic metal at its absolute best, and Magnum's second best after Chase the Dragon. Magnum albums previous to these two might sound a little dated and the later ones could maybe be called a touch commercial, but Eleventh Hour and Chase the Dragon is top of the line. An absolute must for all hard rock and metal fans.

5 out of 5 stars There's still time for change...Listen Closely.......2003-07-01

The Eleventh Hour has become one of my favorite new age albums. Mars Lasar uses many great sounds in it and he has created a great album. However it is the only album I own by him but I have heard from reading other reviews that his album "Karma" is supposed to have similar sounds in it.

The CD lasts over an hour and has 16 songs on it. When I read the back of the CD I saw that this album was dedicated to hope for a world in crisis and in my opinion that is a very serious issue. Anyway, I'll mention a few songs from the album. "The Eleventh Hour" is a great song to start off the album. It has great keyboard sounds and also it has a few voices in it. "Plateau Of The Gods" is another one of my favorite songs. It starts out soft and gets louder towards the end, it also featured guitars in it. One song I thought that could really exist in the future was "Cellular City". I would picture a future city in space. "Hidden Crater" was one that was a little bit more on the dark side. It has great keyboard sounds in it with a few whispers here and there. One song I thought was a bit unusual was "City Jungle" it had strange keyboards with a lot of water sounds in it. That's all the songs I am going to talk about but mostly all of them are worth the listen.

If you liked The Eleventh Hour you might want to try "Olympus". It is different than The Eleventh Hour mostly because of the different sounds he uses. Well that's all I have to say!

Good-Bye!!

4 out of 5 stars Communism..........2003-05-10

First time in my life I paid for a word of communism and a burp. The rest of the CD is not bad, but it does not deserve the top position which usually is 5 stars, sometimes 6.

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD!.......2002-10-04

Another great CD from Mars Lasar. Just like Mars's previous album Olympus Mars makes great keyboard sounds. I picked this CD up at BORDERS only knowing Hidden Crater from the radio. When I started listening to it I thought it was great the CD is good from the beginning to the end. On the eleventh hour the 16 songs are about hope for a world in crisis. Every song on the album I thought was good but my favorite song still was Hidden Crater for the darkness in the song. If you like new age music then this is the album for you. Believe me you will not be DISAPPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars New Age's finest hour.......2002-06-03

I have been a heavy-duty New Age lover since I was like 8 or 9 years old. It was Mars Lasar's 'The Eleventh Hour' that eventually made New Age one of my favorite genres of music.

I at first thought New Age was just a kind of sleepy music kind of genre that seemed more like boring meditation music but The Eleventh Houre blew all that perception away. Many other albums since then have proven that New Age can be a very energetic genre, sometimes even more danceable than the antiquated, unlistenable R&B garbage of today.

In fact this CD sounds more like music from the future, like from 2093 instead of it's release year 1993.

Where most New Age CDs are mostly pleasant serene music, The Eleventh Hour is an album that is actually socially conscious. I might sound a bit odd but I often compare this to Janet Jacksons powerful 1989 masterpiece Rhythm Nation 1814 because this album is just as moving and awe-inspiring even though these two albums are from totally different genres. It shows that all genres can express messages.

The Eleventh Hour not only is energetic it is also a kaleidoscope of many sounds and the songs all have a distinctive sound ranging from the disturbing title track to jazzy like in Why Violate Every Law OF Nature to even fun like in Live at the Eleventh Hour to the tear-jerking yet joyous The Gift and Cathedral Waltz. No other album in my opinion stimulates so much imagination, not even the Eleventh Hours successor 11:02 even though that album comes close. Strangely the only other album that I compare this album to is Karma because while 11:02 was great, Karma has the kind of melodies that this album contains. 11:02 was more on the creepy space side where Karma had the peculiar melodies and the natural sounds of this album except Karma is far more ancient in sound.

To go into a detailed review of the songs to me would not be enough to do this extraordinary album justice because this album is like nothing that any other New Age artist maybe except Patrick O'Hearn my other favorite New Age meistro, can even dream of creating. It's that good. In fact it has even been powerful enough to shape the way I look at the world.

This is an album of my lifetime. It's one of those album I would buy again and again as I wear out copies over my lifetime.

And by the way this is a 19 year old who absolutely despises the horrofic gender-bashing R&B of today.

Give me the frightening darkness of Hidden Crater or In The Den anytime over any of the sunny cheap R&B trash of Destinys Child or Ja Rule.

Believe me this is an album to live by.

5 out of 5 stars Hours of listening pleasure.......2001-08-16

What a wonderful CD this is. Very thought-provoking, yet it's also something you can just lie back and listen to, letting the music wash over you. This CD spans many musical styles (I hesitate to say genres, because it is all clearly New Age)

The standout piece on this is "In the Den," with it's mixture of rhythm and message. "Plateau of the Gods" is wonderfully cosmic in scope, bringing a space-like listening sensation.

The CD lasts over 72 minutes. With a mediocre CD, that would be almost cringe-inducing. Here, though, almost every minute is wonderful.

This will be repeated in your CD player many times.

The EAE keeps growing -- starting with 6 (3 acoustic players and 3 electronic/computer processors), it is now up to 11 with the addition of Richard Barrett and Paul Obermayer since MEMORY/VISION. Barry Guy is missing for the first time, replaced by Adam Linson on double-bass, so the acoustic players are now 5 -- Evan Parker on soprano sax, Philipp Wachsmann on violin, Paul Lytton on percussion, Agusti Fernandez on piano, and Linson on bass. There are now 6 players on the "electro" side, plus Wachsmann and Lytton doing double-duty for a total of 8.

The disc opens with "Shadow Play" (17'29"), a solo piece for Parker with Casserly, Ryan and Prati adding electronic processing. "The Eleventh Hour" (about 64') has 5 parts, and like MEMORY/VISION has several sections featuring one of the acoustic players. Part 1 features Wachsmann's violin, Part 2 features Lytton's percussion, Part 3 features Fernandez's piano, Part 4 finally includes a feature for Parker's sax toward the end, part of which is a slow, lovely, lyrical solo that you would never guess was Evan Parker in a blind sound test, and Part 5 is nearly all electronic, a very effective pulsating sphere of sound based largely on low piano notes and high keening sax notes.

There are now four EP/EAE albums, the first two recorded in the studio (TOWARD THE MARGINS and DRAWN INWARD -- see my reviews) and the most recent two recorded live. Separated by a several year gap, the recent pair has developed a somewhat different, more contemplative sound than the more forceful earlier pair. THE ELEVENTH HOUR is the most ECM-ish sounding yet, slower and more spacious, more lyrical in places, with more crystalline solo lines from the acoustic instruments. I recommend DRAWN INWARD as the best if you're only going to hear one of these fine recordings, but they're all superb.

The liner notes are incredibly sparse, basically just three photos and the list of players, but there are some informative notes on the ECM site that should have been included in the booklet.

      5 out of 5 stars a great collection!.......2003-04-04

Universal Congress Of's second release on Enemy, consists of the same great rhythmic combinations of Joe Baiza and Steve Moss with a fresh and funky New Orleans rhythm section of Steve Gaeta and A. P. Gonzalez. Bringing back a collective spirit from the earlier days, gliding over yet another hurdle in artistic development allowing ideas to flow freely, combining established concepts with slightly off beat twists. The 11th Hour Shine-On comes from a term meaning bailing out of a commitment at the last possible moment-- something Joe's learned alot about in recent years. this is a great album to buy
