Michael Hedges's first solo album in four years not only reaffirms his status as an acoustic guitar virtuoso but also reveals a growing mastery of percussion, keyboards, and flute. Unfortunately, his instrumental and compositional skills are too often obscured by opaque vocals and esoteric lyrics. The eight songs and two instrumentals reflect a quest for spiritual and psychic wholeness, but Hedges's guitar evokes that pursuit far more eloquently than his voice. For example, "Sister Soul" has a long instrumental introduction where his melodic variations and competing rhythms create a stirring drama of yearning. Once the vocals enter, however, nearly two minutes into the song, they undermine the tension rather than reinforcing it. The new age jargon about "the sister soul deep inside of me" has none of the freshness of the guitar work. Too many numbers on the album suffer from a similar dynamic. --Geoffrey Himes

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Not his best work.......2000-07-18
Hedges liked to try new things, but never really sounded "New Agey" except for this album. There are a couple of good songs, but if you are looking to buy your first Hedges album, you might try Aerial Boundries, Breakfast in the Field, or Oracle. Live on the Double Planet is also fantastic. This is the only Hedges disc I own that really never impressed me.
What can be said?.......1998-09-20
This is a wonderful album - from the heart and soul of a truly gifted artist. Yes, his vocals have an unpolished sound - and it only embellishes the brutal honesty and integrity of his work... I think the lyrics are esoteric only to those who lack sufficient imagination. New age? I hate that description. Honest? Yes, very! That is why we love you so, Michael. And to those who understand, no explanation is necessary.
Honest, unpolished vocals , mature craftmanship, brilliant!.......1998-08-22
Well, Hedges was the most incredible guitarist I have ever known, and his death is still a numb spot in many lives, including mine. This work, another vocal experiment for Hedges, is far and away a better piece than his earlier "Watching My Life Go By," which seemed to be halfway betwen his earlier phenomenal guitar work and his later musical explorations. While some reviewers have been distracted by Michael's vocals, I found them refreshing and unpolished, honest, and unwashed. Yes--unwashed, a good word for it. "Sister Soul" and "You Can Have Anything You Want" are wonderful sets, each evoking a different mood and display moving texts with intricate, if subtle, music. "Sister," for example, is an wonderful chordal piece where the right hand moves in a simple down-up-down pattern while the left hand fingers seperate melodic lines on the fretboard. It is interesting that the vocals come in after a two-minute instrumental with "Time to talk,/It's time I speak." Well put together, as if the music has to now give way to the voice, the carrier of the message that the music has been hinting at. Besides "Aerial Boundaries," this is my favorite Hedges album, and ought to be a fine addition to any collection.

A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21
Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.
Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)
Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.
To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

Customer Reviews:
Tepid performance.......2004-04-12
This recording has wonderful, clear sound quality, but the performances, and especially the conducting, are not up to par. Jessye Norman sings everything beautifully with rich tone, and sounds magnificent in her two arias, but she is a lifeless Aïda. She pastes on Aïda's emotions. Her portrayal is too shallow. She sang this performance when she was still a lirico-spinto, and not yet a full-blown dramatic soprano. Her soft high notes are pretty, but hardly breathtaking and she cuts some forte high notes short, like the high B-flat on the word "Ah!" in "Ritorna vincitor". Pedro Lavirgen is a squillo-less Radamès. At least he puts a little more emotion into his singing than Norman does. His "Celeste Aïda" is surprisingly effective and well sung. His high notes are secure, but he shamelessly milks "Sacerdote, io resto a te" by holding on to one of the high G's for an inordinately long amount of time. Fiorenza Cossotto is in great voice, but very surprising for her, she is very subdued in this performance. She is not dull by any other mezzo's standards, but she is dull by her own standards. Her Judgement Scene with the priests is not included in this highlights CD. Her high notes are rock-solid, which at least partially makes up for her less-than-total dramatic commitment. The baritone who sings Aïda's father is serviceable, but by no means memorable. The conducting of Nino Sanzogno is lifeless. He uses the same, moderate tempo for every scene. When the tempo should speed up and be dramatic, like at the end of the Amneris/Radamès duet, he lets the tempo drag. Some of the brass playing is less than spectacular, the mentioned duet being an example. The trumpet playing in the Triumphal March is mediocre; many of the notes sound like they are about to crack. The sound, as mentioned earlier, is superb. There is no audience noise except for applause, and no tape hiss. The orchestra and soloists could have been miked a bit closer, but they are very audible throughout.
This recording could have been great, but an atmosphere of lethargy pervades it, with Sanzogno's conducting being particularly dead.
Wonderful Perfromance.......2000-01-06
As a Jessye fan, I was very excited to come across this recording. It's a live performance. with excellent recording quality, and the performance is fantastic. Cosotto as Amneris is simply electric, and the rest of the cast is superb. One or two flat notes do not mar my respect for jessye's interpretation, but could explain why this was not recorded by a major label.
