"Ambitious" is a word that's inevitably used by music critics to describe Ottmar Liebert's Opium. Spread over two CDs, which also feature text and a variety of photographs, Opium clocks in at more than 125 minutes and affords the German-born guitarist (today a resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico) the broadest possible canvas to express his fascinating artistic vision, one that eludes a concise or simple explanation. Nominated for a Grammy (Best New Age Recording) in 1997, Opium comprises one CD subtitled "Wide-Eyed," which features a fairly straightforward presentation of Liebert's elegantly vibrant approach to flamenco-influenced acoustic guitar, and an even more intriguing second CD, "Dreaming." On this disc, Liebert and members of his Luna Negra band have room to indulge in various sonic explorations, probing unfamiliar atmospheric terrain that only a few other globally minded guitar adventurers, such as Steve Tibbetts, have previously charted--only without the feedback Tibbetts often favors. The results are almost always mind-expanding and often quite lovely. The moments when he intertwines electric guitar into his work, such as "Butterfly and Juniper" from disc 1 and "Chi-Wahwah Beauty" on disc 2, are especially satisfying. Other flamenco albums will strike brighter sparks than Opium, but few will equal its sustained, magical glow. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Ottmar Liebert.......2007-07-30

I am replacing some of my classic albums (cassette)with CDs - this was a major item and it met my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars The reasons for this being 5 stars!.......2006-10-04

Enthralling
Mesmorizing
Unbelievable
Magical
Soothing
Creative beyond belief

This CD is more Eastern (Asia, India, Himalayas, etc.) than Southwestern, but don't let that stop you. Buy it, love it, enjoy it, it's one of a literal handful of CDs that I would NOT be without, in my life.

5 out of 5 stars A Magificent Piece of Art .......2006-04-25

Having Been a fan for flamenco and spanish guitar music and having listened to various top notch artists, I had always ranked Ottmar Liebert as an inspiring soul. His music has its own distinct flavor. 'Ambitious' is what I would use to describe Libert's music in general. This album ,however, is different. It's the piece of work that defines Ottmar Liebert. Listening to this album transforms you to a different level of alertness. A level at which you're a step closer to being in a peaceful dream yet can still reflect on reality. It has a sedating, soothing edge to it. A rather "narcotizing" effect .. such is the magic of "OPIUM" !

5 out of 5 stars Sickkkk !!!!.......2005-09-20

Ottmar rocks !!!! Very groovy album. Great to do meditation or yoga to .

5 out of 5 stars Ambitious and evocative.......2002-04-12

Listening to Liebert's music since the early, bright melodies of "Nouveau Flamenco," I have always anticipated his next exploration into flamenco. "Opium" plays like a sonic trajectory through the senses and places Liebert has been. It's all been packed into a double CD that unfurls like an exotic Persian carpet.

Clearly, as a musician, Liebert has picked up influences from the Far East and North Africa, to name but two. Yet the guitar is still at the forefront of most of songs. In contrast to his other work, "Opium" ranges far and wide and feels like a long journey to someplace strange and intoxicating. There's so much to appreciate, both as a whole and as individual pieces. There's a fair deal of electric Santana-style guitar alongside the acoustic, mixed in with synthesizer, bells, percussion and other effects, and the music falls into two aural categories: insistent and languid. Both styles are mesmerizing.

Curiously, the initial CD release included a visual format for 1995-era Macs and PCs: pop in either of the discs, and you'd get to see (and manipulate) some suitably New-Age video effects to each track. Since I dumped my Mac 9500 clone, I can't seem to make it work on the all-powerful G-5. What gives?

Album Description

Full Title - Bhangra Bloody Bhangra - A Tribute To Black Sabbath. The Opium Jukebox team have brought you their trademark dubbed-up, chilled out, chemically enhanced tribute featuring Ozzy Obbourne. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Bhangra at its best.......2006-03-08

The music is relaxing and the melody familiar. I love how they are able the convert the classic Sabbath on to Bhangra without losing the songs essence. It's a respectable effort. If you love Sabbath and crew and want to experience something different, this CD is for you, even if you don't particularly like Black Sabbath you will still enjoy the bhangra harmony. I would like a volume two with some newer works such as Heaven and hell, Zero the hero, Headless cross. The artwork is terrible and boring.

4 out of 5 stars Not A Novelty Record........2003-05-16

Being a fan of both (early) Black Sabbath and Indian Pop music / Bhangra / Sitar, I just had to try this one and I'm very glad I did.

The music on this CD is more than listenable on it's own & the Black Sabbath connection only makes it more interesting.

It works so well (esp. N.I.B.) that I might just buy their Sex Pistols Tribute next.

Recommended - have a listen to the samples on Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Punk is so, so, soooooo dead!.......2002-06-12

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a small music label called Invisible Records. They hosted all sorts of avant garde industrial acts, like Pigface and Meg Lee Chin and Sheep on Drugs. The music was hard-listening, the very antithesis to adult contemporary music, relying on backbeats and way too many mind-altering chemicals.

Then something funny happened. The focus slowly drifted away from the industrial and into a weird sort of fuzzy land motivated, perhaps, by a different variety of mind-altering chemicals. Martin Atkins, Julian Beeston, Bobdog Catlin, and Rahul Sharma got together and formed a bizarre band called Opium Jukebox. They wanted to do some mystical-sounding Indian music, but at the same time, didn't want to stray too far from their alternative music roots. What to do, what to do?

They covered classics of the Sex Pistols, of course! And thus was Never Mind the Bhangra Here's the Opium Jukebox was born. ... It is not true to the original destroy-everything intent of the band.

I think that's why it's so amusing.

This is sort of a muzakked Ravi Shankar-sounding thing, with occasional elements of that Invisible Records sound I was talking about earlier. Only the barest bones of the original songs' melodies are retained. Everything else has been chewed up by a sitar and spit out onto a glistening, shiny CD.

I think Opium Jukebox have done for punk what Pat Boone did for heavy metal. Take that as you will....

        1 out of 5 stars WARNING!.......2000-05-22

Die Toten Hosen are one of my favorite bands of all time, but I'll be the first to admit that this is the worst album they ever released. Sure, I salute their urge to branch out but the execution falls flatter than Marlin Brando jumping off the Sears Tower. Do not buy this album unless you really need to own everything by them.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best One!!!!!.......2000-04-03

This CD is a must for any Toten Hosen Fan. The album contains such a wide variety of songs, from those that will make thrash around to those that you can't help but to tap your feet to. It's amazing to see the difference in this album and Damenwahl. If you are a fan and don't have this, stop whatever you are doing now and get it!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD and get your Opium from the dead pants.......1999-12-26

This CD contains some of the best songs by Die Toten Hosen, including their most famous "Zehn Kleine Jägermeister". XTC gives you the hardest song I've heard yet from the Hosen. If you've heard Die Toten Hosen before, but don't have this one, you need it.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I even heard.......1999-10-12

Die Toten Hosen from Düsseldorf is the best punk group in Germany and the whole world. The songs are full of energy, and if you listen to them you'll forget all of your problems. It makes you free. My favourite is 'Paradies', because of its lyrics. If anyone doesn't speak German, despite of this he will understand it. All of their songs are cool. Campino is really the BEST. The others are very good, too.

Okay, I'm a german punk so I must love die Toten hosen, and I love it and this Album is really the best, the Hosen ever made because the very pregnant Metal influences maybe inspired by schweineherbst of Slime, and uh yeah the name of the album is inspired by Slime, because they sang "Religion Opium fürs Volk"
and this Album is a lot about religion!

        My favorite Songs:

        5 out of 5 stars Campino XTC.......2004-12-18

Yeah, I don't know what I would have ever done without Toten Hosen stuff, have a few of their records that I've managed to gather over the last 4 years and a couple shirts(BZBE,Campino Friss Oder Stirb) that I wear with pride! It's definately helped my German, and even convinced me to make a hobby of it while continuing to pursue the language at University. They have amazingly deep lyrics thanks to the intellectual German haze that gives english-speakers such a wild trip trying to understand them and most of their songs are very addictive and enticing, whether its one that's a lot of fun or one that's more profound. Oh, and XTC is just a crazy, crazy song! Get it, you'll totally love it! Like, I'm serious, I mean you'll not ever look back. buut I'm out.>J<. PEACE ahha

        5 out of 5 stars German rocks!!.......2004-05-26

i got this cd from my crazy aunt when i was 8 years old or so, and then i didn'r really understand much of their songs but i loved the music. and so i grew up with it, understanding more and more of the meaning of their lyrics and still loving thier music. it is awesome music to rock, to realax, or to get some inspiration about this wired world and it's issues. tote hosen are a great band with a hot lead singer (campino!!):) and really good lyrics! i think you should definately have this cd, if your german or not german(i am!!!!)

4 out of 5 stars Nice to hear!.......2000-07-14

This is just my two bits on this album, the other reviews have touched on its greatness quite nicely. If you are a fan of pure industrial music you can't go wrong with this. None of that hybrid EBM/industrial dance here. This is the closest anyone has come to capturing the intense schizophrenic mayhem of Skinny Puppy without sounding derivative at all. Upon first listen only a few of these songs jumped out at me, "Drywet", "Nyz2c" and "H.o.m.m" but listening to it more (and in a more distressed state of mind) the chaos congealed much like it did when I first heard Skinny Puppy and later Download, and I came to appreciate this album for what it is. The name, Kalte Farben (Cold Color in English) describes this perfectly, vibrant soundscapes with an off-kilter beat that send a chill down your spine. I look forward to hearing more from this one man band.

4 out of 5 stars Challenging, good disc!.......2000-03-10

I had a hard time getting into this album. I listened to it probably 5+ times over at least 6 months before it clicked. When I first listened to it, my ears hurt too much and I couldn't pull out any sort of sense from it. Suddenly one day (the one I promised would be the "last chance" this disc had) it clicked, and I loved it. It reminds me a lot of Skinny Puppy, but with more static on top and at a more frenetic pace (if that's possible). If at first you hate it... wait and keep giving it a try, because once it clicks you'll realize what a great album this is!

        4 out of 5 stars Thrilla Killa.......1999-10-09

I actually don't have this record, i have the two records ("trust" and "opium") that this record was compiled from. I hated Kalte Farben on first listen and stashed it away in my CD collection... but somewhere in '96 - '97 i was bored as hell with all the "electronica" out there so i popped these records in. By the second or third listen i finally became aware of exactly what Kalte Farben really is: This is a fabulous example of industrial / punk / classical / weirdness all fused into one horrifically crazy CD. No song sounds anything like any other song (Ingo Beitz is a multi-talented artist). Buy this record if you are interested in darker electronic music at all! You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The best industrial band since Download.......1999-07-29

After Skinny Puppy there was Download. Now there is Kalte Farben. Like most of the greatest albums I own, someone convinced me reluctantly to buy this. It looked like yet another poor-quality half-hearted industrial attempt. Wrong! Kalte Farben has everything Skinny Puppy/Download fans have been waiting for! Some of the songs are inredible. Personally I like Illusions, but Innocents, HOMM, Brains Strained, Opium, and Life are all great tracks! What are you waiting for? Buy it!!! (PS. You can hear one of their remixes of FrontLine Assembly on Re-Wind. It is not the best remix ever but is a glimpse of what this band is capable of).

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, consistent w/ Dixon's other work.......2002-06-14

As magnificent as all other Dixonia (all I've heard, anyway - very little of his recorded work is available). Koglman, as well, is an able brassman, and the presence of Steve Lacey adds that much more. It *feels* like a Dixon record, although his voice doesn't ride quite as high in the mix as on other documents.

Bill Dixon is THE living trumpet player. He demonstrates virtuosity in the extreme ranges of his instrument, explores baffling extended technique - but he's also a beautiful composer (in a pan-tonal way, post-Webern) and thinker. This is 'free music' that can be approached; in fact, it can actually serve as background music! It *does* merit close listening, however, for those so inclined.

HIGHLY recommended (as are the 2 Papyrus disks, Live in Italy, and Vade Mecum)
