About the Artist
To date Mario Vaz De Mello has created more than sixty original soundtracks for international stage and screen productions; his music is being continuously performed in The United States, Europe and Latin America. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the musician/producer was in his late teens when he began writing original music for theater, dance, television and film. Since his 1995 move to New York City, Vaz De Mello has assured his status as one of the most innovative artists to have stepped into the world of electronic/soundtrack music. His debut album, BAMBOO SHADOWS, brought to worldwide audiences a genuine and unique multi-ethnic musical charisma approach to New Age and World Music, represented by tracks overflowing with endless and inspiring visual suggestions. With the release of his second album, INEVITABLE, Vaz De Mello reaffirms his status as one of electronica's most thrilling talents. The artist delivers an album that is neither a follow up nor a departure from his debut effort, mixing pop, classical, and techno music influences in a ground breaking style.

Maybe the founding members of Squirrel Nut Zippers (Jim Mathus and Katharine Whalen) were predicting the giant sucking-sound that would follow grunge when they decided to toss away their rock bands, move from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to a small town nearby, and pick up banjos and trumpets in 1993. Whatever it was that motivated the pair--plus the other quartet of guys who became the Zippers--to shun the pervasive crunchy power-pop-punk sound of Chapel Hill, it's worked out well for them; since the 1995 release of the band's debut, The Inevitable, kids all over the country have been pogo-ing to swing music. While The Inevitable isn't charting super-fresh musical territory, the Zippers' vivacious take on the Big Band sound of the 1920s and '30s has the nutty appeal of a vintage dress worn with Doc Martens. --Megan O. Steintrager

5 out of 5 stars Just more of what everyone else says.......2007-07-05

Being the backwards person I am, I got this CD last. You can see why the Zippers changed the paradigm with this one. It's definitely "Good Enough for Grandpa" and I believe the grandkids can swing along as well. As far as I'm concerned, their whole body of work is excellent and if you get a chance to see the Zippers live, you need to. Katherine Whalen is an amazing vocalist and the whole band just appears to be having a blast up on stage.

Zippers music is some of the best get-up-and-go music I know of. I use my swing mix to get me started on days when I know I need to get a lot done and keep moving.

5 out of 5 stars What else can I say?.......2006-12-17

The Squirrel Nut Zippers are always amazing, and this album is no exception. Makes me want to dance every time I hear it.

2 out of 5 stars Used to like it, 'til I heard it done better.......2004-01-07

I used to really like this recording, until I heard this style of music played by musicians of a higher calibre. There are plenty of modern masters who leave the SNZ's in their dust. Consider Bob Brozman. He deserves the recognition that the SNZ's have garnered, but his vastly superior recordings are mostly unknown. He did better version of You're Driving Me Crazy in 1988 on "The Devil's Slide, a record that the SNZ's have borrowed from (shamelessly, I think...their song "Hell" on the next record is a blatant ripoff of "Death" as performed by Brozman on "The Devil's Slide", right down to the faux spooky vocal). SNZ's are spirited, to be sure (if you ignore the fact that their lead singer has the charisma of a wet sock on stage) but they are so frankly derivative that it is hard to keep liking this recording after hearing more accomplished musicians tackle the same stuff with greater technique and fidelity to the period.

5 out of 5 stars easily one of the best cds i've ever heard........2003-10-06

my first impression of the squirrel nut zippers, the Hot cd, was not an exciting one. i wasn't very into it, and ignored them for quite a while, until i finally heard some bits from this cd. i can't even begin to tell you how much i adore them now. katharine whalen has the most sensuous voice i've heard in years, and "wished for you" is such a gorgeous song that i can never just listen to it once. i always catch myself singing "good enough for granddad" and "you're driving me crazy". this cd is the best of both worlds- a few songs that really stand out, but overall, so well put together that you cannot skip a song. the lyrics are phenomenal, as are the musicians. if you're new to SNZ, i highly recommend you try this one first.

5 out of 5 stars funky flashback.......2003-08-16

This CD is so muh fun to listen to. The lyrics are funky, the music is upbeat and you can tell they really have a great time creating their music. Unlike a lot of other modern swing bands, their creations are unique yet very authentic to the era from which they get their inspiration. I love squirrel nut zippers, but this is by far their best. I've owned it for 4 years, and I still play it as regularly as my newer CDs.

5 out of 5 stars linda krajewski is smoking rock.......2004-02-07

To malign this CD and to say the coldcut track is the only good thing about it shows a complete lack of musical taste.

Personally, I skip the first two cuts on the CD. While I love Jello Biafra, I just want to get to the meat of it- which is "IMOKRUOK". This is to this day one of my favorite techno cuts ever. If you ever owned a Speak and Spell you will know what I am talking about.

The whole CD is immaculately mixed. Beyond anyone else. The use of "Vogue" between "IMOKRUOK" and "Space Funk" is pure genius.

Anyone that would diss this CD just doesn't know what they are talking about.

    5 out of 5 stars Theatrical, Indeed.......2002-03-09

I swear every time I listen to this CD, when it's over I feel like I just watched a movie. I think this is the effect Keoki was going for with his 'themed' mixes (Disco Deathrace 2000, Transatlantic Move?) Well, it works. Oh yeah, I did alot of bouncing to the beats and rapping along with Junkie XL along the way too...

5 out of 5 stars The bedtime patrol will check up on you!.......2001-03-20

I can say nothing less about Keoki other than he's fantastic. I still have not had the honor to see him perform live, but too all the friends and fans I've spoken to about it, I have heard nothing but complete bliss. There's something to be said when you rate one of his CDs 5 stars and hear that watching him perform is much better. OK, enough of the drama, let's get to this CD...

For one, I would recommend purchasing this CD on the spot simply for the first track alone! It helps set the stage for a different listening experience in the art of techno unlike that of others, and the lyrics are just hilarious! It's the type of song a teen can play loudly in hopes that his parents can understand the message, in a comical sense that is. The CD then begins to take a deeper, darker tone that is eloquently mixed together for a trippy and fun ride. Keoki definitely proves his talents with this one, for when I first started listening to techno, he was one of the first names mentioned by many to me. It's unique the way he brings together the tracks on this CD, as they don't flow like a trance CD, but more like a build-up-to-something-else kinda feel. Trust me, if you like Keoki, I'm sure you'll enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great One.......2000-11-10

He does it all people Techno'trance'breakbeat he is a master of his craft and if you don"t have this one you need it I recently saw him live and he played a wicked set.Another all star release from the king'get it now!!

this cd actually got me into techno 2 years ago and i can still see why,all the tracks are smooth ranging from breakbeat to house to trance this is just phat and all the songs flow into each other really well.if you arent really into techno but like some then cop this bad boy-youll like it.and if you ever get a chance to hear him live you MUST go because he's incredible and doesnt really sound like any of his cd's.get it now-later

    4 out of 5 stars He's back.......2005-10-06

Ok if you're reading any other Koopsta reviews, skip them and read this one, because I have been down with three 6 forever and most of these fools are either 1) trendy white boys who don't know anything about rap or 2) "supa down ass g'z" who diss anything that they can't listen to for more than 5 seconds. so anyways, here is the deal: Koopsta's first album da devil's playground came bangin, sure the sound quality was a little bad, but the dark feelin on the tracks made up for it. i still bump the hell outta that one. the second cd's, vol. 1 and da k project, let's face it, koop went into a slump. i could only listen to about 3 tracks from da k project and though Koop was all washed up. Finally, he's back folks. trust me, this cd is worth it, he takes a grip of lyrics from da k project and redoes them with GOOD beats (since that was the whole problem with da k project). this cd, and da devil's playground are about equally good to me, pick up either one for one of three 6's finest who ain't with the click anymore.

I must admit, I bought this CD because of everyone's reviews. When I finally got it, I was a bit dissapointed. Almost all the songs have the same beat. Dahil Sa Yo...they dragged it out a bit too much. Voice V however, is a great filipina group...much better to listen to. Makes you proud to be a filipina!

    4 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......1999-10-27

I lub the lyrics of their songs. They can really reflect a teenagers life. (At sum point) I lub the beat. A must have!

    5 out of 5 stars i'm bored-but i might as well be productive.......1999-09-28

pinay's debut album was very impressive for a you young group of filipina ladies (pinays if you will). the vocals are very strong-my favorite example, pinay's rendition of dahil sa iyo ("because of you"- a traditional tagalog), makes this song sound like an actual love song as opposed to hearing it sung by drunken uncles on the ol' karioke. slow cuts and dance tracks-what more do you need...but what is really impressive is that these ladies actually have brains. irma finished law school this past june-congrats (maybe we can take you somewhere other than Red Robins). what's up for the sequel?

5 out of 5 stars of the best!.......1999-09-21

Really talented. Pretty voices. Worth your money, 15 good songs! R&B. I'm glad they put a lil Filipino flavor with that song, "Dahil Sa Iyo". Go ahead and get this CD!

Anyway, this set bumps (ridiculously) all the way throughout, from top to bottom, disc 1 and disc 2. Although you don't hear a whole lot from Yo Gotti on here, he gives a hell of an endorsement. That's right, the reviewers from Memphis can barely write; I should know, since I teach in Memphis City Schools. 4 out of 5 stars Good music from someone you don't know..........2006-02-22

DL Byron's "This Day and Age" album, released in 1980, was an unabashed, full steam ahead rocker, full of fun, tight songwriting and even tighter performances. He and his band were as good live as on record. I had the pleasure of seeing him at Gildersleeves in NYC that year, an event which included the unveiling of a song that would become a megahit for Pat Benatar, 'Shadows of the Night'. While it was probably the best thing Benatar ever did, DL's performance that night was jaw-dropping. Sorry Pat, but you came in a distant second. In fact, he announced that he had written it for Rachel Sweet, and her version actually predated Benatar's. Around this time, he also managed a duet with Billy Joel on a cover of 'Down in the Boondocks', which was only released as a single. At Gildersleeves that night, he told me that a new album was in the works, to be released later that fall.

And the result of all this? He seemingly fell off the planet. For years I wondered what happened to him. Then 'Exploding Plastic Inevitable' appeared and I was thrilled to finally have something new from this talented singer/songwriter. While clearly put together on a shoestring budget, DL's skill and exuberance still shine through. A more thoughtful effort than 'This Day and Age', DL's songwriting and arrangements are absolutely gorgeous on 'Witching Moon', 'Wonderland' and 'My Eyes Open', three songs that run together. There's even a live acoustic version of 'Shadows' as a reminder of where he came from. It's a short album, almost an EP, but worth picking up.

In addition, DL has had a couple of follow up albums. 'Plain Clothes' is an acoustic collection of originals. While I kept wishing that I could have heard several of these songs performed by a full band, the bare arrangements do well to showcase the power and range of DL's voice. There's a questionable kazoo solo on one song that takes some getting used to, but there's also the closing cut, 'The Other Man', that is absolutely breathtaking.

His most recent album, 'ITZ', is an attempted return to the style and power of 'This Day and Age'. Again, presumed budgetary constraints prevent this album from sounding better than it does, which isn't necessarily bad, just not all it needed to be. DL plays just about everything except drums and while he's a competent musician, he would have been better served with an accomplished lead guitarist. With all of that said, the album still rocks, is thoroughly enjoyable and DL's charisma as an artist is unfailingly evident. If you've heard, and hopefully liked, any of his other work, you will most certainly enjoy 'ITZ'.

Sad to say that only 'E.P.I' is available at Amazon, and even sadder that 'This Day and Age' doesn't seem to be available on CD at all, but if you stumble onto copies of any of his other albums, grab them.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but TOO short,,.......2004-07-24

STILL in search of DL's classic This Day And Age (highly doubt it's on cd),this disc resurrected the intensity that his music & vocals signify. While there are no Am i Falling In Love Agains or Todays here, this is still a sit back and appreciate type of CD,,,ANYONE who is not familiar with DL should at ALL cost find ANY sort of copy of This Day & Age and rev up the decibels,,,,it is TRULY one of the greatest obscure rock albums of our generation,,,Thanl you DL,,,

    5 out of 5 stars Let's Hammond..........2000-06-13

The Hand Of The Inevitable bathes the crossroads in a particularly favorable light. Supplying the muscle behind Taylor's organ explorations is JTQ's musical core: guitarist David Taylor; John Willmott on sax and flute; bassist Gary Crocket; and drummer Neil Robinson.

Love Will Keep Us Together kicks off the collection, spurred by guest vocalist Alison Limerick's smoky soul crooning. Limerick returns on two other standouts, the supple groovefests "Good Thing" and "Stepping Into My Life."

Elsewhere, JTQ churns out horn-driven instrumentals ranging from the propulsive "3 Mile Island" to chewy funk cuts such as "Haitian Breakdown" and the album's title track. For a change of pace, JTQ flips the fuzz switch with a spaced-out cover of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love."

5 out of 5 stars This CD is banging in both English and Spanish.......2005-03-16

When a person can do something most others cannot, there is always those who will hate them. It seems incredible that an artist can flow in both languages with as much dexterity in both that people listening are going to say well it just diminishes both. Not so with this effort. The Spanish cd does outperform the English, but not by much simply because of the hooks. The Spanish hooks are based more on a melodic flow(Mil Horas) than a beat so the tunes are more enduring. This is my first Magic Juan cd, and whoa, he blows away most other reggaeton performers except Tego Calderon. Reggaeton is not simply Spanish rap with a West Indian drum beat. El General will tell you these flows were being done when rap and hip hop were not even thought of. Magic Juan has mastered that flow, and able to bring it to English. What is more amazing he does without sounding like a lousy calypso singer. I bought this cd set in January and play it almost daily as an anthem. The Spanish hooks are just incredible, I should know I was born in Panama where we been doing this stuff long before other forms of African flow hit the diaspora.

2 out of 5 stars Lo Siento Juan..........2005-02-05

Magic Juan can be called the first real reggaeton artist. When I say that I mean he wasn't the first to EVER mix Latin n hip hop, but he was the first to put it on the map with Proyecto Uno, the group he was in prior. He put down flows in Espanol n English years before it became a fad, and thats exactly what reggaeton is to me. There are standout artists like "Mr. Whos This" Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon, but for the most part its the same beat over and over and over! Magic Juan, is a "DomiYork"( Dominican in NY ) unlike most 'ton artists who either come from Puerto Rico or are of PR descent. I like the fact that he big ups "la gente Dominicano" as my family is Dominican, but on his double album debut here, he might as well be Mongolian. The first dics is in English and the second is Spanish, not a very original idea, neither is the music original or banging. I like Magic Juan's style but everything he puts down here is mediocre at best. He obviously is jumping on the reggaeton and "Latin craze" bandwagons, which makes no sense as he was one of the first to do it and do it well. A big step down here and there is only 1 or 2 tracks that bang, the song with Tony Touch is one of them. The production and hooks are just plain, if you like what reggaeton artists are doing these days then this is a winner. But on the flip this can't even be called reggaeton, its more a mix of merengue, R&B and hip hop...and not a very good mix at that. Juan can defintely flow in both tongues...but he is just to eager to get his props and probably rushed to get this out. I'm real disaapointed as I expected something real HOT from Juan, especially solo as he was the force behind Proyecto Uno. Honestly Juan should just forget the trend and do what what comes from the heart, if this is in fact from el corazon then he is just another "latin" artist to go the sellout road. Juan is more hip hop thena reggaeton, more merengue than salsa, and that is all good...but he should recruit some top dog producres, take his time and just KILL THE COMPETITION! If he comes back right I'll forgive him, but with N.O.R.E. dropping reggaeton albums( and he doesn't even speak Spanish, except for "que que!") it's doubtful I can see Magic Juan trying to one up the next man. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and wait to see what he got in store next outing. In the meantime this is just plain bad and I think he should go back to his roots and drop some flavor rhymes over some feverish perico ripiao riddims feel me?
